  We expected much more than it was. Appetisers was ok, cheese plate was nice ( nothing special), black pudding was good. For main dish we took salads ( tuna & chicken) ; both were not ok, some strange taste of lettuce. We also ordered a sardines, which were over fries, very bitter. Atmosphere and stuff was friendly.   We went at lunch and had the traditional caldeirada stew cooked in the ground - we knew to expect a boiled stew of meats and some vegetables but with that in mind were surprised by how tasty the whole meal was including the cheese to start and cake/pineapple to finish, even the stew was tasty and we really enjoyed the whole meal. The setting is lovely, in a converted bathhouse featuring historical tiles. We also had the natural spring water just outside before our meal, which was really tasty and worth trying. If you plan to try the caldeirada I would go here. Atmosphere was calm and relaxed because we weren't in the main room of the restaurant. The food would have been ok for half the price, but overall overcooked (vegetables) or underdressed (salad). That the waitress didn't asked whether the food was good shows a lot. They said that the cozido had been cooked for 6-7 hours at 80-90 degrees C (buried in the hot ground). Don't order an appetizer unless you're going to split one cozido plate!   If you are looking to try caldera baked stew, this is supposed to be the best. ... Well, if this is the best, I can't even imagine how bad is the worst one. It's just variety meat boiled, with vegetables being cooked down to grey lump. Not really spiced to taste like anything, except disappointment. 17 euros for this, just for it being boiled 5 minutes down the road in the hot spring, it's the definition of the tourist trap. The "legend" around the stew states that there is some taste from the sufuric water in the food and I looked forward to it - but the reality is, it's just meat boiled in hot water, no extra taste. The only upside was the speed, but it is no wonder when food is preboiled. I saw people paying with some vouchers - if you can get a great discount, it might maybe be worth.   If you like meat then the cozido is the meal for you. Slow cooked in the heat of the volcano. The meat eaters in our party really tucked into it. There was *far* too much for them to eat, they need to sort out portion control. There must be so much waste. We had the vegetarian option, this was really good, much better than expected.   This restaurant was recommended by my hotel. I'm a New Yorker and am a very picky foodie. Let me give it to you raw. The restaurant is not pretty, but imho, it's a hidden gem. You'll find it hidden down a private driveway. The owner and waitstaff were very nice. Maybe it's because we went at 3pm, an off time, but there was plenty of seating and the food came out hot and fresh. Contrary to travel blogs, we found the cozido das furnas to be very tasteful, very moist, and the meat all fell apart very nicely. The Lumpidas were cooked with garlic and butter so if cute they'd taste good. I'm not sure because i haven't eaten them before, but they seemed more chewy then mussels or clams. We also had the cod and a plate of salad. Cod was salty and dry. But tasted fine. The owner and staff were very friendly as well. I'd recommend this restaurant especially if you go at an off time. They had their gates closed at 4pm, so I believe they probably don't serve anyone from 4-6, the same as most of the establishments there.   Overall not a great experience. The food was average at best, I’ve had better for cheaper. One of the waiters was very busy theoretically carrying his team whilst the others were floating around miserably like a ghost in a cemetery; not what you want when you’re trying to eat.   Looking for a low keyed spot for Cozido? We walked in around 13h on a Sunday afternoon. They had Cozido, seafood, french fries and even a decent salad (for me, the vegan in the group). The one that ordered Cozido cldnt stop raving... The meat fell off the bone...etc . She said it was perfectly cooked. While many tables seemed to be reserved, our small party was able to be seated immediately without reservation.. and from what we could tell, it was one of (if not the only) restaurant that was serving Cozido without a reservation.   I did not like it at all! First of all it is not cheap. The beef is a chore to eat becouse it is like a chewing gum. The sardine is not gutted, which for me it is absurd.   Randomly found this place for food after the hot springs. This is hands down the best food I've had in the three months I've been in the Azores. The chicken beef(don't judge them by the translations lol) and it was amazing. Best chicken dish I've had in a very long time. I literally cleaned the plate. We also had the two different cheeses and bread on the menu and the garlic bread. All we're really good. 10/10 would recommend if you're near by.   Expensive. Food lacks in taste, freshness and in overall quality. What is their excuse not to use the freshest produces in such an island and so close to the sea?! The waiters were nice...ish. They were nicer than the average on the island but still very poor and not caring for costumers. They think they care because they care more than the guy next door but they are still not doing a good job. The place is dark, not cosy, not friendly and having pictures of food at the entrance should had been an warning sign to me. Not the worst place in the island but not better than "bearable".
