  It’s like time travel back to some 90’s Canary Islands tourist location. Funny interactive music & dance performance with customers while dining. Menu and plating is also from 90’s, cool (:D) ketchup clefs on overly large tableware. Medium beef had some blood dripping from the middle and side dishes had strange flavour in them, but somehow I still truly enjoyed it. Some of the meals on the menu weren’t available, but it’s understandable in the way, because the menu is very large. I would not visit again to enjoy food, but I would visit again to enjoy the time machine experience. Prices and quality doesn’t quite meet, bit too expensive.   We reserved a table for December 24th and were given a seat in a corner, far away from the other guests, because they forgot to note our reservation, which we made 2 days before. We had to wait 1 1/2 hours for the main dish and it tasted like canteen food for which we had to pay €50 per person (with a starter and dessert and without drinks) because it was a "special christmas menu". Unfortunately this ruined our Christmas evening and we left straight after eating half of our dessert because it was so disgusting. The waiters were extremely unfriendly (especially the older lady) and the whole staff seemed unhappy to have worked that day.   We were recommended to this restaurant so disappointed from the start that staff were quite abrupt and we did not feel welcomed. Food less than average, including two sides that came with the main course, which were small and unappetising. Plain rice was literally just that - plain ! And vegetables consisted of boiled carrots and cauliflower. No effort appeared to have been put in on serving or presenting the plate. We had a complementary dish which consisted of a single cracker split into four with some tuna mayonnaise on it?? Decor also quite tired and outdated. We have been to several great restaurants during our time here in Madeira, with similar prices and fantastic food and ambience. Perhaps if you are a regular, then this is not how you are treated…as others have mentioned, there are plenty of good reviews for this restaurant. Not sure why!   We ate here after seeing good reviews and we weren't disappointed. We were warmly welcomed with smiles and complimentary drinks. Great menu selection with Portuguese and fish specialties and the food was fresh and delicious. So good we ate there twice in the week and will definitely be visiting again the next time we are in Funchal. Obrigado por uma excelente refeicao e noite, ate voce de novo.   A lovely meal, the staff provided excellent service throughout, the food was superb and the prices are very reasonable. We had 2 bottles of wine, a starter, 2 mains and we were given complimentary items with the meal too. All under €100! Bruno provided us with some excellent local tips about the area too.   We had a table booked but the outside dining was full so we were put inside, next to the toilets. It was very warm and they had a couple of fans running which was causing a standing wave effect with a constant thrumming in our corner. Because we were inside we couldn't order any of the stone cooked dishes, which was the main point of visiting the restaurant. We wanted a different bottle of Vinho Verde to the normal one, but that's all they had, despite having various others on the menu. Stepson ordered Fanta but was given the local orange drink instead, without being asked. The salad for two was underwhelming (I've had more as a garnish - see below), as was the tropical scabbard fish - I'd had better pretty much everywhere else around Funchal. Waitress wasn't rude but certainly came across as if she didn't care and just assumed we would take what we were given. Overall a very disappointing experience given how highly rated this place seems to be. A garçonete não foi rude, mas certamente pareceu que não se importava e apenas presumiu que aceitaríamos o que nos foi dado. No geral, uma experiência muito decepcionante, dado o quão altamente classificado este lugar parece ser.

  We went to Real Canoa based on the good ratings wanting to try out some local food and didn‘t regret it. Altough having to bring some time, everything we ordered looked and tasted just amazing. So we decided to go there for a second time and beside getting a discount then, we also were invited to go to Funchal by bus organized by the restaurant to watch the firework there for free!!! Many thanks to the restaurant for this experience. I don't know where else you can get such incredible service for such a price.   A solid restaurant in the area, made such primarily by the service. Had a great, friendly and helpful waitress. Food that arrived was enjoyed by all, pricing was reasonable for the food/area. The fish and seafood dish is one I'd recommend and meat was cooked just as requested. The biggest mistake I think customers make is not telling the staff how they'd like something cooked (i.e. medium rare) as the default for the area is well done and for most visitors that comes across as dry and tough.   A bit of disappointing expérience. It is a „wanna be“ 5 Star Restaurant but stuck somewhere on the way.. The ambiente isn’t cosy and inviting. The food was ok. The meat was not easy to chew. Some of the side dishes tasted strange and the portions are small. Everything was nicely plated but in old tablewear. They tried to made it look expencive, as it actually was but fir example, with ketchup deco 🧐 The dishes tasted ok. Not great and not like that, that you can expect by these prices but ok. The staff was the one „nice“ thing. They tried to make us comfortable as possible and they all were very friendly and attentive. Bjt that was all. All the „Trip Advosor“ etc. prizes are totally overrated. It was ok but disappointing and definetely not worth the price.   