Good place to hear Fado. Quite a small, intimate place, fills up quickly. One singer seemed somewhat stern, but was quite friendly when I chanced to run into him. The singers and musicians were top notch, I thought, though this was my first experience with live Fado music. In particular, I thought the "lead" guitarist was very accomplished, but all the musicians were very good. The sangria was very tasty, refreshing, and reasonably priced. The food, mostly tapas, though inexpensive, was just OK. The cod pastries were my favorite. The smoked ham sandwich was stringy and not very flavorful. The breaded chicken was similar to chicken tenders, but I'm not sure how much one can expect from this dish. The server was not very friendly (maybe having a bad night)? Service was slow, but the place was quite crowded and I only saw the one server. I arrived just before their posted opening time to find a line outside the door, but we were seated soon after they opened. I would come here again if/when in town again. I almost thought I'll not get to see a performance as I was very late entering the Barrio. But then the doors shut, the light was turned off, a small red light goes on, and the Fado performance begins. Her voice was magical. I read some of the reviews about the poor food options. Indeed, but why would you come here for the food? You come here for the amazing authentic Fado in this cult establishment. Tourist Trap! An unbelievably awful evening on my last night in Portugal. 😢After waiting in line for 2 hours I finally got in and ordered a beer, only to be told cash only. So I asked for the nearest ATM and was followed by their doorman! Seriously! He seemed completely unashamed to be following me, like I had borrowed money from the mafia for my beer. In the meantime leaving the 50 people in line with nobody letting them in! You can’t make this stuff up. When the first ATM didn’t work he followed me to the next one and stood there behind me. It was so creepy! I followed him back to the club because he scared me, but at that point had little interest in going back in. Did anyone really even sing? All I saw was 5 minutes of tuning (which really should be done off stage) then 2 songs and a break. What a wasteful, unprofessional and scary night! Don’t choose this place for Fado no matter who says what on Google. We had the best and most memorable time at Tasca do Chico. The food was good, the drinks were cold, the hospitality warm and the music was beautiful! We arrived at 645, stood in line for 30mins till they opened the doors, were sat promptly, waited a bit for our orders to be received and delivered and for the music to start. If you have no patience then don’t bother but if you are in for a true Portugal experience get there early, wait in line and be patient. You won’t regret it! Arrived (my partner and I) at 6:45 and had to queue for 30 minutes to get in. The venue is cool and the music (when it's on) is very good but the food is not great so don't go there expecting to eat dinner. If I were to go again I would just get drinks and a snack to cover the 10 euro minimum spend. While I enjoyed the place I would not queue for an hour, which is what people who didn't get in initially had to do. My friend and I waited in line for about one hour and 20 minutes and unfortunately, I didn’t think it was worth it. The atmosphere and the music are great, but I don’t think it justifies the wait. We were recommended to visit this wonderful place. We wanted real "Fado" and were in ecstasy from the whole experience. The small but cosy / intimate venue was perfect for what was about to give us such joy. The owner/ lead Fado singer, was superb. We knew nothing much about Fado, even less Portuguese but once welcomed, fed and introduced to this magical music, we were hooked. A young woman sat on our table who was also a beautiful singer. She explained about the musical tradition and history of Fado. The years of training and passion required. We entered at 7pm and left at 1am, with crowds still trying to get into this paradise of music. The musicians were excellent, complementing the varied singers who came in as if spontaneously to, what we later found out, was one of the best "Fado" venues in Lisbon. !!Come here for an honest review!! Every negative review you’ve read is true BUT these represent the patronage that do not belong here. They believe they are the main character and any inconvenience to them is a worthless establishment (we all know who I’m talking about). I arrived at 8:10 and I was not able to enter until 9:40. However, I knew that this was a popular establishment and I knew I entered at a very popular time so I was understanding of the wait. However we encountered people in line that would’ve thought this voluntary wait was sentencing them to the gallows. I 100% understand why people have said negative things about the doorman. Because people were so rude to him! I would be rude back to people too! Once we got inside, service was difficult because it was a small dive bar. Just raise your hand- and they will come to you! But no, they won’t dote on you. We stayed for about an hour and experienced goosebump worthy fado. The low lighting, new friends, authenticity, homey feel, and melodic songs were well worth everything to me. If this all doesn’t sound worth it to you, then don’t come, and don’t waste a worthless bad review! My advice? Arrive early (before 8), adjust your expectations, have a sip of wine, close your eyes, don’t leave until after one of the female singers performs, soak in the beauty, and enjoy- this is not a place for negativity. Seeing great reviews we went in, still low expectations cause the staff is outside guiding you in. Beer is pretty expensive paying €5 for half a litre, quite expensive in Bairro Alto. Still acceptable don't get me wrong. Chorizo was tasty, bread a little dry/spongey. We ordered pork which was full of tendons and still had hairs on the skin! They made seabreem taste bland, which is quite an incredible job. Would not recommend this place. Perhaps the worst experience at a restaurant in the past couple of years. We waited 1 hour to get in (which is fine) but the wait was not