This was the highlight meal of our trip to Lisbon. We had lunch here, and were blown away by each of the small plates. The staff were so friendly (it’s cash only but there’s a cash point right around the corner and accommodated us really well), the atmosphere is also very special, with few tables and very attentive service. Walk up restaurant, which is extremely popular. Be prepared to put your name down and head for a drink elsewhere or wait on the street. It's very small. honestly the food was amazing, i highly recommend the Octopus bao!! My mom wasn’t a big fan of it, but i loved it!! I came only for dessert and wine during dinner rush, so I waited an hour and got a seat on their staircase (has pillows on it) which was actually perfect. The restaurant was totally packed. We were first to arrive at this tiny resto for lunch at about 1215 but half and hour later it was full and buzzing with locals and tourists alike. The main focus is on fish but there is meat and a veggie option. It's also small plates but don't let that put you off. We had some ceviche of white fish, mackerel, scallops all washed down with a local white. Great service. Another proof that when you see a place in Lisbon that wants to be authentic but sophisticated, run away. First this place welcomes you with a sign asking you to stay outside. Then they only take cash. But worse you pay 15 euros for a small plate of pork cheeks which was ok but with no side. Ofc you leave the place still hungry. We were lured in by what looked like a lovely, cosy atmosphere in a typical local bar. We made an error we never normally make - we didn't scan for locals. There were none, there were only tourists, which is a huge red flag for us normally. To be fair, the waiter did give us some warning, saying that we would need about 2 plates each, which is strange for Portugal, and he was right. But at €15 per plate, you would expect phenomenal food for a serving size of roughly 25-30% of a normal serving. However, our food was fair, nothing more. In fact, the short ribs were bland, and the piri piri chicken's sauce was more of a sweet chili sauce. The couple sitting at the table next to us had similar feedback. Disappointing to say the least. My boyfriend and I had the best experience here. We ordered six dishes including our dessert which was incredible. We highly recommend the pork dish “secrets de Porco preto”. I recommend this place 100%. The staff was so kind, and explained everything so well. The food was very very worth it. The scallops, (vieiras) were to die for, cooked in a miso butter and accompanied with seaweed and bit of salt. Oh my god. The ceviche was very very good, with a rice crisp on top, but that was not too flavorful. The frango piri piri, (typical Portuguese chicken) was so tender and well seasoned. The chili sauce was a bit unnecessary and did not combine too well with the chicken, but fortunately it was on the side. We didn’t grab dessert but I’m sure they would have been good. As everyone has said there is a long wait for a table and they only take cash so get there early to put your name on the list. The person at the door offered me a cover ‘on the stairs’ which would mean I only had to wait 30 minutes. I have no complaints about the food it was beautiful and the cocktail was great. My main complaint and advice is do not accept the table on the stairs!!! Just wait longer for a proper table. Its opposite the toilet which people are of course in and out of and leaving the door open, it’s uncomfortable to eat at and it really just feels like you’re eating on the floor opposite the toilet. Sadly this really spoilt my experience which I had been looking forward to following much hype! The food and service here was excellent! Their attention to detail is admirable. One of the best restaurants I’ve been to on my trip to Portugal. The chicken was so juicy and full of flavour. The fish was perfectly salty and crispy! The local port wine that the server recommended was also really good! It was some sort of white wine made with green grapes - very refreshing and smooth. Thoroughly enjoyed our meal here! Waited over 30 minutes for a table (arrived at 2:30) but we were happy to do so. Staff were fantastic and the waitress who explained the menu to us (which I believe changes quite often?) was super passionate about it and made everything sound so delicious 😂 unfortunately we had limited cash and weren’t that hungry so it wasn’t the right time to sample everything. The scallops were AMAZING and we also loved the green beans. Tried the pig head for something different and it was pretty good but not our favourite - the stewed pork was great but the fried batter didn’t seem quite necessary. Would love to come back! We had a great dining experience at Taberna, which came highly recommended by a few friends. We arrived at 