  Great food - I wasn't even that hungry, but had a dessert after even! Friendly service! Just the atmosphere could be a bit improved - the light where the pizza baker is too white and direct which is a bit irritating, especial after wine.   We arrived without reservation with a baby and they were very accommodating. It is now still low season, I would advise to make reservations, because you'll want to. Everything we ate was really good! We had some starters and the cataplana for main, and wine they recommended, our server Claudia made a nice recommendation not at all the most expensive one. She made special efforts to bring some toys for the baby, which was well appreciated. Thanks to the entire staff but especially Claudia. We will come back for the pizza as they were preparing them right in the room and they looked amazing, coming out of the wood fire oven.   When we arrived we loved the environment from the place, they took long to take our order but they were very friendly explaining the menu, everything went good with the starters but with the main dish we got codfish and grilled steak and was no flavor at all ( several times we have to put a lot of salt and pepper) the spicy sauce that we asked was not spicy at all, the meat was very chewy 🫢😱🙈, my fish and potatoes were swimming in oil, we couldn’t finish the plates because we were very disappointed 😔, we told the waitress about our bad experience but she didn’t apologize and just told us that she was going to let know the kitchen….   What a wonderful place! From the moment I walked in, I was welcomed with smiling faces from the staff. I had been wanting to try this place for a while and was now very excited to sit down and enjoy a great meal. When asking for a table for one, I was told that there were no tables available, as there were 3 large parties that evening. When they saw the disappointment on my face, they offered to bring a table in from outside and make a little space for me in the corner! It was perfect!   We went to Calhou Restaurant, based on the Google reviews and we were not wrong at all and I do want to take this opportunity to thank to all the people that wrote a good review about this place, because we had a great time there. I need to mention the fact that, we were a very big group, over 20 people with kids and we went there without making a reservation and we met Christina, the Owner, who was very nice and did her best to accommodate us and make us feel welcome, did arrange a table for all of us and, since then, we came back 2 more times, even though, we had to drive like 20 km every time, just to get there, but definitely worth it, because the food is great, everything we had was just delicious and the service, and everything was just great. Thank you very much Christina, we will definitely come back, when we'll be back to the Algarve. All the best to you from the happy group from Romania and keep up the great job that you are doing.   Went because it had so many good reviews but was disappointed. The seating outside is far to cramped, people kept struggling to get in and out of the seats. The menu is very reduced, the starters were very small portions and came at separate times rather than together… also you can’t tell by looking at the menu which you would need bread for, lucky we did get 1 bread which you have to pay separate (again a very small portion). Even the water is exactly enough to fill two glasses once! Then the main was overly huge, like wastefully huge, says on the menu its for 2 people but there was more than half left at the end. The main wasnt bad but the clams had loads of shells in them that you just have to power through with and everything did seem a bit too oily. I think our mistake was ordering Portuguese food, as we thought it was traditional Portuguese. When walking out we noticed everyone was eating the Italian menu, and complimenting the Pizza. So if you are looking for a great Pizza its a good place but not if you are looking for traditional sea food. To top it all off the bathroom facilities were very dirty in both mens and womens(where the glass door to the toilet wouldnt even close) All in all not a great experience. Acho que o nosso erro foi pedir comida portuguesa, pois pensávamos que era tradicional portuguesa. Ao sair percebemos que todos estavam comendo o cardápio italiano e elogiando a Pizza. Então, se você está procurando uma ótima pizza, é um bom lugar, mas não se você está procurando frutos do mar tradicionais. Para completar, os banheiros estavam muito sujos, tanto para homens quanto para mulheres (onde a porta de vidro do banheiro nem fechava) Em suma, não é uma ótima experiência.

