  Of my travel in portugal, this has been the most authentic place I have been and my best opportunity to discover traditional portuguese food. Portions were huge and I almost exploded but it was so good I felt sad leaving beans behind. We had to pass orders before entering the restaurant and the staff was nice to help explaining the menu.   You have to go there at least once. One of the most typical Portuguese taverns you'll find and probably the best service as well.   They opened 12:30 PM and I went there at noon and was waiting outside. All the people in the restaurant were local Portuguese people. I ordered a half of osso (bone) but it was big enough for one person. Great taste and kind supportive service! Very satisfied and worthwhile waiting! There are only five or six tables, and if they are full, they close the door and you have to wait outside until the table is available. Cash only.   All the reviews are true, i don’t think the negative ones are justified to be honest. The only remarks one could make are: they are vegetarian, the restaurant don’t serve coffee or that they were in a bad mood. This is a restaurant with people who like to cook, they don’t do it for the money so i wouldn’t blame them for moody customers. To give you an idea of the service, being complete tourists, not speaking a single word of protuguese, we were served very kindly with a smile.   You need to arrive early or there’s going to be a long queue, and if standing in line is not your thing, then Ze Manel is not for you. We arrived at 6:50 and didn’t enter the restaurant until nearly 8pm. They fill the downstairs tables first and we just missed out. We were told it would be 5 minutes until upstairs was open. 20 minutes later we were allowed in to the first floor. Then it took another 40 minutes before food and wine were brought to the table. Service was disorganised and the last people in got served first. We asked for the mushroom and bones dish and got something completely different. We didn’t think the food was as good as several other places we’d been to during a 5-day stay in Coimbra. It’s a truly local restaurant run by locals and the locals love it.   This is a gourmet hole in the wall in Coimbra. They specialize in grilled and pan seared meat and fish with delicious sauce. Skip the appetizers and go straight into the Ossos (the slow braised pork bones). A half portion is plenty to share between 4 people as a starter. We loved, loved, loved the grilled pork belly with garlic vinegar and olive oil sauce. It comes with rice and beans. You will be instructed to top the rice and beans with pork belly and sauce . The umami sauce makes everything A-MAZING! Any dishes after seems to fall short even though they are outstanding in their own right. We had veal with potato and spinach last. I'd switch the order and have the veal b4 pork belly next time. We arrived at noon, and were 2nd in line. The restaurant opens at 12:30 for lunch. Only 6 tables inside.   This is not just dinner. This is a Portuguese experience. Local, authentic, intimate, friendly, delicious. We arrived 30 minutes before the doors opened for dinner and were the third party in line. The proprietor greeted us with enthusiasm and good cheer. The restaurant is tiny. Tables and chairs are small. We had two half orders: the bones and the pork and mushroom stew, plus the house wine. Bread was provided and fresh/ tender. Our stew was juicy, flavorful, perfect. Portions are generous. All of our fellow diners were pleased with their meals.   We waited about 40+ min to get seated. They got about 3 small tables on the first floor and 7 small tables upstairs. Food was amazing and portions are BIG. We got Ossos and rice/bean and pork combo? Well seasoned and cooked! Wish we had ordered a salad to go with the meat. We also noticed they will randomly pair you up with other parties. So come open minded! Good idea to bring snacks for your wait 😂 The host/waiter will work with you when you order. And do not forget their house white wine. Bathroom is very very old.   Waited for almost two hours on queue and talked with 2 people next to me for an hour, in the restaurant I sat next to a couple of two other strangers and we talked and laughed as we were old friends. Meantime, the ol' Manuel was giving us gentle attentions without andy rush, and actually giving honest advice onxm how much food to order. It's an experience worth doing in coimbra because you can make interesting acquaintances and eat delicious slow cooked food at a honest, if not cheap, price!   The wild boar stew was amazing! The staff was exceptionally friendly and the inside is really cozy. The prices were also good compared to the high quality.   Best meal we had in Portugal. Delicious, simple, cheap, and unique. Go early; we arrived 30 mins before it opened and there were already 2 parties before us. By the time it opened, there was a long line, and they have limited seats! The service was friendly and quick. the waiter stopped us from over-ordering and gave great recommendations. We had the bones and boar ribs which came with tomato rice stew. We ordered half servings of everything and were full for 2 people. All that + wine came up to 25euros.   The restaurant is small, I think it was a house that they converted into a restaurant. The service was excellent! Me and my fiancée ordered 1/2 portion of Osos and 1/2 portion of grilled pork belly, and wanted to add grilled sardine but the server told us that 2 orders are already enough for 2 people. We really appreciate his advice! 🫶 The portions was huge, and very affordable. The food was delicious, however it was bit salty, so I am giving only 4⭐️ . The ambiance was cosy.   PLEASE READ. If you really want to go to this restaurant please be at the door a minimum of 30 minutes beforehand. Both times we arrived 30 mins before and we still weren't first in the queue. Note that he has 5 small tables and 1 large for big groups. Now for the food, AMAZING. Great value, big portions, and amazing service.   Good food but not worth waiting over 30 minutes. I would recommend to get the white the house white wine with the goat stew. I waited an hour for this but it was because I got seated in the second round of seating. So I think if you walk past it and get the opportunity to get seated first, it is definitely worth trying.   