5:15 PM and were seated immediately without any wait. The establishment is currently operating on a 'cash only' basis, which was made clear right at the entrance. A bit of a heads up for those who are used to carrying just plastic. While I enjoyed the Bacalhau a Bras, I found some pieces of the fish excessively salty, which did disrupt the flavor balance. Additionally, a minor yet notable point, the plate served was not preheated. This meant that the food cooled down quicker than one might prefer, taking away from the otherwise enjoyable dish. Be prepared to get on their waitlist for dinner, but the wait is guaranteed worth it. They accept cash payment only - not to worry as there is ATM nearby. Their service for such a small restaurant is rather top notch. The staff explained the menu in English with such details and would answer any queries. We tried to get a table on the first night we arrived in lisbon. Failed. The next day we were determined, went in early around 7pm and got on their waiting list for 8:30pm. Got a table around 8:50pm. Unfortunately… it IS worth the hype. Have been on two seperate visits to Lisbon and both times did not disappoint. Granted you have to be there at 5PM to put your name down for a table but grab a beer from the park across the road and the wait is well worth it. First off, its cash only and no reservations. Get beyond that, come when they open for lunch or dinner and be ready to be wow’ed by some wonderful local Portuguese food! Everything was fresh, local, and so so flavorful. Definitely recommend coming to try this place out. The menu changes daily depending on what’s available and yes it comes on a chalkboard in Portuguese but the staff were wonderful in translating to English at the table when explaining the menu. My last meal in Lisbon. Bf suggested we try this place as it was popular and in the touristy area we were planning to visit. Theres no reservations and its CASH ONLY. I repeat. CASH ONLY. We arrived shortly after they opened for lunch and followed the instructions outside the door—-basically wait there until they acknowledge us. Realized why when we finally made it in….the place is tiny. I could whisper into my neighbor’s ear if I wanted to. You can’t possibly have people constantly poking their heads in the door with all the diners right there. Heck, even the toilet was right in the dining area separated by a small door. We were introduced to the dishes via a small chalkboard+ English translation by one of the staff. Couldn’t read a thing on the board and google translate was useless…but we decided on the scallops, tuna, and mushroom dishes based on pictures. We were served some bread + olive oil + olives to snack on while we waited. Every single dish was spectacular. The “fries” did become slightly redundant because we had them in 2 dishes, but I’m glad they weren’t the typical “fries” but rather these crispy thin fried slivers. I think this was the best meal I had in Portugal. It’s a bunch of small plates priced around 10-15€. For four people, we order 8 dishes and a bottle of wine and I was so satisfied by the end. A delightful dining experience. The restaurant is first come first serve seating. We arrived around 6:20 p.m. and just missed the first seating. The hostess put our group of two on the list and instructed us to come back at 8:00 p.m. for the second seating. We were seated right at 8 p.m. After we were seated at our table, the wait staff brought us fresh bread with olive oil and olives. The wait staff described each of the daily menu items in detail and took our beverage order. I ordered wine by the glass and my husband ordered a non alcoholic beer ( Super Bock). We ordered the Shrimp Ceviche, Scallops with Miso Butter, Tomato Carpaccio and Pork ribs and arugula citrus salad. The flavors were perfect. The pace was great, they let us enjoy each dish before bringing the next. For dessert we enjoyed the chocolate mousse and a special Portuguese cake. I'm so glad we had this dining experience. I really wanted to love this place. It was recommended by a friend as their favorite restaurant in Lisbon. We arrived early and were in the first sitting. The bread was delicious but sadly that was the best part of our meal. The fish roe with egg dish was too salty for me to finish, the swordfish with watermelon was a strange gamble that did not pay off, the eggplant with rocket and goats cheese was underwhelming, and the pork dish was good but not great. What a disappointment! Perhaps we didn’t order their best dishes. We did ask the waiter for his recommendations, but he was not forthcoming, just said all the dishes were very different. So happy to get a place to this place. You really have to go at around 5.15pm if you want the first sitting at 6pm or be put on a list for the same night. I was told by a friend to come here and I