  A shame that a group of 7 salty customers have left some nasty reviews! This place is a delight. Excellent Neapolitan style pizza, friendly and fast service and a naughty but oh so nice triple chocolate pie! Staff went out of their way to make sure everyone was comfortable, including providing blankets for those who were feeling a chill outside. It was very busy even at 6.30pm, so make sure to arrive early if you haven’t reserved a table.   Love this place! A glass of house white wine, lamb with salad and fries and a beautiful dessert spread with friends on a warm late summer night on the outdoor patio. We had the most wonderful service. Even though the place was packed, the long line outside the door moved fast and we were seated in no time. The staff was incredibly friendly, it’s a family business and they truly care. The food was delicious, we ordered a fish and a meat and a vegetable fish. Each person was hungry and very satisfied. They went the extra mile to accommodate our group when three more people showed up just before closing time, and even though the kitchen was closed, they served our hungry friends who had just arrived all the way from Funichiera salad and bread and wine. We’re told after beginning our starters that a table of 7 that arrived after us had ordered the same thing and hence we could not have it. Despicable.   We visited Calhou as recommendation from one of our friends and couldn’t be happier we did! The food was absolutely amazing. My boyfriend had the Calhou stake and I had the codfish house style, both dishes were delicious and the portions were big! The garlic cheesy garlic bread was really good as well. We had to wait a bit for a table as they only take reservations from 18:00 to 20:00 but the the wait was well worth it! I can say we would definitely be back! If I could give the service 10 stars, I would, with the quality of the food and price matching it. 1 starter, 3 mains and 2 desserts came to 60 euro and so tasty.   I went to Calhou with my fiancée and the experience was the best dining experience of my life. We had the cataplana (fish and shrimp) and it was so well-seasoned and flavorful. We also had the garlic bread with cheese and olives and it was delicious. We had pears and port wine with lemon ice cream, which by itself, was exquisite. What made the entire experience a true delight was our waitress Claudia, who treated us like family and went above and beyond to make our experience as enjoyable as possible.   Sad that our experience was not what we expected. Maybe our expectations were too high based off of the other reviews. We wanted to try the local Portuguese Cuisine and this was the spot we booked with high hopes. We had the prawn and fish cataplana and the Portuguese fillet steak. The steak had full cuts of arteries and tons of sinue (was definitely not a filltet) thr catapalana lacked a lot of flavour and was just a flat dish although a really big portion. We tried a pizza as a starter to share just because they look delicious and it was!! Would recommend this place for pizza only and good service but unfortunately the Portuguese Cuisine was not great.   Way too overhyped in my opinion. Steaks were terrible even though reviews said otherwise. Pizza was ok, but nothing special (too soggy) Unfortunately would not recommend this place for neither pizza or steaks.   This is an absolute treasure to portuguese cuisine. We highly recommend the cataplana which is masterpiece, but the unsung hero must be their bread! Meals are served with a homemade piripiri as it should be. Save this restaurant for the last evening because it will ruin most other restaurants for you.   My partner and I had a very mixed experience. She ordered margarita pizza (very few veggie options) which she enjoyed. I on the other hand ordered the sea bass which was TERRIBLE. Everything swimming in garlic, to the point it felt like it was stinging my mouth. Accompanying veg was soft and overcooked. And also swimming in garlic. My partner tried it and agreed. Waitress was also quite rude.   Absolutely the best meal we had during our week Albufera. Family owned and operated. Traditional Portuguese, wood fire style pizza and deserts. Great staff. Amazing chefs. Deserts were made artfully from old Portuguese family recipes. The restaurant is cozy. The parking is sparse. Be sure you have reservations. We had a friend dining with us that is vegan. She was able to find a few things on the menu that were flavorful and met her needs. Deserts were epic. We tried 4 and could not decide which was better. All uniquely flavored, none overly sweet.   What an amazing restaurant! All of our dishes were perfectly seasoned, exquisitely plated, and really gourmet. The service was outstanding. The owner spoke excellent English and while she was busy, always took the time to check on us. We were there during Holy Week, and we were treated to the owner pulling Easter breads out of the oven and then packaging them for local residents. What a treat! The owner is an exceptional baker and makes all of the desserts that are served. They were all delicious and beautifully served. I complimented her on her skills! This restaurant is a 'find' and seems to be a local favorite. It is not in downtown Lagos and is in an unassuming location. Inside it is beautifully decorated and feels like authentic Portugal.   Calhou has a great feel to the restaurant, cozy and busy with wood burning oven in the background. The wine was very good. We split a pizza to start which was very good, the pizza is so thin and light and sauce was very tasty. Our mains were average though which is disappointing after a great start. We had the traditional cod and pork tenderloin and both were solid if unspectacular. Especially seeing all the other pizzas come from the oven we definitely regret not just sticking with pizza for our mains as well. Service was slow but they were busy, could not get the bill to leave despite asking many times. Overall would return for the pizza.   