worth it. We were made to stand in a corner whilst some below average Fado was played. The waitress was extremely rude and shushed everyone without prior intimation that silence is expected. Perhaps the worst customer service I've experienced. She is arrogant and has a bad attitude. Our experience with customer service in every other place in Portugal has been the opposite of this place. The flaming sausage was so over salted it made us all feel sick. We were offered a table after we ate the sausages at the bar counter however we declined and went elsewhere. They open at 7 but you have to queue for about 20 minutes until they let you in. Space inside is very narrow so you have to sit down next to people you don't know at the same table. My friend (a girl) and I were sitting at one of the tables at this bar for an hour or so - eating, drinking and enjoying Fado music. Since the table was for 4 people, the owner or the manager brought an old couple to our table to share it. All good with that (since we were previously sharing it with a Spanish couple that just left)- but the old man sitting right next to us started harassing us and saying all the worst things to us in Portuguese and ordering us to leave the moment he sat down. They joined our table, and HE asked US to just leave and kept saying all possible curse words to us. I called the owner/manager and told him that he was harassing us- and he did nothing- just stared at us while that old man kept cursing us and ordering us to leave in front of the manager as well. So that’s what we did as he wasn’t stopping (his wife was clearly embarrassed (didn’t say a word) and they weren’t drunk or anything). I used to come here many times but won’t anymore- the place allows old white men harass young ladies. Horrible experience! I would say the tapas were nothing more than fried stuff with bread. Very much overpriced. You will also be seated next to random people as it get very crowded. Horrible experience: treated very badly, no space, expensive, not real fado (I'm Portuguese). We were very rudely told to get in, after waiting for a while outside. As soon as we got in, they closed the door because the show was about to start. We realised the place was packed, with nowhere to sit or stand. We had to stand on the side of the counter, in the way of the waiters, that were getting really upset because we were interfering with their work. I kept on being bumped into, and told to move several times (with nowhere else to go), while I had a pilar between me and the singer (so I couldn't see anything, but was somehow almost on top of them). Before the show started, we were given the menu by the singer and very rudely told to pick something (once again, we barely had any place to stand). If there wasn't a place to watch the show, they should've said so. The whole way they addressed us was incredibly rude. I don't think I've ever been treated like this. It was a place that was clearly made for tourists, and the Fado was not really traditional. I wouldn't recommend this place, unless they do some serious management changes (it had the potential to be great, if it wasn't for this). We went to the place in front of it, where the Fado was amazing (chilling even), and the food and atmosphere was very nice! We came to have dinner and listen to fado at this place. The host outside invited us to have dinner and told us there is no minimum spend, we can order what we want and listen to Fado. We ordered fish of the day, it was not the best cooked, fish was literally swimming in olive oil. I asked for a glass of water and waiter came with 4 bottles of bottled water ( each bottle 3 euro and we were 4, 12 euro total for small bottles of water, I don’t find it logical to pay this much for water, when it’s 50cents in supermarket). I refused to take water, and since that moment waiter became very rude and told me I can’t have glass of water and started removing all glasses from our table. We were listening to Fado while waiting for our order, the Fado singers were incredible, the only thing that saves this restaurant. When we got our food on the table, waiters started moving the table right behind us in pretty small room, talking very loudly and walking around with plates and table clothes, so it turned from dinner with Fado to dinner on construction site. We didn’t even finish our dinner when waiter started walking around and taking our plates, to make us leave and set the table for new $ to come. A great experience in the heart of Alfama. This place was recommended by a Canadian couple that we met at the Fado Museum further down the road. Small place and very busy. Must book in advance and arrive before 8.0 pm when they open in order to secure a table. Beautiful atmosphere, food and drinks were reasonably priced and the Fado music clinched the night for us. If you're an American and have ever been to a blues club, this is the place to go for similar vibes. Small and intimate, the experience we had here will be a highlight for many years to come. The tapas and drinks were delicious and the Fado was exceptional. Seeing the passion the musicians had for their craft was wonderful. Let loose and in between performances make sure to chat with the people sitting around you. We stayed for three rounds of performances and then left so that others could get a chance to see some of the magic. I had a fantastic experience at this place for Fado. Met some great people from England, Italy, Brazil, Spain and Portugal. Mixed experience to listen to FADO. We got there at just before 8:00 p.m. with the doors opening at 7:00 p.m. We ended up waiting for 45 minutes to get in to stand then for another 30 minutes or so to finally sit down. The music began around 8:30 p.m. The owner or manager, an older man, was a little grumpy and short with people. He only spoke to Portuguese so it became a little challenging to understand. The two ladies who were working hard in the kitchen and bar work. Interactive and it made it a little bit challenging to order food and drinks. However, the food was pretty good and inexpensive along with the drinks. The music was about as expected with only three different singers and four