  First visit to the Azores, our first restaurant experience was Bar Caloura. We read great things about their fish and pineapple cake. My wife had grilled tuna, I had fish of the day which was Swordfish steak. Both locally caught and they were delicious! The libations cake at the end was equally amazing. Our server was so nice and welcoming! The view on the deck of the ocean was prefect! We will definitely be back!!   We dined at this beautiful restaurant next to the beach and it was an absolute delight! The food was super delicious and the staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating. In fact, our experience was so enjoyable that we couldn't resist but returning back the second day. Highly recommended for anyone looking for great food and a wonderful atmosphere by the sea!   I had put a star in this restaurant due to the reviews, but I was disappointed. The fish soup had mostly onions and other vegetables. Instead, the fish of the day was okay, but the potatoes were overcooked and not fresh. Definitely, the location is good.   I really did like the fish we had. It was cooked perfectly and so fresh. I believe it was grey mullet. There could be a few more veggies on the plate and a larger selection at the salad bar. They had run out of Baracuda (which I wanted to try) and did not have chocolate cake they did not have in that day. However, our server was SO sweet. Atmosphere is SO great because of the view.   The Tuna Filet we had was great, the service on the other hand is really bad. No "hello', no "thank you", no "how is your food". All waiters give you the feeling that they are annoyed from your visit. The restaurant feels like a mass processing. They prefer that you stay as short as possible and pay as much as possible. 20-25€ for a fish is kinda expensive for Portuguese standards. The position of the restaurant right next to the ocean is really nice. We didn't give any tips since the service really needs to improve.   This place was recommended by our hotel receptionist as the best seafood on the island. After spending 3 days in sao miguel I have to agree. You get to pick a choice of your fresh fish to grill. We picked the sea bream which was so flavorful. They grill it with salt, pepper, and olive oil — you can taste the sweetness of the fish. We also ordered the octopus salad which was good. For dessert we tried the pineapple cake which is a bit sweet for my taste. Really enjoyed the food right on the water. Would recommend.   Bar Caloura is all about fish, and fresh fish at that. It's different from your typical restaurant because there's not really a dish menu. You ask what fresh fish they have, and the waitress walks you to the display where the fish are and explains the characteristics of each of them. The service was fast and the staff was lovely. We had a fish soup and white cheese for starters, which were very cheap, compared to other restaurants in São Miguel. Everything was extremely tasty and well prepared, especially the fish, which was perfectly grilled, served with potatoes, tomatoes, and pepper. There's a salad buffet that you can serve yourself to as many times as you want. All in all, if you're in São Miguel and craving for fish, definitely consider Bar Caloura.   The service is below average. We asked for the dessert of day and the waitress just listed all the desserts and we chose pineapple cake. The dessert didn't come after the mains, so we repeated that we are waiting for cake. Not only we were charged 3.75 instead of the price for dessert of the day (3.5), but we were charged twice for one piece of cake. For the fish which was supposed to be 20 euros, we were charged 25e. The waitress also overchaged us for the wine. Our fault we didn't dispute all of the overchages, but we were already quite annoyed after waiting for almost half an hour for the bill. The restaurant was not overcrowded and there were plenty of staff around just smoking or talking to each other, so all of these mistakes can't be due to busy day.   One star is for the lovely ocean view but that's all I can give. Restaurant was well staffed and we were seated immediately, however after waiting over 25 minutes, even though we got the servers attention multiple times and were told 'one minute', we still hadn't been approached to take even a drinks order, let alone food. What's more annoying is that every other table there seemed to be seen to more than once in the time we were there. Would suggest you don't sit in the corner over the edge as you won't be seen to. But overall, it did not amaze us. Note: the service staff might have long nails but if they do please at least make sure they do not touch inside the plates.   The food is decent but the dining experience is very rushed. We hadn’t even gotten our drinks when the appetizers came, and didn’t even finish our appetizers before the meal came. Most other places on the island serve their mixed fish special for $28-$35 euros for two people, this place charges $25 euro per person! Dont bother to go anywhere else, dont trust other reviews, I have a huge restaurant blacklist for this island, many of those are overhyped places with terrible food. I had Lapas today, was great, fish was also great, will try more later and add to thos review. They could work a bit on the desert options. Very satisfied.   