We had heard and read about Informal’s extremely solid reputation for producing creative and delicious dishes. We were not mislead. It can be hard to get a table at this small, busy bistro. They have no need to take reservations. We now understand why they don’t have to. The menu was both complex and streamlined. The tasting menu appetizers have a great pictograph food map of key ingredients (it greatly assists those with food allergies). So a bit of a legend to review before you begin to consider your options. But if you don’t suffer any food sensitivities or allergies, then just dig into the menu. The main course options were only challenging in the sense that we didn’t know which one to pick. A short’ish list, but described in very enticing terms. The wine selection is also as relatively short, yet very strong in quality. All at very decent value - even for us poor Canadians. I went for an early dinner on a Tuesday. I say overlooking the kitchen, which was a fun experience. The waiters were attentive and the food amazing. Our experience at Informal was not as great as we expected. Food was ok, but not "wow", staff was nice, but not "wow nice", atmosphere was a bit, how to say...complicated, since we had to listen to two American guys talking so loud from the bar sitting that basically no one else could have a conversation, everything we could do was just to stay there, eat and listen to them. Presentation and Service was a 10/10. For food we had a starter, filled zuchini roll and mushroom risotto. The risotto was amazing, the other 2 were great looking, but taste-wise unfortunately rather bland. We didn't leave unhappy, but also not fully satisfied. This is the best restaurant we ate at in Madeira and probably the best restaurant I’ve eaten at in the last year. The squid was amazing, perfectly cooked and buttery. The sauce with the mussels was so nice I ate the remaining with a spoon. The trio of chocolate desert was delicious, I could have had it for all three courses had the other options not been so great. When a friend recommended this place and told me that the restaurant has the best octopus he has ever eaten, I was rather skeptical. I'm a huge fan of Octopus but far too often it can be overcooked in order to be crunchy or it's too chewy. Their friendly and laidback staff makes you wanna come back the next day for more. I recently dined at Informal restaurant and unfortunately had a disappointing experience. The waiter simply forgot to submit our order to the kitchen and instead of acknowledging the mistake, resorted to making up stories about the restaurant being full. This lack of accountability was unpleasant. Additionally, the wait for our main course was a staggering 50 minutes. Overall, the service was subpar and the lengthy wait time made for a frustrating dining experience. Despite the disappointing service from the waiter, I must commend the chefs for their culinary skills. However, due to the waiter's negligence, I have to lower my rating. It's worth noting that we visited the restaurant at 6 p.m. when it was not crowded at all, making the waiter's excuse even more unfounded. Great restaurant that you could have easily missed as its on a side road. Quite busy but we were lucky to get there early and just walk in with no reservation. Staff were super courteous and the service had great attention to detail (from the place setting to the wine pour to the explanation of the dishes). We had the red snapper and the octopus...both were great. Interesting to see all the waiters returning with completely empty plates...no one was leaving any food...always a good sign of sensible portions and great tasting food. It's in a great spot, just off one of the busy streets in Funchal. We sat outside and were able to watch the busy main street up ahead but have a lovely relaxed chat as it was crazy loud (this was during the carnival in February). The food was amazing, I struggled to order as everything we saw come out of the kitchen look fantastic! The portion sizes were great, the pricing was well worth it for the food and I think the seasonal cheesecake was the best I've ever had! Myself and my partner both loved it here and it was probably our favourite meal on the island (we had been here for 6days by this point). I would highly recommend Informal to anyone visiting Funchal as it has a perfect combination or amazing food, friendly and knowledgeable staff and a great location. Also the Sangria Tinto (red) was so refreshing and cheap! If we come back to Madeira we will definitely make this a stop on our list for dinner. Really excellent find in Funchal. The food is tremendous, especially the octopus... out of this world and we've had a lot of octopus everywhere we go! The service is very quick and attentive and you get to see the chefs preparing the dishes while you wait, pretty