First time the door had to be opened by the people who worked there. But the ambiance was interesting and the menu looked good. But for the value, it wasn't there. Food was good not the best but the price was comparable to some of the best meals we had. The best dish was the octopus and sweet potato. The oxtail was like any other oxtail I've had. We did not reserve seats so we had to wait for 15mins but they readily served us our table despite the small space they had. We went at 3pm so the lunch crowd wasn’t too bad. My husband and I went to Taberna Sal Grosso for lunch yesterday. We liked the octopus and cilantro rice, but the oxtail was just okay, and the pork belly had too much sauce on it. Later in the afternoon, around 3 pm, we both started feeling really sick. We had to go back to our room, and we're still sick the next day. We threw up a lot and had diarrhea. Just perfect! We were with a group of four for Lunch without a reservation and we did have to wait about 40 minutes but it was totally worth it! The waiters were amazing and spoke English well and they easily adapted to my allergies. This place is really not worth it, way too over booked for its value. The octopus was undercooked and the prawns way too overcooked, from experience I’m really suspecting the see food to be not fresh but frozen. On top of it I had food poisoning from it the night after my dinner there. The place was only full of tourist, no local come eat here and I should have trust my instinct on not stepping in from the crowd. Would absolutely not recommended. Luckly I make a reservation a day before. The inside is a bit small but comfortable atmosphere. They served the food very quickly.You can see the all menu from the black board. We tired this place following a recommendation and after trying to go for lunch. But we’re very disappointed, staff were friendly but the food massively undelivered, gambas were over cooked and the octopus was under and very chewy. Had a lunch here and thought it was generally good. For two people we ordered a bit too much food (4 dishes) so we were stuffed by the end. While I liked the pork cheek I didn't like what it came with. The octopus is a bit pricey and wasn't the most flavoursome. Aubergines and cod were delicious. Great restaurant for tapas. Definitely get a reservation before coming though as the restaurant is quite cozy. All dishes that we had were excellent while simple enough where you can identify the ingredients. So good. We didn't have a reservation but after some wait we were able to get in. Would recommend getting a reservation in advance to guarantee a table however. The food was amazing. Found this restaurant from Google. Takes a bit walk to this restaurant. It was crowded already before the restaurant is opened. A long queue and we weren’t reserved a table. Fortunately there was a table available near the entrance. The restaurant is small, but with great atmosphere, menu is on the blackboard is a bit hard to navigate. But the staffs are very nice and not hesitate to give you recommendations. The price of the food is about 20% more expensive than the original price we found from the Google review. The quality of the seafood was very good, would absolutely recommend the grilled octopus with sweet potato mash (the highlight of our day, we even ordered more mash potatoes) the baby squid, pan seared tuna and oxtail were also very well cooked and tasty. A very local one with a note of modernity. Sal Grosso is quite hidden in the streets of Lisbon but there’s always some crowd around the place during the dinner time. It seems impossible to have dinner without reservations so a visit needs to be planned in advance. The plan itself is quite small (for around 30 people max) and the tables are really close to each other. However, one doesn’t really hear other people talking. The staff is quite friendly and takes orders quite fast. All dishes are medium-sized and meant for sharing. We really loved tartare (amazing balance of salt and acidity) and passion fruit creme brûlée. When in Lisbon, do plan dinner here. It’s worth it! We went a week ago and we were pretty excited about the food with lots of good reviews from both YouTube and Google. The ambiance and services was fantastic but unfortunately food didn’t live up to our expectations. Mainly because dishes are overly salted to our taste, and the portion. My most excited dish was octopus rice. Felt the base was bean soup with rice which is new to me but octopus didn’t seem to fuse with the rice; felt like it’s a separate dish rather than one. Cod confit was simply too salted to my taste. Partner liked the Olmert of the pork cheeks, very tender. Taberna Sal Grosso is a modern taberna located in the alfama district serving petiscos, or small plates. The food was delicious! We tried the baby fried squid, beef tartare, octopus rice, and the pork cheeks with mashed sweet potatoes. Standouts were the beef tartare and the octopus rice. I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu. It's a small spot so I definitely recommend getting a reservation. We got super lucky on a Saturday afternoon late November for a seating without reservations (a table didn’t show up)! We