  Awful experience. Ordered a steak and it was literally raw. Sent it back and got pretty much the same thing served again. We also ordered a basket of bread and was charged twice for it, when asked why they said it was because we were two people, so 8 euros for 3 pieces of bread.   This place is a classic and everything was great. From the very old school waiter that opened the door with a clever face control to the one of a kind working the first floor, the wood paneled decoration, elegant seating, and background jazz music just transported you to another time.   If zero was an option, that's the rating I would give. I really do not get what people like in this restaurant. This restaurant left much to be desired, starting with the service. Despite having a reservation, upon arrival, we were made to wait standing for 10 minutes, even though there were available tables. The service in general was disappointing. The man that served us, while friendly and kind, could not speak English so it was impossible for us to communicate, he could not understand what we wanted. However, the worst thing is that we ordered a steak WELL-DONE (the waiter knew this word because he used it first) and the steak he brought us was raw, almost alive. Upon requesting it to be cooked further, the second attempt, as captured in the attached picture, still fell short We paid 30 euros for a disappointing steak that went uneaten. The French fries were another disappointment. Even in the realm of fast food, one would expect better quality. It was evident that they were pre-fried. Ao solicitar que fosse cozinhado ainda mais, a segunda tentativa, conforme capturada na foto em anexo, ainda falhou. Pagamos 30 euros por um bife decepcionante que não foi comido. As batatas fritas foram outra decepção. Mesmo no ramo de fast food, seria de esperar melhor qualidade. Era evidente que eles estavam pré-fritos. Um simples pedido de desculpas ou gesto de boa vontade teria sido apreciado. Nunca mais iria lá novamente.

  This is a amazing restaurant. Out of town. In a lovely area. You ring the bell to enter, staff are well dressed & so friendly. It's like stepping back in time. It's cozy the decor is lovely. We both had there signature dish which was the steak in sauce with a egg on top. It was fantastic, the steak melted in your mouth the sauce so tasty it came with some lovely thin chips. Then a cake afterwards. It was a birthday treat for me, as we are normally on a budget. Enjoyed the whole experience and it will be one that I remember of Lisbon.   If I could give more than 5 stars rating to this place, trust me, I would with pleasure. The ambience was cozy and welcoming. The place sits mby 30 parties and makes the whole experience unique. The traditional steak we simply put an homage to my taste buds. Every bite was just heavenly. Before that we had the couvert and that butter was dreamy. For dessert we tried the Portuguese variation of creme brûlée and the lemon zest twist made it worth trying something almost every country has as a dessert. Overall, A MUST IN LISBON.   Made a reservation for one. They sat me at the only table in the middle of the room. It was very uncomfortable and felt like I was on display to all other diners given the position of that table as the sole table not touching a wall, just in center. I asked to change to a different table as there were multiple open 2-tops. They refused, saying it was busy today. Questionable. I watched as couples came in after and were seated along the side. Second, they didn’t tell me about the lunch menu or give me the option until I asked (it’s a much better deal at 25 euro for a steak and starter or dessert). Once I asked, they gave a menu. I noticed for the other patrons, they automatically gave them the option. These two days points of different treatment really made my experience unpleasant here. While food was good, I didn’t feel comfortable or welcome. Other than service, food was decent. The traditional steak was good but different. Gradient steak with a crust is my preference and this one was soft and cooked medium rare with skill, but just different - smothered in the cream sauce.   It was a little disappointed about food and service. Tiny restaurant but waiters are not very attentive, so we need to be patient to order the food. Stake was good but cream sauce was a little bit too vinegary. Creamed spinach was not authentic style. Price is higher than other steak house but food quality was not matched. We won’t go back again.   Ring the Bell! Yes, this is EXACTLY what we did to get admitted on Oct 9, 2023 …my last night visiting Portugal before flying off first thing tomorrow. Told my friends who brought me here, that I feel like going to meet the mafia :) I was told it’s hard to secure a reservation unless there’s some last minute cancellations. Viola ! You get transported into a time warp of the British era, complete with wooden furnishings and waiters formally dressed but certainly not opulent. I find the seating rather cramp and the acoustics poor. Well, when a restaurant boldly advertises herself to have the best steaks in town, how can one possibly skip the steak ? I went for a non-carbs O tradicional bife, served with spinach…. But I suspect their signature creamy sauce is calorie laden. It was probably unique because I rarely eat beef with creamy sauce.   