am so glad we did!! We had an amazing dining experience here, we lined up 15 mins before opening and got a spot (it was a Tuesday night). The staff were really helpful and friendly and the food was incredible and I loved the gorgeous restaurant interior. Everything was a highlight, we ordered the scallops, Portuguese beef, prawn burger and mackerel tartare. I ordered cod fish cake which came with salad, and pot of cooked rice and beans. We also got homemade spicy paprika sauce which when mixed with rice and beans makes whole meal very very delicious 😋. This place works a little differently than a regula restaurant - they have specific 2h serving windows for which you have to sign up just before the place opens (so show up earlier). Inside you are given a choice of like 15 dishes or so, and the menu changes every once in a while. The staff recommends 3 dishes per person as they are not too big and they encourage sharing. Make sure to ask exactly what each dish is. I'm giving 4 stars for food not because it wasn't excellent or bad quality but because some of them didn't appeal to me so much (the udon noodles have too much of an overwhelming peanut sauce and the shrimp were very very messy to eat). One of the best restaurants in Lisbon! The plates are tapas style so you can try numerous different plates which help you get a taste of true yet eccentric Portuguese cuisine. Our waitress took the time to explain each item of the menu in which everything we ordered was to our liking (especially the razor clams). Arrived at 5:50 for 6pm dinner. First come first serve basis, should have arrived earlier. They seated whomever they could and took our names down to come back for 7:30. We arrived at 7:20 and waited until 7:45. Seated and skipped the bread and olives offering. Ordered clams with herbs, coriander squid, Shrimp piri piri and finished with fried zucchini flower. Clams were handled nicely, very little sand, slightly sweet with great brine and great balance between oil, acid and salt. Best clams in the city. Coriander squid is a whole cooked squid, cooked that’s to the perfect texture. Your teeth and stomach will thank you. Piri Piri shrimp, was split in half where you can see what a great product they have. The shrimp oil oozing out. Piri piri is not a punch to your face because you can still taste the sweetness in the shrimp but compliments it very well. Lastly, the zucchini flower is precut , battered fried. There’s still a nice crunch, dipped in a slightly spiced soy sauce. The soy sauce should be more citrus like a Ponzo or slightly lighter but can be adjusted by the amount of ‘dip’. The batter is coated nicely to every surface of the inner and outer flower. Worth at least one visit and a round of waiting. One of the best dinners we had in Lisboa! The space is cozy and intimate and doesn’t have many tables available so I suggest to get there 15-20 minutes before opening to secure a spot in the first round or put your name down on the waiting list for the following ones as it gets busy quite quickly. The staff is very friendly and we’ve been treated very nicely. The dishes are of a perfect size to share, we were quite hungry and ordered 5 of them, leaving the restaurant very full. Overrated. While the food is pretty good, the price point for received food is not good. 15 Euros for four tiny scallops is a lot. Considered one of the top culinary experiences in Lisbon albeit with the longest wait. Yes, we waited for 2hr 10min for a party of 4. Yes, you can leave and grab a drink at a nearby bar, although in that amount of time you’re likely to get hungry and have a pre-dinner before your dinner (we might or might not have done just that). Is it worth it? I think for the quality and creativity of food the hype is a bit too much. In Prado, for example, you can get just as delicious dishes with no wait, by reserving a spot. I also found some of the entires just OK. All in all, excellent time but a bit overrated and the wait time takes away from experience (although some will argue it’s part of the charm). Very cute but small establishment. No reservations. They open at 6pm, I got there around 5:45 pm and there was already a line of people waiting. One of the servers came out and started taking names and said to come back at 6pm. With that said I was able to get a table for Right when they opened. Started with some bread and olives which were offered by the server. I ordered the scallops and the fresh fish ceviche with coconut milk. Both dishes were really fresh with a well balance of flavors. I like that the restaurant is run by a female chef and most of the staff is female as well. I have learned the one big difference between the US and Portugal is when they bring starters to the table you will Be charged. Usually when they offer bread at the table in the states, it’s free of