A wonderful setting above the cliffs in Funchal generating a terrific atmosphere. The waiting staff certainly knew how to keep the guests happy with well drilled attentive service. Stunning location with wonderful views. Quite a WOW factor. But the service wasn’t what you’d expect from a high class, expensive restaurant. Didn’t seem to know what the evening’s specials were, confusion over a drinks order & one waitress had a very miserable demeanour. Our starter was just average fayre but the red snapper main course was delicious. All in all felt quite disappointed because it was quite expensive & the experience didn’t match up to the price tags. Not our usual experience of this restaurant. We had a late reservation 8.30 were greeted well by very friendly and efficient staff. We waited 1 hour and 10 minutes before receiving any of the food we ordered. In the meantime staff apologised and kept us updated. When the food did arrive the enjoyment of the occasion was lost and so we did not fully appreciate the chefs efforts. We will be back but with have some nagging expectations. Our afternoon tea could and should have been so much better. It tasted bland and included a tiny tasteless bit of processed cheese and tiny slither of ham in one mini sandwich and a sandwich of two small pieces of Ryvita? The slices of sponge proved dry and unappetising. Shame about the service too, nobody came by to ask if everything was okay, we had to find someone to ask for another cup of tea and coffee and twice we asked for the bill. That was the most amazing dinner I had in my life and I went to some Michelin stars restaurant. The salmon was an explosion of flavors, super well combined with the rest of the ingredientes in the dish. The fish was perfectly cooked and the white chocolate moon on the desert was a full on experiment of exotic flavors. The food was a 10, and the restaurant is on the cliff with a big window that you can see the ocean and it looks you are in a boat. The price-quality is a 10 as well. We paid 170€ two people with wine, 3 starters, 2 mains and desert. The only thing in my opinion it can get better is the service. It didn’t look that they were very organized and it looks that they were lacking more waitresses as they lasted a bit in attending our table. Also they didn’t explain too much about the wines and when they removed our starters they delayed a bit in bringing the mains. It’s not a big thing but I am pretty sure that if things can improve all the reviews will be a five stars. We had a wonderful experience at Avista — the food was innovative and well executed (we were on the Mediterranean side of the restaurant), the service was friendly and professional, and the views were spectacular — the floor-to-ceiling glass, basically hanging over the water is hard to beat. Definitely start with drinks at sunset (once night falls, you won't see much out there). We loved that they welcome kids too — a high chair was prepared for our one year-old, and the staff were so lovely to her. One thing that would make it even better is if they had filtered local water as an option instead of relying on imported San Pellegrino; shipping water across the sea is so wasteful — you'd definitely appreciate that as you look out on the beautiful Atlantic from your dining table. (Many higher end restaurants and hotels now have a filtration system that can serve carbonated water too). If we were staying in Madeira for longer, we'd definitely make the effort to come back regularly! We love this place and have been here many times in our past visits to Madeira. The staff and service are outstanding, as are the surroundings. The only negative unfortunately was the food. My wifes food was ok (not great), but my vegetarian option was poor, which is such a shame (by contrast on our last visit to Funchal it was one of the best meals we had). We will continue to return here, but perhaps only for drinks to enjoy the amazing views. The food was fantastic, well executed and presented for each dish. The service was a bit spotty and not as professional/knowledgeable as we would expect from a restaurant of this caliber. Booking a table was a bit challenging due to its popularity, but the attentive and informative staff made the wait worthwhile. Opted for the Bistro Experience 4-course menu, and it was an excellent choice. The soft shell crab starter was divine, and the veal cheek and Rio seafood stew were both fantastic - the stew was an absolute winner! The food here is very good. However we were a bit disappointed with the level of service we received. Our waiter seemed to be lacking in experience and didn't do a great job explaining the menu or what sauces/sides pair well with various fish courses. The goat cheese on one of our starters was frozen hard, but our waiter did not know if this was normal or not when we asked him about it. We then waited an hour between our starters and the main courses arriving, which seems excessive, even for European standards and when the restaurant was half full. We did ask about the wait and received an unfriendly reply essentially saying 'this is how long it takes'. They did then check and gave us a time of a few minutes more, but it could have been handled with a bit more class. We decided not to get a dessert as we didn't want to wait another hour. With all this being said, we had great service from the sommelier, who helped us pick a great bottle of wine. Overall the food was excellent, but we were let down by the service