We booked a table via „The Fork“ and came after 30 min Uber drive to the restaurant located outside of the city on the stormy, chilly evening in Lisbon. The service explained to us that we will be sitting outside in the open plastic tent because we „didn’t choose the option to be seated inside“. After explaining to them that there was no such an option in the system, super unfriendly lady answered „we should have called them“. The reason why we didn’t call is simply because nobody could assume that a restaurant with a Michelin Guide recommendation would sit you outside at 11 degrees while rain pouring down the last 24 hours. Long story short - together with other 3 shocked couples, we took a place outside, and froze our as*** and feet off while eating the dinner. Under normal circumstances we would have never stayed but since it was almost 9pm and it would have taken us another 30 minutes to go back to the city - we chose to have a quick dinner. The food was tasty, but - again doesn’t taste that good while eating it with cold hands and rain drops in your face. For someone who loves fine dining & good restaurants, again „O Frade“ is a „nice“ example of how good food is not enough to have a good experience. It takes much more than that. Starting for example with a decent service. And O Frade is really very very low with their customer experience. A terrible eating experience. The waitress looks amiable but with a fake smile and the chief’s attitude looks like he is the god. They are busy for serve a white family not even catch a sight on customs who want pay for bill. I asked them 3 times to pay for the bill. Disappointed and will never come to this restaurant again. This restaurant is located near Jerónimos Monastery, but the church closes at 6PM, and the restaurant opens at 7:30PM, so you need to find something to do in between. The food and service are good, it is on a more pricy side comparing to the other places we tried in Lisbon. They only have bar seats, the bar stools are not very comfortable. Wow this was a great find! Delicious food, very friendly service and a great counter bar where you can watch the chef in action. There is also a very nice outdoor seating area. What an interesting place. It seems the chef twists traditional portuguese cooking, resulting in a very interesting take. For example, we had the ox tail stew, which is a traditional Portuguese, but the chef prepares it with sweet pumpkin, sweet potatoes, caramelized onions, and a super creamy mashed potatoes. It was a bit sweet for my personal taste, but the dish is flawless and very good. I can see how it might appeal to more foreign taste buds. We also had the duck rice. Again, this is a very traditional portugueses dish, usually a dry rice and shredded duck meat finished in the oven. The chef version was a wet creamy rice, super flavourful. These are also common in Portugal, but I would describe it more like a duck risotto. They also have a traditional wine called vinho de talha, this is very raw, natural, and unprocessed wine. I've only tried the red, and it might be a bit aggressive for a more delicate palate. Don't let that discourage you, and ask for a taste before deciding. They also have other excellent choices in wine, ask for advice, and discover the best wine you had in a long time. Great restaurant in a great area to go for a walk after lunch. Came here for lunch during a week day based on the good reviews and the listing in the guide Michelin. We weren’t disappointed. The service was very friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. The food itself was very fresh, especially the razor claws and the tartare. One very thing that’s makes this restaurant stand out are their organic wines and the unique, orange colour. Only negative aspect is the busy street which can be noisy if you are sitting outside. Value for price ratio is good. We would recommend going there. Overall a very pleasant experience! Good restaurant, but still a tiny bit away from where it wants to be. Food was definitely good, I believe I can feel lots of love and passion put in here by the chef. But there were a few things on service and management side that could have been better. For example there were real difficulties in recommending us a good wine - we just got the opposite of what we described and a lot of waiting was involved around wine. We saw another table refusing the wine that was brought, so it was not just us. :) Also the inside lighting and interior felt too bright to make it cosy, and we kinda would have expected the Couvert to be included at this price level. We had steak tartar, the pork pie (recommended), duck with rice and the sorbet dessert. We were walk-ins and were sat at the corner inside overlooking the street and we loved it. The bread with the soft butter and olive oil was delicious but it was Euro 2.5 per person. The steak tartar came first and it was sooo delicious. The ingredients mixed in with the juicy raw steak was just out of this world good! Unfortunately it was all downhill from there. The tiny pork pie was recommended to us. It was okay, not anything very