arrived just at opening for lunch and was third in line after a table of 2 and 3. We were a table of 4 and we were seated around 15 minutes after opening (they give reservations 15 minutes to arrive). They do have a second round of reservations so you get a bit more than an hour to eat, which was plenty of time for us. Service was friendly and the space was cozy. This was one of the best meals we had on our entire trip - do not skip this place. It’s a cozy little restaurant so I’d recommend making a reservation (or showing up right when they open) to make sure you get a table. There wasn’t anything we didn’t enjoy out of the 5-6 dishes we ordered, but the fried squids and aubergine with yogurt were our two favorite dishes, and potentially enough to get us to fly back to Lisbon for. We just stumbled upon this small restaurant close to the Train station. Everything we ordered was delicious. The staff were really friendly, some of them have to sit down next to you and take the time to explain whats on their menu which was really helpful. The only thing that I didnt like is how limited the space is inside the restaurant. The space was too small and we have to share the table with two other strangers watching us eat. Being a rather small "hole in the wall" spot, we had booked a reservation, 3 weeks earlier, and was given a 21:15h slot on a Monday night (closes 22:30h)! It was one of the best meals of our trip! As may be seen, their item prices barely exceed EUR20, providing affordable quality food to a growing youthful clientele. We picked off the blackboard the mandatory Pasteis da Bacalhao, slow braised OxTail, grilled Octopus, Salad, rough-chopped Beef Tatare, Bifana, Calamari Frito (lulas fritas), downed with a white wine from Alentejo and a red wine from Douro. We came to Sal Grosso upon the recommendation of a friend, and making reservations was definitely needed as the restaurant is tiny! Menu is written on the wall - my friend and I shared a pitcher of white sangria and it was so delicious, refreshing, fruity. Definitely the best white sangria I have had. For food, we started with the duck liver mousse, the octopus and sweet potato, and the pork belly salad. Flavours were delicious, and all the plates were nicely balanced with richness and acidity. Amazing food and service! Our favorites were the octopus, pork cheeks, prawns, pate, and swordfish (we were two people, and probably ordered enough for a small family because everything was so good). The taverna itself is quite intimate inside - we ended up being seated next to a lovely couple that was also from Canada, and had great conversations with them all night (although there were also shared tables where couples dined individually, it is totally up to your preference). Had a reservation, fun service with nice waiters. They make their own juice so I had a nice spicy, minty pineapple juice I was obsessed with. We had 5 tapas plates and liked almost everything, only the pork belly we realised we didnt like (in general not just here). Would recommend the baby octopus, the cornbread for sure!!!!!!, and my partner loved the oxtail and the chocolate mousse. We reserved near the end of the night so they offered every table a shot of their homemade liquor to celebrate which was a nice touch. Definitely recommend. Make a reservation two months ahead if possible! This place has the most amazing food, highly recommend the pork cheeks. It was reasonably priced and great service. We ordered half of the menu and I wish we had room for more because there was so many other things we wanted to try but didn’t have room for. Standouts for me we’re the aubergine w/ smoked yogurt (so good we ordered it twice), the shellfish rice w/ the catch of the day, smoked pork belly, octopus salad, and the sweet potatoes. Taberna Sal Grosso 18 people seating and book in advance as no walkins. They have the menu of the day on the black board. I sat for an extremely long time for my food and then realized that the food is served by course the drinks are first then the starters and then the main course. I am not complaining as this looks like their system. So next time i will go with the natural flow of the restaurant. Finally my better half got her dish shellfish rice with catch of the day lovely flavors of lime and a slight hit of spice the broth with it went very well. My boar burger was delicious with a slightly sweet brioche bun caramelized onions the boar was a bit on the salted side. The server told me the meats take long to cook that is why the delay. The ox tail was a dark meat and super moist and fall of the bone. We ended our meal with another starter the fried squid wich was perfect with a squeeze of lime. They even gave us there house sauce they make with mango two different chillies and there secret spice mix. I give this place a 10 out of 10 friendly staff and clean. Nice hidden spot with menu written on the board which you know is legit. So far one of my top restaurant in Lisbon for price and quality of food. The grill octopus with sweet potato was the best so for which great texture of octopus and sauce was amazing. At the end of the meal they serve me a local pineapple liquor that they homemade. Great