A high-end dining experience not soon to be forgotten, Belcanto has grown even more famous by being featured on Somebody Feed Phil. The food is stunningly good and beautiful, but the real standout component of the experience is the service. Belcanto runs like clockwork and is remarkable to observe. We had both of the tasting menus between the three of us, and it was hard to choose between the two. My favorite bite of the night may have been the first, an amuse bouche of broccoli that somehow distilled the essence of broccoli into one exquisite bite. Throughout, no taste or texture was out of place, and the non-alcoholic beverage pairing was well worth it, with an insanely good parsley and thyme cold tea-like drink being a standout. My companion had the basic wine pairing (i.e., not the premium pairing) and loved it. A great night and I can't wait to return. Phenomenal experience, all around. When I initially thought about what a top dining experience would be, it all centered on the food. The other aspects like the ambiance, the service, and the small details didn't come to mind. That changed after our experience at Belcanto. A top dining experience that earns such accolades is just that, an experience. From the moment we walked in, I felt like a celebrity. Everyone smiled at us, and it felt like we were being welcomed into a family's home. The night was all about us, and we were meant to enjoy our time. Nothing else. The service was perfect. Absolutely perfect. I felt really special. We ordered the classic tasting menu, and also added one of their most famous entrees per our waiter's recommendation. We were not disappointed. I won't give anything away, you need to experience it for yourself. I truly can't think of what a better dining experience could be. Yes, it's expensive, but it was worth every penny. My wife and I were completely in the moment, and we didn't want the night to end. This restaurant deserves every accolade and more. The creativity of chef José Avillez is amazing - I love this combination of excellent cooking, the curiosity of a discoverer and the incredible fantasy of an artist, leading to this journey across the landscapes where you see the food with different eyes. It started with some amuse-bouche - the tuna tartar, combined with tempura and chorizo was pure umami. Along the journey, the sea bass was a further peak (all plates were actually highlights), as it was pure sea but kept a perfect equilibrium between the individual components. We came to Belcanto jetlagged but keen to have a culinary experience and that was exactly what we got. We had both the classic and landscapes menu and we both thought the landscape menu had a slight edge. Unfortunately we were unable to have the wine pairing as we were too tired but the sommelier gave us excellent recommendations on a white to go with the meal. I found the shrimp in particular to be outstanding. A memorable dining experience. We started our evening with a tour of the kitchen, the different cooking areas and the cooking staff. We chose the degustation menu Paisagens with wine harmonisation. We showed up at our reservation on time, were taken to a second level room. Were seated and forgotten, not even water was offered, they had one person to attend approximately 4 tables in that area. After almost 15 minutes we called the attention to at least have water or the wine list. We got the water, but wine took longer. About food, it took forever and can rate it as mediocre, there was no coordination between entries, empty wine glasses most of the times. Really guessing about the Michelin stars and being included in the best 50 restaurants in the world. We were in Portugal for quite a long time, and this restaurant was the worst and can't be compared with not even non-Michelin starred restaurants. Never again. We had a top notch dining experience at Belcanto. The atmosphere was professional but inviting. Interior clean and fairly minimalist with white walls and high brick arches. Service was knowledgeable yet entertaining and fun. Our primary server, Joaō, was great and made the meal interactive and Ross, our sommelier did a great job explaining the pairings. We ordered the classics menu and added the shrimp main course. For wine, we tried the premium Portuguese and regular pairings. While all courses were executed well and flavorful some stood out. I loved the deconstructed lobster caesar salad. The tender crustacean, avocado, and shaved ice like tomato extract were perfect together. Next, the golden egg with truffle was rich and decadent. Scarlet shrimp curry flavor was relatively mild lyered and delicious. Afterwards the pork was just the right amount of grease and crisp. In all the meal lasted nearly 4.5 hours but at no point felt like it was dragging. It was our first meal in Portugal and set the bar high! Belcanto is by far the best restaurant in Lisbon. The food was truly exceptional, and so was the