  Cannot recommend this place enough. Service was quick, personable and attentive. Food was out of this world. We had the parma ham and melon for starter and the scallop linguine.   We came back here for a second time on our one-week holiday because it was such a good experience. On the first visit we were blown away by the talent of the chef, who manages to pull an exquisite amount of flavour from seemingly simple ingredients. On the second visit, having been to a few nearby restaurants, we were also struck by the attentive, helpful and speedy service. The (higher/over-rated) restaurant down the street had us waiting a full 30 mins without even a drinks order. At Casa Velha we had water, wine and garlic bread within minutes of arrival. I can't speak more highly of this restaurant- everything is top notch and the food is incredible. Do yourself a favour and go.   We had a wonderful dinner a few nights ago and plan to return before we leave Madeira. The service was excellent. I had the lamb and my hubby had pasta and prawns that he loved!! I enjoyed my lamb and mint sauce. Very light, tasty, perfectly cooked. The server heard me say I didn’t really like sauces and he brought me two different sauces on the side to go with my lamb. I chose the mint. But it’s these extra efforts that add to the overall ambiance and feeling of hospitality. For dessert I had the Alaska crepe! Yummy!! He made it practically in front of me with the Grand Mariner liqueur and something else, let’s just say, for a woman who doesn’t like sauces, I ate them all! 🥰 highly recommend.   I had dinner tonight for my daughter's 17th birthday and said to the waiter that it was a special occasion...unfortunately it was nothing extraordinary and certainly not special. Food was at best average and l do not understand how they were given a Michelin award as it was far from Michelin standards. Staff were ok but not wow and for the price you pay in Maderia l would definitely say it was over priced for what you get. Overall average food and service with waiters rushed during peak times like dinner that was over priced unfortunately. There are much better places to eat that are more local in quality and not over priced.   I thought it was quite hard to find a bad restaurant in Madeira. However, I did. This was the worst experience I ever had. My 5 y.o. kid was standing near the chair while the waiter said him - "do not walk here"...what? When the kid was interested in their 1$ artificial candles on the table, the waiter said- "do not touch it" ... what? We ordered medallions. I repeated 2 times with no blood, please. They served with blood. I ordered seafood cream soup and could try just a spoon, while my wife tried a small piece of meat. And i do not even want to write about the red wine quality they served. We asked a bill immediately, hoping to leave that place as soon as possible. I have no idea how they got a Michellen award. Terrible service and food.   Awful service. They clearly have a major problem with mosquitos. We asked to move to another table after being bitten many multiple times. Received a flat "no". Service was not friendly at all.   We were looking for a more upscale experience for our last night, and this place near our hotel was really nice. We tried lobster for the first time, the pasta and sauce that came with was amazing. The crème brûlée and tiramisu were absolutely AMAZING. The best crème brûlée I’ve ever had. The atmosphere was great too. The waiters were amazing, any time we needed a refill it was done before I could reach to do it myself. It was much pricier than other places in Funchal we visited, which was made up for by the amazing deserts and fabulous service we received. We would definitely return!   Lovely garden restaurant with a simple menu of local dishes excellently prepared. We had the shrimp and avocado salad as a starter which was light, tasty, nutritious and refreshing. For a main we ate the grilled scabbard fish which was beautiful - light, a little buttery and delicious, really nicely cooked. It came with beans and polenta. Pudding of mango in custard/brûlée was gorgeous. The garden where we sat is lush and pretty - romantic in lovely, family friendly sort of way. Service from all staff was friendly, welcoming and efficient. We were able to get a table just by walking in on a week night in August. We would happily return.   Ordered a steak diane medium rare, the first steak that arrived was well done and i told the waiter about it. Second steak i got was blu and barely cooked, after telling the waiter again he took the same steak and put it on the grill again (the steak was covered in sauce) and served again over cooked. Also had lobsher spaghetti that was avarage. Really bad experience. They didnt make up this bad expirience at all and to many waiter sercing the same table.   This place tries very hard to deliver an upscale atmosphere with gourmet food. And the food is delicious - for the most part. Fish is awesome. The legumes were cooked to perfection. Even the chicken for my son wasn't the usual dry sadness you usually expect. My beef skewer however (traditional Madeira dish) was rather bland. Ice cream dessert was very disappointing, Creme Brulée however was delicious. The biggest issue here, however, is how crowded the place is and how much stress rests on the servers' shoulders. They try hard, I give them that, but it's simply too much for them. When you have a queue waiting to be seated while the tables aren't yet prepared and everyone is waiting for either their food or anything else, mistakes are made and this really hurts the experience. More than one glass was tipped while we were there and the cutlery was heavily mixed up.   