experience overall. Do note the small size of this spot. Location is great as you can visit alfama after meal here. Easily the best food we had in Lisbon, so good that we visited twice. We ordered mainly the seafood dishes. The waiter was incredibly helpful as I don’t eat dairy, he spoke with the kitchen and guided me through the menu. We ate in various places around Lisbon, this was the nicest yet most affordable. The best meal I’ve eaten in Europe= the Octopus w/ Sweet Potato. Truly incredible dish, next level, tender + crispy octopus meat over a vinegar + pepper sauce along with some soft sweet potato purée. The vinegar of the sauce was subtle at first but balanced the sweetness of the potato and the meat of the octopus perfectly. The diced tuna was delish as well, the tuna was high quality and slightly cooked with red onions and citrusy sauce, highly recommend Cod fritters were great appetizers, flaky, soft on the inside but crunchy on the outside, and well seasoned w/ a yummy mayo based side sauce. The garlic prawns were okay, interesting garlic based citrus sauce but the meat of the shrimp was tough not tender, always disappointing when shrimp becomes tough with overcooking. Would recommend steering clear of the oxtail, really tasteless and overly fatty/oily. I love a good fatty oxtail but this was not it, excess oil/fat would have worked with a strong flavor pushing through but it gave me nothing. We would want try the pork cheek + the smoked pork belly next time 5 stars 100% because Cooled red wine, Duvalley, was delicious as well! Absolute perfection. The taberna is quite small with just a few tables so definitely do a reservation beforehand. We had a bottle of white wine and sparkling water, octopus on mashed sweet potatoes, braised eggplant/aubergine, oxtail, pastal de bacalhau (croquettes), prawns in garlic oil and for dessert, passion fruit creme brulee and the banana bread. We felt, along with the couple who sat beside us, that the server suggested one dish too many. She was even asking if we wanted any sides to go with it which the other couple unfortunately took her up on it. Brother said if he were God, this would be his restaurant 🤷‍♀️ Would definitely come back with more people. Show up on time with reservations as proof, as they turned many away who tried walking in. Owners were so kind to let us in even after being two hours behind schedule (long story). Park by the station (by Military museum) just down the road directly from the restaurant as google maps diverted us a bit farther, which delayed us further by 10 min. Food comes quick, hits the spot, and definitely get more bread to soak up the delicious flavours. The tuna is a must - try! It’s lemony and perfect with onions. P.S. Creative and tasty food. The concept of this place is a modern/ contemporary take on Portuguese food. I personally really enjoyed the cod but the oxtail that was the most popular in the reviews didn't hit me as the most creative dish so you can pass on that. The cod pastry was super duper crispy and will made and tasted pretty authentic in my opinion. The sear tuna was tasty but the flavor profile wasn't as well balanced. I ordered the mashed sweet potatoes with the oxtail and I would recommend you to do that if you do order the oxtail. The mashed potato was a mixture of both sweet potato and something else. A cute place with great atmosphere and slightly open kitchen. Perfect for an intimate date night or a cute little brunch place. Tasty! As all other say, make reservation, they are super busy and for a good reason! I had to stalk them for couple days but space opened up. Best if you come with couple people with you to try couple things, I was by myself and opted out for Aubergine with smoked yogurt and pork cheeks (but checked out other dishes and they looked amazing too). What can I say for this taberna? My boyfriend booked a table and when we arrived I couldn't imagine how tasty all the dishes would be. We ordered octopus, cuttlefish, cod, pork belly, beef tartar and french fries. Everything even the french fries were Perfect, delicious. If I have to choose with big difficulty, I will choose octopus and pork belly as the best. The staff was really nice and polite. I have to say that this taberna was the best I have visited last year. From beginning to end this place was simply disappointing. We came here from a YouTube recommendation and it was nothing like it was portrayed online. The place is super cramped, poorly organized, and in general has a feeling of poor hygiene. The table we sat at was sticky in it’s ‘clean’ state which should have been enough of a red flag for us. But then service was also slow and disorganized. When the food finally came after a long wait it either barely edible or needed to be sent back to the kitchen. The pork cheek was tender but incredibly salty. The oxtail was impossible to bite through. It needed at least another 3 hours of cooking. And then the bone marrow that should have been simple came with rather mediocre bread and the marrow itself wasn’t seasoned at all so it was quite unpleasant to eat. In general I didn’t understand the vibe but maybe i caught them on a bad day. Unfortunately I won’t be coming