  Was so excited to try this place but with one worker and virtually no service, we waited in a line for over an hour in the rain. Everyone in line was frustrated by the lack of service or help in ordering…and it was evident that they need more than one person working there. There’s great chicken all over the world, so would not recommend you waste your time here.   People are unnecessarily hard on this place. In reality it's a solid choice with well-priced drinks and available tables even on a weekend evening. Some of the appetizers we tried weren't that good but hey it's a touristy place, you don't come here for amazing dinners.   Never been in Portugal before but a Fado dinner was recommended. So glad we picked this place. They make you feel right at home from the moment you book reservations.   We were a group of six looking for fado and came by this spot by chance. Warmly greeted and served by the charming Carina and Diego. I had a Caipirinha (one of the best I’ve ever had) and the prawns and pasta stew. Very flavourful. Everyone in our party enjoyed their dinner and we were delighted by the fado singers Dina and Paula. Unfortunately I got food poisoning from the cod dish I ordered here so a word of warning for other customers that food storage and preparation of food may not be hygienic. Within a few hours of eating dinner here I was already feeling nauseous and symptoms worsened. The dish I ordered was also dripping with oil.   The ambience is good and they were really insistent in vying the customers to try the place out considering they were right opposite the famous “Tasca do Chico”. Their selling point we have good Fado music and there is no minimum spend. But the moment you enter the restaurant you are treated rudely if you don’t make a huge order right away. As soon as you are seated you are expected to make the order and the waiters keep asking you to make the order. On top of that they are rude and only tend to focus on getting the maximum out of each table rather than giving the customers a good time which is a complete irony. I would not recommend this place if you want to enjoy fado music without the pressure to spend a lot.   I've been in this restaurant twice - first time I had an amazing dinner with traditional Portuguese dish and fado. But this time I've got very upset with them. First of all, noone noticed my presence at tge table for 10 minutes and I had to call the attention of waiter. Secondly, the dish I had last time and wanted to repeat doesn't exist in menu anymore. Ok, I've chosen another one, but this time (again after another 10 minutes) waiter said that It's overed at kitchen. Then I decided to leave the restaurant, since there is nothing interesting left for me at menu. So I paid for my drink and left. Then I've got into the most ridiculous situation ever. Waiter was running after me to get the bottle of coke back. The bottle I already paid for! This is not normal! Conclusion: This place is not worth to visit anymore.   The food I tried was not the best, super oily and kinda no flavor / tasteless. But I think it's subjective. The point I didn't like was actually about Fado singers. I respect the tradition and kinda listened carefully, but the artists wouldn't play or would get you "the look" if you're gonna even speak a little with your friends during the Fado. It kinda makes you leave the place because of the awkward position that the singers would put you in. Also the staff doesn't know English very well, you may get along or not, hit or miss. Also it was an incident that at some point a bug was crawling up on the wall towards the sweets corner.   My food was amazing, one of the best fish plates I ever had (Bacalhau à bras). Great Sangria as well. My other companions were dissapointed by the food as it was very oily and without taste. What I did not like about the place was that it was pretty dirty (very cheap look and a bug was climbing the walls to the desserts). The staff does not speak English which is very unfortunate in a touristic area. The live Fado was nice however one of the singers gave the impression of a teacher.. she was making us feel uncomfortable for speaking with others from the table. Both my friends got their meals and I ended up just canceling my order and eating off my friends plates. Also ordered a Caipirinha which was not very good.   My friends and I went here because we wanted to hear some Fado music. We originally planned on going somewhere else, but that place didn’t have music. I was surprised when I looked later and saw all the terrible reviews! They must have read them and improved because we had a great experience! Unfortunately, we arrived a little late, so we only got to hear a few songs. They were out of some of the dishes (I wasn’t surprised because we were there that late). The drinks we got were quite big, and the food was delicious! The waitress was also very nice to us and patient with all our questions (especially mine when I wasn’t sure what to order)!   