cool. Only but I could find is the dessert was very decadent just missing a bit of zing, I would have paired more complementary flavours and textures rather than so much moosey bland ones, but really it was still quite good. All in all totally recommended, just try to come early for dinner or around their second shift (20:00 - 20:30) to minimise waiting time. The ravioli was the highlight, very nice but didn't understand why 'crispies' were served on top of everything and it didn't really go with the meal. Croquettes were quite dry and tasteless. It was so good we came back on our last night in Madeira. Not sure if u could get a reservation, but do allow some buffer time to put in ur name to book a seat first when ure there and check out the coastal area in the mean time if ure going during peak dining hrs, we did that and the food and service was so worth the wait! Absolutely amazing, the restaurant was very busy when we arrived but they managed to get us a table inside which we didn’t mind. We ordered the lunch special and all I can say was delicious. The presentation was amazing and so was the meal it was even nicer when we got the bill and it only cost us €15 each, this including a three course meal, water and a coffee at the end. The staff were very attentive and we didn’t wait long to be served. I would 100% recommend to anyone visiting Funchal to try this restaurant. The flavours are very well defined and it was all delicious. Portions are royal, which can be good or bad depending on your stomach size! We would come back to Madeira specifically to eat here. Happened to grab that last spot at the chef's table (bar) and could watch the dishes being expertly prepared. So much thought and care goes into each dish, and they taste like they've been through dozens of tasting iterations. Truly high end restaurant quality but at a very affordable price. We got here right at 6 and got the last table for 2- the chefs table which was fun to watch all the dishes being made. The only downsides of sitting at the chefs table is that you see all the dishes being made and start to regret what you order, and it gets a bit hit with all the cooking going on. We got the Mackreal and the mussels for a starter both were pretty good but I’ve had better mussels elsewhere. I think their star starter is probably the prawns. For mains we got the seafood rice (very good), and then the zucchini which was just okay- I would definitely get their fish over risotto, it looked real good. Wine was good, we skipped dessert for being jet lagged but all options including the sampler looked delicious. Service was a bit brief. Only men work here. They do not take reservations so show up around 5:45 or try again around 7:15! At this restaurant you can't book a table, you have to be there at (or better before) 18:00 when it opens, to get a table. If you are too late they put you on a waiting list. From our experience yesterday, the restaurant is filled at 18:20. We had each a starter/main/dessert and stayed around 1,5 hours, so we can assume if you miss the first service and are put on the waiting list, you can have dinner for the second service around 19:30. The service feels a bit rushed, waiters are running around and a bit pressing you to pick a dish and so on. This is because the restaurant is too big for the kitchen. The kitchen is the bottleneck and some customers were regularly asking if their dish were ready. We also waited around 30 minutes between the starter and the main. But I guess this is the price of success. Indeed the dishes were good, and we really enjoyed the food we had (vegetarian). We felt it was good value for money. Plus point for the playlist that night, with my girlfriend we really felt it was our playlist, a mix of jazz, blues and soul! We happen to stumble on this restaurant after a boat tour right when it was opening. We were lucky as they don’t take reservations, and open at 6pm, with a line of people. They take a second seating and I would say you need to put your name in the list no later than 6:50pm for the 7:30ish seating. The food was really good - we ordered the squid - highly recommend. We also ordered the veal and risotto and the fish of the day and risotto, which was parrot fish. Both meals were stellar and are good portions. We waited a bit long to get our bill, but it seems like they were busy with the turnover. I would recommend to others but get there a bit before opening! Following opinions about this restaurant, we decided to try it with a positive attitude. Food is nice but portions are small and quite expensive (starters 8-12euro, dinners start from 19euro). Water is charged 3euro even that everywhere else is free of charge. We sat at the bar facing the kitchen and got to watch the chefs cook the food in person. It was a lovely atmosphere and the staff were incredibly