special in our humble opinion. The duck rice was fine. It felt like something I could easily tossed together if I had the duck. The monkfish was interesting. It was plated like the French haute cuisine in an elegant way but I didn't like the sauce at all. All in all the taste was not to my liking. We ordered a dessert anyway, the lemon sorbet was delicious. The service was strange, friendly, but with strange humor and looked not very eager to help us. I rarely give poor reviews but apparently this place is only frequented by Michelin followers that have no idea what they are talking about. The dishes were neither inventive, visually pleasing or complex… almost sloppy. Beef Tartar was chewy and had minimal flavor. Duck rice was completely disappointing… a mound of mush covered in parsley. Lemon meringue was way to sweet and just a mess as you can see. The 3.5€ house meat pie appetizer was very tasty however. Continuing my food journey across Europe. O Frade is my first Michelin restaurant in Portugal. Ordered their Aged Beef Tartare and Walnut Cake with Ice Cream for dessert. Both were executed extremely well. O Frade clearly deserves their Michelin. My one complaint was the interval between main course and dessert was 10 minutes. Well, we were caught on the recommendation from Michelin guide, but to be honest the outcome wasn’t what we expected. Pricy food, some strange combinations and small portions. My myself had difficulty to choose as the menu is basically mix of everything, not Portuguese, Spanish nor Italian. Service was good, we were able to get a place even though all was reserved. It was little bit rushed too. I wouldn’t visit again for sure, there’s plenty of better options in the area for more enjoyable place to eat for way better price. Fantastic Portuguese food in a beautiful setting. Being a food lover, I really enjoyed watching the chefs plate the food, it made me more and more hungry. We had the duck rice, monkfish and octopus main dishes. You could barely taste the duck in the mush of rice and chorizo. The monkfish dish was not great, and the octopus dish was more of a bean stew than actually finding or tasting any octopus. Small, family owned, produce driven. I loved it. Honestly, I am outraged that this place has a 4.4 Google rating. I think it was the best meal we had in Lisbon by a country mile. Staff were lovely, even accommodating us at a corner window table when we didn't have a booking. The food was excellent, the wine came from a vineyard owned by the family - what more can you ask for? The duck rice was amazing. I wasn't convinced by the description or the photos, but I'd go back to Lisbon just to eat it again. Soft tones of crepuscular blue and green, enclosed in a warm fawn tiles and temperate dark shrub furniture. Personal preference for the outside sitting as it was with lower seat, and the presence of fire heater did add an additional feeling of comfort and beauty to the experience. After a morning and mid afternoon enjoying the many delights around Belem, a little nourishment was required before our visit to the Monastery of Jerónimos. We happened upon O Frade by chance and we couldn't have been luckier. Two seats at the counter, the last before the end of lunch service. Razor clams, rabbit and mushroom rice dishes were superb washed down with a white wine from Alentejo. Wonderful watching the chef and team work with great attention to detail. Absolutely fantastic. One of my favorite meals I had on a trip to Portugal. The food is incredibly fresh and the flavors are divine. Visited for lunch on a Tuesday, we did not have a reservation but was seated immediately. So cool sitting at the counter and watching the chefs work. For two of us we ordered 4 dishes and it was the right amount. The razor clams were amazing, cooked perfectly and really bright taste. Could drink the sauce it was so good. The pork pie was flaky and savory. The salad was simple but maybe the best salad I’ve ever had, due to house made pickles. And the rabbit was so tender and delicious. Definitely recommend this spot. The duck rice was amazing: sausage was cut into small pieces so you got a wonderful spoonful each time. Duck was shredded and well distributed. Food was good but I think razor clams were not really in season at the time so it didn’t taste extremely fresh (better off having seafood in Madeira). The tartar was good but the beef quality is not that flavourful in comparison to North American beef quality (noticing this difference in most restaurants in Portugal). We had very nice dinner. We were 4 so we almost covered Al the menu. Appetizers were delicious. We had 4 main courses- ox tail which was great, salad that was very special but the other 2 dishes duck rice and fish wasn’t for our taste. TOURISTS BEWARE. Our experience at O Frade was decent up until the bill came. We were overcharged by around 8 euros for a single glass of port wine. At the time of service, the waitress obliged to our order of a 4 euro glass without any further comments or questions. It wasn't until the bill came that we were charged for a 12 euro glass of 10 year old port