We originally went to the Tasco de Chico as It is my birthday, but their service towards us was not acceptable. (See my review on Tasco de Chico 10.12.19) The gentleman outside RETIRO saw how upset we were when we left Chico and referred us to try RETIRO DOS Santos, we explained we just wanted something light, we had a big lunch earlier. No minimum charge, we had the starters menu, simple soup, wine and beers, starters cheese and bread. When we arrived she was singing, we listened to Fado for Free and our waiter was really attentive and we felt Fado was sang beautifully by the 2 ladies. Look DO NOT expect MasterChef food here but our bill was correct when we paid. And you do not have to buy the CD's but the CD's do make a wonderful gift or to play at home to remind you of RETIRO.   It was my first Fado experience but I quite enjoyed it! We got to hear 4 songs during our dinner. I got the seafood Masada and it was so tasty! My sister got the pineapple turkey and it was so flavourful. Unsure why this place has gotten such poor reviews. I do echo that they didn’t have credit card choice available and we went to the cashier to pay our bill but we didn’t mind since we got our food quickly and was able to enjoy the performances.   We came here because the restaurant we wanted to go to across the street was full. However, the maitre d' beckoned us in with the promise of Fado. There was no minimum charge other than dinner, so we enjoyed a delicious meal and listened to two great singers. I had a tomato salad and the roast lamb, which was tender and delicious. My vegetarian husband was happy to have a bowl of vegetable soup and a mushroom and rice dish. We shared a bottle of wine, all for $56 euros. Because we stumbled upon this restaurant, we had not even looked up the reviews, so we were surprised to see such low ratings. Don't pay attention to the negative reviews. While I wouldn't choose this restaurant for the food only, combined with the fado music experience, it is a solid choice. The service was great and we'd return when in Lisbon! Even left some bread on the empty neighbour table when we ordered more. Ignored us when we asked for the bill. So slow and unpleasant.   Food was fine. The biggest minus is the service- one waiter attracts you inside and then does not care about you for the whole time- only checking his phone!!! Waiters are super slow, everything takes so much time even the restaurant was basically empty. The whole time we were there they did not bother to clean the table after people that left (that is why other people did not sit down and they lost customers).The chef passing by cleaned it.   Genuinely worst meal I've ever paid for. Convinced by charming man at the door but as soon as we entered it all went downhill - started by being ignored for 15 minutes followed by poor service. Food was served with cling film still in situ from where its been microwaved. Chips, rice, chicken and sausage all cold and taste the same. €3.50 for vegetables... aka half a brocoli floret, again, somehow overcooked beyond belief.   We read good reviews about "Tasca do Chico" (food & Fado), but it was all booked and had a lineup. This place was just across the street and looked decent, with just a few people inside, so we tried it before reading the reviews. Bad move. First, they gave us two appetizers "if you eat, you pay" (cod salad, beans & beacon, €7/each). We didn't. Took it from our table after 15min, and served it to another table. How long are these appetizers moving around!? We asked the waiter about some items on the menu, seems annoyed, unfriendly and cold. The restaurant wasn't even busy. Food is about €10/plate, and tastes as such. My wife didn't even finish her food. I ate mine, but it was blend and underseasoned. The traditional veggie soup with sausage, is literally one slice of sausage. The best part was the Fado, but unfortunately short. Two singers, two songs each, and then about a 45min break. They try to sell CDs after, but are not pushy. We got our desert when they came for the 2nd time, but we were given the bill with our desert. They don't accept credit cards, but luckily we had enough cash on us. The waiter kept looking at our table to pay the bill. We felt rushed out. Would not recommend this place.   Run away as fast as you can! Food is absolutely terrible and not even safe to eat - We all felt sick after having a lunch here. There's so many great restaurants in Bairro but sadly this one is the worst I've ever been to. Such a shame such place exist. I wonder how bad it must feel to be an owner of a restaurant which makes people literally throw up.   