Awful experience. They charged us 5 euros for tap water, also charged us for the container for taking leftovers. Although we read the staff was friendly they barely smiled, when we told them we were celebrating a birthday they didn’t even say congrats. Finally the fish and shrimp cataplana had so many bones you had to fight to get some food while getting everything messy and dirty. Edit: we asked for “water”, not purified sparkling water as the owner says. IF you decide to go I recommend say specifically “free water” or they will rip you off to charge you extra. Finally, if you can’t take constructive criticism to be better, you are doomed to failure if you are serving people.   Great place and super family friendly. The food was excellent and they had toys and all sorts of distractions for the kids which was great. Bring your own drinks for the kids if they drink milk.   A bit disappointed to be honest. We tried the cataplana with seafood and shrimp for two. While the ingredients were all great and tasted super fresh, the dish was simply too salty. We had to ask for additional water during the meal to wash down the salty taste.   We dined her two nights in a row… and if we were staying in Lagos longer, I would go again. We ordered a few things, but I absolutely LOVED the marinated carrots (appetizer) and the grilled sea bass and golden bream. There pizza was also delicious and I could tell each ingredient is carefully selected. This is a family owned and run establishment, and you can tell that they take special care and pride in the quality of ingredients.   Fantastic place! Do a reservation upfront, othervise you may end waiting in a queue ~20 mins to eat inside. Staying there feels like you came home and having a dinner - light, smells, sounds - all reminded me of home. Food is good. Especially pizza. They serve traditional neapolitan style pizza - which is the best in my opinion. We ordered one with shrimps and didn’t regret. It was delicious.   Went here after the restaurant next door was closing and I'm glad I did. The service was excellent and the staff went above and behind to make the dining experience enjoyable. I got the octopus salad as a starter and pork with clams as a main. Both were really good, except I did find the clams to be kind of gritty like there was still sand in them. I didn't finish it all but the rest for amazing. Overall, I would recommend this place for the pricing, portions and flavour and the welcoming service.   A real find. Very attentive and friendly staff in a cozy restaurant, full of atmosphere. We all had pizzas from the wood fired oven and they were an absolute hit with everyone. Great wine at very affordable prices. They even accommodated a very last minute request for some candles in a dessert and singing happy birthday to my son for his birthday. We went for local cuisine and what we had was delicious, however if you are seeking proper Woodfire pizza (not the pizza the tourist restaurants are serving) then go here - it is the real deal - just like in Naples.   We had a lovely evening at calhou. Ive marked it down a star because when we initially arrived there was some confusion around our table. We'd accidentally booked for 9 instead of 7 and the hostes was saying wed have to change our reservation to 7 on our booking app or we would have to pay for 9 people. Luckily the restaurant was able to resolve this and we cohld sit and eat our meal. My father and i had the traditional clam and pork cataplana which had great flavour. It was a large serving for two so we couldnt quite finish it, but i would definitely recommend. Someone else in our group had a pizza, because the restaurant is half Portuguese and half nepalese, he said it was a great pizza. Somone else had the baby squid and said it was delicious. My mother had the seabass which she enjoyed but was served with vegetables that weren't great over steamed and alittle bland. My bother and his girlfriend also had a cataplana but chose the octopus and sweet potato. They were quite disappointed with there meal and said it wasnt great. We also had starters i tried the octopus salad wich was tasty well seasoned and falvour full. My brother got some sort of fish pate whcih he said wasnt enjoyable and very salty.   The food is amazing, absolutely delicious and the presentation is immaculate! The female waitress and female host of the restaurant were incredible... extremely friendly, extremely polite, and the waitress even helped us to choose a starter! The experience would be 5 stars, only for the male member of staff. On arrival, he was reluctant to offer us a seat, until the female host stepped in and offered us a seat for two people. Thankfully, we were served by the waitress for the majority of our time, but the male waitor would begrudgingly step in from time to time to clear plates etc. What really ruined the experience was when myself and my partner had finished our meal, which were both amazing and delicious (and we told the male member of staff this), he shook his head in disapproval and took our plates murmuring "it's terrible to leave plates like that", referring to the small portion of food we left behind after our super filling meal! Despite the amazing service (from others) and the delicious food, this left a terrible taste in my mouth. I love food and especially seafood, and told everyone how beautifully cooked the food was.   