  I found this restaurant through recommendations on a Facebook group. You would not know it’s there from the outside but everything was really good. We didn’t make a reservation for lunch but when we arrived they were full. It took them a couple of minutes to organize a table for us, so just wait if you need to, it’s definitely worth your while. I had the prawns peri peri and they were the best I have ever eaten, albeit really hot, very tasty. The mains come with loads of sides, so I wouldn’t order too much either.   I have never felt so rushed in a restaurant in my life. I was asked if I had finished when I still had food on my plate and was asked to go to the till to pay the bill pretty much as soon as I had finished. There must have been a charge of about EUR3.30 for the garlic bread which I was cajoled into having after initially declining, because I paid 18.70 for scabbard fish (13.90) and a Coral Imperial Balao which I believe was EUR1.50.   This is our 3d time visiting this restaurant during our stay in Funchal. Absolutely gorgeous food ( we loved fillet mignon espetada meat and had it twice) also very nice fish and desserts.   If I could give less than one star I would. I couldn't believe the great reviews. The french fries were old and clearly just microwaved, we didn't get out full meal and the meat we had to send back twice because it was raw both times. We still had to pay and left without eating.   Ate here twice, would have went a third time but there was a big queue! Large portions, I had the pork kebab first night, my husband had the scabbard fish. They were served with potatoes, chips, rice and brocoli! We also had the garlic bread and a bottle of red wine. We shared a passionfruit dessert which was very tasty and 2 coffees. Good price. On our second visit, my husband had the grilled squid and I had the scabbard fish, again very good, everything seemed to come out a bit quick, we had ordered the garlic bread again, and the main meals came out first.   Top choice for local food! We were looking for a quiet place to try the scabbardfish and honestly were so impressed by this place. We accidentally ended up with too much food, as we didn't expect such generous portions. We had fried squid for a starter and this was fresh and really delicious. Then we had the tropical scabbardfish (with passion fruit and mango) and banana scabbardfish. This came with a side of potato, rice and chuchu. Everything was really delicious and flavourful, very worth trying if you want something new and unusual. We had already ordered dessert but had to have it to go because we just had no room!   We visited here Saturday evening 6th January about 9.00pm, the restaurant was busy with a good atmosphere. We were immediately seated at one of the few remaining tables.   After a week of very good meals in Funchal, A Bica stands above the rest for preparation and taste. Bolo do Caco was superb. Light, crispy and perfectly seasoned. The baked Scabbard Fish was savory and melted in your mouth. Sides of potato’s, rice, veggies and fries served family style, again cooked and seasoned just right.   We got a table straight away when we arrived. The staff were not very friendly and the food was just OK. Bit expensive for it also. We had 2 fish and the veg was very oily.   Very nice and cosy restaurant with a really good food at reasonable price. I highly recommend if you're in this part of Funchal. Dishes are served with rice, French fries and brocollis (included) so with you're main choice of meat, fish or seafood, it makes a pretty big portion.   Our local guide recommended this restaurant and especially recommended to try the fish with banana. We arrived and the restaurant was full. We waited only minutes for a table. The restaurant is small but the tables were being served in a timely manner. We tried the black scabbardfish with banana and the mixed grill. The fish was incredible! The fish filet is mild, flaky and seasoned with a light batter then topped with a sweet warm banana and covered in a light sweet/savory sauce. This was our first meal on the island and we have been ordering this dish at every restaurant. It’s a must try and the national dish of the Madeira island. This restaurant has the best one so far. Our entree came with 4 generous portions of fries, zucchini, potatoes and rice. We felt like we had found a hidden gem eating here. The mixed grill was good but the fish was the star. The staff speak many languages and the menu is printed in a few languages as well.   