  Very satisfied with the experience I had at Santelmo. Thanks to all the team and especially Ina who recommended me the octopus, the speciality of the house ! I really can say that it's the best octopus I have ever tasted ! Also, the team is very international, so it's very easy to communicate, in english, portuguese, and even in russian ;) I recommend this restaurant !   Stumbled on this place on our first night in Lisbon and was honestly one of the nicest meals and experiences we had on the trip. The starters we had (prawns and the beef chuck) were so delicious and the mains were excellent. The octopus was cooked well, had a lot of flavour and was a solid portion! Would definitely recommend to anyone travelling to the city, especially if you’re looking for local food done well.   Been here a few years ago and was excellent, sadly this experience was nowhere near it. My bacalhau a bras was room temperature and a lot smaller portion than the last time (2021.) Full of bones and not a lot of codfish. Accompanying salad was also a little stingy in comparison to Portuguese standards. My girlfriend’s Robalo was also tiny tiny, cooked well, but just small. 2 small potatoes accompanied it, and the pile of veg was equally petit. With the vast amount of amazing restaurants on offer in Lisbon, I won’t be returning to this one. Especially sad as it’s round the corner from Madragoa where we’ve lived for 3 years (Traduzido pelo Google) Estive aqui há alguns anos e foi excelente, infelizmente essa experiência não chegou nem perto disso.   We came in for dinner and got the shrimp, grilled octopus, lamb stew, side salad, and lime tart. All of the dishes were delicious: the shrimp was very flavorful, the octopus was crispy and well salted, the lamb was tender and paired very well the sweet potato it was served with. Finally, the lime tart was my favorite part of the meal, it had a great sour taste with a little bit of bitterness, while also having a light texture and not feeling overly rich. The service was also great, fixing our wobbling table immediately. The complimentary cheeseboard they sent us was also delicious.   🌟 Tao's Google Restaurant Reviews 🌟 This was the last restaurant that I had in Lisbon and thank God that I did not miss this because it ended up being my favorite one in Lisbon. We ended up having the grilled cod fish, cod fish cake, grilled octopus, and tuna steak. I recommend all of these choices to be honest, as they were all so good and so delicious. Huge recommendation goes out to the octopus, which is possibly the best octopus that I have had in all of Portugal. It was extremely chewy and soft and the flavoring was absolutely right. The bacalhau was made very well, the grilled version being very soft and tender and the cod fish cake version being nice, creamy, and savory. Tuna steak, I would recommend eating it raw. My parents had wanted it cooked to a medium rare which was okay but you lose some of the flavoring with it. The service was very good as well. We were able to fit in without a reservation and our server was extremely kind and also gave us some bread on the house as appetizers. We had a very enjoyable time with my family and I highly recommend coming to this place with family, friends, or dates.   Our favourite dining experience so far in our month long travels throughout Spain and Portugal. The lamb stew was a beautiful rustic dish which was full of the most wonderful flavours and meat falling apart. The salmon was fresh and flaky with delicious sides.   The best octopus I have ever had! The service is great, and all the food was incredibly tasty, but the octopus was something else - seasoned absolutely perfectly and so soft it melts in your mouth. There was also a complimentary cheeseboard with a lot of different things on it, it was fun to try everything. We also had white wine (you can try it before deciding to order), prawns (phenomenal) and mussels (also really good).   We got there a little early for dinner service so there's no wait. We were offered a complimentary cheeseboard with tuna pate to start our night. Then our starters shrimp with garlic and mussels arrive. We also had a Bras style codfish as our main. Food was unmistakable. Please try their cocktail too as it was so refreshing after a day of walking under the sun. On top of it the service from the crew was top notch.   WOW. This place is absolutely worth the 5 stars on yelp. We have been in Portugal for a week , road tripping the coast, and this has been by far our favorite restaurant. The owner took his time in explaining each dish and giving us his recommendations. We had the prawns (a must have & we almost ordered a second), beef tips, octopus, beef cheeks, and lime tart were all outstanding. We will be back.   Rather good service. That's it. The food is mediocre or simply unpalatable. My dish was just once touched by me (it was disgusting), but it didn't touch the waiter, who included this in final bill. I am a big fan of codfish. But it was the first time in my life that I couldn't eat it. At the back side of the restaurant is a door leading to a small, cramped yard. And you can be sitted there.   