The food was really bad. We had to wait for around 30 minutes before they served our dinner. I ordered the spaghetti bolognese, but got a spaghetti soup with grounded meat. There was no bolognese sauce or whatsoever. Because the spaghetti was so bad, I ordered fries with ketchup. They served me old fries which were sloppy and cold and forgot to bring the sauce. After telling twice that I want to have ketchup, they brought it (read 10 min later). If you don’t want to ruin your nice day in Madeira, I advice you to don’t come to this place!   Food was good but not special. Few free starters and live music. Difference in treating rich people and not so wealthy tourists really visible. The waitress threw cutlery on our table and few minutes later she was dancing in front of rich english couple and tapping on the terminal. Not a fun of such a treatment.   Wonderful experience on our two visits during our stay in Funchal. Our host and owner, Bruno, was helpful, accomodating, and sociable as we're all the staff even during busy periods. He even put us in a taxi with other guests, at his expense, for us to continue our night at another bar with music. Not something I would expect in England! Well done and thankyou Bruno. I highly recommend a visit, but book if it's cool and you need an inside table. We will definitely be back when next in Funchal.   Not the greatest food out there. Wait absolutely too long in comparison to the quality. We waited for 1,3h for the food. The scabbard fish was really good, however the shrimp was bland and chicken skewer was awfully dry.   Let’s start with the positive. The ambient was nice and they treat you with a good measure of hospitality, they gave as a welcome and a farewell drink and a small appetiser. That was nice, but we came there for the food and it was a disappointment. I ordered the local scabbard fish with banana and potatoes and veggies on the side. It was absolutely tasteless and I regret ordering it. My girlfriend ordered a tuna steak with spinach. The fish was extremely dry and they gave her a wrong side dish.   Food and service is OK. But 4,5 rating here at Google when I write this review.. I can find other restaurants with that rating where the food is much better. It's way to expansive compared to how good it is. I got the tbone steak. The meat was fine but the vegetables that came with it was just some boiled/steamed with not much taste..   The restaurant was full and all the staff were very busy. They could have done with an extra member as the service was very slow. Everything took a long time to arrive; we arrived at 7:30, had two courses and didn't leave until 10:00. Our meals were ok; other restaurants in our two weeks have been much better.   The food is incredibly good. The atmosphere is more casual seaside cafe then gourmet dining experience and maybe that’s why I liked it so much. Perhaps it’s because the service is laid back and friendly and it feels like the people are really glad you stopped by, but there is just something about this place that’s sets it apart and above other restaurants that offer great food at a reasonable price point.   The food here was excellent. We originally came here for the fun kids menu (Harry Potter steak) but all the food is excellent. The fish soup was amazing with a great mix of fish and the broth was stellar. I had been meaning to try the scabbard fish with banana and passion fruit and it was excellent, the right balance of sweet and savory. No table even though we made reservation. 30 min wait till we could order first drinks. 2 hour wait till we got our main. Food was dry and didn't make up the wait.   The food was good but there was a special atmosphere of "pushing too much" all the time... they litterally jumped on us while we were looking at the menu outside then they brought the garlic bread while we did not ordered it, they charged us 2.5€ in extra (not seen for all the others restaurants and we did not understand why... the set up of the table ??   Ate here a couple times, one being on our last night. Food very good indeed. Had beef fillet on skewer one night and monk fish, prawns with curried sauce the other. Overall, a really good atmosphere, with all the staff happy, chatty and attentive, but not overbearing. Background entertainment supplied by a singer / or guitarist makes for relaxing dining. Bruno, the owner, runs a good ship, and takes pride in the food, service and restaurant as a whole. The restaurant is very well thought out, with all outside seating protected from the elements. Not the cheapest prices, but then not overpriced either, considering you are getting good food, service and atmosphere.   Bruno the fantastic host as usual. Usual fantastic steak on the stone and also the salmon on the stone. I had the beef skewers, delicious and moist and full of flavour.   Food was boring and mediocre at most. Portions small especially for the price. But 1 star is because of the staff. The service is intrusive to an extent it gets really annoying. Had to endure some really bad quite offensive jokes as well. You can tell the personnel tried to create a great experience but it was just way too much on every end.   In our experience of Madeira, this is one of the best places to visit for eating. It's not the finest food or the finest decor, but for a really great fun night out its fantastic. From Bruno who owns it through to who ever clears your table, they interact with customers in a way I've not come across on holiday. Friendly, informative & funny from start to finish, with various family music entertainment and very good tourist food. I don't really do reviews but these guys deserve one for their efforts. Had a great time here and spent 4 out of 7 nights here because other places either had no atmosphere or were poor service.   I Cant imagine going to Madeira without going to the Real Canoa; All the staff are really friendly, making for a fun atmosphere where you can relax and eat good food... I reckon I know the names of all waiters and waitresses now - I must get the names of the kitchen staff next time as the food is definitely part of the positive experience. One tip - if you are hungry and/or you want an outside table - book early; the Real Canoa is an open secret and there are a lot of regulars, so you might end up waiting for your food!
