Please ask how fresh the fish is or be careful what you order. I hope the management reads this to take better food safety in the kitchen. Some staff seemed more interested in watching football on tv than giving good service. Food was good but my meal came out at least five minutes before my husband’s. My veggie bowl was nicely cooked but not much flavour. Shrimp and swordfish rice hot pot was delicious But caused food poisoning!   We went into the restaurant looking for a table to sit it. We proceed to find one with no sign saying it’s reserved. We sit down and the waiter comes and asks “Do you have a reservation” we say No because no where around the outside of the restaurant or inside even is there a sign or some sort of label saying it’s reservation only. And he said it “could” be reserved it could be not and we ask “how do we find out” and we’re just told to find the manager.   A lovely restaurant situated literally in the cliff of the Santa Catarina Park above. Across the busy Avenida Śa Carneiro is the harbour and Funchal marina. The food here is excellent and the drink selection also excellent.   This was the worst experience I had in Portugal. Service very very poor to the point if you don’t wanna work just stay home. The server threw the menus on the table lucky us didn’t land on our heads. When asked a simple question about a drink cause it was in Portuguese the server looked at me as if I’m stupid or something. We ordered the octopus plate and the ribs plus a couple of drinks. They drinks were okay but what’s up with this food? You guys should be ashamed of serving this kinda old and smelly “food” to humans. My dog wouldn’t even dare to eat this. Ribs looked like they were boiled (white) simple whiff of the meat made me wanna throw up. Octopus also had a smell as if they forgot it at the back of the fridge since last year and topped it off with ketchup. Just stay away from this place and save your hard earned money. We actually went to McDonals after paying for this disappointing meal that we didn’t even touch and it felt as if it was a 5 star meal compared to this trash food.   Good food although not value for money. Service left a little to be desired - a bit gruff and kept being brought food that was meant for other tables and had to turn it away. The inside could be amazing but it's made a bit cheap looking with the plastic gold drips. Sit out the front and enjoy the view. The bright pink lights in the floor (to light up the front sign) coming on as we finished our meal was a bit weird - why have them under guests, they're really really bright.   Really really disappointing experience here. Absolutely beautiful setting and interior which is why we chose it. But the food and service were extremely poor. My partner ordered "iberico pork" for €18 and what arrived was burnt, inedible pieces of pork with some stale fries and nothing else. For 18 euros I'd expect a higher quality...I had octopus which was okay but the sauce was tastless. We ended up leaving half of it. We then waited over 45 minutes for the bill to come and had to ask 3 separate members of staff. We were close to leaving at several points. I would not return.   The restaurant is not far from the centre right next to the harbour (the view from the outdoor seating in the restaurant overlooks the harbour) and the Cristiano Ronaldo museum. I had Tomato and Onion Soup with Poached Egg to go with the Chicken Broth it was all very delicious and I wasn't hungry for very long! On another visit I had a Cave Hot Dog with fries which was also very good. Of interest, the restaurant is located in a cave. Service was slow, but we were there at the same time as a large party (which was still going three hours later when we walked back towards the hotel!)   We saw this cosy Café when we were walking on the coast from the port to our accomodation. It has a really pleasant atmosphere as its located in the side of a cliff and you also have the ocean view with the port itself. Food and drinks were really good, I even find gluten free and vegetarian options, and their Coffee is one of the best in town. Higly recommended.   Just go somewhere else, I mean it from the bottom of my heart, the spot is amazing, clean and the food was not the best but I also had worse. The service was really bad except for a gentleman with a tattoo on the neck, he was the only person that can smile or give any advice on what’s good, our meat had to go back tree times until it came how we expected but I still couldn’t heat my picanha it was like the bottom of my shoe (even though I ordered rare) but anyway just a really bad dinner in general.   On holiday in madeira, spent the day in funchal. A trip up the cable cars and to the botanical gardens. After a great day we fancied a beer. This place looks so cool. Service was great. We only had a couple of drinks. Noticed other people order pancakes and ice cream that looked incredible. Would definitely suggest you visit for a drink or food or both.   The place has good food and a cool location, but lacks service and hospitality. Not one of the four waiters that stopped by our table gave us as much as a smile. We didn’t get the menu from the waiter that seated us until fifteen minutes later, and then we waited another fifteen minutes for our drinks. When the drinks finally were delivered they were not even what we ordered. When we eventually got to pay they off course gave us the wrong reciept with the items we didn’t order.   On its best days, I think this place could have potential for mediocre food. However, when we visited it, the food was really pathetic. We were first served with garlic bread. All across Madeira you can find amazing, buttery and super garlicky, soft warm bread. This was not the case. The bread had no garlic whatsoever, and it was super dry and very chewy. There are corner coffee shops that serve amazing bread. We both had beef steak, supposedly, one medium and one medium rare. The medium one, arrived as medium rare, very appalling look, no crust, the potatoes were cooked from frozen and the pepper sauce was like a gravy sauce. The other steak was made out of 40% uncooked fat and the rest was dreadful, served next to a side of caramelised burnt onion. I attach a picture for you to judge.   Tucked away in Funchal it was lovely food. I had curried chicken and pineapple 🍍 with gluten free pasta. All of it was delicately flavoured. We had a lovely mixed salad 🥗 all very fresh.   Disappointed after checking the reviews here. 1 star for the people that seemed nice, however... We ordered 2 burgers, the meat patty was very hard and tasteless, and honestly I'm convinced it was just reheated meat, the burger bread gets soggy from the sauces ( I guess it could be easily resolved by just toasting a bit the bottom bread). I can safely say it was one of the worst burgers I ever had. The fries next to the burger also felt reheated and not crispy at all. The cherry on top one of the 2 drinks was wrong and the straw they put in a mojito glass doesn't reach the bottom 🤣.   Very good marinated tuna on a group lunch of a bus trip. Best lunch I've had on that kind of trip. On a separate visit we had nest traditional tomato soup on this trip. The place is not fancy, but in its class it is very good. The main dining room is actually in a cave, gruta. The Tempura Prawns were good ( cooked in tempura batter) but be prepared to be disappointed if you order the tempura squid as the Gruta choose to Deep fry the squid in breadcrumbs rather than in tempura batter, the squid was very dry and when challenged I was told that is how tempura squid is supposed to be. Poor service but as it has only opened recently it can only get better in time. It would help if the waiters listen to the customers and take on-board constructive criticism.