and she claimed that the restaurant had long ran out of the cheaper variant. We protested to no avail and found out afterwards that this restaurant is also UNLISTED on Portugal's official book of complaints, which is supposed to be mandatory for every establishment. Very appalling to find that the Michelin guide has distinguished a restaurant of this caliber that will openly scam tourists. (Traduzido pelo Google) TURISTAS, CUIDADO. The restaurant provides a race to get everyone in and out as fast as they can. As soon as you are seated the menu is given and before you can have a drink the first course is on its way. A few bites in and the second course arrives and this continues until they have you out the door. This was for everyone in the restaurant. We sat astonished as plates of food piled up in front of people as they raced to get through each course. As for the food it is average at best. There is no time to really taste or enjoy the food. A theatre is made of them tasting each dish as it comes out but obviously they didn’t know the duck rice was over salted and tasted heavily of orange. This restaurant has taken away the ambiance and enjoyment of going out for dinner. The food was delicious, the price a bit steep and the service was aggressive. I don't mind paying more for unique food options, but I do mind being pressured to make choices that I don't really want to. I also don't enjoy being questioned about my choices and made to feel wrong about what i want to order. Our server was continuing to push main courses when we really only wanted tapas. And when we said we only wanted tapas, he made you feel crazy for not wanting to order the larger mains. I understand upselling... but maybe do it in a way that isn't condescending to customers. I also enjoy a good port, but was made to feel like this choice was incorrect, and so.... I'm the end, he lost a sale in that as I did not end up ordering it. Maybe if you stop acting like you're better than the customer, you'll sell more. Sometimes the customers know what they like. I know Michelin thinks this is a Bib Gourmand. Perhaps service was indifferent, cold, and lacking during the week and I found my experience here disappointing. We arrived at opening during the week and I’m not sure why the staff was disinterested to the entire room. Plus are quaint spot, decent execution on Portuguese cooking, and not terribly expensive. They are light on flavours and smaller portion sizes made this bib gourmand option seem less great than ones I’ve found in Spain or France. The service and poor pacing of the meal (long wait times between dishes) made the overall experience uninviting. I would say there are far better non Michelin restaurant to enjoy food in Lisbon. It was a good family lunch with great service and tasty dishes. The food was indeed great but a few plates lacked flavour, nothing too bad. We found this place while On holiday in Lisbon. It was Awesome! The food was amazing, the service was perfect. They spoke English really well and we’re very accomodating. It was out last day in Lisbon and we decided to check this restaurant out. The place is small & cozy, with an open kitchen. Food: the steak tartar - probably, the worse I've ever tried - very salty (because they put a lot of anchovies and the taste of meet is completely gone; too much of ingredients in this simple dish variation). The second one was rice with duck (risotto type) which was completely breathtaking! The desert (picture attached) was breathtaking too lol. The service was good. Had a wonderful lunch here. We ordered 4 dishes plus a dessert between 2 people, accompanied by a 10 yr Tawny Port. The Duck rice made with Portuguese rice, the Special Pie, the rabbit, and the salad. Loved the salad and the pie, other food was good too. The bread was also delicious with very light butter. I was really not feeling comfortable during this dinner. Felt like we were being pressured and rushed to go through the food. Had a few entrees which were ok but nothing to write home about. Mains were also ok but again nothing special. The duck rice was probably the only somewhat decent dish. The wine explanations were basically one word. Good, dry, sweet. 0 help in choosing. Overall, felt like they were rushing us through all the dishes, taking plates while still eating some of the entrees, etc. I do realise that we had a somewhat late dinner reservation, but dont allow late reservations if you are going to make your guests feel unwelcome. We made a lunch reservation to dine at O Frade, if you can't get a reservation, I would suggest trying to come during the lunch service around 1230pm, as they were able to seat a few extra people. The meal was very affordable, we were able to sit at the counter which is a fun experience. Nice place after visiting Belém and Jerónimos Monastery. The service was ok. When we went the kitchen closed at 15:00, so keep that in mind. Nice selection of appetizers, keep in mind that the portions are small. Razor claims are really good, but the rabbit escabeche was too sour, and the octopus was hard and was lost in the bell pepper