service. I am rarely impressed by mains, but both the Hake and Sucking pig were truly unique dishes. The dishes on the menu each represent childhood memories of the chef, brought to us masterfully through playful twists (don’t want to ruin the surprises here :)) we loved the service, and had a marvelous time joking and laughing together with the team. This is a 2 Michelin stars restaurant that really proves that there is a reason and a skill for earning this distinction. The Prix Fixe menu starts at about €200pp. If you’re coming for lunch I highly recommend you skip breakfast. All the courses were interesting, wonderful combination of flavors. Each dish goes beyond its flavors to also account for textures and colors and different temperatures in the most surprising ways. This was the best meal I had in Lisbon (and the most expensive). I would go as far as to say this is an experience unlike others. It’s not just a meal. Make sure to block out 3 hours or so and even a little nap time after. They also don't offer tap water and keep re filling your glass by making you buy more bottled water without asking. This was generally poor form. One of the best meals my wife and I have had (amidst 44 European countries we have visited thus far)! Restaurant staff was very accommodating in spite of arriving without a reservation just before lunch closing. The Rice from the Atlantic was simply delicious (we ended up splitting this due to how large the plate is). Then we ordered both the Apple & Rhubarb pie and chocolate cake. Just an unbelievable dinner, an experience I will remember for the rest of my life. The food, the wine, the room are all top notch. The service was incredibly gracious and welcoming. All of our servers were a delight. Our sommelier showed us some amazing vintage Portuguese wines, he really went above and beyond to make it as special experience. Having been once before, I was afraid that the second visit would never live up to the first. I don't regret coming back at all, it was well worth the price we paid. Enjoyed a full evening dining at this establishment. It has exceptional food and service. The food and wine pairing was very good, putting emphasis on portuguese products which I really enjoyed. The set menus are varied and delicious, with each course being described as experiences consisting of a variety of flavors and textures. The staff and kitchen where able to facilitate for dietary restrictions, even for the set menus, which was handled in a great way. This made everything just as enjoyable for everyone who took part. The food was absolutely great - we had the classic tasting menu with wine pairing. My own favorite was the white fish that was cooked to perfection and had a super nice texture. Nevertheless, there are some things that should be improved and addressed. The wine pairing was a disappointment. The glasses were embarrassingly small and there were no questions asked if we liked the wine or not. When we finally got some red wine and asked for something that had more body (the one from the menu didn’t really have any identity and after so much cold white wine we had hoped for more ‘shift’ in taste) we got another red wine but was also charged 44 EUR extra. I know there are other equally highly rated restaurants (check your neighbor Alma for example) where the waiters would pay a little bit more attention to your liking of the wine and also refill your glass if it’s empty - especially when you decide to pour 8cl only. Another thing I found disappointing was the offering of one tiny piece of bread without asking if I wanted more through the long dinner. Finally, and this is important, I’m sure you don’t present the Michelin inspectors a fixed tip when they have to pay - there was a suggestion for 10% tips added to our bill without us asking. What else is there to say, when in Portugal? Was able to make lunch reservations for a Tuesday the night before. So worth it! Did the classics tasting menu, my friend was gluten-free and dairy intolerant and they were able to completely accommodate her. This took 3 hours and was a perfect way to dodge the afternoon heat and just really taste, be present, and enjoy the food. I just can't even describe all the dishes. Starting off with a crisp caviar and octopus covered chip and fried pork skin, my favorite dish being the the light full Caesar salad with shaved lemon ice, it seems like. That was just perfect to cut out the heaviness and the summer heat. The signature dish of the beautifully golden covered poached egg and the richness. Just every dish linked with the beautiful history of Portugal, including the crispy pork from one of the Portugal islands. To the personal touch from Jose Avillez providing a dessert sleeve instead of a napkin because when he was a young boy he was in too much of a hurry to wipe on a napkin and used his sleeve. I have travelled to so many places and have tried the most amazing food, but as