  Absolutely stunning building and interior. First visit, service was good, glass of wine €9 a bit high but you’re in a unique place. We shared a cheese board which was €22 and although very well presented, it was a bit dull. Maybe just a bad choice as it was local cheeses and maybe there’s not a great deal of choice locally. At one point I wanted to visit the loo and on my way I asked a younger male waiting staff member where it was, he looked at me like I was some random passing scumbag looking to use the toilets. Rather snooty. I noticed the cakes behind the counter looked really nice and I also clocked the afternoon tea on the balcony option which looked interesting. Maybe next time.   Having passed this cafe a handful of times during my stay in Funchal, I decided to give it a try, as I tend to avoid Hemmingway (in this case Portuguese writer Ferreira de Castro) touristy cafes. But the rain had stopped, there was a tiny bit of sunshine, the terrace looked inviting and what better way to watch people passing by on the avenida and make my belly happy. I had the special Portuguese steak sandwich aka Prego especial à Golden and I must say, for me, the portion is huge. The picture you see is 3 out of the 4 cuts - for around 17 euros in a historic café, I couldn't complain. It's simple and delicious, as are the thick-cut fries. The service was friendly and as a souvenir for back home I bought a little bolo de mel - so nicely wrapped with the Golden Gate Grand Café logo ;) The inside of the cafe is really elegant, beautiful (I think it's been renovated) and really authentic - reminds me of all those colonial-style cafes. Go for it, especially for you romantics out there! Mas a chuva tinha parado, havia um pouquinho de sol, a esplanada parecia convidativa e que melhor maneira de ver as pessoas a passar na avenida e fazer a barriga feliz. Comi o sanduíche especial de bife português, também conhecido como Prego especial à Golden e devo dizer que, para mim, a porção é enorme. A imagem que vês é de 3 dos 4 cortes - por cerca de 17 euros num café histórico, não me posso queixar. É simples e delicioso, assim como as batatas fritas em cortes grossos. O atendimento foi amigável e como lembrança para voltar para casa comprei um pequeno bolo de mel - tão bem embrulhado com o logotipo do Golden Gate Grand Café ;) O interior do café é muito elegante, bonito (acho que foi reformado) e muito autêntico - me lembra todos aqueles cafés de estilo colonial. Vá em frente, especialmente para vocês, românticos!

  Not great. We ordered club sandwiches - hoping as an old style cafe they would get it right. For the price we were charged, came with stale chips from a packet, low quality mayo, no bacon ( but some cold cut) , over fried eggs, no edges trimmed.   Astoundingly good Piña Colada they make at this place! The inside looked really nice and was of very high quality. We ordered a Club Sandwich and a Tosta Mista (Ham and Cheese Sandwich). The Club Sandwich was quite good, but also a bit expensive for my taste. The Tosta Mista was an absolute impudence, completely dry, no taste, cold ham and cheese. I really wonder how they manage to sell these kind of sandwiches to actual human beings… Might be coming back for the Piña Colada, but unfortunately for not much else.   Thought we'd give this a try as a treat, it is significantly more expensive than other restaurants in central funchal which might explain why it never seemed that busy during our stay. Anyway as soon as you sit down it feels a bit special. The staff must have been sweltering in their white jackets but nevertheless the service was friendly and efficient. We only had a main course but that was delivered with great ceremony with silver salvers and domes to keep the food warm. The food itself was well presented, large portions and piping hot. No complaints whatsoever. You unquestionably pay for the experience but as a small treat it was well worth it.   I was here a while ago, but I didn't find the time to write a review until now. The food was ok, nothing special and very pricey for that. The thing that really annoyed me and my friends was that the waiters only ever addressed the men in our group, never the women. The men were asked which table we preferred, they were given the menus, and when it came to the wine, they were the ones who were asked which wine we wanted as a group. They were also the ones who were given the wine to taste it, never even considering the women in the group (my female friend was the one who initially asked for the house wine to share). We were 2 men and 2 women, but it felt like the women did not exist in the world of these waiters. Very disappointing! And it’s one of the most expensive restaurants in Funchal. Would not recommend.   I went to Golden Gate on January 26th, after arriving to Funchal, since I have not visited Madeira for over 10 years. I had asked for a queijada and a chocolate milk and both of them were of inferior quality. The queijada was quite small and hardly any taste and the chocolate milk had no flavor whatsoever. The chocolate milk was just regular milk with a bit of chocolate in powder, and with a quantity of powder to give just a bit of colour, hardly. That was what annoyed me the most, because this was supposed to be a high end coffee place, but the products were very low quality. As for the service, nothing special, average or less than that. I have been much better served and have better products from other cafes that are quite less expensive. Isso foi o que mais me incomodou, porque era para ser uma cafeteria de alto padrão, mas os produtos eram de baixíssima qualidade. Quanto ao serviço, nada de especial, mediano ou inferior a isso. Fui muito melhor servido e tenho produtos melhores de outros cafés que são bem mais baratos.