We found the food super salty. We had the cod and the pork cheeks and they were barely edible. The potato chips were so so… They had no more vinho verde and the only white wine they had was the most expensive. Food took a long time to come out. The only thing we liked was the bread and cheese as appetizer. The place looks nice at first but there are a bunch of tiny details that are off. It may have been a cultural difference thing, but she came across abrasive and not warm at all. The other waiter was very polite with a great attitude but limited understanding of English.   It was the second time i dine in the place. First time was few weeks ago only and I thought the place is great. This time was extremely disappointing from the first moment. The lady that received us was aggressive and loud, she even shouted at one of the waiters when he approached our table. The other waiters were extremely polite and gave good advise. We had Octopus, which was below average, soaking in oil, and burnt in some places while under cooked in other places, and was definitely too dry. We also had medium rare steak, which came too much undercooked and did not taste great. We simply did not finish the plates and left once we finished our wine. Firs time I dined here i thought it is worth the 4.8 reviews, but this time i think it is so much overrated, one of the least impressive dining experiences I had in Lisbon so far. They didn't charge for the couvert of cheese, sausage, bread, butter which I would have cheerfully paid 10€ for as it was almost a starter in itself and nicely presented.   I had the sausage starter - it was very big and incredibly salty. It was very nice - I just wish it came with something. Just a big sausage. For main, steak. Was cooked to perfection. I don’t know if it was because of the starter, but I was again quickly overwhelmed by salt. My wife had prawn starter, and octopus main. Again both dishes were a bit sparse with accompaniments.   One of our favourite restaurants in Lisbon. Usually we go for the pork cheeks (in the background of the picture) as they are cooked exactly I like them…soft and succulent. But this time I went for the classic Portuguese beef bitoque (essentially steak and chips). How Santelmo does it more upmarket than a classic tasca. The complimentary cheese board for starters is a fabulous touch. We love coming here and will continue to do so. Highly recommended.   I went there last Monday and had a bad experience. I guess one of the waiters had called in sick, as there was only one waiter for the entire restaurant and he seemed stressed and angry, which was projected onto us. When we were given the complimentary cheese platter, he plonked it down and walked off without saying a word. I thought he had made a mistake and given us someone else’s starter. Luckily my partner had seen a review which said it was complimentary so we ate them. After, I noticed everyone else he gave this cheese to, he said to them kindly “a gift from the house” or something, which annoyed me that he didn’t give us this service and we were left to guess. Not to be put off by bad service, I was expecting big things from the food after reading the reviews, but was sorely disappointed. I ordered pork and clams, which was chewy, dry and tasteless pieces of pork and some clams, on a bed of French fries with a little watery sauce on the bottom. I was surprised how flavourless it was. It was one of the most average meals I’ve had in Lisbon in 2 months here. I think I must have been very unlucky, as I know I’m the anomaly with this bad review, so don’t let this put you off. But for me, it was a bad experience. Maybe I should have ordered seafood, maybe I should have picked a day when the waiter wasn't being miserable. Hopefully you'll have a better experience!   Me and my partner were on the look out for a specific restaurant in the area and when we got there the queue was around the block and the menu didn’t have on the day what we both really wanted to have, octopus. So we gave it a miss and wandered around trying to find another place to eat and that’s when we went to Santelmo.   Could not recommend this place more! The atmosphere at Santelmo is really cosy, and the waiters were very friendly. After we ordered, the waitress brought out a complimentary cheese board, which was absolutely fantastic. For our mains, we ordered the grilled octopus and the iberian pork with clams. Both were delicious. The whole meal was very reasonably priced, and we also had a bottle of wine. I will definitely visit this restaurant again if I come back to Lisbon. The only thing that makes an inconvenient is that they do not accept credit cards only local debit cards which makes not very handy for paying.   Excellent. What an incredible meal. Very popular, make sure you have a reservation. We got lucky and got a table by the door, but the queue outside soon formed and many people were turned away. My partner had 'the best salmon I've ever tasted' and I enjoyed a beautifully cooked steak.   We came by early (around 6:40) and they were already open. They let us choose our table and were very friendly the whole night. Food was great and they have two vegetarian options.   