Been to quite a few restaurants in Funchal and many are disappointing. Casa Velha, however, does not disappoint. I have been there twice and both times the food is properly prepared and quite tasty. Service is excellent. A class operation.   Me and my partner went here for dinner on our first night in Funchal. The service was fantastic, we felt very welcomed. Aside from this we both had the seafood risotto, it was amazing, the best thing we have ate so far.   This was on the doorstep of our accommodation, a little gem of a place. Ate here three times, the scabbard, sword and shalefish all excellently cooked and each arrived with different carbs and veg. You can come over as a side piece to a male partner, otherwise you will be called a bossy lady and there will be an attempt to put you in your place.   Food was terrible. I ordered the espada grelhada, Scarbord fish, grilled. I was served fried and bland. Vegetables were very odd tasting and texture,i assume from a tin.   I had higher hopes for the food given the reviews, photos and Michelin Star in 2018. Perhaps it was because we were there earlier in the day. The food was decent, but not remarkable. Our server was outstanding, very attentive and made an excellent wine recommendation. I believe that his name was Ricardo, but sadly am not certain. The restaurant is lucky to have him.   Great food, service and location. Highly recommend. December 2022. The restaurant is situated immediately next to the Casino Hotel: just slightly west (5min walk) of the central town. It has a nice indoor and outdoor area to choose from. We had fantastic food indoors in the evening, where the vibe was buzzy with a mix of locals and tourists alike. The food is some of the best we tried on the island and the menu has a good variety to choose from. Vegetarian options are limited. The service was great. Outdoors has a small terrace which is best for lunch, looking out into a dense wooded area. The main menu is available for lunch, or there is a sandwich/lighter food menu available. To my great joy I noticed from the menu photos here that there were clear signs on the menu if a food contained gluten. We have now been eating there twice and plan a third visit, which says about everything (having had the chateaubriand and the so-called kebab, which actually is a traditional meat food, grilled or fried? on a spit, we have their fish yet untasted).   Lovely Lunch in the Garden. We were just passing and feeling ready for a latish light lunch. What a discovery! The garden is a delight on a sunny afternoon and the inside looked lovely for an evening meal. My companion had a tuna sandwich (which they specially prepared for her without onion).   This was last minute booking and was surprisingly OK. The menu was simple, but that is not a bad thing, small menu cooked well, is alwaysbetter than a bug menu badky cooked. I had the fish soup which was very flavoursome, not sure why it came with and additional sauce just not needed, wrong colour and flavour, could have just done with a little bread to mop up the last drops of the soup. Partner had the fish of the day, which was sea bass, fillets and cooked well. Staff very attentive and friendly, language skills excellent, spoke to me in English and the next table in French, as well as their native Portuguese.   This is our favourite restaurant in Madeira. The duck and steaks have been so tender. The sauces to go with each have been amazing too. We have been twice and will go at least once again in our 16 day stay. The waiters are attentive and friendly. You get an amuse bouche when you arrive and a small dessert when you have finished. There is a lot of attention to detail. Ultimately, this is the best cooked and tasty food we have eaten here. They have won a Michelin award in 2018 and the food is still exceptional.   Food at this restaurant was extremely good. Service was polite but unfortunately first time we went they forgot our starters and then blamed me for not reminding them ! That said the main course was excellent. On our second visit whilst we were there there was a sudden downpour of rain which resulted in the diners outside grabbing their plates and heading inside. This caused huge disruption as the waiters were then confused trying to reconcile where everyone was now sitting. On top of that they were already a couple of staff short. Our dessert order was forgotten completely and we had to remind them again. Staff were very apologetic for delays and forgotten order but a small token such as a free glass of wine would have been a nicer apology. Would other wise been 5 stars.   We went there with huge hopes thinking they have the Michelin star, but the place was mentioned by the Michelin guidebook- not bad anyway. However, amazing service- staff well trained, good explanation about meals, and the surroundings- you feel as you are in the middle of the jungle- it's worth to go even for it. Our started maybe was not the best (sea food cream), but the rest lovely- fish stew and dessert. Would come back again to try different food.   First night in Funchal and pretty good experience at this restaurant. We had Chauteaubriand for two and some terrine. All were very good! I would suggest to serve it on a hot plates and veg side should be different. Syrah was good as well. Thank you!