far as I am concerned, this is the best chef in the world. His food is bold and beautiful, but incredibly accessible and familiar. There is no question this place is a fine dining experience, but there is such warmth in his food. It doesn't slap you in the face, it invites you in and slowly fills you with wonder. It is quite frankly, the most delicious meal I've experienced and it is undeniably special. Five star food with disappointing service. My wife and I went there on Saturday August 13th. They sat us immediately at a table right when you walk in. We waited there for about 10-15 minutes until a waiter came up and asked us if we wanted anything. Confused, we asked if they had menus? Water? Hi? Very strange. They came back with menus and water. Immediately we could smell the water. It was warm and smelled foul. We told the waiter something was up. He changed our glasses and poured us each small amounts of warm water from the same bottle and gave us our menus. No one ever greeted us or explained anything about the restaurant, menu, etc. Eventually a waiter came back and asked us if we wanted anything. Definitely made us feel uncomfortable. The rest of the night was relatively similar. They’d come out, seem labored by explaining the dish to us, and go. At dessert, the restaurant had a fun element where you wear a dress shirt sleeve as your napkin. However, by the time we got to that point, the playfulness of that moment seemed almost out of nowhere given how cold and stiff all the service had been until that point. The food 100% lives up to the hype. It was as delicious and interesting as we’d hoped. When we got the the bill, we paid a 10% tip for the staff including 15 euro for the dirty water. Visited this restaurant with my husband couple of weeks ago and we were really disappointed. Food was nice, but service was not up to the standard. Our wine glasses were empty multiple times, waiters were serving food and completely ignoring this. Had to call someone and ask to top up the glass. Butter was melting away in the middle of the table for the duration of the dinner. What’s the point to leave it on the table if you only gonna offer the bread once in the very begging of the dinner. Hostess barely looked at us when we were leaving the place and I saw her opening the door for all the other customers. Have to say, not everyone was treated this way, waiters were dancing around some other tables. We showed up on time, were polite with everyone and ordered like everyone else. The service here was beyond our expectations. Our server, Juao, was so kind and informative. The dishes were extremely innovative and the presentation was phenomenal. Every dish was delicious. We weren’t huge fans of the squab but that was more a personal choice. The 17-course tasting menu took about 2.5 hours and you could tell a lot of thought went into planning each dish. I have no idea how this place has 2 Michelin stars. We went here a few weeks ago and got the tasting menu with the wine pairing. Overall, there were a few very good dishes (a dessert, the olive bread) but most were underwhelming. The golden egg dish was almost inedible and most were just not impressive. Also, the wine pairings were hit and miss and one wine was almost undrinkable (one of our party had the sommelier actually try it to see if that was how it was supposed to taste). At this price point, the food should be incredible, the service should be on point and it should be an unforgettable night. We went to another 1 start Michelin place the week before and that place BLEW US AWAY (Vista in Portimão) at the same price point. I was the first person to enter, they gave me the WORST table in the whole place, had waiters behind my back all the time, which was really stressful. I was alone, but it still doesn't justify the worst table, another woman came alone much later and was given a nice table. This alone despite really good food is enough for me to never return again. They simply didn't want me there. We made this reservation well over a month in advance as we were so excited to try our first two star Michelin restaurant. Unfortunately, it was a completely subpar experience in nearly every aspect. To start, we sat down and were offered water, and noticed a strange smell in one of the glasses. We eventually realized it was dish soap and the smell did dissipate, but took some time. We noticed the same smell in nearly half of the glasses we received that night. We sat for 40 minutes after ordering the standard tasting menu and wine pairing before we were served anything. Another 20 minutes went by before our second course, and after that the sommelier was pouring wine while the food was also being put down in front of us, and chaotic explanation of both wine and food at the same time. We never had the same server or sommelier in succession, and wine glasses were put down in front of us before we even finished what we had, a polar opposite from how the service began. The whole experience felt rushed and disorganized. When bread was brought out, they never cleaned the table of crumbs till the last dessert was placed down. If you like gold leaf runny eggs for the Instagram or social media clout and nothing more than the place is perfect. 