charge. Just a heads up. They also charge for water as well. I only mention this because I only had €31 and I ended up €1 short. This was so embarrassing when it was time to pay the bill. I told the server I would go to the apt I was staying at and bring the other € 1 back. Luckily my place was not that far away. When I came back she offered me a sour Cherry liquor. (Guess she didn’t think I would come back) anyway, thought that was really nice. A very cozy restaurant were bookings are not taken. Just walk in. I became very popular, so expect queuing to get a table if you go during peak hours. Opens at 12pm. We loved the entrees. We had camarao a Taberneiro and dadinhos de tapioca. Delicious. As a mains we had Cavola Alimada and Ponta da Rabada. We liked them but they weren't as spectacular as the entrees. ONLY CASH ACCEPTED It fits around 14 people in the main dining room and maybe around 8-10 inside. Staff is very professional and friendly. Wait outside, otherwise the staff will get upset. I never really leave reviews, but for this place I have to. This has become my favourite restaurant that I've ever been to in my life, I loved it so much I went back three times and even though I've returned home to Ireland I'm still dreaming about the scallops in miso butter. The staff are incredibly kind and patient, even when clearly at their busiest. As others have mentioned, it's cash only with no reservations so show up at the door an hour before you want to eat, then go get an amarguinha with ice and lemon from the Kiosk on the plaza nearby while you wait. You won't regret it (and if the scallops are still on the seasonal menu, you won't regret them either)! So Overrated!! So many other amazing tapas places than this place! It’s expensive and nothing special. Their razor clams were utterly disappointing. For 14 euros they didn’t taste like much, it was under seasoned and the dish lacked imagination. Their fried sardines were good but you can pretty much eat them all over Portugal. The beef was also under seasoned and it was tough. However, i loved the combination of sunflower seeds, pine nuts, onions compote in the dish. I ordered a leek soup, and tempura green beans as appetizer and followed with a veggie pasta ( traditionally it’s made with meat as I was informed). Everything was super yummy unfortunately I didn’t have enough cash otherwise would have ordered two soups. The portions of the main course was rather big for me so I would suggest 2-3 small dishes and share a main dish between two people. Great little restaurant with a real cosy homemade vibe. Menu is interesting and Portuguese with a twist, some dishes mixing in Japanese flavours too like enoki, and even having an okonomiyaki on the menu (which changes frequently and on a white board). Staff are helpful and will translate anything on the menus for you. All dishes are meant for sharing and we had 4 dishes between us and were full. Salt cod with shredded potato was probably the best dish we had, and mackerel tartare was tasty and fresh. Very good value for money as dinner only cost c.€55 for two of us (though no alcohol). Would recommend, but I don’t think and of the dishes were really standout enough for this to get 5 stars ultimately. When high expectations do not meet the reality... If you want to have most expensive and most disappointing meal in Lisbon, come here. We were told that it’s a very local place with good portions of typical Lisboa cuisine. Well, maybe a few years ago it was the case. Now it’s a super touristic place which is very overrated. Where do I start? - Tiny portions. So tiny that to get full you need to order at least 2 dishes per person. IMPORTANT to note, that the price of a tiny portion is the same as the price of a big good portion in any other local Lisbon restaurant. So you end up paying TWICE as much as you would elsewhere. - Really weird menu. They say it changes every day according to the availability of locally sourced ingredients. Guess we were really unlucky, because we came for some Lisboa taste and left with burning mouthed from all the Asian dishes there were on that day. - a super long wait. You have to come to the restaurant, sign up for the wait list and wait 1-2 hours elsewhere, depending on the time of the day. Shall I say that it’s totally not worth the wait? This is a special place. The kind that you wish and hope and pray that you stumble upon when you travel. Where the wine list is local, local meaning not just Portugal, but only around Lisbon. The food is internationally informed in the way that it is familiar but still refreshing. It’s a small spot but so full of warmth you feel like you’ve stumbled into a place you been before. If you’re in Lisbon this is worth making a stop for, putting your name down, waiting for somewhere around 1-2 hours (grab a drink at by the wine nearby), and