  We dined here tonight 3/4/23. Was a great experience! We had the octopus and the beef in coffee sauce. Wow. The octopus was great, but that coffee sauce was amazing, never had anything like it. Portions are smaller, not American sized. Get an appetizer. Get dessert. For two tonight with a bottle of wine, an app, and 2 desserts was about $110. Worth it. I would go again.   The restaurant has been there 99 years! The roasted cod & sliced potatoes were outstanding (waiter said it’s their specialty). We took his recommendation on a bottle of wine & it was great, too.   The food is not bad, tasty but simple. We tried mostly meat dishes which turned out to be quite heavy. Cannot say the same about the service. While the food came quick to the table, we had a bottle of wine that was put in an ice bucket behind our table. We couldn't pour the wine ourselves, nor see if left any in the bottle at the end. At the end of the dinner, we had to wait for 30 minutes for the bill, and ask for it 3 times before getting it, when we just wanted to leave. Thankfully before leaving we checked the bill and realized that they charged us an extra bottle of wine that we never ordered. Overall the conclusion of the experience made the whole dinner much worse, with the wait and the wrong total. The food was quite good but not worth what we paid. Customers who came in after us (obviously Portuguese) were greeted and given menu and water. Waiter comes to our table hands us a menu and walks off. He then came back and just stood in front is with pen and pad no greeting No anything. When I inquired what’s the deal he was surprised. We then left as he tried to convince us to stay.   A disappointing experience: first it took them the longest time to find my reservation, and I had to explain to three persons that I actually had an officially booked reservation. Finally they found it, somewhere in their scribblings. But the waiter only hesitantly gave me a table, as I had dared to reserve for only one person. The whole evening the waiter kept that attitude.   Wow. We found this place for lunch more by accident. The service was very personal and utterly charming. We had the green been tempura (a speciality if Portugal) and shared a dish of cod.   We ended up coming to As Velhas thanks to a recommendation from a wine tasting earlier in the day, and I'm so thankful we did — it was an amazing experience! Our waiter was Antonio, though both servers were extremely attentive and friendly. They made our last night in Lisbon a really special one. The food was incredible — we started with the clams to share and then had the monkfish and beef, and everything was delicious and came sizzling straight from the kitchen.   One star for the Octopus. Kudos to the cook for his skills, this is not an easy feat. - 1 star: Getting in; the owner's first words were for the staff member and she asked him if we had a reservation. When confirmed we did not even get a welcome. Good start. - 1 star: Out of 5 dishes served on the menu, 2 were available (the "best ones" old excuse). We were told what to eat by a friendly staff member. All done in a quick and effective manner. Not a second spared. - 1 star: Bread 2euros / Olives 2euros / Butter 2euros. What we thought was just a little pre-starter snack wasn't so generous after all. - 1 star: When paying the bill the nice staff member just quickly imposed a 10% / 15% / 20% bill upgrade. A great magician trick. This is unfortunately not the traditional Portuguese restaurant we were expecting (it might have been way back then) but rather a good tourist trap nowadays. Food is ok (The Octopus was great and the Cod wasn't too bad). The atmosphere is not great. I guess it might have been better with "As Velhas" back then. Don't be fooled. We came here because of several recommendations from friends and family, in particular from my uncle Paulo Lomba, and we are so happy we did!   My friends and I went to dinner last night at this lovely restaurant and I can not speak more highly of the food quality and warm service. We were a large group of 8 adults and 2 children. The starters were delicious served promptly and our wine glasses were never emptied. The mains which stood out the most were the coffee steak, cod, and melt in your mouth octopus! The children also had fresh soup made a few hours before dinner and amazingly fresh fish and fries and everyone was so kind to them especially the owner :) Also highly recommend the chocolate tart, absolutely delish!   We were referred to this restaurant by our Viking guide Isabela. Great referral! We were staying at the Tivoli on Av da Liberdade so it was just a short walk. The food was excellent without exception. My wife and I both got the duck the first night and grilled octopus the second. Both superb. Our waiter, Antonio, was helpful and very friendly. Make a reservation because it fills up fast. Unfortunately it's closed on Sunday otherwise we would have been there three nights. The restaurant next door is NOT an acceptable alternative. Try the ‘arroz de gambas e tamboril’ and also the ‘bife do lombo à ‘marrare’. No where in town can compare to these two dishes.   I visited tonight for dinner and I found it a very pleasant place. The best element was the friendly and professional service. The food is very good and I enjoyed it. The reason for not giving a higher score, and be aware of it if you go, is the trick to serve you (just as soon as you sit at the table) bread, olives and butter... which you will then see included in the bill.   Our favourite place for home style food. The marisco (seafood rice) was the best we had in in Lisbon (by far the best in the whole city because we tried like 4 places and this reminded us of home!!!) The male waiters have their own roles so don't feel excluded when they don't address you. The lady host was amazing, calm, caring and attentive.   Probably the best dish I've ever had other then tasting the dish my partner was eating at the same place (and I refuse to normally eat octopus). An authentic and delicious experience.   