Café de São Bento creates a feeling of old world exclusivity and luxury. The exterior of the restaurant is unassuming. Simply a well maintained building with a small awning. Knock on the door and a host opens, revealing a heavy red draped entryway that is pulled back to reveal another time in the center of Lisbon. The interior feels steeped in history and tradition. Every corner of the space has something beautiful and interesting to take in. It’s a small, intimate space. We started our meal with steak tartare, foie gras de pato, and couvert. Delicious! For our main courses, two of us had the bife a Português and two bife a café de São Bento. All steaks were a perfect medium rare and the sauces heavenly. We enjoyed the spinach, potatoes, and side salad as well. For dessert we had the leite creme, apple tart, and chocolate cake. Every plate was a delight for the senses! With 2-3 (?) bottles of wine, I think our total was ~350€. Notes: - Book ahead - The Bife a Português is hands down one of the best steaks in the city.   It's very difficult to find late night food options in Lisbon. Luckily we found this gem! The atmosphere feels like a private social club from back in the days! I think this is the best dinner I've had at 1AM in Europe! The prawns were divine, cooked to perfection. The carpaccio was a nice surprise! The star of the show- the chocolate cake. The layer of merengue added the glorious crunch which made it heavenly!!! The staff were so kind and great English! Perfect place to grab a bite right after the airport!   What a great experience. They made us feel very welcome as soon as we were let in the door (you ring a bell at the door and wait! :-)) There was a mix-up with my order (language barrier!) but it was super quickly resolved. The filet mignon was probably the best I’ve ever had with a delicious cream sauce. Really good value for money in our opinion!   The steaks were tender, traditional Portuguese style with special cream sauce or the steak cooked in olive oil and the slice of ham on top. Not too special but they both were good. The only down side ; the table was too small and low for the chair so it is not very comfortable. there are no windows on the first floor.   I ordered oysters here. Should have looked at the reviews first. They were not good, and one was green. I wonder how fresh they were. I didn’t eat two of them and hope I do not get sick from eating the rest. The wine was pretty good though, and they lady taking the orders was nice, even though other reviews say otherwise.   I havent eaten here but the lady that works here is insane!!! We were sitting behind the place when she started yelling to everyone to return her chairs. We havent taken her chairs but,they were already placed next to the wall for guests to sit, we were finishing our drinks and my husband gave her one. She came to me and started pushing me from the chair and told me she will call security beacuse i dont want to give her back.   It leaves up to its fame. I'm not sure whether it's the best steak in town, but definitely has to be my favourite so far in Lisbon. We visited it during lunch, so the executive menu is an absolute bargain for the quality you get. The wine is exceptionally good and so as the desserts. The staff, well, is what you'd expect from a classical lisboeta restaurant, flourishing to the tourist hordes that Lisbon now has: lack of empathy, and adapts the service quality to the ones who wave the money the highest.   This was our last dinner on a two week trip, and it was a great choice. The menu is pretty limited to steak (they have one vegetarian main dish and one cod main dish) but it was extremely delicious and perfectly cooked. Make sure you get the steak sauce!   I cannot comment on the quality of the food here, but the cashier is extremely rude. We have been queueing at the next stall during the lunch time on Sunday. The place was packed. We tried to form a line and leave some passage room for the people trying to pass. The above named cashier started to chase us away because there were literally three people a few meters away in from of their stall. When I commented that we stand like this to ensure passage of other people, some of which had baby strollers, the cashier became very rude. Said that we had to move and that the passage of other people is not her problem. When we refused to move because we would block other people, she threatened to call the security. The waiters are all adorable and helpful, you should make a reservation (easy to do from Google maps / the fork), and you should get the steaks - we actually liked sirloin > filet, and the apple tartin was my favorite dessert.   Special restaurant in Lisbon that has a classic, old-school menu and a matching interior. We were welcomed by three charming waiters with a lot of experience that strike the right balance between excellent service and casual conversation. Inside the restaurant, the seating is low and the atmosphere is so nostalgic/historic that it is cool again. They serve quality steaks prepared in classic Portugese styles. We shared a starter and a desert (the tarte tatin is highly recommended if you have some room). This was a bit too much in all honesty, but we couldn’t help ourselves as everything was excellent. Do expect to pay more than what you’re used to in your average Portugese restaurant in Lisbon - both for the food and the wine - but in our view, this is totally worth it.   HORRIBLE! 