This spot is hands down the best restaurant on the island. You have a variety of fresh catch of the day and the scenery is just jaw dropping in open air and coastal seaside views. The ambience is quite lively and due to the open air it’s just a great place to have sunset dinner. Recommend the grilled Barracuda and would not recommend the grilled Tuna as it was a bit too rough. We had barracuda, which was one of the fish of the day, and paid €25 per person for the meal (excluding drinks).   SO many people recommended this place to us, and it still managed to exceed expectations! I love the setup here, you can go for a swim in the ocean right next to the restaurant, then stroll right in for a great meal. They don't take reservations, so come early to avoid a wait. The best things here are the octopus salad and the triggerfish- so juicy it tastes more like meat than fish! The view is also incredible, overlooking the ocean. Definitely worth a visit or two!   Wow! Great location in a secluded cove surrounded by cliffs, rocks, and the sea. The menu is small and most people seem to come here for "catch of the day" - whatever fish they happen to have fresh that day. We chose our table and my husband and I shared a sangria pitcher and chose two of the “fish of the day.” We got the tiger fish and the barracuda. I liked the barracuda because it was a softer fish and he preferred the tiger fish because it had a more grilled texture. The hostess took us to the display case to show us all the fish to choose from which we greatly appreciated. Price was higher than other restaurants but it was fun to try more than one fish. If you want to make an economical choice I’d say choose an appetizer or two and share a fish of the day. We felt that was the way to do it since the fish is served “family style” with sides of potato, pepper, and tomato on the plate.   Went to the pool for the day and decided lets try this restaurant right beside I believe in supporting small businesses and giving business to the small restaurants. I have been on this island for 8 days now tried over 14 different restaurants and this one here takes the most advantage of tourists that I have been to. I came here with 3 adults and my self. First dish that came was 4 small shrimp in a small bowl meant to share but was barely enough for 1. We ordered the shared fish of the day (which had no price on the menu and the server heavily recommended) which was mediocre at best, 1 litre of sangria and 1 beer and it came out to 108 euros!. Absurd cost for what we ordered. Its clear why not many locals come here this place takes advantage like crazy wont be returning here or recommending it. Better off going to the grocery store and bringing your own food to the pool. This island takes advantage of tourists like crazy I wont be suprised if I hear tourism going down on this island. Melhor ir ao supermercado e levar sua própria comida para a piscina. Esta ilha aproveita os turistas como um louco. Não ficarei surpreso se ouvir o turismo acontecendo nesta ilha.   We were in the Azores and came here twice - that's how great this place is. The service is excellent and the servers are very attentive and give good recommendations. The first time I had the fish of the day (I got rockfish, other choices were parrot fish, tuna) which comes with some nice boiled potatoes/vegetables, and you get unlimited veggies at the salad bar (really refreshing on a travel trip otherwise filled with rich food). The second time we got wine and limpets and those were also delicious. The view is unbeatable if you can get a seat close to the railing - it's right on the ocean so you can see/hear the waves throughout dinner. If you can appreciate good fish cuisine and seafood, go there just for the fish of the day.   AMAZING! The best restaurant on the island. Got a recommendation to go there and it was the best decision. Gorgeous place, with stunning views. It is a bit windy but that’s part of the experience. They have sitting inside if it gets too much. Ordered lapas that were so fresh and tasty, followed by grilled mix of fish of the day. It was very tasty and full of flavours. The pork fish was really good as well as barracuda. The service was fast and friendly. The wine is a bit on a pricey side but it’s everywhere across the island.   I can’t recommend this place enough! You won’t be disappointed. Firstly, the owner greeted us for a late lunch and is super friendly. We hadn’t booked and luckily there was a table for us quite quickly. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful and recommended dishes and told us what the days catches were. We had tuna and “pork fish”. Absolutely cooked to perfection and delicious! Octopus salad and different hot shellfish dishes. The location is unspoiled and the whole atmosphere is relaxed and has great energy. We were here in September 2022 and I can still taste the menu! Hope to come back one day soon. Even when it went from sunny to torrential rain in 2 seconds flat, we could move under the cover and still sit and watch the rain over the water. O aplicativo de camarão foi incrível e se você adora alho, uau! 5*. As lapas eram grandes e frescas, mas muito mastigáveis, 3,5 *. O bife de atum estava cozido perfeito, mas o bufê de saladas não tinha salada, não é garoto, 4 *. Caminhando na experiência, lmfao, horrível. 