  The staff sadly let down what we expected to be an excellent and popular dining experience having visited adjacent neighbouring restaurants during the week with friendly and supportive staff at those venues. The food was of ok quality although the samosas had no spice at all and the cauliflower was partially frozen. The local wine recommendation was good and other than a local friendly street cockroach the experience was satisfactory if not sadly excellent.   The best tuna steak I have ever had! What an incredible flavour from the first bite! It came with a wonderful risotto. The chef brought us a Thai fish soup on the house that was amazing.   Started off as 5* experience. Waiters very attentive and friendly. Tuna tartare shared starter beautiful. Main courses rather less so. Over salted red snapper risotto and rather bland octopus dish. Problem came when we commented. Bill came, which was paid with card. Waiter turned away very rudely without a word and we therefore abandoned the tip which we were leaving and walked away.   Lovely restaurant in a gorgeous pedestrian street. We had a shrimp curry and espada fillet. Both dishes were very tasty.   So- we saw recommendations at this restaurant. It’s in the tourist trap. But actually really good. We had red snapper - catch of the day- with ginger saffron risotto! And the bolo with delicious dips! Wow! Must say - the best experience after 5 days of dining in Funchal. Nevertheless. They have a way to go regarding service.   Veeery disappointed with this place. I ordered ovos rotos (which is not only supposed to have cured ham inside but also it was clearly stated on the menu in english and french that it contained ham) and they arrived served with tomato. I asked the waiter what was the mistake and 1st he said "we do like this in Portugal" (I know Portugal and also Spain where is very popular) very well, I lived there, I have plenty of people I know here and also I ate plenty of times in Portugal and never ever I received ovos rotos with tomato. The second step was to say that someone (who?) had made a wrong translation of the Portuguese menu which did not contain any description and also the indication of the ingredients was correct, it was clearly stated "ham". So ridicolous justification for a very simple dish. We may add to have waited 50m before eating and an excessive price of the tuna tartare and this is the perfect match for a disaster restaurant. Podemos acrescentar que esperamos 50m antes de comer e um preço excessivo do tártaro de atum e esta é a combinação perfeita para um restaurante de desastre. Nunca mais volte, não é recomendado.

  We felt lucky to get one of the sidemost tables without reservation on a Tuesday evening. After we got seated we watched a number of their staff passing by us, some of them pottering around to see if they can fill up some glass but we were never given a menu. We had waited 15 minutes before we decided to leave. The cherry on the top was when a waiter came to the table next to us (2 metres away) and chatted with the guest there in Portuguese for a good 7 minutes. We tried to draw attention unsuccesfully so we decided to leave.   Best food in Madeira. I've eaten in a lot of restaurants there, believe me. Staff isn't well organized but no restaurant on that island has good staff so I guess it is what it is. The food was pretty good. I would say that the Tuna with the Thai soup was really well made but the soup does not bring the flavour of the nice fresh tuna. Staff unable to explain what given dishes contain, even in their mother tongue - I would not recommend if you are allergic to something. The fish I ordered was decent, the rest very questionable.   Overall poor service, mediocre food, high prices. Ordered 2 pumpkin soups and 2 fish dishes. Waited 20 minutes, until they "forgot" the ordered soups but brought us 2 different soups "on the house" but served in a very unfriendly manner. Later, forgot again the soups and brought the main dishes. Then wanted to take back the main dishes to prepare the soup... I requested they leave the main dishes and serve the soups afterwards. They asked ME to confirm only at the end of the main dish IF they should prepare the soups! Unbelievable... The fish dishes could be 10x better considering the availability of fresh fish in the island. Tropical salad was very good. At the end had to remember to reorder the famous soup, only to be disappointed with its quality. Service is pure chaos. Solicitei que deixassem os pratos principais e servissem as sopas depois. Pediram-ME para confirmar apenas no final do prato principal SE deveriam preparar as sopas! Inacreditável... Os pratos de peixe poderiam ser 10x melhores considerando a disponibilidade de peixe fresco na ilha. Salada tropical foi muito boa. No final tive que lembrar de pedir novamente a famosa sopa, apenas para ficar decepcionado com sua qualidade. O serviço é puro caos. Paguei 80 euros por esta experiência exótica

  Stunning Restaurant in the Old Town. On our first visit we ordered all the available starters on the menu and enjoyed all six of them for lunch. Stunning flavours and very enjoyable. Returned for second visit and enjoyed steak on the stone and fish. Amazing again. Staff are very professional, friendly and the location is beautiful. A must for a foodie visiting Funchal.   