10% gratuity/tip is automatically included on the bill. A very pleasant gastronomic experience in a famous restaurant. The dishes were based around Portugese ingredients and were very well executed. I enjoyed the concentration of flavours and balance in every plate. Asian flavours were mixed in a couple of times and seemed mastered to the necessary extent. I particularly enjoyed the pork main, which combined rich flavor of the meat with crispy light skin. I thought the service was a bit disappointing. They seemed to focus much more on appearing precise than actually being well organized. We had to wait for quite a while before being offered and served aperitifs, meaning we were still drinking them while eating second course. Little details like constantly being ready when the guests require attention were also missing somewhat. Overall great food and a pleasant experience, although at the price point I would expect a slightly more organized service. The reason for my score is that a lot of the flavors were not to my palate. A lot of the flavors were rich, earthy, fermented, and fishy. If this sounds up your alley, then you should enjoy a lot of the dishes. Truffles are stereotypical luxury, but it's not for me. With the suckling pig dish, after already forcing myself to eat the truffled egg dish, I really couldn't stomach it anymore and scraped it off the lettuce. The servers laughed when they took the plate away. The caesar salad, the carrot dish, the pork itself, and the desserts were tasty. Everything else not so much to me. It's hard to think about other aspects of the experience when I didn't enjoy eating quite a few of the courses. A legendary Lisbon fine dining spot. There’s a lot to be said about the food, and any Michelin dining veteran knows the telltale signs of quality craftsmanship. The service was also fantastic: attentive but not overbearing, familiar but at a safe remove. I’m a serial napkin dropper and each time new napkins appeared as if out of thin air. On our next visit we will probably done a la carte instead of the tasting menu. We elected the “premium” wine pairing, which was fabulous of course. But the wines tended to be old man stuffy wines. Great selections, to be sure, but not exactly our style. Next time we will go for a quality bottle. Overall, well-earned legendary status for Lisbon and worth the visit. We ate small simple meals prior to going for a dinner here as it was our first fine dining experience and we wanted nothing to ruin it. Unfortunately, my partner left with a case of food poisoning that left her bed ridden the last few days of our vacation and an uncomfortable 14 hour journey home. TL;DR Don't go here and you will save your time and money. --------------------------- Went here with my fiancé about two weeks ago. She wanted to celebrate our engagement and found a reservation during lunch time. They seated us next to a table that had small kids (small annoyance because they were very vocal). We chose the Evolution tasting menu based upon our server's recommendation. The food simply did not taste good. Maybe it was just a mismatch of flavor profiles being served versus what we liked. Everything was cooked well, but the taste was extremely lacking. The service was great, but that means nothing when the food is blah. By the end of it, were were down 450+ USD along with 2.5 hours of our day (which was the worst part). I heavily suggest reconsidering going to this restaurant if you are interested. Enjoy walking the streets of Lisbon and get some street food (it is far better, trust me). They gave an envelope at the end of the meal listing all the dishes we tried. It didn't even exactly match up to what we had! That is pretty lazy. (Also, it is a reminder of a bad experience, so it is going in the trash). I hope at some point Michelin ratings are re-evaluated because besides the service, this ain't it. What a delectable dinner I had tonight! I can't fault many things in any part of the service more did any one dish disappoint me. The poached golden egg was magnificent, and the pairing was a display of Portugal's best and brightest wines throughout the entire dinner. Worthy of the Michelin stars and rating as one of the 50 best. Reservation was made several months in advance. Opted for the 9 course meal with wine pairing. Bread and butter was really great, tuna also, appetizer ok but main course was nothing special at all, I wouldn't eat that again for free, weird taste. Some really special dishes - the chicken skin and the deconstructed apple pie were highlights for me. A few dishes were a bit more pedestrian, and I felt the service