and our overall experience was tainted as a result. Maybe it was just an off night for the staff and this is not the norm. We've been regular customers for 2 years and have previously come with our tiny dog. However, today, we were refused the entrance on behalf of the law. I've looked into this, and no law states dogs are prohibited. It seems it’s a personal choice rather than a legal requirement. We’ve been coming regularly here for 1,5 years and loved the food and the service. We already came already with a tiny kind dog who just sleeps on the floor. Today they refused us saying that if there is an inspection and it’s not a service dog then they will pay a fee. Who in their right mind would be bothered by a tiny chihuahua? Ridiculous. Avesta Restaurant is a serene paradise overlooking the ocean and with a vantage point to see the sun set. The food and service are incredible and we loved every dish and drink we ordered. The coconut gazpacho was unique and very good, as was the watermelon salad. I definitely recommend the scallop risotto. Dropping off one star only because there were a couple of opportunities to improve service which seem a bit picky but when we moved from the bar to our table the server gave us the wrong drinks, we interacted with many servers but the person who brought our mains again gave us the wrong dishes (mixed up me and my partners) and when I paid the bill I was charged incorrectly. A few servers were coughing throughout the night which made me a bit on edge. I’m m sure these details can be worked out and would still recommend this as a must go place for people visiting Funchal. We ate here purely by a last minute recommendation from a guest at our hotel. So disappointed that this wasn't on my radar for the previous days we spent on Madeira. Outstanding; every course was a taste sensation and the sides you could order complimented the mains even more. The waiters also know their wines and were incredibly helpful in guiding us to another Portuguese wine we did not know about and loved. After eating at Williams a few nights earlier and spending double there and coming away very disappointed this certainly made up for it. First thing your reservation system doesn’t give you the option to decide Asian or Mediterranean restaurant. I didn’t know that are 2 different restaurant. Up for a special experience in Funchal? Avista surely delivered such special evening for us. We enjoyed the 6 course “innovation” menue in combination with a wine pairing and it was delicious. We had a lovely dinner for our first wedding anniversary. We got a table right in front of the seafront which was perfect. Our waiter was very welcoming and gave us some good advises what to order. We had a starter which we shared along with some homemade sweet potato bread. As main dish we had tuna and the black angus rib. The last was praised as prepared for ten days and the sauce was made of the meat juices which was also special (waiter said no additional sauce was needed and he was definitely right). I had walked by Avista a few times before I finally decided to give it a try. I was intrigued by the beauty of the entrance and the variety of the menu, but I was not prepared for what I was about to experience. I was greeted by Claudio and he gave me a tour of the whole restaurant. The garden terrace is incredible. The ocean and cliff views showcase the Funchal coastline. I decided to sit on the upper patio to get some sun and even better seaside views. I enjoyed superb cocktails made by both Claudio and Jessica. I decided to stay for a snack as I couldn't bring myself to leave the atmosphere. I ordered the chorizo starter. It was perfect, warm chorizo on top of bread that was sitting in the chorizo oil. Claudio helped me choose a wonderful glass of red wine to accompany this dish. I finished off with a dry dirty martini and some Madeiran rum. Don't miss coming to this restaurant while in Madeira. I can guarantee you will be amazed when you step through the door. UK Mothers Day - decided to take family and friends for Afternoon Tea. Been staying in the Cliff Bay for over 20 years and have had lovely Afternoon Tea in both Cliff Bay and Avista. 6 of us arrived and were seated inside as too windy to be in the garden. A plate was placed in front of each of us with what looked like 5 hors d’oeuvres - breadstick wrapped in tiny piece of ham/Rivita biscuit with egg etc - not finger sandwiches. Two 3-tiered stands were brought containing rest of food. Scones’ contained no fruit and were like dry muffins. Cream thin and tasteless. Middle section of cakes quite good, soft and tasty. Bottom row, slabs of what appeared to be Madeira and Chocolate cake, were so dry almost inedible. Tea was lukewarm and one guest had to ask for sugar. Staff (who usually are brilliant) didn’t come near us. After an embarrassing hour or so decided to give up where upon a member of staff appeared and said they had to move the tables ready for the evening meal and would we leave soon. In our 70s we have never been asked to leave a restaurant and we were horrified. For this pleasure we paid €150. Um prato foi colocado na frente de cada um de nós com o que pareciam ser 5 aperitivos - palito de pão embrulhado em um pedacinho de presunto / biscoito Rivita com ovo, etc. - não sanduíches. Duas barracas de 3 níveis foram trazidas contendo resto de comida. Os scones não continham frutas e pareciam muffins secos. Creme fino e sem gosto. Visited the Avista mediterranean for the