0 STARS IF IT WAS POSSIBLE!Amazing how bad of an overall experience we had. The food was appalling. We felt like we're going to puke immediately after leaving. The first stake was COMPLETELY RAW, the grilled stake was PALE, FLAVORLESS and unbelievably THOUGH and even the fries were not good. Honestly even 5€ would have been to much and we paid 30€ per Person for this ... The cherry on top ? The RUDE SERVICE! From the second he heard we were not going to order any expensive alcohol we were treated like the enemy. Anything that was brought or taken was done so rudely. On top of that the waiter messed up our order (of course still charging us the higher priced item ...) At this point we were done with this place just ate our sad fries ,to at least be a little full for 60€ , and left. It all ended with the waiter throwing the receipt at our feet while we were leaving. We have never received service this bad even the cheapest place would treat u better...   A little charming place and described as one of the best steak in Lisbon. We are impressed by the starter including prawn in garlic sauce and smoked salmon. The steak actually is average and not the best I ever had. The sauce is great but also miss out the true taste of beef as it is.   I was looking for a good place to eat before going to Lisbon, and several websites and blogs recommended this place. We went to the Rua de San Bento location because I had heard that the one in Mercado de Ribera (time out) was not as good. When we arrived, everything was completely closed (nothing could be seen through the window), but a small sign instructed us to ring the doorbell. We did, and when we walked in, it was like being transported back in time to a small bar with very classic decor and only a few tables, but it was extremely nice and cozy. My boyfriend and I ordered the famous "Bife a Cafe," which was delicious! We were overjoyed! The waiter was also very attentive, and we noticed that reservations are always required, as it was completely full on a weekday at lunchtime (luckily I had made it about a month in advance). Without a doubt, if I return to Lisbon, this is a place I will visit again!   Ate Portuguese steak and I enjoyed it. I was expecting less but it was good enough. Although not from the best I’ve eaten. I would had enjoyed it more if I had french fries with my steak. I went there 1 hour prior their closing time and they were no longer serving french fries with the steak, but only pre-boiled rice which they warmed up for me in the microwave. We wanted to eat late dinner, so we arrived in TimeOut Market before 11pm (over 1h before closing), and we already couldn’t get fries with our steak - instead we were offered a boiled rice, which was a pity. On the top of that we couldn’t pay with cash anymore, so it’s also a bit of a minus - there is no info anywhere, that after some point u can’t do it.   Steak over cooked, ordered medium but came out well done; waited 45 min; the worst is that they would intentionally give smaller portion, or half size steak, to tourist, it was the smallest piece of steak I have ever seen, also, we compared to a local person’s order which was expectation the same item but 2x the size) so need to watch out.   I really wanted this to be good. However each mouthful was exceedingly chewy. Whilst the sauce was very tasty, it was taken away by the fact that I had to chew each mouthful about 100 times.   I liked the food that I ate here, and really enjoyed the concept of the dish. I do wish that they used a different cut of beef, but that is just preference. The atmosphere here was not really that enjoyable, and we also we're sat at the table near the restroom. The waiter also wasn't our favorite, especially with how he handled the wine service.   Just wow. My most memorable foodie experience in a city packed with great food, this is a place dripping with ambience and old school charm. Ring the doorbell for entry into the cosy-womb-like interior, by suited waiters. The menu is concise, serving three variations on sirloin or fillet mignon, with a delicious vegetarian and cod alternative, or steak sandwich. I plumped for the Portuguese-style steak, rare fillet steak swimming in a warming garlicky, buttery sauce topped with confit garlic, served with fresh crisp-like potato discs. Absolutely melted on my tongue, and I poured the chips into the sauce to soak up every morsel. Don’t intend on a quick bite here – we luxuriated for over three hours, finishing with tawny port and a cracking chocolate dessert. Cost is on the pricier side for Lisbon, but outstanding value for the quality of food, and the London equivalent – I paid 47 euros for two courses and bread, including a huge gin and tonic and an after-dinner port. Service was top-notch not because it is fancy but because the staff who would recommend you exactly what you need. Will definitely have another visit next time I come to Lisbon.   A Tasty Small Steak I have read many reviews on this place and love my steaks. So, expectedly, when I arrived at Mercado da Ribeira (food hall) and noticed the writing on the Cafe De Sao Bento menu wall stating 'Best steak in Lisbon' my expectations soared. So my wife ordered the Bife do Lombo at a cost of 16,5 euros (with no sides)! Upon arrival the steak was cooked to order (medium) and tasty but decidedly small which was very disappointing. Had the place not been so packed I would have returned the steak and chosen from the other restaurants available. Would I eat there again...no! For a reduced budget you can have the same good and nice meal that is sold in this restaurant on other places. Place is small and only good for one or two people, more is considered a crowd...
