  A satisfactory experience overall. The main reason why I am writing this review is to make you aware that they charge €10 / person for a Fado show without making it obvious. They invite you in, bring the menu, but they do not mention about this charge at all. However, it is written at the bottom on the last page of the menu. Rather sneaky if you were to ask me. I travel and want to experience local culture, but they will charge you extra for listening to live music on top of your bill without letting you know before hand.   CHEATERS! I wanted to put 5 stars first before I got a bill. The singers and show was awesome BUT. They hay 2 menus -1st they show you at the beginning and second at the end when you wonder why your bill is so high. The price difference is about 40%!! Also they charge you extra for the show even guy in the enterance said there is no charge. C'mon people, you have great show and singing, good food and service, but why do you want to lie and cheat your guests?   We had a really lovely and special night here. The place is small and they made room for us. The fado music was excellent with talented musicians and singers. We had bread, olives, cheese and cold meet followed by pork for my partner and octopus for me. The octopus is some of the best I've had and was perfectly cooked and a generous portion. The pork was slow cooked and delicious. We followed it with pear in red wine and I had a port. We also had a glass of red wine each and it came to €110.   Overall experience was good until we had to pay the bill and we realized they charged us for the entries they brought to the table (unrequested) we thought it was a courtesy, an entry fee ( which is excessive in my opinion, considering the fact that the place was not full.) Also, they charged us 5€ for the “singing show” which is pretty much the owner singing music in Portuguese. When you go here , if you decide to do it after reading this, make sure you don’t take the entries if you don’t want them and eat outside to avoid the “show” or at least ask them upfront about those fees to see if you can wave them .   2 hours wait for food which gave food poisoning. Not the best start to our 5 days in Portugal. The waiter was very welcoming and was able to seat 5 of us outside which was very kind. Menu looked great and we were excited to be in Lisbon and eat some fantastic seafood. After waiting for nearly 2 hours we finally received half the food and shortly after the other mains came out. Really disappointing, my salmon was dry and my fathers cod was undercooked. When we’d finished we did complain as the food was not up to standard. The restaurant then proceeded to tell me that I should have let them know “how I wanted my fish cooked” - I would expect any restaurant to not serve, bad or dry fish. We were the told they had a full capacity inside and only 1 chef which would explain the food delay. Note to the restaurant - explain this before people sit down to eat, we may have changed our mind. My father than was up all night with food poisoning and missed the whole next day from being bed bound. There are some fantastic restaurants in Lisbon, this is unfortunately not one of them. After they had finished the fado and we finished our drinks we were going to go before we were told to stay because someone else now wanted to sing, so we did and it was incredible. We were the only ones left so it was literally just for us. Only cost €30 for the drinks and fado for three people (bring cash for a tip though if you want to), would definitely recommend and come back, perfect last night in Lisbon.   It was our first night in Lisbon, we started walking around to look for places to eat. We were invited in to Taverna de Ray by a friendly young employee at the door who offered us a menu to look at. We decided to give it a try and were so glad we did! The waiter (Bruno) was so helpful. Making recommendations when we asked about typical Portuguese food and drink. We tried the white port and another delicious pre dinner small drink. The cabbage soup was savory and good temperature. My husband and I shared the rice with seafood. Think of it like the portugués version of paella. The portion was big so we got to take our leftovers with us! My sister got the traditional cod with garlic and potatoes which was also very good. For dessert we tried the pear in red wine and all of us were so impressed with it. Finished up with some sour cherry liquer. For the other important part of the restaurant the service and entertainment. Bruno our server was very attentive and spot on with every recommendation.   We were just walking down the street when we heard fado inside. The waiter told us the show has just started and if we'd like to go, there is a 5 euro fee/person. We had just some drinks with no pressure to buy food or to have a minimum order. And the fado show was really nice, actually we were impressed (lots of goosebumbs :D). There were around 12 people inside, probably some are avoiding the place due to its bad rating on Google. But if you'd like to hear a good traditional music with no crowd around and with a very small entrance fee, this is the place. A garçonete foi educada, mas um pouco impaciente e não nos sentimos bem-vindos, então 4/10 Vinho 5/10; o vinho era bom, mas quando comparado a outros restaurantes em Lisboa era ruim (estou comparando o vinho da mesma faixa de preço). Geral: 6/10 Eu me sinto mal pelas coisas que funcionam lá, porque você pode sentir um ambiente tóxico enquanto está lá. Pena que o rastaurante tem um grande potencial.