first night and the staffs are warm and knowledgeable with the food. It is so wonderful that we decided to make a second visit to Avista Asia the next day. Highly recommend the black pork with the grilled pineapple side. The staffs knows each of the dishes very well and explained clearly on what to expect for each dish. The wine recommendation from the staffs are also top-notch. The Yuzu dessert was also next level. Rich and layered yuzu flavour, sweetness is just right, unlike the typical western dessert that are too sweet. I would recommend the Mediterranean than the Asia though. The sushi ingredients are fresh, however not the most traditional. Sushi rice is bit too wet and sticky. We ordered the tuna carpaccio dish which the tuna taste was bit too over-marinated and covered the tuna itself. Great service, great location. The food was inconsistent, going from really very good to bland. Despite being served with a lengthy and rich description by the sommelier, the white wine was served hotter than it should. At this price point I would expect a bit more consistency and flavour throughout. I'm sure Avista will be able to correct these issues in the future and earn a 5 star review and it may well have been just a bad day. Either way I enjoyed my time there. My girlfriend and I had the 6 course experience menu with matched wines. I am a vegetarian so they adapted it for me and really did try to make different dishes rather than just leave the meat/fish out like some places. Really quality food in a lovely environment outside. I don't normally post reviews unless they're 5 stars, but in this case, I had to comment because the experience was terrible, and the worst restaurant we've had in the island. Service was slow, took a long time to just even get the menu, and even longer to get our food. By the end we had to wave our waiter down to get the check, and didn't even wait for the tea and coffee. It really spoilt the evening and we couldnt wait to get out. The food was average, we had the degustation and it was underwhelming We've definitely had better in restaurants that weren't on the Michelin Guide. Overall our experience was worse than expected and I don't recommend this place. We had an uncomfortable situation with the waitress/maitre because we 'failed' to properly choose the type of menu when we reserved (and we are sure no one offered us any choice when reserving). In the end it was fixed, but she insisted so much on the failure being our responsibility that we felt bad about that. I also think that the prices are very expensive for a Portuguese standard: 33 euros for a risotto with 3 scallops (literally 3) is way above of what I think is a fair or reasonable price. The wine is also really expensive: the cheapest option was around 40 euros for a bottle that is worth 10 euros in the supermarket (so 4x the bottle price, when 2x is the average on most of the Portuguese restaurants that I have visited). All things considered, and seeing the good reviews here, we decided to try it hoping for a top-chef experience, but unfortunately this was not the case in the end :( The food was good but not amazing (I was expecting way better food for this prices). Also we couldn't finish the risotto (even when hungry) because it only tasted to cheese (too much for my taste). The ambient (at night: dinner) was a bit decadent (sleepy background music and a majority of old people). Slightly disappointing upon a great experience last year. Sushi was great, sashimi of salmon and tuna rather tasteless and tendon in it. Paksoi served with the ribs was not fresh. Softshell crab rolls served without the shell is missing the point (that might be a personal thing). Beer ordered arrived after the meal. This is a place where you would go for the overall experience. The day before we ate at least as good for a third of the money and the service was more consistent. I hope they can get their act together, because last year we truly enjoyed diner at Avista and it was worth it. The best dinner during our one week stay in Madeira. The service, the food and the view all contributed to the great experience. Chef Benoît Sinthon's other restaurant Il Gallo d'Oro was fully booked so we opted for Avista's Asian menu. Nikka sour cocktail was on point. The food was really tasty and well presented. The wine pairing (Malhadinha Late harvest) that came with the dessert was perfect. We'll definitely be back to try their Mediterranean menu on our next visit to Madeira. My dad has seafood allergy, which we’ve told the staff at the restaurant. He repeatedly asked if the food contained any seafood, the waitress said no. However there was caviar in the food, which we’ve luckily found out before he tasted the appetizer. Otherwise the tartare was nicely seasoned and good. For the main course we ordered steak, which was ok, however the gave us the wrong sauce which was already poured onto the steak and we got charged for a second sauce we didn’t order. The wine we ordered costs about 8-9€ in shop, but the price that Avista charges is 38.50€. The sommelier was a bit arrogant and not really helpful in choosing a wine. Overall a huge dissapointment, definitely the worst experience on our trip to Madeira. Other restaurant we’ve visited were great, this one was awful. Such a fantastic Restaurant. The staff was super friendly. We felt always very welcomed with our 4 months old daughter. The staff even prepared a spontaneous desk on the balcony so that my wife could eat dinner and breastfeed, without disturbing other guests! Very delicious meals and wine collection. Afternoon Tea at Le Suites new swanky upmarket restaurant called Avista, and yes the views are stunning. The afternoon tea is billed as a modern version of what you get down at the main hotel. 