Food wasn't good. Service was bad and it was unbearably hot in the place. No idea how this place got so good ratings. We were 3 people who came for dinner because it came recommended. When we entered we immediately felt the heat, but chose to stay anyway. They have no air conditioning, only a few fans placed in the corners. We ordered 3 different meals with the waitress who seemed annoyed by everything, i ordered a medium T-bone steak. When i got it it was raw and i had to send it back. When i got it the 2nd time it was better) My friend ordered grilled porc chops but stopped halfway because she also had some raw meat (which was confirmed by the waiter) One of us ordered an orange juice but we had to request ice cubes separately afterwards because it was warm. The last person ordered the scabbard fried fish which was ok, but not amazing.In the end none of us were really satisfied, but to different degrees.   Worst meal by far during our near two weeks on Madeira. I had scabbard fish cooked to resemble mash-in-batter, drowned in an awful vegetable sauce, but was hungry so managed to eat. My daughter had tender but hopelessly burned squid which she couldn't eat. Even the basic green vegetable accompaniment was poor, and the rice side dish had bits of onion root in it. I chose to complain about the squid and a civilised discussion with the owner revealed that it was 'normal' and that he 'sells a lot of it', so we were charged full price for the whole meal and drinks. Scabbard fish with shrimp was basically deep fried fish with a salty, not fresh sauce with what seemed to have canned vegetables in, and only a couple small shrimp and 1 large prawn.   Service is really good here. We felt that of all the restaurants we ate at on the island, A Bica had the food come out the fastest!!! As for the food, it was one of the best meals we had too.   MUST GO if you’re in Funchal. They have an amazing green garlic butter sauce that they serve with everything which was amazing. The serving sizes are huge (comes with heaps of free sides - potato, broccoli, fries) and the seafood is super fresh and well cooked. The staff did not seem happy or cheerful, when waitress was serving our ordered food at the table they ask who ordered chicken? holding two plates when told that we had ordered the deep fried pork.   Very good value for the ! We went there based on an advice from a market seller (Mercado dos labradors) and it's a very good address. The food was very good, the service nice.   We came because of the amount of reviews on google. Unfortunately we left unsatisfied. We ordered two types of meats, the service did not asked about the level of roasting the meat. Beef came very raw. Contact with waiters was very poor. One waiter showed willingness to contact the customer. The sangria didn't impress either. On the positive side the fish was good.   Massive amounts of delicious food (I had a steak in pepper sauce, a friend of mine had a scabbard fish with banana) for a reasonable price in the centre of Madeira No hidden costs. One thing to bear in mind - no outdoor seats as there's no space on the street. I highly recommend it though.   Totally worth it! We were here the day before Christmas and after we sat down, the place started filling up with local people entirely. We got the impression of a charming, family-run joint. At a first glance, the menu was typical (or: rather standard) for Madeira / Funchal. However, even though this small restaurant is located in a rather touristy area, prices were almost too cheap and service was amazingly friendly! Portions were huge and we couldn't eat everything.   Today is my fourth day in Funchal and I have already eaten in A Bica for the second time (and certainly planning to come back). The restaurant is just behind the corner from the market place (Mercado dos Lavradores) and I really recommend that you do not judge the place from outside, but will come in to enjoy the friendly staff and most importantly amazing food.   Very traditional/local looking place. Limpets were quite chewy/rubbery. Garlic bread was nice. My girlfriend had the black scabbard fish with banana, which was delicious. I had the espetada (tradition beef skewer), which i ordered medium-rare. The skewer with huge beef chunks that arrived to the table was almost completely raw; very soft and almost cold to the touch on the inside. Upon my request they cooked it longer and it came out about medium, which made it actually quite edible. Service was ok. Wouldn't recommend in particular.   During our 4 days trip in Funchal, we been here two days in a row because how tasty and how affordable it was. We ordered garlic bread (a must), pork cooked in white wine, prawn and squid skewers, pri pri prawns and Portuguese style octopus. They all come with free sides including vegetables, rice and fries. My personal favourite was the prawn and squid, absolutely generous portion and so fresh and tender! Service was on point and friendly, food being served very fast as well. When you come at night, you could see queues up the stairs. You can really tell how food is a place when you also see local eats there. If I ever back to Funchal, I will visit again!   