  I've just come out of there. I didn't eat in there. I was just walking past and decided to pop in for a quick beer. What a horrible unfriendly staff at the bar! The blonde lady served me the beer though with the most reluctant expression on her face, and not even once looking at my face which was rude. The rest of the staff looked quite unfriendly as well.   We were on a P&O cruise and were in Maderia on 5th & 12th Feb '24 and had time to visit the Ritz twice for lunch and once for dinner. The service outside was quick, efficient, the staff were brilliant and the food was lovely. So we booked dinner on the 12th on their balcony terrace overlooking the Av. Arriaga and the beautiful Municipal Gardens. We were looked after superbly by Sandro outside and the lovely Katia in the restaurant. The whole evening was simply fabulous but as we had to be back on the ship by 21:30 we have decided to return to Funchal in June for 4 nights so we can relax in the warmth of the wonderful people and take more time to enjoy not only Funchal but also the Ritz. Can't wait !!! Mal posso esperar!!!

  Place is just surviving because of the name, we were the only people these (which says something already) but even then it took a while for the food to come out. When it did come out it just wasn't very good, rice had no salt and burger was burnt dry, waiter argued that it was medium rare. All together just a bad experience. Unfortunate because the building is nice and it's in a nice part of town.   Disappointing afternoon tea. I'd booked a table thinking it would be busy and we were the only table there, so zero atmosphere. Service was good, but even the lovely waiter couldn't save the disappointing afternoon tea. Sandwiches felt slightly stale, probably from being exposed to the air for too long. Two of the sandwiches came without filling and we had to point this out. Scones were small and strange. Not what we would call scones in England. Cream was a kind of light, whipped cream rather than clotted cream (although of course I understand the difficulty getting things like that abroad). We were comparing it with a visit to Reid's last year, and found it sadly lacking in comparison. We were not offered additional food at any time, and tea was not refilled.   Loved it! Got the Ritz club sandwich no egg & strawberry daiquiri. Very reasonably priced and big portions. Others got fish n chips & burgers which were all good. Sat inside on balcony and staff were great up there. Only downside was the chips were cold for all of us.   We couldn't fault this place! We asked for a table and were asked if we wouldn't rather have a table on the balcony and as it was raining, why not! We ordered our drinks and food, which came out soon after. Absolutely no complaints at all about the food. Every dish was tasty, with large portions, and the club sandwich was the largest I've ever seen! The price was reasonable too, considering where we were.   First time in Madeira. Decided on Afternoon Tea at the Ritz, for my girlfriend's birthday. Messaged them beforehand to arrange candles in her cake. They didn't disappoint. The waiter Carlos, is a gem, took control from the begining, sitting us at a prime table, overlooking the gardens. Came out with our food, candles in cake, to the sound of Happy Birthday from the speakers. All in all, it's a must do experience, even if you're only there the day off a cruise.   So many restaurants to choose from in Funchal it's hard to know where to start. We ate here twice in the space of a few days and the food and service was absolutely fine on each occasion. Nothing really to complain about, it is what it is. Outside seating is slotted between the pavement and road but if you get in the middle neither is too obtrusive.   Excellent service and location, with below average food. We ate here twice on our visit to Madeira. First time was for lunch. I had a great chicken burger and my wife an average Thai chicken dish. We gave her dish tge benefit of doubt. We loved the promise of an afternoon tea later in the week, so we made reservations for it based on the prominent related advertising on the menu. The tea was a colossal disappointment given the 35 Euro per person price. Scones and sandwiches were dry, had fat bread and stale. The desserts were average and my tea was just ok. Loved the freshly squeezed orange juice, great service and balcony seating, but if you want a great afternoon/high tea meal, you need to go elsewhere.   Beautiful atmosphere, directly to the street. I had the Tagliatelle with salmon. The taste was perfect but I paid 18euros for the Tagliatelle and it was just a small plate. So the taste is good but its not that much. When its okay for you that you go to the MC Donalds after the dinner than its okay :) Also the service was not that friendly and we recommend that it was not that much but they dont care about that.   I can't recommend this restaurant at all. We had some coffee which was okay and a Burger. The burger was really bad, first they tell you they cook it well done... When they served it, it was still raw inside (just a tiny bit to raw for my taste). After my complain they brought me a new one, that one was grilled to death. So you can have your burger either still living or totally overdone. Also there is no ketchup or Sauce on the burger... And don't get me started on the fries... They were way to salty.   