  We got this place recommended by friends. When we arrived, we hesitated as we did not like the exterior and neither the interior of the restaurant. The lights were too bright for dinner, especially when outside was already dark. As mentioned in the previous reviews, some of the tables are way too close to each other, and we were only lucky not to have someone sitting next to us. The culinary experience was top-notch. Red Sangria up to standard. Fried mushroom starter with garlic dip was delicious. The super tender fillet steak on hot stone that you can cook to your liking was the highlight of all our culinary experiences in Madeira. And we finished the evening off with the apple pie, which was also lovely. The service was very friendly and attentive. The menu is offered in multiple languages. We did try the steak on the stone in other places in Funchal after this visit, but Solar da Ajuda was definitely the best in terms of meat quality and the service provided. O super tenro bife de lombo na pedra quente que pode cozinhar ao seu gosto foi o ponto alto de todas as nossas experiências culinárias na Madeira. E terminamos a noite com a torta de maçã, que também estava uma delícia. O serviço foi muito simpático e atencioso. O menu é oferecido em vários idiomas. Depois desta visita experimentámos o bife na pedra noutros locais do Funchal, mas o Solar da Ajuda foi definitivamente o melhor em termos de qualidade da carne e do serviço prestado.   Unfortunately I didn’t like this place. The service was good, but it was not a good feeling eating there - no good atmosphere, it was smoking from the stone, the tables too close to each other, a lot of people there.   Very good food and kind service. Fresh fish made in the Portuguese way and a lot of other courses on the menu. Don't be fooled by the 'touristic' facade. The host was very kind when I had a stomach issue and suggested suitable food.   We enjoyed a beautiful meal here this evening. They staff found us a table as we hadn't booked. I would recommend you book it. It was busy, even though it was busy the staff were very friendly. We had garlic bread for a starter, which was very nice, very soft bread, and much different to the standard everyday version. I had the lamb chops that were cooked as I had asked and were delicious. My husband had the chicken kebab, which was a very generous portion again, beautifully cooked. All of the food that was being served around us looked delicious, especially the hot plate food.   Beyond Meat 🤑 Have a Vegan Menu that consists of 4 mains. Ordered Vegan garlic bread with cheese and just got the garlic bread. The burgers for 20 plus euros are beyond meat burgers. This is not made known. The burgers are not freshly made and the price is too much. Do not reccomend for Vegans if they want fresh food.   True one restaurant. Located not far from the ocean and you risk missing one of the greatest restaurants on Madera. Steak on rock - the best that I've ever tasked. Plus the service is just brilliant. They bring you raw meat on hot rock and you personally could control how you like it medium rare or even well done. In addition to steak I personally recommend ordering baked potato. All other meals that we ordered were excellent as was the steak.   Great food, good atmosphere, and the best service! My partner and I shared the grilled limpets to start which were divine. Then she had the scabbard with banana and passionfruit whilst I had the vegetarian fajita. Both portions were very generous and delicious. I’d recommend the scabbard if you like fish! The meal ended with a surprise small glass of their local traditional poncha which we weren’t expecting but definitely appreciated. The waiter was lovely throughout, and even saved me a couple of euros from telling me to opt for the a la carte menu if I wanted to go for the vegetarian fajita.   I've been to over 40 restaurants on the island, and this is by far my favorite place for meat. The steak from the stone is so tender and cooked to perfection, and the espetadas are juicy and flavorful. It also has the best poncha in Funchal, and one of the best on the island. The owner and staff are also incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel like you're part of the family.   Service was very quick and amazing. Wine and then food arrived quickly. The steak on the stone was amazing apart from the face full of steak cooking. Wine was very nice. The salad and chips were a little greasy for my preference. We were put on a table right next to someone but they were finishing up with coffee, would still have been nice for more spacing out.   Depends what you’re looking for… having eaten here I can’t believe it scores so highly. But if you’re a classic Brit abroad then I see the appeal. The food was actually quite nice, but the place just wasn’t for us. Fluorescent lighting, middle aged Brit central and a menu that caters to every taste. However for many people this would be a huge plus, so judge deciding on what you prefer. Rating purely for the food not the ambience!   