sit down to one of the best meals you’re going to get in Portugal. Fantastic dining experience in a small tavern- definitely recommend going there early as there is a long line and the tavern can only accommodate a few tables at once. The food is just amazing - plats are full of surprises experimenting with flavors and textures, using fresh ingredients that are in the season. I'm happy that people give up too soon and go to other places. It allowed me to enjoy an incredible meal in a great setting. I think the staff is on point with there interactions and provide excellent advise to customers. Definitely a tapas style restaurant but with a trace to origin method of producing great food. I thought each selection was perfectly prepared and the staff easily explained how they presented each dish. The atmosphere was small but comfortable. I had read enough about the waits here so we went early to put our name down and came back for an early-ish dinner at 7. It was tough deciding what to order because they don’t have a menu book - the server literally reads out the menu holding this giant one and only chalk board that exists at the restaurant. Anyways, we managed to order some dishes not really fully understanding what we ordered but each dish was delish and thorough enjoyable. I think each dish was low teens to low twenties in €. But they were not mind blowing. I can’t quite pinpoint or describe how each dish tasted like now. Additionally, a couple razor clams still had dirt. I’d also skip the dessert. While the chocolate torte? cake? that the server recommended was good, I’d much rather get pastel del nata from manteigaria for €1 not too far from the restaurant - they are THE BEST. The STAR of the dinner was actually the bottle of wine we ordered on our server’s recommendation. It was the best wine we both had in our visit to Portugal and that includes vineyards in the Douro valley! For €16, it was an amazing value in my book. Total dinner for two incl the aforementioned wine and a shared dessert I think came to €78 which put it at the high end of range for eating out in Portugal for us. I think it was an enjoyable experience but it’s not a must. We had read and heard about this restaurant so it was on our list. The food and service exceeded our expectations. We arrived at 6 pm and had a twenty minute wait. The menu was eclectic with a strong Portuguese foundation deliciously executed: oysters with seaweed and sea asparagus, fish with tomato and chips, fried small crab, grilled shrimp, mixed grilled vegetables, figs with goat cheese and finally a chocolate cake. A good selection of Portuguese wine all helped to make this the best meal we’ve had in Portugal and one of our top meals ever. Basically every other restaurant we went to in Portugal was a better experience than this one. I am not sure why all the fuss, for us it was very disappointing. First of all, we only managed to get in on the third try, and also after 1.5 hours waiting time. You cannot make reservations, so you have to go there, they put you on the list (if there is space left), and you have to return after at least 1h. Would not be a major problem if the food was exquisite. But it’s not. We had some fish which was somehow tasteless, the sauce took over completely. Grilled veggies were under-seasoned, and some black pork that again- was nothing special. I give it two stars because the drinks were okay, and the staff seemed kind, even if we were asked to leave as soon as we were done eating, because of the long queue outside. But I do think this place is overrated and overpriced, and there are many other better options out there. I tried to come for dinner one night and the wait was 2.5 hours. So I came the next day for lunch when they opened at 12. The meal is decent but it wasn’t anything SPECTACULAR. We ordered the fresh cheese - salty but good with the sauce. Then the fried calamari - it was missing a dipping sauce. They brought out a kimchi mayonnaise which was probably the best thing I had. One of the best meals we had in Lisbon. The staff were super helpful and lots of gluten free options. There is a wait but if you get your name on the list and go for a drink somewhere before heading back it is TOTALLY worth it. We went at 8.30pm on a Saturday and waited a little over an hour. The menu changes all the time as to utilize fresh and in season produce and they show it to you on chalk boards which is a lovely touch. We had black pork and a duck dish which is up there as one of the best things I have ever eaten. Great wine selection too, we had Nana 2015 which was 👌we bought a few bottles to take home. It was a miracle that we’ve got in this cute restaurant: we were the last who came, we were out of waiting list and there were a lot of people before us. The waiters were amazingly welcoming and made everything