We had only drinks but very good at this place. Service was exceptional. Been there twice. Also stayed late and the waiters and waitresses were very patient and allowed us to finish our drinks with friends. Had also ice cream which was good. May try there main food menu at some point.   First things first: no, this has nothing to do with The Ritz in London. Neither are the prices similar so have a seat - you won't have to remortgage your house to dine here. We had dinner here outside in March and it was pleasant. The food was great, the staff were decent though a bit rushed and there was live music too. The sangria however didn't impress - it had too much crushed ice so was more like a wine slushie with fruit, but other than that all was well and would recommend dining here.   We came down to Funchal town for a few hours, , gorgeous place with beautiful gardens, lots of shops and bars. We had a browse around all the Xmas stalls with local produce and crafts, there was also a gorgeous mini village at the back of where the stalls were.. Bought some lovely wee Madeiran nic naks to take back home then came to the Ritz for a wee bite to eat and something to drink. We had tasty cheese and onion toasties which were adequate for the time of day,, we had a lovely glass of madeira wine with it, then went onto have a jug of white sangria which was also very nice. Beautiful inside the building aswel as outside, gorgeous wooden staircase inside which transports you back to how it probably was back in the day.   I bought their ice cream as it was a warm day but man.. their service was so bad and the ice cream was so disappointing! The young boy was not happy that I wanted to try a second flavour and when I asked if it was okay to try a third and last one to make my decision, he just said no and became impatient. The point of letting customers try different flavours is to help them to choose the ice cream that they wanna buy, isn't it? Why risk losing potential customers over a small spoon sample? Such a mediocre way to do business.. Plus, you really don't quite have that ice cream quality to say "no" to a customer asking for samples...this is nothing like Italian gelato as their ice cream lack both creaminess and taste. I went for a flavour that I didn't get to try (as I didn't like the two that he let me try) and was still disappointed. Don't be fooled by their name or their marketing.   This place made me really confused. At first i got my food before any drinks, so was sitting there thirsty for 15 min alike. Then while we were finishing we spent next 15 min waiting for ours plates to be taken and to be asked for anything more. In meantime all of tables around got served (even those that came later). Last time we came they had some problems with lack of staff, this now seems to have been resolved, and the current staff are friendly & courteous and service is good.   Was it Fred Astair who sung about "putting on The Ritz." Well the one in Funchal is opposite the lovely park and pretty good value for such a famous name. Pint of Super Bock for €4.45 and the most expensive cocktail is a Nikita at €7.95. A lovely spot to pass time in. Open til midnight but time to move on. Will be back....the Nikita is an alcoholic pineapple milkshake .. yum. Still yum in 2023 according to Madge and Tima. Beer up to 4.95€ a pint..Nikita no increase.   Cafeteria very near to the drop off point for p&o coach transfer. Pleasant atmosphere with park just across the road. Pictured are tuna mayo sandwich (tasty but comes with quite a lot of mayo), and the chocolate cake with ice cream which was delicious.   Absolutely delicious food! This restaurant is a bit pricier than other local restaurants but it is 100% worth it. Dont miss the ritz! Try the garlic butter shrimp, it is completely divine. The garlic bread is fabulous as well, the best I've had on the island so far. The fish and chips were fried perfectly crisp. So good we're planning another visit before our trip is over.   At first I thought it was going to be a tourist trap, but as a planned restaurant was full we decided on trying it out. This is some of the most delicious food I've had, we were seated on the balcony overlooking the park and could people-watch while eating. The garlic shrimp (a must have!) was magical, and their garlic bread equally so! My main was the Carbonara, very creamy with lots of meat. The style looks fancy but feels casual, waiters were efficient and professional. Overall the experience was lovely.   We visited The Ritz for lunch and tried the afternoon tea. The food was freshly made per order and was wonderful. Especially the scones was the best I've tasted.   We came here for the very last day of our stay on madeira. We had the 3 course dinner for 28€ per person and it was just awesome! The waitress was very kind and helpful with choosing the right dishes. The food was yummy, fresh and quite fast served. The amount of food was (madeira typical) way too much! =) We will come again.. what you get for what you pay is just great!