Many have said in other reviews that Solar da Ajuda is a hidden gem and they are so right. This busy little restaurant caters for so many different tastes. From pasta, pizza to steak and chips or the standard tuna steak on a hot stone. If like us you like meat then you have to try the Espetadas (meat on a skewer), the pork and beef are so tender. So much more than the regular tourist meat skewers you can get in Madeira. The staff are very friendly and soo helpful, nothing is too much trouble. If its your birthday they will throw in the standard 'happy birthday' celebration complete with guitar!   Worst service I've received in years. I was there tonight, only female in a group of 8 and the waiter on duty decided to reducilise me not once, not twice but three times in front of my male company highlighting and explaining how I didn't cook the meat the way he thinks should be done. I've been in London and Japan eating the same kind of food and it seems that Madeira's waiter knows better than any of the world capitals. Never coming back nor recommending this place. First rule, don't embarrass your customer. Honestly felt attacked and he insisted so much to let all the table know about this. Machismo at its best, really ruined the whole evening.   Not particularly specific to this excellent restaurant but I feel the need to get this question out of the way - Why steak on a stone? I've had this in the UK and I basically destroyed a very good piece of meat which went from rare to over cooked by the time I finished? I booked this restaurant through the chat line (first time I've ever used it) with a very quick response from Fernandez ( I hope this is the correct spelling for a lady!) Very busy on arrival so glad we booked. Because of my previous "Stone" issues, I ordered fillet with pepper sauce and hey presto, perfectly cooked steak! My wife had a very nice grilled tuna dish. We had a very nice bottle of white wine on advice of Fernandez and after chocolate mousse with ice-cream, it all went down hill from there! NOT! Complimentary Madeira wine then complimentary almond liqueur and brandy saw us float out of the restaurant. Not surprisingly, we are going back! Well worth a visit! 3rd visit. Red wine tonight chosen again by Fermanda! An excellent wine, Fajitas for my wife and fab pepper Steak yet again for me has made the decision for us that we will return for our last night. Busy? It's full from about half six to half eight so I would recommend booking!   Lovely staff but the food was average....the vegetables were frozen peas and carrots. Not what I expect from Madeira. Customers cooking their steak on the stone were burning garlic butter which smelt acrid and our hair and clothes smelt of burnt garlic butter when we arrived home. The staff put customers on the table next to the door to the toilets ...even though the restaurant was almost empty so I had to squeeze past them to open the door.... surely the worst table in the place!   From the moment you arrive until you leave the staff here give you their full attention. On looking at the menu 3 of us went for the set menu and all steak on a stone and my partner the salmon. The wine we were recommended by the waitress wasn't on the set menu but they said it will be included and it was very nice as we all agreed. Once the food arrived we were unclear as to what happened next as none of us had steak on the stone before. The manager was so helpful in explaining to us how he made the stone hot and how to cook it, then told us it stayed hot for 1 hour. The starter and desert were both delicious and then we were given a brandy for a night cap another classy touch from the staff. I did plan to eat there the next evening and try the salmon but ended up too far from restaurant when we were ready to eat. A must visit if you are close by!   We went last night to this restaurant through TUI, our Rep raved about the steak on a stone and so with my boyfriend being a big steak fan we had to try it. He was so besotted by the steak that he wouldn't shut up about it! Says we have to go back! Im not a big meat eater, so I was worried about what I would have to eat but the vegetarian fajitas were great and presentes just a nicely as the meat was in the restaurant. Great salad bar available, we had some lovely garlic bread to start. Great red wine to accompany our meal as part of the TUI deal. All in all a very enjoyable visit! Thank you! They say don't judge a book by its cover and the same goes for Solar da Ajuda, there is no impressive facade, in fact compared to similar establishments locally its very understated. The place doesn't need anything flashy, the food and the service do the talking. If this place was in my home town I would eat there at least once a week. 2019 Had to come here again. This time we tried the Fajitas, fantastic! The beef and chicken were excellent. Don't know where they get their meat but please don't change supplier or chef, both meats were tender and cooked to perfection. Service was excellent, the waitress recommended a delicious wine. Had Tiramasu for dessert, followed with excellent coffee and complimentary brandy and liquor.