friendly. My partner got the steak which was bursting with flavour. I had the octopus and it was lovely, amazingly soft and fresh. Just pass by and I wasn’t disappointed. Just try it. They have an open kitchen and if you are at the bar you can talk with the Chef. Went there for dinner and lunch and I really enjoy the food. The food was excellent. The ravioli had such a wonderful flavour. The squid was the lightest I have ever had. No chewiness at all. The steaks were cooked perfectly and was very tender. We got into the queue about 10 minutes before opening and were seated straight away. The queue grew as the evening went on so very glad we came early! Watch out though, there doesn't seem to be a reservations system and it is very popular - so you may have to wait; it's quite small. Lovely little place in Funchal, recommended by a couple with whom we did a wine tour. So glad we went. They don't take reservations, and we showed up around 7 pm (they open at 6 pm), and waited just under an hour to be seated. They stopped seating guests shortly after 8 pm (so as not to rush the meal), and so the servers turned people away who were farther back in line (although did so in a timely manner, so they didn't waste too much time). So, plan to arrive early enough that if there's a line you can still make it in! We ordered one plate to share, and an entree for my husband and I had another starter as my meal. We also shared a dessert--I felt like I had no room, but then some was found! Everything was delicious and beautifully presented. Best was the duck, then the ravioli, then tempura (which was great, but a tad under salted and I wish there was more aioli). We had the honey cake for dessert, which was a big quenelle of cream with honey cake folded in, drizzled with honey and what I think was pulverized dried orange peel. Really tasty!! Wine list was incredibly reasonably priced (esp. by US standards), and we shared a great bottle of rose. Overall absolutely worth the wait. Loved watching the kitchen while sitting inside. Fantastic food and unbelievable value. €15 set lunch with weekly changing menu which they post on their Instagram, offering a meat, fish and veggie option. The menu includes a starter, main, dessert and coffee. We arrived at 12.30pm on a Wed in November without a reservation, got seated immediately. The rest of the seats filled up before 1pm and had a few people waiting outside by the time we left. Starter of toasted bread with black olive tapenade and beetroot hummus was an okay start, although nothing to write home about. The grilled fish with lentils and veg was delicious. The favourite was the coffee sauce and the chestnut puree that came with the pork loin. Brownie with salted caramel mousse was a nice finish. We went there spontaneously and got the last free table on the chiefs table. It was great, we talked with the chiefs and they explained us so much interesting things about the food and how it is made. The food is absolutely amazing, I think this was the best dinner I ever had. The dishes are made with so much love and details, they combine things with each other which fits just perfect. Located in a small alley with not too much touristic traffic, we had a very nice evening. Service was a solid 10/10 with a great explanation of the menu and a perfect wine recommendation. You can either go for a combination of several starters (comparable to spanish tapas) or a starter and a main dish and maybe a dessert or just a main dish. I am writing this review while still sitting here. This was one, if not THE, best meal of my life! The food is absolute delicious and the atmosphere is so good. At first I was a little disappointed that there weren’t any tables available outside but then the kitchen staff started singing along to music and it just felt like a big family and I was so comfortable! Discovered this place thanks to reviews on Google Maps, and glad we did. Otherwise walking past it in the street it might have looked like any other standard restaurant doing the typical dishes. We were able to walk in without a reservation, but I think we were lucky to do so, so book it in advance. We had stools at the counter overlooking the kitchen, which was great fun watching the chef's working at close proximity. By the end of the evening we could identify all the dishes as they were being prepared. For starter I had a raviolo with corn, mushrooms, mixed vegetables. I wouldn't have ordered if I'd known it had mushrooms, as I can't stand them. But actually this dish was delicious, and the mushrooms were fine; probably different than the types I'm used to. Main course unfortunately they'd ran out of pork tenderloin, so I had the ribeye, served on a creamy mash with mixed vegetables, and a sweet potato that was presented almost as the star of the plate, rather than the steak. The vegetables were