was a mite too swift. We were a bit nervous taking our two kids to a 2 Michelin Star restaurant, but we all had the time of our lives! The staff were so kind and it was a memory we will all treasure. The food was delicious and creative, everything you expect a restaurant of this caliber to be, and even though we opted for the a la carte menu, we ended up with enough courses/food to basically be part of the tasting menu experience (which was perfect for us, since we weren't sure if our kids could handle the length of time of a tasting menu). Our second time in Lisbon/Portugal, and we kind of already familiarized Lisbon in our first go and for our second time, we wanted to explore more of the food scene here and Belcanto and the other we ate at did not disappoint. I have been to some fine dining restaurants but this was our first Michelin starred one, and it was a great experience. Nothing presumptuous about the place! I mean it was beautifully decorated but the service was very welcoming which is the most important part for me. My wife and I did not reserve beforehand, and we got really really fortunate to be able to get a spot here for dinner. As soon as we entered, we asked about it and the friendly receptionist mentioned there was a last minute cancellation and the rest is history! We did the Evolution tasting menu and a few of their champagne and wines. And our seat had a perfect view over the kitchen, and I believe chef Jose Avillez was there! Our main guy, Jose, who is from Porto was very nice and informative in serving each of the beautiful dishes! Each dish was a delightful surprise. Started off really good, the snacks/amuse bouche were inventive, fresh, full of flavour but delicate. The starters really highlighted the ingredients with extremely clean flavours, but ended with a flourish of decadence and richness with the golden egg, setting up for the mains. The mains were delicious, but at this point began to lose my excitement - extremely well-cooked dishes, but simple flavour profiles. Dessert seems to have been a missed opportunity - like so many establishments, I felt like less focus and finesse was brought to the flavours.While the chocolate dessert looked visually seductive, the flavour was very one-note of dark cocoa. This made the final dessert jarring - incredibly sweet and overwhelming. Good meal and this classic tasting menu was good for the 'traditional' Belcanto experience, but if I could go back I'd have chosen their other tasting menu. Belcanto is one of those rare dining experiences that one never forgets. It was a dining adventure with many chef surprises. We ordered ala carte with an entre and main. The chef also gave us several starters including a light martini drink, a fois gras truffle, a delightful oyster. I had the lobster salad which was perfectly done. My wife was disappointed with the squab main which was under cooked when she had asked for it to be more done, but our friend who also ordered the squab was pleased. Belcanto is a journey you don’t want to miss. If you only have time for one special dinner in Lisbon, have it here. I had an amazing time under the charming guidance of Joao Oliveira. He is a perfect example for an experience manager, that masterful takes care of the individual needs and expectations of the guests placed in his trust…without ever loosing his personality in the process ;) The tasting menu was beautiful and felt quite unique to me. Chef Jose Avillez manages to tell his story with nuance and grace. A lot of tasting menus seem to be never ending, overcomplicated marathons of dishes, that try to fight for our attention. Not so much here. By the time you get to the main course you feel perfectly satisfied. Every dish can shine for what it is, not trying to compete with the one before or after, rather working together. Clean refined flavors, top quality ingredients, carefully put together with a little edge at times. The missing cheese course was a pleasant surprise! If it doesn’t help to tell your story, don’t include it. Same goes for the wine selection. Overall an amazing experience. Great people, great location, great menu and a well tailored experience. Top end 2 michie experience in central Lisbon. The dining area is relatively formal but still has a relaxed feel helped by the friendly and welcoming service which didn’t miss a beat. There’s the “main” tasting menu (carousel menu) as well as a smaller tasting menu and a la carte. We opted for the carousel, and it didn’t disappoint - the seafood dishes such as the horse mackerel dish, prawns in dashi, and the lobster dish were particular standouts but to be honest all plates were very tasty. Absolutely wonderful! One of the best meals we have ever had. We both did the Evolution menu with the wine pairing - definitely a large amount of food but not too much. Service was above and beyond excellent. It was a long meal given the number of courses, but we never had an