stew. As a main course we had rice and that was ok. We were very much looking forward to testing this restaurant which has a lot of good reviews and has been awarded bib Michelin. Unfortunately, the disappointment was enormous. Sharing plates are extremely expensive for the quantity (4 small oysters at 14 euros for example !!?). I am used to these types of restaurants with small plates to share and I don't mind paying a lot for small dishes when the quality is there, but here, the food was tasteless. The 4 oysters at 14€ are not worth their price in terms of preparation, the beef tartare is more than ordinary, the duck rice does not taste like duck. Finally, waiters put bread and butter on your table without asking and charge it at the end of the meal. This place seemed super promising based off of all of the online reviews, but was unfortunately a pretty big let down. We made a reservation for 9:30. We got sat about 30 minutes late. Several parties that showed up after us got sat before, which was a bit annoying. The manager noticed we had been standing there for 20+ minutes after our reservation time, so he came over and offered us a glass of wine. We thanked him and accepted it - they ended up charging us for the two glasses at the end of the meal. Overall the food was solid. Maybe the bad service and long wait made it difficult to view positively, but overall, one of the least memorable experiences I’ve had after about a month in Europe. We had two dinners in this tiny restaurant. We liked it so much the first night, that decided to come back the night after. It is very popular with tourists unfortunately and may seem as a tourist trap but it is an excellent restaurant where the chef blends spices and ingredients smartly, ie they don’t overpower the dish. He doesn’t use excessive amount of butter or oil which many restaurateurs do instead to give flavor/richness to the dish. He is truly very skilful! Ask for his advice if you sit at the counter and you won’t be disappointed. Every single dish we ordered was amazing. My husband hates black garlic but the taste of it was so subtle in the Frade’s special pie that he wished he ordered more 😁. The wines are also good. The service should be improved though. The first night we came, we had to wait for 15 more minutes for our table that we reserved. They let other couple in front of us. The chef cares about the guests that sit across the counter but he cannot oversee the staff who serve outside tables. Very highly rated but very disappointing for me. First they do the thing where they give you bread and olive oil and butter when you sit down. It seems like it’s free but it’s not. I ordered the tuna with scrambled eggs and the tuna was not very flavorful and the eggs were sitting in a ton of olive oil. I don't recommend going here, unless you want to spend 100€/person. We only wanted drinks so they made us sit on the sidewalk next to a small counter on the sun. Due to the incline sidewalk I almost fell as I was sitting. The waitress came to us every 4 minutes asking what will we eat. After the 3rd question we relented and asked for a shrimp tapas on the condition to get another table, which we get inside (guess what, at a small counter where you can't even pull under it, but atleast it was flat and wasn't on the sun). While we were sitting inside the waitress came to us atleast 8 times during a 30 minutes meal asking what else do we order. Quando nos sentamos, havia tapas de pão e manteiga que não pedimos, mas achamos que era de cortesia. Deveríamos ter perguntado, pois eles nos cobraram por isso. Enquanto estávamos sentados lá dentro, a garçonete veio até nós pelo menos 8 vezes durante uma refeição de 30 minutos perguntando o que mais pedíamos. We had a wonderful meal for two at O Frade, an intimate eatery that provides impeccable service from within a rounded countertop which serves as chef’s table-ish seating for all indoor diners. We had the octopus and bell pepper and rabbit plates to share, with the duck rice as our main. All were creative, complex, and delicious; as were our glasses of their 10 year port. It’s a sort of Michelin-casual place (with food comparable to a starred restaurant) worth a trip if you’re in Lisbon. We looooove our dinner here! Indeed one of the best meals we have had! If we had more time in Lisbon we would have come back! They make such good and hearty traditional Portuguese food but put a right amount of creativity to it. So refreshing. For a while I have been not so sure about Michelin guide restaurants since they could be disappointing in my experience (I have tried them in San Francisco, New York, Peru, etc., and the results are hit or miss) . But this one is sooo amazing! The food is so fresh and delicious, with complex yet simplified tastes. You can tell they truly care about their food and service, and it’s an enjoyment to be able to sit at the chefs counter and watch them assemble and prepare a dish. My WORST experience ever in Lisbon. PLEASE DONT go to this RACIST restaurant! We constantly dined at fine dining restaurants, from Michelin 3 stars to Michelin guide. The hostess