If you are looking for a delicious, traditional Portuguese dinner look no further. This place was hands down our favorite meal during our trip. Service is professional and friendly. The owner came around twice to check on us and our waiter was full of excellent recommendations. The atmosphere is slightly upscale but the dress is casual. We arrived with reservations on a Monday night (but not needed since we dined at 1900). Olives dressed in fresh parsley and garlic and bread were already on the table. The olives (€1.50) were delightful. We passed on the bread to save room and were not charged for them. Entrees are a bit pricey for the area but the portions are huge! Everything was cooked to perfection and well-seasoning. We preferred the pork and clams over the cod but both were delicious. If you are light eaters I recommend sharing a meal. The wine list is well curated with lots of local wine. We order a wonderful Vinho Verde (€18) to wash everything down with. Make sure you save room for some Port and homemade desserts.   Portugese food is known to be excellent but in this restaurant is something else! There are plenty of options in the menu, the staff is really friendly and speak good English.   To be honest, I was a bit thrown off by this place as we were greeted by a brightly lit room and no staff, but we quickly warmed up to it. It's all about family style delicious food, and an excellent wine list - even the house wines were delicious.   Excellent food, even better service. Very hospitable and warm! We ordered the steak and sea bass and they were both terrific.   I chose to come to this place on my last night because of the reviews. I came here alone on a friday night. Lets start with the positives - the interior is nice, love the dessert cart, and the wine recommendation was great (the half bottle i ordered ran out so they gave me another one). The staff is excellent. Attentive to your needs, asked for feedback for every dish, and all have a smile on their faces despite the busy work environment. Given that the restaurant was full (friday night) they were pretty busy. I waited 20 mins after my main dish for someone to clean it up and for me to ask for dessert. The free Ginjanha (cherry shot) at the end was a nice touch. The downsides- the food was pretty mediocre, especially for the price. The shrimp was ok - the sauce didnt quite permeate into the shrimp although the garlic oil was delicious. The most expensive dish was the cut of veal, which i ordered - and that was a huge disappointment. I asked for medium rare, and the meat was well done. It was unseasoned, and so asked for salt. The iberico on top was too thick and hard to chew, and I spit out most of it and didnt eat the other half. Overall the food was mediocre. I had much more delicious food for much better prices. Maybe i had high expectations - thought i was in for a treat. How unfortunate. Two stars because the most important thing about a restaurant is the food - and the food was mediocre and bad for the price. A Ginjanha grátis (dose de cereja) no final foi um belo toque. As desvantagens - a comida era bastante medíocre, especialmente pelo preço. O camarão estava ok - o molho não penetrou no camarão, embora o óleo de alho estivesse delicioso. O prato mais caro foi o corte de vitela, que pedi - e isso foi uma grande desilusão. Pedi mal passado e a carne estava bem passada. Não estava temperado e por isso pediu sal. O ibérico por cima era muito grosso e difícil de mastigar, cuspi a maior parte e não comi a outra metade. No geral, a comida era medíocre. Eu tinha comida muito mais deliciosa por preços muito melhores. Talvez eu tivesse grandes expectativas - pensei que seria uma surpresa. Que pena. Duas estrelas porque o mais importante num restaurante é a comida - e a comida era medíocre e má para o preço.

  We had a great meal at As Velhas. It was recommended by the concierge at our hotel. It did not seem like a tourist restaurant but somewhere the locals visit. Our waiter was very patient explaining the various menu items so that we could make good choices. He was not the last bit impatient. I appreciate that he recommended a great bottle of wine that was very inexpensive. We had the seafood rice. Very delicious. This was one of our best meals in Portugal.   What a find! You'll probably eat cheaper in Lisbon, but the food is delicious. Atmosphere is laid back and the staff are very helpful and friendly.   Went for dinner here last night and it was delicious. I had the grilled sea bass and it was superb. No kids menu but they gladly put together a simple meal for my daughter, which she devoured.   This is a great restaurant. It is well situated (close to Avenida metro) and the dining room is very comfortable and atmospheric. I particularly like the English 19th century Vanity Fair caricatures that line some of the walls. It helps the atmosphere that the tables are generously spaced. I really appreciated that when at booking we agreed a particular time but they said, "The table is yours, come when your are ready". There's absolutely no pressure to finish the meal so they can get another few covers. The food was the best we ate in our 10 days in Portugal. A well balanced menu and helpful advice on both food and wine. My only regret was that we didn't have time for a repeat visit. Do go if you get a chance.   What a gem of a restaurant, we went there 4 times during a recent visit to Lisbon for my birthday! Guadaloupe, Paulo and Joaquim went to so much trouble to ensure we enjoyed our meals there. The atmosphere is welcoming, tables aren't squashed together so everyone has enough space, service was prompt without being rushed and the table is yours for as long as you want it. The food is best described as Portuguese home cooking; every dish we had from starters through mains to deserts was absolutely delicious with portion sizes big enough for hungry people without being overwhelming. And the bill is incredibly reasonable. I know of few places in the UK where you can enjoy food of this quality at a similar price. We will definitely go back for when we next visit Lisbon.   One of our best meals. The food and service are exceptional. Guadeloupe, the family part owner, was extremely accommodating and gracious throughout our meal. She and the waiter guided us to order the perfect meal and wine for us and were tremendous hosts. The food was perfect. The seabass in olive oil and garlic was some of the best I've had. The fried sardines very tasty. Cod was great and chocolate cake and lemon meringue pie amazing. Topped it all off with some local cherry liquor. Price for two was extremely reasonable at 70 euros.
