  After 2 years we came back to this restaurant. It didn’t dissapoint. The staff is extremely nice and welcoming. The food is traditional and fresh. We ate espetada - meat on a stick and fish in passion fruit sauce. Both dishes were really great. Beer was cold and tasty.   Went there because of the rave reviews. We had limpets, prawns and octopus and found limpets to be quite chewy (not sure if that's the texture they're supposed to have so won't criticise). The prawns were really big and fresh, smothered in garlic butter sauce and we went for the cheaper octopus in tomato and onion sauce which was really tasty and flavourful. We enjoyed the food and the restaurant was nice and cosy however the service was a bit lacking. The waitress we had was not welcoming and had a bit of a stern approach. Compared to other places it was a bit surprising and unexpected as usually we experienced very friendly and upbeat staff. She wasn't rude so I won't judge too harshly on this, just be aware and adjust expectations before your visit. (Traduzido pelo Google) Fui lá por causa dos elogios.   We went here because of the excellent reviews which now seem shocking. My main dish was terrible. I had a cold so I didn’t trust my taste buds when the steak tasted like a smelly shoe. Then I started to worry the meat may be spoiled, not just bad tasting, so my partner tried it. He confirmed yes, this tastes like a smelly shoe. The server apologized when we told her what happened but that was that. Luckily I did not get food poisoning. I should note my partner’s meal was fine. To the owner who replied to my review, our server was a woman. She was very nice other than not doing anything about the steak.   We chose this restaurant due to the great rating on google, but unfortunately it was the worst meal we’ve had so far on Madeira. The garlic shrimps had grain in it and was impossible to eat. Our chicken stroganoff was made with canned mushrooms and in general just wasn’t good. Do not recommend this place.   I discovered this hidden gem the first day I arrived in Funchal. There’s a relaxing atmosphere and very friendly service. The food is really excellent, it’s a lovely location in a small street (no traffic and only a few passersby) and prices are very reasonable. I really recommend this place.   One of the local restaurants that you can find walking through the narrow streets of Funchal near the port. Got some amazing seafood pasta for 15 Euros which is extremely decent! Also the Coral beer made in Madeira is a must! Would recommend having lunch on the terrace outside rather than inside. Had lunch during the weekend and it was NOT crowded at all!   Might as well be the most delicious meal we had on Madeira during our week here. The octopus is just outstanding, probably the best one I had in my life so far, and for the completely reasonable price too. The medium well done meat on the skewer was delicious as well. Overall, super happy we decided to try out this place. It was completely empty when we came so we were a bit doubtful, but the dinner turned out great and the staff is super friendly and happy to help (we were about to take one more dish, but the waitress advised us not to, since we would probably be full with what we already ordered, and we are happy we listened to her advise).   O Visconde is a restaurant in the city center of Funchal. It has been a really nice and good surprise to eat here since I had the best dinner in all Madeira. I strongly recommend to order here a dish of limpets as a starter (in my point of view one of the best I ever had). I shared the dish with my partner and then we order each a dish of grilled scabbard fish. Prices are really competitive and the quality of food was great.   We were wondering around Funchal and came across this restaurant completely by accident, what a superb find; simple but fabulous, Grilled meat is obviously a speciality, lamb cutlets and a traditional Madeira skewer of beautiful tender, tasty, aged beef with a subtle taste of the marinade and charcoal... Absolutely lovely. The host was a true restaurateur, he read all the signs: another glass of wine, a portion of garlic bread, he was on it! Fantastic find, lovely food fabulous service...   The place is great. You wil find everything you need there. We came there twice and I have to say that those two were our best meals during our trip. We tried espada, some other seafood, cod croquettes but my two favourites are espada with passionfruit (most of places serve it only with banana, but if you love passionfruit you will definitely not regret. The second one which was so delicious is onion soup, but my dad also enjoyed his tomato soup).   Whenever my wife and I go on holiday, we like to find non-touristy restaurants that serve authentic local food and run by locals, especially by families. O Visconde is an unassuming, tiny restaurant run by the most friendly lady, Paula, who makes all of her patrons feel like family. The food served here could not be more authentically Madeiran. I had the Scabbard Fish (abundant in Madeiran waters) with the restaurant's special sauce (tomatoes, onion, cream and bananas), which was sweet and savoury in equal measure and made some magic in my mouth! My wife has the Octopus, which was fresh and delicious and came in an extremely generous portion! I'd also recommend the cod croquettes as a starter. If you're in the mood to explore, do try their banana and cheese, which is uniquely Madeiran and was borne out of necessity with Madeiran farmers not having time for a proper lunch while plowing the fields. The restaurant also makes a mean poncha that will get you warm in an instant. The final thing to mention is that this restaurant is extremely affordable compared to most of the other restaurants in Madeira. Each of our meals came with chips and salad and were between 10-13 euros. The portions are very generous and you will definitely leave feeling full and satisfied. Paula will ensure that's the case! Our waiter Paula was super friendly and knowledgeable, as well as funny and engaging, also speaking portuguese, spanish, english, french and a little Italian, just amazing!. We ordered lapas and croquetas de bacalao as starters, and Paula kindly recommended to have the lapas first to eat them hot, they were both really good! Then we had a tuna steak and a typical scabbard fish in their own sauce which Paula proposed I could customise, since everything they cook is fresh and not pre-cooked. Both dishes were delicious! The final bill was also very reasonable for the quality and the location - one step away from the atlantic festival main stage. Highly recommended!   A gem we were delighted to find tucked behind the cathedral in an unassuming but cosy street setting. The waitress, Paula, was welcoming and friendly. She clearly had a great rapport with the slew of regulars who started showing up. We had espatada followed by espada with shrimp sauce and all the food was mind-meltingly fantastic. It costs much less than most of the places in the area and I'll wager it's much better. Only thing to watch out for: it's not open at the weekend.   Don't be put off by O Visconde's low tech vibe, as we nearly were. Give the ripoff restaurants on the nearby strip a miss and spend your time and money here instead. Local cuisine to die for, prices to live for, and a restaurant owner who will charm your socks off. The espatada makes butter look like concrete. I cannot recommend highly enough.   Just had a meal there. As we walked around we were pounced upon by other restaurants so this was a nice change. Paula was lovely. She was the only waitress (for want of a better word ). We went straight for a main dish each. My wife had Carbonara which was made to my wife's request while I had a seafood pasta dish along with the BEST garlic bread. I had 2 glasses of PONCHO (forgive the spelling) while my wife had a couple of soft drinks. It was a lovely relaxed meal , no pressure and good service. Total just over 26 euros.