Good location, one of the best, just out of the fortress . Nice tables with ‘high ‘ .mise en place which rose our expectations a lot! Unfortunately the food quality not so good as expected. Service so and so. Staff not prepared on wines also, although there is a good list of wines . We had the codfish with the cous cous , octopus and. Shrimps as starter. We asked for normal bread, but had none . It’s a pity as the cost is high and the expectations were high too! We had to eat indoors as the terrace was fully booked but when a table became available outside, the staff moved us. The staff were professional but friendly. The food was excellent and the ‘on the house’ pre starter (a little chunk of tender tuna in a Thai style coconuty broth was amazing, and a nice surprise! Then my wife’s vegetable samosas were blooming amazing…. I wish I had a photo. My prawns with garlic and chilli butter were tasty and my steak on a stone was fun and delicious ( you’re given the responsibility of cooking it yourself at the table). The tuna steak was cooked to perfection though a bit over seasoned. A measure of the place was the fries that came with the steak were individually hand cut by staff in the kitchen and a generous portion too. A very very good dining experience. If staff are reading this, I would replace the Marie Rose sauce and the Macedonian mayo with the steak for a simple curry mayo and a dijonnaise, those with the existing garlic mayo would be heavenly.   We struck gold when we stumbled in here on our first evening and returned for 2 more times. Excellent food that's best described as some sort of Portugese-Indian fusion. Attentive staff that's both fast and relaxed. You get the ambiance of eating in a nice, busy restaurant street without having to settle for one of the touristy joints. While we immediately managed to get an outdoor table for 2 every time, I feel like we slipped though the cracks and got lucky. The place seemed to fill up quite quickly each evening, so I'd recommend making a reservation if you're planning on heading to the old town for this restaurant specifically. The Sangria was 25 euro which is the same as the a bottle of wine, after tasting it you can tell it was mainly lemonade.   Great little fin in the old town, next to the Fort. A fusion of Mediterranean and African flavours. Well.worth a vist but do bood ahead as its always busy. We used one of the table booking apps without any problem. Service can sometimes be rushed, but we've had a few nights here where we've had the table for a number of hours without any issues. Wide selection of wines and the specials change on a regular basis. We will be back again, and I recommend you try it out during your stay on the island.   If we could give it 2.5 we would. More performance than well executed food. I was worried when I looked at the menu - lots of styles, it doesn’t know what it is. Lots of tables outside & big groups. We ordered piri piri prawns (nice but it no bread to mop up the sauce & the sauce wasn’t spicy), Bruchetta (that was cooked tomato & onion on toast toped with melted mozzarella), scarab fish (which the waiter said was in breadcrumbs but came battered, with boiled potatoes, some sort of porridge, sprinkled with passion fruit & beetroot crisps -very strange combination the we wouldn’t have orders if the waiter had fully explained the dish when asked & which was sadly inedible, and the food was not hot), grouper and prawn rice (which only had tomato & coriander flavour & the rice was undercooked). The food was served and decorated kind of fancy and as you would expect to be in the fine restaurants, but that was it. Shrimps were okayish, tuna steak wasn’t good at all. Tuna salad came with canned tuna, beeing few meters away from the sea, thats bad. Would not recomend it. I think you can find other places, maybe not that fancy by the eye, but food will be more tasty for sure. Watiers were okay, but at the end you are there for the food. For us it was dissapointing.   If you want low cost food passed off as good food this is for you. Amazing reviews but low quality. Shame as all other of the 9 restaurants we visited lived up to the reviews. We were so disappointed. Really sorry but i had to post this for the extra few euros go somewhere else.   It’s not just another restaurant you go and sit and eat. This is a restaurant you go to experience the food. The complimentary amuse-bouche is mouth watering. It’s the perfect beginning of your journey to the fusion cuisine. The tuna steak with the turmeric risotto is unforgettable. I tried it once and when I came back I couldn’t resist I had to order it again. And to finish off get yourself a real treat for dessert - a piece of culinary art. Great wine choice, too.   What a great find … having walked passed it several nights and it was always full we knew it was a place to try and we weren’t disappointed. The menu stood out from most other places we had tried with lots of different dishes to choose from. Every dish was a flavour sensation and the staff were delightful.   exceptionally good food and good service, menu different from usual copy-paste offers in the surrounding touristy area + regular surprise from the kitchen (e.g. before our meals we always were offered different but always delicious soup). Compliments to the chef! The prices are higher than in most of other restaurants, but still way less we would have paid in any big city - so I would strongly advise tourists to add La ao Fundo to your vacation experience.   Fine dining restaurant in Old Town Funchal. The reason we sat in was that we liked the vibe and the place seemed to be incredible popular. Glad we tried this restaurant. Amazing experience.   A truly lovely restaurant with delicious food and friendly very knowledgeable staff who were able to tell us the exact ingredients in our free amuse boucle.   We visited twice during our 8 night stay in Funchal. Very popular restaurant and fit good reason. Service is excellent as is the food. The complimentary dish of soup with Tuna was immense. Fantastic Thai style flavour soup ..delicious. The local bread with garlic is lovely as were the peri peri prawns. Perfectly cooked. We tried the red snapper special which came with risotto. Great portion of snapper and the risotto was flavoursome but didn't over power and the fish.  Mains on another evening were steak on a stone.  