  This place is definitely a tourist trap. There was no menu outside so we did not get the chance to look at the prices before. As soon as we were seated they brought us bread, olives and olive oil to the table. Due to the small quantity we thought it was a free little greeting from the kitchen. In the end it costs 6 € which we did not know as we still had no menu at this time. A normal mixed salad costs 14 € and the salmon with some vegetables costs 26 €. In the end we paid 50 € for one main course we shared, a mixed salad, the couvert and a small bottle of water. Very outrageous for the simplicity of these dishes.   Friendly staff, beautiful setting, and VERY OVERPRICED. The food is not bad but nothing special either. Expect to pay ~€25 per dish for the same food and the same quality you could get in any random restaurant for €10-15. So basically you’re paying 2x per dish to eat average food next to the river in a nice garden. When I went there they didn’t have the menu at the door. And yes, it was a big mistake from my part not to insist to see the menu before I sat. When I sat and saw the prices I thought “it’s ok, it’s probably something nice”.   Great moment, we were struggling to find an open restaurant. We crossed the owner in the street and we found this gem.   I saw the mixed reviews and can only provide my experience. Everyone was very friendly and the outdoor area was a lovely setting for lunch. I was recommended a soup that wasn’t on the menu and it was very good. They asked me whether I wanted bread/oil/olives, it wasn’t assumed, and there was no service charge on the bill.   Tourist trap! As soon as we came, they gave us olives, bread and olive oil without us saying or ordering anything not knowing we will be charged. When we asked for the bill, we complained and they only took of olives. The food was okay but the full experience was not so. The wine was also bad, but at least he offered us his "homemade" port wine. Also, the bill was not invoiced which means that guy is also avoiding tax ehile giving us the full price.   We went to the Writer's Place by chance, as all the other restaurants in town were already fully booked. To cut a long story short, the location of the restaurant and the view over the Douro Valley are the best things about it. The food was simply awful, cheap ingredients, badly prepared. The wine was probably the cheapest you could get. However, as a guest you can expect steep prices that can easily compete with other high-priced but much better restaurants.   Just happened to walk by with my family and decided to go for it. They have a lovely terrace around the back with beautiful views of the river. We ordered some wine and the Maronesa steak (comes with black beans and rice) for a family style lunch. It was DELICIOUS! The steak was tender, delicious, and cooked perfectly. The black beans were super delicious. The wine… the wine is always good in Portugal! There was more than enough food for my family of four. Yes, they put bread and olives and olive oil on the table without you asking - it’s what every Portuguese restaurant will do. If you don’t want them, you simply tell them no. The service was exceptional, and the owners and staff were very friendly and spoke with us for quite a while about their cows. The food is on the more expensive side, but we felt based on the quality and quantity, it was well worth it. Also, cash or MB Way payments only - no credit cards. The location is really pretty and the servers were friendly but the food is just not worth it.   The position of the restaurant is actually pretty good. Amazing scenery over the lands and river. But that is all! The restaurant itself is just a scam for tourists. The owner is a lady sitting in the corner and observing everyone. You can only pay cash or bank transfer. Before ordering you are served (even if you don't actually want or you are allergic as it was my case) with olives, oil and bread. For these you are charged 8 euros. The menu is just printed paper. Overpriced for what they offer. For example a piece of melon is 10 euros. A salad is €25 and the fish around €40- £50 per person.   Food was disappointing . We had the special fish of the day for 21 euros - it was not much better than frozen fish sticks. Skimpy and with a few forkfuls of cold rice. The vegetable soup tasted as though it was loaded with oil and had few vegetables. The deck is super beautiful so just be warned about the food.   Very, very disappointing experience. The 1 star is for the nice view over the river. The rest is worth nothing more than zero stars. Service is slow, and they had to ask 3 times what drinks we ordered. But okay, that can happen. But they dare charge 21 euro for a very basic tuna salad. That's just ridiculous! The pasta salad (24 euro) was not cooked properly; the pasta was hard and dry as a brick on the inside. When we complained about it, the only thing the waitress could answer was "Not my fault, it's the kitchen." And the manager's excuse: "This is how we cook. It was okay when it was served, and no other guests have complained". Sorry, madam, this is not how you should treat your guests. A simple gesture would have been enough to wash away the disappointment, but no, you had to stick to your point... Overall, we paid €52,50 for 2 salads and 2 drinks.   The Writers Place is a gem! The owners are a lovely and kind family and everyone you meet will endeavor to make your visit perfect. The outdoor seating has lovely views of the river with the scents of their fresh herbs growing on the deck. We had octopus and it was excellent. We very much enjoyed our meal.   Antonio was an amazing host! He made us feel at home. Very generous with tastings as well as bread. Dinner was also excellent, we enjoyed the salmon and the duoro fish. Very friendly staff and a delicious shared ham and cheese platter for starter but should have left it there as the mains were too salty and just not very nice.   I went here for lunch before my river cruise. The place has an amazing mountain and river view. I ordered the steak medium and it was cooked medium. The food was good and owners were friendly!   