from O Frade with dyed red hair and heavy makeup upset me so much today. We left with feeling horrible. When we arrived, the restaurant was packed in the early afternoon, but a few customers were finishing up their meals. First she asked us to wait for a few minutes. Later she checked me (I’m a person of color, she is white) from top to bottom, her look made me feel immediately uncomfortable. Later, she asked us to leave without any legitimate reasons. We insisted to know the reason, she refused to explain, acting weird, then made up the lamest excuse, saying the restaurant is full… well, some guests were just finishing up…she either hates her job, or a simply RACIST, because we saw her serving other white guests quite warmly. We almost dine out everyday in restaurants all over the world, never had experience like this. We had a good experience in this tiny resto-bar. Gui, the chef who served us and prepared the dishes we enjoyed, was nice and friendly. They recommend ordering 2-3 starters and one main for two people. The starters are relatively big so ordering starters solely, say 5, will allow you to taste more while still filling your stomach. The food here is good overall. Our favourites were: Presunto de Vaca (Cecina), Coelho de Coentrada and Bolo de Nozes. The Polvo com Pimentos e Porco wasn't as soft and smooth as an octopus should be, but it wasn't bad either. The Creme de Leite de Cabra's caramelised sugar was too burnt. Was excited to try this Michelin Guide resto in the neighborhood because of the good rating and reviews (which now, I realized came mostly from tourists who doesn't know the real portuguese cuisine), and I see queues when I pass by. Great experience and very delicious food, we had a nice evening sitting at the bar. The colleagues were very nice, attentive, passionate about their food and always take their time to explain us their dishes in every single detail. We had the two daily special tapas which was a very tender tuna and pork cheek with strawberry sauce- the best pork cheek that we’ve had in Portugal! Great lunch place to hit up if you’re around Belem for various sites. Seats around the chefs in the middle, counter style dining. Great selection of small tapas size dishes where the cod stuffed pepper and iberico ham were tasty followed by the duck rice (very filling portion) and the octopus. Everything was delicious and the staff were welcoming and friendly too. Saw a couple of people turned away as it doesn’t have a lot of seats so probably book ahead. The place is cute and a bit away from tourists, but ultimately a tourist trap. The service was nice and the octopus I had was good (quality-wise but nothing to rave about), even if slightly overpriced. Don’t mind paying more if it’s worth it but this time it wasn’t. Plus 5€ cover charge for a slice of bread on a weekday lunch? No. That’s the charge in a more upscale restaurant. I won’t be going back. Had a lovely lunch here after visiting the sights in Belem. A very short walk from the Monastery. Restaurant is quite small. Only 12 covers with COVID but there is outdoor seating. Most of seating is at the bar where you can watch the food being prepared and chat with the staff. Make a reservation so you aren’t disappointed. Staff are friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful. The menu was in Portuguese but our server was happy to translate and make recommendations which I’m so glad we followed. The wine suggestions were perfect too. The food is outstanding. We had sheep cheese with quince jelly, figs, and walnuts. Salt cod stuffed red pepper. Rabbit salad which I though was the best dish. The flavour combination was so good. I was mopping up all the goodness with the excellent bread. Duck rice was our shared main - which was my spouse’s favourite. Highly recommend. A combinação de sabores foi tão boa. Eu estava limpando todas as delícias com o pão excelente. Arroz de pato era nosso prato principal compartilhado - que era o favorito da minha esposa. Savory food, nicely designed plate, excellent service, small and cozy restaurant with only few chairs next to the bar. Most of the customers are local . I have tried the octopus, it's delicious. This is a great place; quite small but the service is so good, you can see them preparing the food if you get a sit around the bar seating area and the food is fresh, authentic and delicious!! WOW truly one of the best meals we had in Portugal - phenomenal. We love the setup with sitting around the bar and interacting with the culinary team, food is outstanding, the wines are truly unique (the owner of the restaurant owns a vineyard in Alentejo and only sells his own wines). Only downside is that the wine prices are quite high for Portugal, about double of what you would expect elsewhere. Cooking up some magic here. During my short trip, I ended up here twice as the food was amazing and the service even better! The food is super tasty and also quite unique. The seabas rice and chocolate mousse is out of this world. I tried the cod on the second day and that was amazing as well. Try the home made liqueur; it's one of a kind.