Absolutely delicious pizza. Black pork tenderloin was also amazing. We loved the mix of Portuguese and Italian cuisine. Service was excellent too.   Everything looks good in this place the black pig tenderloin is a must get, I was debating on the cod or small squid and they recommended the squid, which is absolutely fantastic as well.   Excellent dinner at Calhou. The restaurant was full with a mix of local families and tourists. Our Cataplana was delicious. House wine was a perfect complement. The owner was extremely gracious and helpful. We were torn between the almond tart and the Algarve almond tart, so the owner gave us half of each so we could compare (both homemade by her).   Best steak in Portugal. I was torn on having the filet steak with peppercorn sauce but the waitress convinced me to try the Portuguese steak and I am so glad I listened to her. The steak is cooked in red wine butter and garlic with a smoked Parma ham on top and a fried egg, served with Potatoes. The steak was so juicy and tender. The garlic bread is wood smoked and delicious. My only regret is that I don’t live in Portugal and cannot go once a week. What a fantastic place. It truly lives up to its reputation.   We were at Calhou two times in the same week with our friends. We absolutely enjoyed the food and the hospitality. Everything we had was delicious, especially the lulinhas á casa, garlic bread and pizzas. The restaurant is family operated and they make you feel part of the family.   It’s weird this restaurant have so many positive reviews. Maybe it depends on what you order. Waited for a waiter really long. We had ordered a bread with olives and shrimps. We had only 8 shrimps for 15 euros- as for me, really overpriced. Also bread was over-baked with black spots. We called a waiter, she took the bread off, counted our shrimps (weird) and was going to bring us more shrimps. Then owner came to us, counted shrimps one more time (that was to much), and said that bread should be like that. Overall all stuff was just busy and ignoring, but the behavior of the owner was surprisingly disrespectful. We paid for that pity service and food and trying to forget spoiled evening. P. S. To owner’s reply - 1) we’ve never suggested to pay only for tea 2) before answering, please try to check facts about food that was taken away 3) probably customers are treated differently if they aren’t hungry and order only one portion.   We ate at this place twice in one week. Everything on the menu from seafood to pizza to desert is exceptional! The service is more than polite and overall the atmosphere is very familiar.   They are very busy as this is a very well-known place. Service is very slow so be prepared to wait a while. We had the sardine pate for starters which I don't recommend in the slightest. It's basically bread with what looks like store-bought paté which comes in the same plastic containers as butter. We then had the fish and shrimp cataplana which is big enough for three people. It was quite salty.   Wow!! What an amazing restaurant. Everything was perfect. The food was out of this world. We had the fish and prawn cataplana which was unbelievably delicious and such a huge portion. The octopus salad for entree was very fresh and the desserts were so tasty. The service was outstanding - all of the staff were so friendly and accommodating. Cristina the owner was so kind and such a lovely lady. Easily the best and most authentic Portugese meal we had in Lagos - don't waste your time with all the tourist traps in the town centre.   Absolutely the best in Lagos. I visited this place long time ago, 7 years or so, shortly after they opened. From small cozy little restaurant they didnt grow much in space but kept up the amazing food quality and service. The fish cataplana, the tender meat dishes and the garlic bread are to die for. They added a hood fire oven and the pizzas look delish. Definitely try this place if you stop by Lagos. Make sure to make a reservation bc the place is quite small and fills up quickly. It's a small restaurant, tastefully decorated and the owner, who also assists in the restaurant, is super thoughtful and speaks well English!   "It has happened": maybe the translation of the restaurant's name? I know calhou to an italian sounds like calore (warmth). And that's what we felt. The waiter is friendly, professional and funny. But the main course is the owner, the most awesome lady you'll ever meet. While the prices are ok, in line with rest of town, the food is way above: local, tipical, delicious. The best squidlets i have ever tasted in my life (quite the statement for an italian), no competition. The codfish was soft, flavourful and with a ton of complementary tasty veggies. It's obvious that the owner loves having a restaurant, feeding and meeting guests. She loves what she does and she loves people.   