25€ per head. Lots of tea on offer, we requested vegetarian options for our savoury and whilst I liked the twists on savoury items my wife wasn’t so sure. The cakes all had a mousse soft texture, the scones were nice but again the cream was so light we genuinely thought it was squirty cream. Tip for hotel would be to create a simple menu online and in print as nobody seem to know what the deal was, vegan option should be available, and maybe stick to the classics, cheese/ cucumber, humous, avocado/ roast veg, quiche, and where was the Madeira cake or pasta de nata. We dined here on three separate occasions and sampled both the Asian menu and Mediterranean menu. For both restaurants, the views are amazing. We found the staff serving the Asian menu slightly more attentive and better overall than the staff serving the Mediterranean menu. The Asian tasting menu is outstanding. It has a wonderful variety of sashimi, Japanese A5 wagyu, and Korean style ribs. Since my family has an eggplant allergy, the restaurant was also able to substitute a duck dish in place of an octopus dish made with eggplant. All dishes were packed with flavors and absolutely delicious. We have eaten in many Michelin-star Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Thai and other Asian-inspired restaurants worldwide, and the chef here would rank amongst the best we have experienced. The Mediterranean menu was also good, but not as amazing and delicious as the Asian menu. There were some quality dishes like the scallops with risotto and the black pork chorizo, but there were also some disappointments like the veal tomahawk and beef rib steak (which were very fatty and tough for such expensive pieces of meat -- they should have been much higher quality). Overall really disappointing experience. Left very annoyed which is very unusual as everywhere else in Madeira the service was absolutely unbelievable. We sat at the table without anyone giving any attention when trying to order for 15 minutes since we sat down. When we finally got to order the manager was trying to sell us more food than we were asking for even after saying no they were trying to push it onto us which really set a bad and unwelcoming mood. We ordered drinks and two times in a row they brought out the wrong drinks and not a single apology after waiting 20+ minutes for the right ones. The same with other stuff we asked for the table we had to ask twice, meanwhile they were sitting and chatting with other tables. Even when we spoke about our unsatisfactory experience to the manager she didn’t care and said nothing. The food was very good though and really enjoyed the sushi and drinks! Afternoon tea at Avista was unfortunately very disappointing. Having had lovely dinners here I had hoped for lots of flavour and something with a bit of twist. I didn't expect half a breadstick with prosciutto ham wrapped around it. Ryvita with egg. Plastic ham and cheese in white bread and slices of what looked like shop bought cake. Not what I was expecting from Avista, I should have taken my daughter to Reids Palace. Albeit more expensive but the service at Reids is very attentive. The scallop risotto stole the show with some of the best scallops we’ve ever had. The views and hospitality are great, though the atmosphere for lunch is very sleepy. I would imagine it’s more lively at night! The duck was also delicious. The skin was crispy in some parts and not others, but overall, you can’t go wrong. Feel free to skip the couvert. The olives and bread are nothing special. Save room and just get an appetizer instead. The mashed potatoes are forgettable. Amazing location with views over the ses from the outdoor dining area. We actually wanted to try the 2-michelin starred restaurant from the same owner but were too late to get a booking. Nevertheless, this restaurant was a bib gourmand in the michelin guide, so we still wanted to give it a try. The premises were well kept, and the kitchen was neat and clean. Great selection of wines, and their cocktails were well made as well. We decided to try their asian menu and chose the duck dim sum, sushi, hot roll, and pickled cucumbers. The couvert was among the best I've had. First time I got the opportunity to try smoked olives which was quite the surprise. Everything was delicious but I think we had higher expectations than what we were served. There is something quite off-putting when I get sushi with strawberries, might be a preference. But I was pretty taken aback from the sundried tomato sushi pieces... Yes, fusion meals can sometimes be the best innovative dish ever, but sundried tomatoes and sushi was taking it a bit too far. Great service, friendly waiters, and amazing ambience. The location is worth a visit and probably the best table I've ever eaten dinner at. For this I would say you should go. But the food and service is carried by the location. Booked a table for 6.30. When we arrived we were told by the surprised waiter that the restaurant wasn't open yet but we could take a seat and wait until 7. Seems odd, why allow bookings before opening? That set the tone and the rest of the evening was okay. We had five different waiters throughout the evening. One slice of