fairly standard, but the steak was delicious, although slightly too rare in part. Dessert was a quenelle of chocolate, avocado and banana. You wouldn't notice the avocado if you didn't know it was in there. Not bad. My partner had the honey cake cassata, which I think I preferred. Overall the food and service was very good, and the best part was witnessing the kitchen at work. Probably our favourite restaurant we went to in Funchal. Eu não teria pedido se soubesse que tinha cogumelos, pois não suporto eles. Mas na verdade este prato estava delicioso e os cogumelos estavam ótimos; provavelmente diferente dos tipos com os quais estou acostumado. Infelizmente, o prato principal estava sem lombo de porco, então pedi o lombo, servido em um purê cremoso com legumes variados, e uma batata-doce que foi apresentada quase como a estrela do prato, em vez do bife. Os vegetais eram bastante normais, mas o bife estava delicioso, embora um pouco mal passado em parte. A sobremesa foi uma quenelle de chocolate, abacate e banana. Great place; amazing local food with a twist and outstanding service. The waiters had humour and explained all the dishes served in detail. I can see why this place is so highly rated. At lunchtime it's a set menu, one meat, fish and veggie option. I had bread with dips, nicely cooked meat with various sides, a sponge desert and coffee. Best food in Funchal, hands down! FINALLY a place that offers contemporary food with a unique twist, such a breath of fresh air compared to the other places in the area that all seem to offer the exact same dishes. Informal is also vegan/veggie friendly, we only had veggie & vegan dishes and all of them were delicious. The menu changes every week, which is also another big plus. In terms of service & atmosphere the place is also top notch, all waiters were extremely attentive & friendly and you could tell they know the menu/ingredients inside out, which is always a big plus. Best I had so far in Funchal, good service nice and clean place. This restaurant have an open kitchen that lots will appreciate, you can see that is clean. So so so delicious! Fresh ingredients and lovely staff. You must try the catch of the day with the lemon and seaweed risotto. The octopus was also very good, soft and fresh served on a bed of lentils. The chocolate banana avocado pudding was also amazing (you can't taste the avocado). I'm sure anything you try from here will be good. Prices are fair for the quality of the food and it's a great place for a special dinner. Wow! As others have reviewed, the food here is amazingly good for such a casual venue. It has indoor and outdoor tables in a lane way and an open kitchen which is fun to watch. Very good food flavours and seasoning one of the best I've had. I wanna say the food is Portuguese with a slight Asian influence based on some of the current menu items. The service was fantastic too - very efficient and made sure we were looked after. There are some great Portuguese wine offerings which they recommended. When we arrived we had no booking and we were very lucky as the place is popular and people after us were turned away, so I recommend you try and book before you visit. It's well worth it. Easily the best meal I had in Madeira. I had the opportunity to sit and dine at the chef’s table of this budding restaurant and watched dishes go out as my mouth watered! Everything was fresh, local and exceptional. The staff was wonderfully engaging. I highly recommend the Tuna Tartare starter. It is worth going just for this! Absolutely amazing! We came there at last minute without reservation and got the “chef’s table” :) = at the bar, in front of the open kitchen. It allowed us to have direct interaction with the chef and see all dishes prepared, which was super interesting. We chose the tuna tartar as a starter - It was DELICIOUS and fairly huge for a starter. For the mains we had the octopus and the fish stew and both was amazing!! Again - so huge portions we unfortunately couldn’t even finish (make sure you made some hikes and had only small lunch if any when you go for a dinner here) For the desert we shared their style of Pavlova and it was a cherry on the top of the evening - but too sweet, but still interesting with the sprinkle of crushed sugar peanuts More over we couldn’t have been happier with the service, everyone was attentive, polite and funny. Thank you very much for the experience and I am happy to recommend to everyone to try place out when in Madeira - better sooner than later because you will wanna go again. We had an amazing time at Informal! :) The whole experience was so special from the food to the lovely service and great hospitality of the chef and his entire team :) I can highly recommended going there! The chef focuses on the whole experience and not just the food compared to other restaurants.