Large tender fillet steak to cook as you like on  a hot stone served with delicious chips and salad.  The chicken tikka masala my husband had was good. For dessert they had an ice cream style dish with almonds with hot chocolate poured over it. We shared it and the portion was just right.  Another dessert of filo pastry passion fruit curd and cream was light and tasty. Good selection of wines for all budgets. Recommend booking as it's difficult to get a table if not. Around EUR75 for 2 people both having mains a bottle of wine , bread shared starter and dessert. Outra sobremesa de massa filo, coalhada de maracujá e creme ficou leve e saborosa. Boa seleção de vinhos para todos os orçamentos. Recomendo fazer reserva, pois é difícil conseguir uma mesa caso contrário. Cerca de EUR 75 para 2 pessoas, ambas com alimentação, uma garrafa de vinho, entrada e sobremesa compartilhadas com pão.   Stunning food, lovely more upscale atmosphere away from the touristic main Street and friendly service. We found this restaurant via Falstaf and can highly recommend it. We enjoyed that the menu was inspired by influence of former Portuguese colonies such as India and Africa. Tuna filet with a spicy red Thai curry sauce was served as amouse bouche, definitely they should add it to the menu! Afterwards we had the shrimp arabe with green rice.   Very Unfriendly waitress. Had impression that everything we asked was too much of a burden. Food was prepared very exoticaly and missing basic natural flavor.   An extremely disappointing meal and experience. Firstly, I was seated at a dirty table. Then, the waitress left the menu and didn’t say anything. I had to overhear her tell other tables about the specials to order one. The tuna was not seasoned at all and very bland, the rice was so over seasoned that it tasted like they were trying to overcompensate. The balsamic glaze on the plate was kitschy and unnecessary. Every single table was offered a traditional bread except me. I tried to order one and was given an awful little seemingly store bought bun. I specified I wanted the madeira bread and it came essentially as the bill was coming. I didn’t get water refill even after I asked. Everything about the experience and meal was terrible.   Very very long wait. The food is not bad apart from a fish that was overcooked and cold. We ended up staying for 3 hours in the restaurant, it’s rather expensive compared to other restaurants and the food is not really better.   Highly overrated! We had dinner at La ao Fundo because of all the good reviews here. We were the first guests with two other tables. Took some time until we could order drinks. Same at the other tables. Then we got the dish from the Chef 15 minutes before we got our drinks... Service was really bad. Main dish was average, not served hot, nothing special- Risotto with Red Snapper. Ordered the bill and it took 20 minutes and one reminder from our side until we decided to go into the restaurant to pay there. There are a lot of better places in Funchal. We shared the same meals and it was the only food that we both ate this day. We had pulpo, shrimps and the entrance soup.   It’s a good atmosphere is a busy cobbled lane in the old town of Funchal. Staff were attentive and friendly. Starter (samosa) and chef’s complimentary consumé were good. For both mains (lamb shank and Mozambique chicken curry) the flavours were good but the meat could have been better. The shank didn’t fall off the bone as you’d expect and the chicken was a little dry. The chef is obviously passionate about his food though as he came to speak to a couple opposite from us you had to send a steak back to be cooked more, but spoiled this gesture somewhat by complete blaming his waiter (who apparently hadn’t adequately explained the “well done” request), and even ranted about “how with amount he paid these waiters they should be better”, “how am I supposed to cook what you want if I don’t know” etc,and then made the waiter come and apologise. The service was impeccable, the food was well thought out and cooked to perfection. My 1 negative would be the lack of a vegetarian option. Myself and my partner eat vegetarian. If vegetarian isn't possible, of course we will eat whatever we have available, but for a pure vegetarian, I think this menu would be disappointing. With those chef skills I can only imagine what great vegetarian alternatives could be offered....... Tempura spiced vegetables instead of the prawns, mushroom risotto... the list is long.   The staff were great and this was the best evening meal we had in Madeira. We had shrimp and the meat samosas as starters and both had the freshly made at your table Tuna Tartare. As they were busy they brought out a complementary extra dish of a Thai Tuna Soup which was delicious and we also enjoyed the desserts. We asked the waitress about wines and she asked what style we liked and provided a lovely bottle which suited us. We wished we had gone back as the menu choice was great for avoiding having limpets and scabbard fish every night. I asked the waiter to recommend us some white dry wine, answer was: I can bring the bottle for 18 or 21€ 🙈👏 OMG!! Then we ordered food and waited 1 HOUR 20 MINUTES until they brought the main dish first instead of starter which we also ordered. After we finished the meal I had to ask waiter to take away the empty plates because it was lying there empty fo 30 minutes without noticing.   We had a WONDERFUL meal here! Excellent choice, exquisite service, very good price. It is at a quiet end of the street so very tucked away and romantic. Also a big plus was that we weren't shouted at or ushered in to check the menu....90% of the restaurants have 'sales staff' posted at the door who pester you. This restaurant is clearly good enough not to need one. In February the temperature outside was lovely, but they had blankets on the back of the chairs, just in case. Nice touch.