We stayed for 5 days in Lagos. This is the best restaurant we vote for our trip. It was so good that we ate there twice!! We ordered (as the photos). All were really good but I add recommendations on the one I super like!! *sorry if I couldn’t remember exact name of the menu Starter - Sardines with tomato sauce - Fish mixed in mayo sauce (my favorite) - Clams with garlic (recommended) - Octopus salad Main - Grilled sardines - Fillet steak with green pepper sauce (Recommended) - Fillet steak cooked in Portuguese style (cooked with egg on top and potato, im so so with this because you could find it in Lisbon and porto as well) - Baccala fish cooked in their style (recommended) - Grilled squids (super recommended!! I know its grilled squids that has everywhere but i dont know what they putted inside that make this dish different) Drink - we tried all red, white and rose sangria. Our favorite is white one!!! We also have their sweet which was good too but maybe this is enough to show that how much we like the place. Make sure to book before just because the place is quite small.   What an amazing dining experience! The wine was great and it was only 15 euros for a bottle. We ordered a special local dish for two and it was just unbelievable. The prawns, the potatoes, the peppers, the different kinds of fish... I had to order some bread for the leftover fish sauce. I can’t say enough good things about the place.   I ordered grilled fish with vegetables. While the fish was delicious, the vegetables (potatoes, beans, carrots and broccoli) were all incredibly overcooked. Worst of all, the broccoli was OFF!!! It looked and smelled horrible. I was surprised no one had noticed. The owner was very apologetic, she brought out some salad and freshly cooked broccoli. She even offered us a piece of cake with some shots at the end of the meal. I appreciated all that but really, the chef needs to learn to cook vegetables properly.   Really yummy food. It was a Sunday and it was empty and probably the only restaurant open in the area. One of the people came in and told us that this restaurant is usually so full you can't find space to move around. We had the callhou cod fish.. I really enjoyed the fresh chips (crisps). Husband ordered the fried shrimp in garlic butter and i personally enjoyed the sauce of that more than the callhou special. The almond tart was fabulous..   Good food and great hospitatlity. The waitress who I believe was also the owner was super nice and friendly. My daughter liked her so much she gave her a hug.   Space in the restaurant was very tight.. and we're not big people. We had the Tuna with sweet potato tapas, the mackerel and carrots tapas and the pork bites tapas (each around 5 euros) along with a basket of bread for 1 euro. It was enough for the two of us, but the pork was a bit dry. It was a bit pricey for what we had but was an interesting meal and they provided free samples of their 3 homemade liquors as an aperitif.   Very good restaurant serving traditional food. As well as being tasty, the portion sizes are reasonable too. Small on the inside with a nice interior. The staff are friendly and efficient.   Staff was attentive, but the food was mediocre at best. The vegetables were undercooked and the baby squids were not cleaned properly, also the clams were full of sand.   This was our favourite restaurant in Lagos during our vacation to the Algarve early Feb. It was so good, we came 3 times and made a special order for their octopus rice and their razor clam rice for our last meal. The staff was very friendly, the food was fresh, and delicious and it was something we all looked forward after a day of surfing or a day visiting the towns along the coast. The grilled salmon was expertly done with a delicious garlic butter sauce. The cataplana was worth the 20 minute wait as the broth and the sauce was just exquisite with all the fresh seafood and veg flavours blending together beautifully.   A great surprise! We came without reservation, and the staff tried so hard to get us a table. They did the same for everyone coming. Food was great and the price really low.   Incredible Portuguese meals in a quaint and comfortable setting. It seems family run, and the owner (I think) who served us was so very sweet that she made our vacation, I had to hug her on the way out! The food quality and service is significantly higher than other restaurants in the same price (13-20 Euros) per plate.   We were 4. The place was crowded despite it was just couple minutes past opening time. We took Clams with garlic and herbs, olives and bread for starters, it was a good choice. For the main course fish and shrimps cataplana - marvelous. The house wine is cheap, tasty and served in 0.5l-1l jugs. Service was ok. After the bill we got some local homemade drinks free to try.   I eat here pretty regularly and it is consistently fantastic. The food is delicious and authentic, the atmosphere is warm, and the owners make everyone feel like family. It's a little bit outside of the downtown area, but still within walking distance. Be sure to book a spot for dinner in advance during the summer months.