bread, gazpacho, and celeriac for a main left me hungry. We waited 20 minutes to order a dessert and decided to get the bill instead and call it a night The thing is that's not 'bad' and my review might seem picky. But with the bill coming to €100+ with a few drinks on Madeira, it's a minimum standard to leave feeling full, and have attentive service. All the ingredients are there and thus could be a world class restaurant with that location but for now I think it's a case of style over substance. We stumbled across this place as it was close to our hotel and looked good. We booked in advance for lunch as dinner was seemingly fully booked our whole stay. I would really recommend this as a lunch spot though as the views are incredible and you wouldn't see that after dark. My partner had the black scabbard fish which I (a non fish fan) thought was good and he loved. I had the gnocchi dish which was excellent as well. We had high expectations given other reviews. After being seated in the bar area and given a bar menu we had to wait 25minutes for our drinks. No sooner had they arrived than we were told our table was ready, they showed us through advising our drinks would follow. 10minutes later we had to ask for our drinks. 35 minutes in to our visit we were both frustrated and thirsty. Asked to speak to the manager who was only a couple of meters from us, he clearly had more important matters as he then walked straight past us before returning around 5 minutes later, what a patronising man. Had this not been granted Michelin status it would have been 5 stars from me but the superior acknowledgement of a Michelin rating suggested a perhaps more experimental food experience than what we had. My family and I ate here last night. There were 5 of us including a vegetarian and 2 vegans. This was the last night of our holiday. We could not have found a better restaurant. We only wish we could have come back again before we went home. I was worried that we might not find suitable dishes for the veggie/vegans. I needn’t have worried. There were vegan options including stunning homemade starters of vegetable crisps, bread, olive oil, beetroot hummus, olives with herbs and an exquisite smokiness. Wow! Our starters and mains were equally impressive - scallop risotto, vegan meatballs with a gentle curried lentil sauce, gnocchi with tomato sauce, all delicious. We had peanut brownie and an exotic fruit sphere (a work of art with mango/coconut). Our jug of Sangria was fruity and fragrant. It looked almost too pretty to drink. The setting was perfect. We saw the lights on the hills appear as the sun set. Oh and the music had a chilled out Ibiza vibe. So cool. We loved every track. The staff were so helpful and pleasant. Lovely people. Total five star experience and my personal favourite restaurant that we visited. You could easily spend an entire afternoon watching the ships sail by from the beautiful garden setting with incredible views out to sea. Starters good but the mains were really special. For any meat eaters: don’t miss the black pork presa. This was beautifully cooked and absolutely delicious. I had it with the smoked mash - fab - and BBQd pineapple with lime. The Avista restaurant forms part of the PortoBay suites hotel but is open to the public, reservations are highly recommend. The restaurant offers a range of seating areas throughout its terrace from on the cliff edge or close to the main building. It's a secret garden oasis with the tables closest to the cliff given added privacy with plants and bushes. The service was average and even speaking Protuguese the server was not understanding my requests. On a positive note you are provided with a call button for service which is a welcome addition in a large setting. The food was ok/average but not amazing, the dishes are small and underwhelming and some of the options we tried to order were off the menu which was disappointing. For a fantastic view of the east of Funchal bay and the opposite Reid's hotel, Avista certainly delivers but you won't get sunsets and the food was mediocre and expensive. I'd recommend as a non guest go for a few cocktails as the selection and quality was great but skip the food and expensive bill. The food design and the presentation was spectacular,but the food itself was not the best. We also ordered water and the waiters kept coming and refilling the cup which was annyoing. There were as many waiters as the people inside the restaurant.But the view is incredible in the night. In theory it is a restaurant with a great view but even booking 10days in advance we didn’t get a table with a view. We saw some people complaining as well and they got the table. Well, we didn’t and I don’t think this should be the way. Food is nothing special and we were even advised by a waiter to not order a dish because it was not worthwhile - the special shrimp one (the portion was too small - never seen anything like this). Wine list is not great - few options and very expensive but it’s a common practice in the area. There’s better options in the area with better views, food and service. Had a fabulous meal there yesterday. Staying at Cliff Bay again so tried it Beautifully done out in wooden tones with fabulous views of Funchal. Great staff very friendly and helpful. Had the best fillet steak for years and 3 course a la carte meals for two with water, bread and and a decent bottle of wine for 130 euros. If we had not booked elsewhere for tonight we would have eaten again.