We were recommended this place by some friends saying it's a good place to listen to fado. We were quite worried about all the bad reviews that we had read, but decided to give it a go nontheless. Our waiter was an older man whom i can't exactly call rude but he wasn't the friendliest either. We asked him to help us order and sometimes we didn't really hear him or we needed a bit more time to decide and he looked a bit annoyed. However, the food was nice, but nothing to write home about. As for fado, we found the singers very talented, although we would have wished the singing lasted more time.   Sadly I agree with the majority of the reviews for this place. Our meal was not only very delayed, the meal (lamb) turned up so dry it was very hard to swallow. Potatoes were boiled, not roasted as stated in the menu, and the spinach was most definitely frozen from a bag - easy spot to spot if you’re any kind of cook. We’ve seen so many wonderful, fresh vegetables around Portugal, and we get frozen ones? Bizarre. Don’t eat here. Be warned. Absolutely terrible food, they force starters on you and sell overpriced drinks and let's not get started on the second rate fado which shouts in your ears making you half deaf. The food was absolutely trash, the steak I was presented with looked like someone scraped Gandhi's flip flop off of the bottom of the grill and coated it in some "mysterious" creamy substance. The chicken skewers were dried rubbers and the vegetarian sausage was coated in plastic and looked like they took it from the rear end of their pet dog.   Place was great, music was nice and the waiters were kind, just a little slow. Food was great, lamb was delicious and plentiful, the seabass special was fantastic and tasty. We were turned away from the place next door as we had no reservation, but this place was very accommodating and overall a great experience.   Food was terrible. The dishes were all badly cooked. Onions on the salad were old and smelly. The white wine tasted stale and was indrinkable. The small bottle of red wine for EUR 9 was very cheap and not tasty at all. The spinach with the vegetarian sausage was not spiced and very dry.   Nice at the front door, waited for 30 seconds but it was ok, but the funny part started when we took a table. Waiter brought snacks and said “if you will eat that you will pay if not not”. Then he said we MUST order main meal and can’t go without it, and they don’t accept cards, cash only. So we ended up with a lamb for $10 and 2 martini for $10, but before we wanted a cheese board+martini and it was $22 together, so waiter can’t count and doesn’t know the menu.   I passed here randomly, whist wandering around in Bairro Alto, drawn in by the prix fixe lunch menu. The place was 80% empty. I have to say it was undoubtedly the worst meal I've had in Portugal so far during my holiday here. I ordered the baked cod, and it was just an atrocity. Nice presentation but no flavour. The outside was so hard and crispy, it could not be chewed. The inside had a flaky texture but no flavour at all. Texture was ok, but it tasted like nothing. The potatoes that came with it were equally bland. The desert pudding was fine, but I would never pay the a la carte 4 Euro price for pudding that tested like it came from a plastic cup in the grocery store. I'm increasing the rating from 1/5 to 2/5 because the waiter was very helpful in describing the menu items, and they have very nice, modern, clean washrooms.   Horrible. The food was awful, really expansive for what it is, supermarket wine (at best) sold as one of the most expensive wine on the menu. At the end, they gave us a wrong check with food we didn't order. After we said it, they made another check, this time a little less, but with a 21 euros dish we hadn't ordered. The Fado starts at 7 but if you can get there earlier for appetizers you will be treated to some of the nicest people you will ever meet...seriously...and then the beautiful fado music starts, and your meal arrives and...wow, what a treat! The Octopus was unlike any I've ever had. Apparently a 3 hour prep...certainly instant delicious! My wife reluctantly agreed to try the lamb because she never cared for lamb before this.   Food good and I went there for the Fado mainly - excellent experience BUT I don't like the idea that there was only one option of white wine by the glass - and this was from boxed wine. Not impressed and it shouldn't be acceptable from a restaurant anywhere in Lisbon and thats why it loses a star.   Great and tasty food, awesome and friendly staff. I ordered steak and it was the best I have ever eaten. Fun evening with great Portuguese Fado music.