sets of 3 songs from 10 to 15 minutes each. The owner opens up the door after each set for people to leave but you cannot come in from the line unless someone leaves. I don't understand why all this fuss about this place? I was suggested going there in order to listen to some fado music. I am a musician as well, but it felt too touristic for me. The concept was to squeeze as many people as possible inside, turning off the lights to create some spiritual atmosphere, but it felt like the musicians or the singer weren't appreciated in the way that they should. It felt like people only went inside, ate and left. For me, musicians and music should be respected and not sacrificed in the name of tourism and money. The most authentic experience we had in Lisbon. We had flamed sausage and house red wine, both were great. Two other people were seated next to us, which othervise would feel strange, however here really made the whole experience even better. Fado was lovely. There were three different people singing. The atmosphere was intimate and amazing. Be sure to make a reservation at 7 pm and come back at 8 pm. Music started at around 8:40 pm. As for the stuff and negative stuff reviews seen here, there are not far from truth. Waitress indeed showed no interest in serving us properly, but we did not let this affect our evening at all. One of the craziest/worst dining experiences of my life. I read other reviews just to see if I’m crazy but the other bad reviews sound eerily similar to ours. Super nice door man (seems like the owner) but the server girl literally acted like she was bothered we were in the restaurant. We got menus but no one came to take our order. We asked and one server just said “ok” but no one came. We were there for at least 25 minutes and I kept thinking “I want to like this place but why are the girls working here in such a bad mood?” After seeing them look at my wife and and I and never come take an order (not even drinks) we got up and left. It was our last night of vacation and by far worst treatment / service we experienced in Portugal. Especially considering how amazing and hospitable the rest of Portuguese are. An entire experience! Super recommend for anyone traveling to Portugal and wanting an authentic experience. You have to arrive at 7 on the dot (there may be a small line!) and leave your name. Then you return at 800 to start ordering and then 8:30/8:45 for the Fado! I recommend arriving before 8:00 though so you get a seat in the front of the restaurant. A few people recommended me this restaurant as the best place to listen to some live Fado. My experience was very disappointing. The place it's tiny. If you get a table close to the kitchen it smells like oil. We ordered some tapas and they were kind of overpriced and not so tasty. The sangría tasted like if they had just mixed some sugary drink with red wine and threw a couple of orange and lime slices there. We though that it didn't matter that much because we had gone for the Fado, not for the food or drinks, but sadly the show wasn't anything really special. Maybe this is the place to come if you're a Fado expert, maybe they have the best artists in Lisbon, but to my tourist untrained ear it sounded like any other singer. I actually enjoyed it better in another restaurant later on the same week, maybe because the food, drinks and place were better. So I wouldn't go here, not really worth all the extra disappointments. The owner is super friendly and nice but the staff (2 women) and one of them, the younger one, is super rude and shows you how annoyed she is,-she also thinks she is the owner of the place or something (LOL!!!) and acts also like that, which is super funny (poor girl!). When the show is over she screams through the whole bar that is finished for today and everyone has to leave now (even at 1:50! and the bar is closing at 2am!). My advice to the owner: get rid of that girl! I've read other entries and everyone is complaining about the same thing; even when I was at your place 2x in a row. But the place is super beautiful! This was about the equivalent of waiting in a line for a rock concert, only to find you ended up at a high school voice recital. The line isn’t too bad— we got there at 8:30pm and waited about 30 minutes outside. After the set finishes, everyone in the bar area rushes out and the people in line are ushered into their former bar space. It is a really small place and you need to wait in the queue to get it. They let us in after more than 20 minutes in the queue and only allowed us to have a drink at a bar. When we arrived there was a short wait as someone was singing, some of the people waiting didn't understand we couldn't walk in at this time, and the guy at the door didn't explain. Yes. Every night. You can queue outside if you don't have a reservation. The fado artists take a 10 min break every 4 to 5 songs and some people come out at that time so they let more people in. A lot of people come out around 10pm or so. The first night, although there was a large queue outside, we managed to get in after 2 breaks but only got standing room at the bar. An amazing little bar in the heart of Lisbon. The staff is friendly and helpful.It is so cozy and intimate. It has locals performing fado almost every night. Super packed, stood for the first performance and got a seat on the second. Really cosy bar, where the music fills the space. Despite other reviews, I’d say about 3/4 of the place consisted of tourists (like myself), or at least tonight it did. There was a line for the whole time that we were there, for entry. Tip: avoid getting the sangria, which came out of a plastic bottle from the supermarket and tasted disgusting. Haven’t been to watch Fado at any other places so can’t compare, but would recommend seeing a performance while you’re in Lisbon, this is certainly somewhere to start. We found the staff unfriendly. We were 4 and wanted to share 3 dishes because we weren't too hungry, but the waitress insisted that we order a dish per person. That's fine, we understood, they had to pay the musicians. But the food was really average and in the end we weren't able to finish it. We liked the music.