  Terrible experience. This restaurant is a tourist trap. Before we enter, we asked if they charge an extra fee for the music and they said no. But when the bill came we saw that they put an extra 50 for music, extra 10 for couvert and also 30 for starters we did not order at all. And when we were just about to leave, having paid the overly priced bill, they didn't see the money on the table and run after us screaming and shouting that we didn't pay.   We hate leaving a 2 star review on such a beautiful and intimate place with fantastic service, great food, and quite possibly the best experience we will have on this trip. However…. When someone is intentionally scamming customers, (see the hundreds of reviews below) and continues to do so, I have zero sympathy for them. What I do feel bad for are the incredible employees that are being degraded by these actions. The music was truly fantastic. The server provided the best service we have had since we arrived in Portugal and compliments to the chef for the delicious meals we got to enjoy this evening. We are very happy to pay for such experiences but not when items are intentionally added and/or double charged on the bill as if it would go unnoticed. I would rather there be a line item about the cost of entry, cost of the music or a way to leave a tip for the cast but that didn’t exist. When we politely pointed out that our bill was incorrect, our server was extremely helpful but the owner seemed to get very upset about us contesting it. Be mindful of your bill before paying but do go for the fantastic food and experience.   It's a trap. They lure you in from the street. They dont have a menu posted and you dont see it until you are seated. No cell service to check out the reviews once you are seated. It was WAY over-priced. 30 euro for a single jumbo shrimp cut in half and served with plain white rice. Wine was also overpriced compared to everywhere else we dined in Lisbon. The Fado singers also waited tables which took away from the experience. The place was small but they packed people in like sardines. 5 out of 6 of our party could not exit without having someone else move.   We had a lovely time we just had a drink and enjoyed the show as we spotted it whilst walking past. They were all very passionate about the music and put on a wonderful performance. I think the other reviews are unfair there were two musicians on guitar and two main singers plus another who joined in for a bit. So charging extra for a performance with multiple musicians seems fair enough.   Worst dinner ever. Honestly I do not recall situation that I had to leave more than half of my meal on the plate. It was completely disgusting food. What is more, they are charging for the starters that you have not even ordered (we were aware things like this in Lisboa) and extra for service! You pay for live music as well.   We came for the Fado and had a great time! We went by on a Wednesday (they’re open every night) and weren’t sure what to expect as we walked in after dinner and were one of the only tables. Nonetheless, the owner assured us they would perform with however many people were there. We were absolutely blown away by the performance. It was delivered with such passion and warmth. The owner was incredibly kind and joined in for part of the performance. There was a €6 charge for the show, which we didn’t realize at first, but it was well worth it. Would definitely come back!   We loved the place. Just stumbled upon it. Brought our daughters here. Food was fantastic. Fado very passionate. Owner was super nice, serving us, greeting us, and then sung too. All the musicians were older and very experienced. You could tell they’ve been playing all their lives. Lovely place for an experience I’ll never forget.   The WORST experience in Lisbon!!! Don't go there if you care about your health and money! Firstly the food was very VERY bad! After the dinner we had a stomachache... How is it even possible to cook the cod (a national dish) sooo bad? The quality is very low. The music was nice. But we were invited to listen a fado and the musicians started to play spanish songs for a while... The prices are exaggerated! Especially for the terrible quality!   I do not understand the many bad reviews of this place. The plates and the wine were excellent. The music was 10 euros. The food price was not cheap but not too high for the excellent quality.   They did not informed us that the music would be payed separately. All the surrounding restaurants had this cost included. In fact, all of them communicated properly about all the relevant information. In our case, this extra cost was 5 euros each person. In others, up to 25 (reported by other Google references). Incredibly, the only place in Portugal that demmands 2,5 euros for one cafe. Furthermore, the receipt was written by hand and was not really explained. Again, when asked, they tried not to answer. As the final act of this theater, I was told that a glass of rum would cost 7,5 euros. When paid, it cost 10. I claimed that I explicitly asked about the price. The waitress helped me to get back the difference and an unacceptable reprimand was given to this worker (when in fact he asked the price to their superiors). Finally I am really sorry that we did not read before TripAdvisor or Google references. We really hope that no one would ever suffer these unpolitly behavior we have witnessed. If you think the appetizers brought to your table are complimentary, that just means you don't know anything about eating out in Portugal. This is not a place to go for two beers. It's a concert venue for a very traditional Fado performance, with maybe the best acoustics of any place in Lisbon.   