empty drink or waited for more than a few moments for the next course. We had a very loud and obnoxious table next to us (really the only negative all night, and certainly not the restaurant’s fault) but they handled well. After dessert, they also welcomed us back into the kitchen to see how everything was made and meet the chefs. An awesome experience. An excellent restaurant which really deserves to be in the 50 best of the world. They offer both tasting menus as well as individual selections. The price was Euro 185 for the Evolution Tasting, which is a new menu, composed by 3 "tempos" (3 sections) that will last 2 to 2.5hs. The Classic tasting cost Euro 165 and had 8 dishes lasting 1.5hs. If you will prefer individual dishes it will cost around Euro 40 for a starter, 50 for the main dish and 20 for the dessert, totalling Euro 110. We chose the Classic tasting as its composed of all the Classic dishes and, really, who would come to a 50 best restaurant and not have a tasting menu? Of all 8 dishes, for the 3 were a masterpiece: a cherry and nut gaspacho (cold soup served in a glass), the perfect egg with troufle oil and gold sheet (yes, a real gold sheet on top of the yolk), and the seabass (uau, what is this dish?? You can taste the sea in it!). Overall, I left completelly satisfied, happy and missing already the menu. The service is very good as well, they even pointed me to a wine store that has the wine we drank and which we wanted to buy more. Dá para sentir o gosto do mar nele!). No geral, saí completamente satisfeito, feliz e já com saudades do cardápio. Holy moly! This place is incredible. We didn’t have a reservation but were accommodated immediately. We didn’t really know what to expect but were floored by all of the inventive and delicious snacks served to occupy us before the main course. My mother is very picky when it comes to meat and so the restaurant made sure to make her options work for her palette. The servers were entertaining and always on top of stuff. They forgot a salad we ordered and apologized but it wasn’t an issue for us because of the amazing service — plus, we were surprisingly full even before our main courses. Am not surprised that this restaurant received the recognition of 2 Michelin stars. Fantastic staff, delightful flavours and surprise after surprise! One of my favourite was the 'tuna rose' hidden within the bouquet of flowers. Even though it's truly world class dining, there was no pretense and the team were was superbly warm. We came here for my mum's birthday dinner and had the Lisbon menu. It was quite extraordinary. Especially the golden goose egg and the delicate suckling pig. For what it is, it's actually quite affordable and they also have a great list of Portguese wines. If you want to treat yourself to something quite unique, go here. Definitely abundance of creativity and fun can be found in all the dishes. However, I would expect more for such a highly rated restaurant. I ordered Lisbon menu with 3 wine pairings. It took awhile for wines to start opening up, so the wines were not good pairs, personally, to the pace of all the dishes. The egg dish was quite amazing actually. And Dip in the sea (the cod dish) was pleasantly surprising and so were the chef's compliments. On the other hand, both of the meat dishes were very disappointing. Deserts were somewhat mediocre. Overall, the experience (including service) was good and food was all right. Had the price been a little bit more reasonable, I don't think my ratings will be so harsh. Allow me to preface that this was my first 2+ Michelin star experience, perhaps I expected something different than I should have. That said I have trained in a french kitchen and been to quite a few restaurants considered to be top tier. The food was... Ok. I was consistently presented with experiences I had never had, but I was not consistently presented with good tasting food. Every single dish was without question cooked to perfection, however during the full 14 courses, I felt like everything was a little under seasoned. I *loved* the new textures and experiences brought by the molecular gastronomy, however I don't think it was enough overall. Also, my wife suffers from some admittedly annoying food allergies, but I have had many lesser restaurants handle it better. She had dishes that were honestly just bad. I know that a 2 star restaurant like this excels at perfection, but I believe they've lost their way some. In the name of a type of "perfection" I believe we got some really mediocre dishes and in the case of something made to work around food allergies, some bad food. All around I was disappointed. I just expected more than an experience. Out of 14 courses most fell on a personal scale of 6-7 out of 10. I am disappoint. Marvelous foods. We went there for lunch and learned that same menu is offered for dinner which was nice since dinner was all booked. The teaser starters were amazing.