Here at the end of December and able to get in right away around 13:00 but a small line up came behind us. Be ready to wait at least 15 minutes during off season. There are only 6 tables. The owner/waiter was very friendly. He joked and laughed with all customers. When he brought dishes to the table he made a point to explain the dish and the traditional/proper way of eating it. We had 2 (half portion) dishes between the two of us and it was A LOT of food. One dish probably would have been enough. My favorite of the two was the Feijoada boar. Amazing flavors!   It’s quite a small restaurant but we love everything about it, from the decorations to food and service. The food taste so good, and the portions are big. The chafana is so tender and the meat falls off the bones. I was a little skeptical when ordered the pork chop but surprisingly it was also so tender and well seasoned.   Wow, absolutely incredible meal here. My husband and I came for lunch today and ordered the goat, the rice + beans with pork, and red wine. We ate SO MUCH (because it was so delicious) that we had to take a nap after. It was £25 for all of that (including a bottle of water) and we ordered the small food dishes!   This is a very local well known place. I like to be fair, my boyfriend loved it and I found it good, but maybe less than my expectations. Very small place, it is a hidden gem and with a long queu. We ordered the main dish the bones “ossos “ but I did not like that much. We also ordered a feijoada, completely different than the Brazilian Flavour. Good one but really heavy dish . The place is very small and very hot inside. Not expensive at all. I have heard just really really great comments from friends and social media but I was expecting more taste.   This was, is and always will be one of the best meals I had during my time in Portugal. We had to wait in line of course but we made friends and drank beer whilst we waited. Once inside we were ushered to our table where the waiter spoke to us in Portuguese, Spanish and English (as we were a mixed bunch) he was incredibly helpful, even telling us when he thought we had ordered to much food. The food, once it arrived was incredibly tasty, homestyle and traditional, the goat was the best I've ever had. The prices were very very reasonable, I would even go as far as to say cheap!   Truly 5 stars. Another food obsessed person who had their best meal in Portugal here. I queued up on a Friday night in peak tourist season an hour early and I was third through the door. The people who got there at 7 (opens 7:30) had to wait for a second seating. For me, for food this good, it was more than worth the wait. The owner was a genuinely lovely guy who you can see has passion for his place. I had the “chanfanas” aka goat baked in red wine and my vegetarian girlfriend was well looked after with delicious rice and beans, potatoes and green beans but all cooked with so much flavour that she loved it, and she can be picky. 11/10 for this place, I absolutely loved it.   Terrible experience. Made us wait for almost and hour (2 guests), after we managed to get a seat, we waited another 10 minutes to order a beer, had to remind him of our beer three times before having it served. I ordered the filetmignom and was served pork. The lack of time and attention to us caused a miscommunication that I have never experienced in my time travelling and dining. They tried to solve the situation as I left the restaurant when they tried to serve me this, sadly too late.   Nice, the staffs were super friendly and provided lot of information for us since we couldn't read the menu without English. The steak is amazing but the rice with beans is a little bit salty. The bones are savoury and flavourful, maybe the best dish in the restaurant , my opinion.   A true gem in the Coimbra restaurant scene. So lucky me and my wife can get a table for lunch with only about 15 minutes of waiting. There are only 7 tables on the dining room on the 2nd floor where we are seated. Imagine how lucky we are.....😅. Ruiz (hopefully I got his name correctly) was truly patient and helpful in helping us choosing the dishes, considering they only have Portuguese language menu and we don't have a clue what to order. So we got pork belly in special sause with rice and beans soup, and pork ribs with mushroom. Also we got duce de amêndoa for dessert (which is not for those who doesn't have sweet tooth like my wife 🤣).   After a long train ride from the Algarve, we were hungry and decided to grab lunch here instead of lining up for dinner with the masses. We dumped our bags at the hotel and grabbed a table just before the end of lunch service without any wait. With a bit of help from the owner we got a half order of their signature dish, pork bones and the braised goat. Both dishes were super tender. The pork bones were mildly flavoured with a tiny bit of residual heat while the goat was cooked in red wine and had a more robust flavour. We washed them down with a couple of cold Sagres and were extremely content with our budget lunch. Good cheap food without a wait.   The wild boar stew was delicious going down but didn't taste good coming back up. I took my leftovers back to the hostel with me and shared the dish with two other travelers. We all got sick. Just because your #1 doesn't mean you serve bad food. Overall the dining experience was excellent, just don't order the warthog!   Cute place, awesome food. Only 7 tables downstairs but 30 minutes later they open upstairs. Waiting will be worth it. Food is like at grand-ma's. Dont miss it!   The best local food restaurant in Coimbra. It's a very small, claustrophobic place, but with an unique environment, impossible to replicate. Ask for ossos (boiled pork bones) as a starter and my personal favorite Feijoada de Javali (warthog bean stew). For dessert have a Baba de Camelo or the house speciality Vómito (it literally means vomit, but it's to scare people off, it's a great dessert). Peça ossos de porco cozido como entrada e minha Feijoada de Javali favorita. De sobremesa peça um Baba de Camelo ou a especialidade da casa Vómito (significa literalmente vômito, mas é para assustar, é uma ótima sobremesa).