for us to feel comfortable. The lisbon house wine is quite good, all the extras were perfect, and all of our three dishes were amazing. Especially, the one with mini octopuses. Do NOT recommend for dinner. It seemed like the entire staff (front and back) had given up and we received forgetful, lackluster service and overdone, unappetizing dishes. We waited for over 1.5 hours (at BytheWine down the street, which ended up being the most pleasant part of our night). I’m okay with waiting if the food’s worth it. All 3 of our dishes sucked. Fish dish overpowered by Sriracha, plus chewy sea kelp + chewy fish skin was texturally unpleasant. Bacon-wrapped scallops severely overdone resulting in jerky-like bacon and mushy scallops. And again the unnecessary Sriracha. The recommend pork dish was exceedingly bland. Ironically it could have benefited from Sriracha. Waiter forgot the bottle of wine he recommended. Had to ask for it after our fish showed up and still waited another 10 minutes before we had to flag another server. Overall, this was one of my worst meals in recent memory. Maybe it was a bad night? I wanted to like this place. It checked all of my hipster boxes. And it started strong with good cocktails and great artisanal bread. We got there early and got seats pretty quickly. Heard lots of good reviews so was expecting nothing short of amazing. We were quite disappointed. We got the tuna tartare, shrimps, and duck. All 3 dishes were somewhat resembling Asian flavors, pretty sure this was intended. Because of that, I have to critique it harder. The tartare taste was bland and the duck was trying too hard with multiple flavors from the crispy skin to the kimchi styled radish. We did enjoy the shrimp which was soft and tender. 4 years ago we had read an article in the New York Times about this fabulous restaurant. Not easy to maintain such a high quality over the years, especially during a pandemic. It's a tiny place with lots of charm and great food. This was the first place I ever ate in Portugal and therefore it holds a special place in my heart. Loved the raw oyster and everything else. We stopped here in the middle of summer, so it was hot as hell inside and outside. It's located in the heart of the city. Again, it is super tiny, so don't go if you are a large group and I guarantee there is a wait for most people that stop here! Well worth the wait (1-2 hours) to dine at this traditional and exciting Portuguese restaurant. The daily menu is read off the board where we tried the aged oyster, traditional cod risotto, deep fried zucchini flowers (sorry about the photo we couldn't resist eating them when they arrived!), spicy pork bao buns and a cheesecake to finish (again, demolished before we thought to take a photo!). We were recommended a wine which was perfect and the bill came to €60 and we were very well fed. Lisbon has so much great food, but this was the best meal we had in our short time there. The soft-shell crab bao was amazing, as were the scallops. Charming service too. Be prepared to queue unless you come late or early (and you'll probably still queue!). ByTheWine down the street is great for a drink while you wait. First and best culinary experience so far in Lisbon. We went there for lunch and come back for dinner because the meal was so tasty. The restaurant is cosy and convivial, the menu changes several times so we can add more meal on the way and every single meal is full of flavour. Great food and friendly service. It's very popular and does not take reservations, you need to come and queue around 18:00 to get a table. I visited four years ago and wrote "Nice food in a comfortable atmosphere." I'll write a little more today. The room is narrow, but pleasant and simple. Menu and wine lists are all on chalkboards. The efficient staff explains today's dishes. I let them guide me to a shellfish appetizer, ceviche-like main course, baked goat cheese on figs in a port wine sauce, and chocolate cake. They also suggested wine, port and a really tasty sour cherry liquor to drink along with the courses. I had not planned to eat so much, but everything was so good, I could not help myself. Apart from not being able to book and the place is so popular we waited 55 min- we really enjoyed the food. The bread was good & dense - real bread not white fluff with no nutritional value. The olives were also tasty & I gathered pickled on site. We had the chickpea & spinach soup which was smooth texturally but beautiful green chard through it- just flavoured enough- then the fresh cheese which was balanced by the picant sauce- I had the steak which was tender & home made chips with just enough skin left on them- we tried the vegetable pasta which was Al dente & the spiced orange cake with a local Port like wine & coffee to end- everything was well cooked & tasty- I will return.