back to find out. Incredible experience here. We showed up pretty late with no reservation. They not only made the effort to get us a table (asked another group kindly if they could share a table with us) but poured wine for us outside while we waited. That is excellent service. Cute little authentic Portuguese taberna, right next to Santa-Apolonia. Amazing modern approach on Portuguese cuisine. The Octopus and beef checks are delightful. The waiters are friendly, insightful in the food/wine menu and they provide great suggestions to the clients. Overall, for the price/food quality, this is one of the best restaurants in Lisbon and a must. Always remember to reserve in advance, since it is quite a small place. We ate in this restaurant during our stay in Lisbon, it is very little so I recommend you to book in advance for lunch or for dinner. The access is not very visible and it is near an Indian restaurant. You have to descend a short stair to reach your table. All dishes are delicious and very well presented. We ate a lot and we occupied the table quite long time so we were gently offered port wine with whole bottle and two shots glasses as a kind push to go but I agree with them. One of the best meals I've had in all of Portugal! The waitstaff were attentive and welcoming. They'll bring you a drink outside if you have to wait a bit (and you will, so make reservations). They will seat you with other people as it's a very tiny space. The menu is written on the board. Note that the prices are higher than previous years, but still very reasonable. One of the best meals I’ve had in Lisbon. I came around 12:15pm in a Friday afternoon and was the first in line. The ones with reservations were seated first and I waited just about 10-15 minutes to get seated after hostess made sure there was a free table (so yeah make reservation if you can; there are less than ten tables) The shrimp was pretty big and delicious. The summer salad and grilled asparagus were delicious! White sangria was memorable because it was so refreshing and good. We had a fantastic dinner at this establishment! The bread and cheese were a good starter. We then dove into the orange salad and the tomato-fig salad which were both delicious. For the main portion of the dinner we tried the tuna, chicken, baby squid, cod fritters, and sweet potato. We didn’t have a single complaint with any of the dishes. It is by far the best dinning experience, the food is delicious, the owners/chefs/servers/all-in-one-everything (Jorge and Luis) are the sweetest people, super friendly and helpful. Small pub-like restaurant in the hilly parts of Lisbon. Expect a waiting time (although we were told we would have to wait 1h30 minutes for a table, we got one after 20 minutes!) Unfortunately, most of the things we wanted to try were sold out but that still did not ruin the experience. The service is very attentive however, food might take a while to come out as we only witnessed one server on shift during a busy time. You MUST try the cod on a bed of lotus seeds: Very tender with all sorts of textures: crunchy from the lotus seeds, fall apart tender from the cod. The orange salad was perfect as well! Great element of acidity that went well with the cod. Nothing special in the sweet potato chips - you can definitely do without it. Please avoid the Sangria too - not the best. We were told that to get a table would take 1.5-2 hours. We did wait for this long, because people raved about this place, and we lived not too far. It was good food; the ambience was first class; but I’m not sure if it is worth a 90-120 min wait... We had the ox tail, codfish cake, roasted chicken, diced tuna, and orange salad. The best part of each of these items are invariably their sauces/dressings. The ox tail has a fragrant red wine sauce; chicken, black pepper sauce; tuna has a garlic butter sauce. The missing piece is in my opinion the quality of the raw ingredients - they are just not what you would expect in a place with such good reputation and amazing culinary skills. Pedro is amazing. We were the last customers he entertained. He chatted with us, even changed the music for our sake. I am glad we arrived a few minutes before the restaurant opened, so we were sure to have a seat, although some places were reserved already. Within 20 minutes the tiny, cosy restaurant didn’t have any seats available anymore, and we can definitely see why. The host was super friendly and the food was different from the standard, plain meals you see in other places. It was like visiting the host in his own house. It was the last night of our two week trip in Europe and we were recommended to try this restaurant from our bike guide. We were pleasantly surprised that we could get a reservation (you must message them on FB) as we heard it is often booked up days in advanced. Wow, what a delicious meal and experience we had. Every different type of house brewed beer was incredible. The brewer (and I’m guessing owner of the restaurant) went above and beyond making sure we enjoyed our experience. This restaurant is an absolute delight! We tried the octopus and stingray. All the dishes were perfectly seasoned, fish accompanied with roasted potatoes.