7, sim, 7 pessoas passaram sem nem olhar, dizer olá ou nos cumprimentar, no dia 8 eu disse olá e me disseram: "Relaxe, estamos trabalhando, você não vê que estamos ocupados, entraremos em contato com você quando chegarmos pode" hahaha, 1*.   Super nice location! I got this place recommended by a local and I checked it out for dinner. This place is right by the sea and it’s amazing to hear the waves while you have delicious food.   Nice gem that is not fully touristic (you'll find some locals there too!) That offers excellent food by the sea. This is a place to go for fish and shell fish (not even sure they offer meat options) and the food is great. They get quite busy, so expect slow service (probably 1h30 or 2h00 for a lunch), but in my opinion was worth it!   In one word: …amazing! A small restaurant on the seaside, built just over its little harbour, hidden in the rocks.. You really have to go to bar caloura if you visit this part of Sao Miguel’s southern coast! We started with scampi and limpets - both delicious - and then the local “azeitonas” (olives with garlic) were simply stunning… But the real king of our lunch was one, and one alone: our grilled bicuda (=barracuda) was such an experience! The one we had was definitely the best grilled fish we ever had! Unfortunately we didn’t take enough pics because we couldn’t resist to the dishes’ call when they arrived! :) After one week spent on Sao Miguel, Caloura is definitely the best fish restaurant we found on the island. Great spot, delicious food, nice waiters (Ms. Carolina was awesome with us, suggesting us with no doubts the bicuda!) and good service…! What else would you ever need?   Without doubt one of the best places we ate at during our stay on Sao Miguel. The way there down a winding road is worth it, without doubt. Very good food, large portions of fish (although one of the photos I posted might not seem like that - but the trigger fish portion another day was huge!) served with a vegetable salad, delicious sauce coming with mussels, limpets or prawns. Very friendly and funny staff, nice atmosphere below trees by the sea. All in all a very very good place with delicious food without being too "posch".   Delicious dinner of fresh grilled fish at the chef's / waiter (Mario) recommendations. The octopus salad and the fresh tuna was absolutely a must. The house wine, Estreia vino verde (€9 a bottle) was fresh and paired perfectly with dinner. The views around the restaurant are also really beautiful complete with a small lighthouse.   Okay fast seating, compared to how many people were in line. But the service was sooooooo very slow and we waited over 30 minutes to pay, asked several times.   Fantastic fresh sea food. The best I have ever had actually. Parrot Fish and Trigger Fish - I have never seen them in any other restaurant. They are delicious. The staff is very fast and professional. Even when the restaurant is full you wait maximum 15 minutes for main dishes and soup comes in 3 minutes :). Peixe Papagaio e Peixe-gatilho - nunca os vi em nenhum outro restaurante. Eles são deliciosos. A equipe é muito rápida e profissional.   Very nice restaurant food was very good well seasoned had 2 different types of fish Red Bream and parrot fish. We had the catch of the day so we was able to choose what selections we wanted from the assorted arrangement they had which was over 7 or 8 selections of fish , also it comes with a salad bar stock of lettuce tomatoes, cucumbers, black eye peas which is all you can eat.   We just had one of the best seafood ever. The restaurant is beautifully located right on the water. The fish is fresh and delicious. Our waitress Raquel was very friendly and helpful. We went for the swordfish and stingray following her recommendation. Absolutely delicious! Highly recommended place.   When you eventually find this amazing place you will have to queue...write your name on the chalk board or you will stand all night like a muppet. Busy busy busy but worth it...fresh fish caught in the bay and brought to the restaurant. I had king prawns in garlic and Barracuda one night and blue fish another.   Beautiful setting, very fresh fish, grilled with skill, cheap wine, a winner. Mix of tourists and locals. Staff can take a bit to warm up, but are then very nice and accommodating. Take their recommendations, a single grilled fish is good for 2 people. Kitchen closes at 21:30, but the place stays open for beer, wine, and cocktails till pretty late. They also do wine to go for a discount. Highly recommended for nice romantic dinner or a group. Fairly priced.   Absolutely the best fish I ate in my life. Lapas are also succulent and perfect as starter. I tried the swordfish (catch of the day) which was grilled, with small potatoes and salad buffet. Service is also very good with welcoming and nice staff. We got some good portugaise white wine which married perfectly with our plate. Don't miss this place during your stay in Sao Miguel!