From the outside it doesn't look like much but downstairs leads to a beautiful family run restaurant. They pack plenty in and are very efficient. The food is all beautiful including the fish, steak and espedatas as well as the drinks on offer and for very reasonable prices. The garlic bread is amazing too and the staff are friendly. My only complaint is it gets quite hot without much ventilation but otherwise well worth a visit!   Mixed feelings about this place. Went for lunch and had a good experience. Food was good and place was a mix of locals and some tourists. But after we went for dinner and it was so disappointing... Full of tourists, no space between tables (we were sitting at 10cm from a group of 15 people) and raw shrimps... We couldn't handle it and left the place to eat somewhere else...   I ate here 2 times and the food was good. I had the limpets every time as a starter and they were delicios, I really recommend them. On my first day I had the grilled squid. Taste was OK but a bit too burned. Second day I had the Portuguese style octopus. The octopus was very tender and nice. But I wasn't a huge fan of this dish because it's more like a stew. Nevertheless, it was honest food. They also have a delicious maracuyá pudding! The people that serve you are nice and kind. There is one older gentleman who I really liked, he knows how to treat customers, joke with them. The only thing I didn't like at all was the sangria. I tried both red and white. White was really bad, I could see sugar at the bottom of my glass and I think they add a green syrup. I would say avoid the sangria. The portions are very generous.   We found this restaurant by accident and after reading the positive Google reviews, we wanted to give it a try. We were seated immediately. We chose the bolo do caco and breaded mushrooms as starters - so delicious!!! The garlic taste was amazing. As main dishes we chose breaded pork and the scabbard fish with banana. We were given very well cooked potatoes, rice and fries to share. It was very delicious and the food came very fast! We will definitely come back and try some other dishes.   Hands down my favourite restaurant on Madeira! A true local experience. The bolo de caco with garlic butter as a starter is highly recommended. Every dish on the menu I tried was great. I can especially recommend the regional beef skewer, the lapas, and the tuna and swordfish skewer. For desert the passion fruit pudding is a must try.   The staff was really friendly and they spoke very good English. The menu was unfortunately not very vegetarian friendly tough, but I guess Portuguese cuisine is not very veggie friendly :D anyways the vegetable soup was good maybe little bit too salty. The garlic bread was amazing! We ordered 2! And the beer was also good and very cheap (1,5 euros for 300ml coral tap beer). The garlic mushrooms were little bit disappointing, I expected fresh mushrooms, bit they were from a jar. My friend really liked the fried squids and the limpets. The waiters are especially attentive and very friendly, the food is tasty and you can tell the ingredients are fresh. Also we didn't have to wait long for any of the food or drinks we ordered which was amazing because the place was full when we were there. The fact that there were many locals dining in is also a very good sign! And the prices are below average compared to nearby restaurants, which is a great plus! If you go to a Bica (you definitely should) make sure to order Espetada tradicional and bolo do caco (local garlic bread with butter and parsley), we loved both!   This is such a nice restaurant! The price for food and drinks is very fair and everybody working there is so attentive and went the extra mile to make sure we had the best dinner possible.   Such an unassuming place, but don't be fooled food is really fresh and good here. They have some local traditional food which you must try while in Madeira. We had the scabbardfish with passion fruit sauce and banana and the lapas, we found that this was more than enough for 2 people especially since the scabbardfish dish come with 4 different sides!   Went ther to try the regional beef skewer on a laurel stick and I was not disappointed. The garlic bread was great too. Wasn't expecting so many side dishes.   Truly found a gem in Madeira! A Bica offers traditional local food for very affordable prices. The portions are huge, even for a foody like me! We ordered limpets, mushrooms with egg, mixed steak and tuna steak and all of them were on point, especially the tuna steak in wine/onion sauce! The service is excellent, very friendly people and owner. We would definitely recommend this restaurant to everyone who visits Madeira!   We visited this restaurant last time we were in Madeira and had a really good meal. We decided to find it again and were successful! Delightful, genuinely friendly staff welcomed us.   We came here following a recommendation from our guide. The whole experience was terrible. The room is extremely loud, the bread was stale, the food was no different from any other touristy place, with the long list of unsavory fishes and meats.