We booked a 7:30 dinner reservation and were glad we did as the line formed outside by 7:45 for this small, intimate restaurant. We received a friendly welcome and helpful input on our wine selection and food choices. There is no charge for the welcome bread and olives (and more...). The food is well prepared and nicely plated. We enjoyed the grilled octopus (try it, so tender) and the cod with cream and spinach. Too full for dessert. We would definitely return on a future visit to Lisbon.   One of the best places I have ever had food in Lisbon! Some vital information may be to book a table in advance if you are certain of eating here, we arrived half an hour before opening to book a table, however it may get busy quick as there were many people waiting for a table when we left. Firstly before I get to the food, the service was excellent, English is spoken well and smiles all round made it a very comfortable environment to eat in. The prices of food were lower than expected and perfectly reasonable. The food was absolutely divine especially the tuna and octopus. The complimentary cheese, meat and bread was delicious and a nice surprise.   We felt very fortunate to have stumbled upon this place. The roasted octopus and clams with port were both amazing. They had a good selection of wine. All of this for very reasonable prices.   Our favourite restaurant on our visit to Lisbon! Such a wonderful hidden gem. Beautiful little place, amazing service and completely delicious food. The complimentary cheese board to start was a lovely welcome! We enjoyed the Octopus (show stopping dish!) and Iberian Pork - sooo delicious and perfectly cooked. Panacota & Lemon meringue pie for dessert to finish off, were just beautiful. Tried a couple of lovely wines by the glass too - both excellent. All extremely reasonably priced.   What an absolute gem that we accidentally stumbled into. We were in the area looking for some octopus but when we went to a nearby restaurant it was fully booked and they couldn't take anymore customers. Searching for a replacement, we saw Santelmo with a full 5 star review so that peaked our interest. As it was only a short way from where we were, we walked over to see if we could get a table. The good: - Extremely friendly staff that spoke great english . - Menu items had all the local favorites including Octopus and Cod - Reasonable pricing with mains ranging between 12 to 18 euros - They brought our a bread basket but also a cheese board that was complimentary. - Great craft beer and wine. The bad: - The place is rather small and it seems to be getting really popular. I would get a reservation if you plan to visit or you can gamble like we did and show up right as they open.   Amazing dinner! We had the grilled octopus and codfish cream with spinach, as well as a bottle of the house wine and dessert. All less than 25 euro each! We did not have a reservation so we were told to come back in 40 mins and they were able to accommodate. As it got later we did see lots of people turned away as tables were reserved, so make sure to make a reservation! The staff were so kind and the restaurant itself is beautiful.   No working contact number listed....anywhere...so when traffic held us up for 15 minutes, I could not alert the restaurant. We waited 1.5 hours for our food after ordering. Yes. 1.5 hours. I requested an explanation, and the waiter offered up that there was a mix up on the kitchen. I had to ask twice before any significant action was taken. Even then, the food was brought out one plate at a time over a 10 minute period. Luckily, the food was on par for our expectation. The waiter, after acknowledging the mistake, did not attend to us with any special courtesy beside offering a single, free dessert. Honestly, I didnt even want it. I liked the main dish, but in the opinion of a former restuarant general manager and customer success professional, the staff needs training in customer service.   The best meal we've had in Portugal by far! We were served with complimentary cheese board with olives and bread to start. Our mains of roasted octopus and beef cheek were beautifully cooked, very tender and flavoursome. We have never tasted octopus so good before. We finished with a lemon meringue pie which had perfectly formed peaks of chewy meringue, zesty lemon curd and crumbly biscuit base. To end we were offered 2 complimentary port digestifs. The staffs were very polite and always smiling. The venue was was warm and tastefully decorated with a little courtyard to wait in if all tables are taken.   Absolutely superb food and helpful service. We had the Dorado and Sea bass. Both were absolutely perfect and we would highly recommend this. The meal began with complementary bread, cheese, and prosciutto. Many restaurants charge extra for this but here it was included. The perfectly grilled fish came with vegetables and roasted new potatoes. I believe the total bill was only about €30 for two people including wine for some of the best food I've ever had. However, they only accept Portuguese cards or cash which meant my husband had to go and look for an ATM machine while I had more wine 😊 the secretos (pork dish) was amazing.