  You are paying for untrained staff with fancy uniforms. The food was OK, but the bottled water did not come from the bottle that it was served in. The seal was broken when it arrived and tasted awful. The Tuna sandwich was more tomato than Tuna. That said the salmon and cream cheese had plenty of salmon (but too little cream cheese). Over 40 Euros for a couple of sandwiches, one soft drink and water it should be absolute top notch. Had much better value and taste about 20 yards away!   We loved the attention to detail and the food was great and we didnt mind paying the little extra on prices. We became daily regulars by the end of the week. However we're let down by slow and unresponsive service this Saturday evening. Even the headwaiter had better fish to fry tonight, chatting to all the locals and disappearing in a car then coming back. Obviously the owners weren't about tonight!   The place is in a great location and the staff are dressed in uniforms and give it a local and classy look. When looking at the menu the first alarm bells went off as there were too many dishes to be able to make them all good and the prices are high also. Decided to order the ham and cheese omelet as it seemed the safest option. The food was just bland and boring. Fine if you want a quick bite, but given the sheer amount of affordable great restaurants in the area, this is simply not good enough. The service was fine though and if you're looking to please all in your group, this could be a reasonable location as their huge menu has something for everyone.   We stopped for lunch and I had a burger, my other half had a pizza. The menu wasn't massive, but my burger was good. The pizza however was cold, clearly it had been sat on the side for a while. As you take in the sites and the passers by as you enjoy your meal outside you soon realise that you are probably sat at the original ocean gate to what was I presume a barron island in times gone by.   We thought we would dine here on our last day today the 6th Nov. What a disappointment. The meal menu was Ltd...toastie, baguette, sandwiches omelette or cheeseburgers.. we chose the latter. We waited 25 mins for it and when arrived both burgers were raw and cold soonas you cut into it. I called the waiter he apologised, took them away...25 mins later he came back with cooked hot ones. By that time our pot of tea for two had gone cold after 50 mins....adrian had a lager and I didnt want anything else ...I wanted to just go. .   The place is beautifully presented after a recent refurbishment and the staff are very attentive and polite. Our shared cheese starter was generous and tasty. My husband’s main course of chicken with sage stuffing was attractive and tasty but vegetables were an extra €8. My paella was full of seafood and chicken but was bland and wet, nothing like the Spanish dish. We chose one of the cheaper bottles of red wine, €33, that tasted weak and thin, like a €3.50 supermarket cheapie. In all, the food and wine at €114 for two with a shared starter and without a dessert, was overpriced and the meal did not live up to the immaculate surroundings.   Great place to people-watch. The strawberry daiquiri was very good. We ordered the bruschetta with cheese and tomato. It tasted very good but it was more like a bread-pizza. The coleslaw was an unexpected but very good addition to the bruschetta. The chips, unfortunately were stale... probably been sitting out too long. The macaroons were gorgeous, except for the time when they served me an old macaroon, which was a bit tough. Coffee is ok, but the cakes are fabulous.   On our latest trip to Funchal, we decided to treat ourselves to an evening meal at this famous restaurant, recently re-opened. The location is central, staff reasonably attentive (they did on occasion seem to forget who was waiting for what) and the food was just satisfactory. My wife and I are vegetarian and there is a separate vegetarian menu, which is a nice change. We started with Italian bread (thre miniscule pieces) then a soup starter (hot and tasty but with three croutons) followed by stuffed peppers for my wife and vegetables of Provence for myself. The food is served with a flourish from under silver domes - my wife was extremely underwhelmed when what appeared from under her dome was a single stuffed pepper with no vegetables. At the prices charged this is a joke. My vegetable "stew" was adequate but not what I would expect at a top class restaurant. Wine is good but expensive and after an initial flourish by the waiter who called back once to top up our glasses, we were left to fetch the bottle from the nearby table and top up our own glasses. The best part of the meal was the excellent tiramisu. We did expect prices to be high but service didn't match the prices and the food certainly didn't. We are unlikely to re-visit, which is a shame as the location is magical.   They spent a fortune remodeling this place to bring back the grandeur. I got a table on the 2nd floor balcony for dinner and ordered up a cut of meat, which my waiter referred to as "the big one."   Beautiful place to stop and have lunch. We both had a cooked meal, bit bland not much to talk about but ok. But what you must have is a desert. They are stunning.   Only stopped here for a tea and coffee. The decor was nice and they served earl grey which pleased me! Only 4 stars as the coffee came cold and had to be sent back but this was just a mistake.