Great music and service. We went looking for Fado and came across this restaurant. The Port the staff selected for us was very good and the food was delicious. Other reviews list this as very expensive, but I felt everything was honestly displayed and that the price was a match for the experience. I enjoyed the music very much even without understanding Portuguese. They do offer CDs and pictures and other add-ons but are not pushy.   I don’t tend to leave reviews especially negative ones, but I felt I had to let people know what they’re getting into. Total Ripoff - do not go there! We were recommended this place by a ‘friendly taxi driver’ who told us the locals go there. Absolute tourist trap - place was almost empty when we went in which should have given us a heads up but we took taxi driver’s recommendation in good faith. We paid €70 for two dishes, one gin&tonic, & a sparkling water. The prawn dish was over €22 for 2 prawns and a bit of salad!! Still hungry when we left! We were brought bread, cheese, olives & cold meat which we didn’t order- luckily I asked if this was free. It wasn’t - the meat was about 10€, bread & cheese & olives roughly about another 6-8€. So if we had eaten that we would have been charged for these items that we thought were complimentary. We were also charged for the music which we thought was free. Wouldn’t give even one star if I had the choice.   Hopeless, utterly hopeless! I NEVER leave bad reviews, never! If an experience is good then I’ll leave a positive review because I want to see good businesses prosper. I’m not vindictive enough however to wish failure on anyone. That said, last night’s experience was comical at best! It was recommended by our tuk tuk driver then we met a tout for the restaurant who spoke great English and assured us it was very good. Now, the music actually was very good! I’ll give them that! The service though, shocking. We ordered three cokes, all flat! Our starters of bread rolls, butter, olives arrived, fine. Two hours later and we still had not had our meals, it’s now getting on for 23:30! After asking how much longer dinner might take, we were given no apology, no explanation and continued to wait for a further twenty mins! Eventually I went up to the bar, paid for the 3 flat cokes and the bread and olives (€37) then left! It was shocking! Avoid avoid avoid!   Definitely not worth recommending. Food was ugly and it is not a matter of personal taste. It simply wasn't fresh. Music and singers in my opinion gave quite a performance but unfortunately no information about additional paiment for it (10 euros per person which is written with small letters in the end of menu) leaves you speachless.   Don't go there! A man came to see us on the street in order to take us to the restaurant. They don't tell you that they charge 10€ more for the music (which isn't that good, the singers don't sing great). They even try to add some euros to your total check. This place is a complete scam!   DON'T go here if you value your money. The music is fine: guitar play was good, Fado singing was fun (though the lady singer didn't have her night when we were there) but they overcharge you for just about everything. And add extra items to your cheque (so check your cheque). In the end, they also charge you 10 Euro's per person -extra- for the music. Because that was in the fine print of the menu. We didn't appreciate that. Especially because the guy who talked us into going to the Taverna specifically said the music was free. We were charged 75 Euro's for 2 drinks and two plates (5 per drink (tonic/0% beer), 20+25 for ok dishes (beef and lamb), 20 for the music. In a random other Taverna in Lisbon that would have cost 30 Euro's or even less (excluding the Fado). (Traduzido pelo Google) NÃO vá aqui se você valoriza seu dinheiro.   DO NOT GO HERE They are just as much of a scam as everyone says they are. Went for an after dinner drink and Fado, says 10€ per person as you come in, no problem, spent that on wine. When the bill came it was 40€! After I complained and tried for an explanation, they had their little play probably how they do for everyone. Another person comes over and points out the extra fine print that says 10€ per person for just the music! To top it off, one of the owners or friends or someone they knew was sitting behind us talking the whole time so we couldn't really enjoy it. This place deserves every bad review it gets. The musicians we actually good, but it doesn't make up for the way they scam the cover charge and are very deceiving. If I could give no stars I would. We got charged for things that we didn't ask for & elsewhere performance is included in the price. Service was normal but bill was too much and was not been given itemised receipt and was handed a hand written scribble.   What a shame i haven't read those reviews before. Everything what is written by others is true. Expensive place, rude waiters and they do put things in your final receipt that you did not order. Even though the music was good the whole experience does not worth to go there. There are plenty of other places to listen to Fado. Avoid it!!!