This was a wonderful little find opposite our hotel in Pinhão. We walked past it in the morning and verbally booked our table for that evening with the owner who was very friendly. The restaurant is no frills but feels like you're eating in someone's home which we loved. I had the best octopus dish which I've been talking about since! My boyfriend had a delicious steak and we washed it down with a lovely local red. The view from here looks amazing so I imagine lunch on the terrace would be great too.   What a gem! We stayed at the very nice hotel next door, but fell in love with the charm of this little restaurant next door. The ambience of the outdoor patio was charming and beautiful.   One of the most picturesque places I have had the fortune of eating at. We came towards the end of a lunchtime rush, so things were a little slow and a bit chaotic amongst the staff. We were there for 3 hours for our single course meal, but had nowhere else to be so weren't bothered. The house wine was excellent as was the food when it came. Just enjoy the view and the theatre.   This is an idyllic location for a glass of wine or a beer. The outlook on the river is lovely. I would certainly go back for those. And the hosts were very friendly. However, we felt the food was expensive for what it was. We ordered only a starter (chorizo) and the fish special to share as the mains were 22 euros or more. The chorizo was quite fatty, very chewy and just not that likeable. We love chorizo… but this was tough to enjoy. My husband still ate it but I just couldn’t. The fish was very fresh - battered - which was unexpected but we didn’t ask in advance. It was a good portion and tasted good. We did not drink anything or have the cover.   Absolutely lovely! Gorgeous patio on the river, fresh, local food, wonderful service and very kind staff. We made friends with the 2 resident orange cats and the ambiance was relaxing and chill.   Wonderful dinner! Was a bit hesitant because of some of the reviews, but our guide recommended the place and we’re glad he did. Antonio and his family showed us such wonderful hospitality and served us an incredible dinner (and, most rare for Portugal, a quick one!) of lamb, goat, and beef with all sorts of cheeses and wines.   I dined here in July 2022 with my former boyfriend. It was my most memorable dining experience from my trip in Portugal for four reasons. Firstly, the food was elegantly simple and delicious. Secondly, the outdoor terrace overlooking the river and vineyard-covered-hills make for a romantically unforgettable backdrop. Thirdly, the waitress, while friendly enough, struggled to keep up with orders and a lot of customers grew impatient with her. The charismatic and charming owners had to go into damage control - apologising for delays and confusion with affected customers. Despite this, I would recommend Writer's Place based on the reasons above - the delicious food, the stunning location and the charming owners. And finally, the fourth reason that made the meal so memorable is that I've now discovered that my former boyfriend cheated on me with the waitress...even returning to Portugal with my money to fund his affair. So, needless to say, Writer's Place was very memorable - what was my favourite meal in Portugal now leaves me with a bitter taste... Our "shrimp salad" cost 18-20 euros, so 50% more expensive than Porto seaside, despite this place being in the middle of nowhere. It was a lazy and unappetising effort - sweetcorn from a can, cold shrimp from the supermarket, some lettuce and onion. No care taken, nothing. All of our group had the same impression of their food - lazily prepared and hugely overpriced. This is a tourist trap - don't let yourself be trapped here.   A hidden gem with an incredible view! We stumbled onto this small, delightful restaurant on the edge of Pinhao and the view directly overlooks the river and mountainscapes. The feel is very intimate and homie and the staff are extremely friendly and kind. My wife and I shared the T-bone steak which was cooked to perfection. The rice and beans that accompanied were delicious in their own right. Additionally, we brought our 11 month old son, and the staff were particularly patient and accommodating. There was a bit of a wait for the food, which could have been a bit faster considering we had a young child. There were also quite a few flies around, as you are surrounded by fruit trees.   We sat down after most of the places in town were full. The place have a very good view from terrace but a weird and very not welcoming vibes. The place full of flys and we got a bread with mold to starter. People around were complaining about long waiting. We decided to leave before we even ordered something. One star for the view. Decided to visit the restaurant for lunch. Asked for a table in the shade but according to the waiter not possible since these tables were already reserved. Ordered drinks and food. Noticed that more guests dropped in without reservation who could sit on a table in the shade. After 45 minutes without being served our cold platter of ham and cheese I decided to leave as people who dropped in after our arrival where being served same dish already in 15-20 minutes. Asked the waiter for the bill that he refused to provide as he insisted us to go back to the table while he would sort out the issue. As I felt this restaurant being non-organised and almost us being cooked by the sun I decided to leave without paying.   We had already ate, but when we passed by this charming restaurant and welcoming restaurant owner, we couldn't pass up the opportunity, so we decided to do dessert and drinks here. Though we didn't have dinner, the menu looked great. We had a table right by the water on their patio, spectacular scenery, relaxing and romantic ambiance.   Our favourite meal and experience on our Portugal trip. We felt like we were old friends and Maria and Antonio were welcoming us into their home for a meal. The patio has amazing views of the river and vineyards on the opposite side. We were lucky to snag a table because it was busy.   Had lunch here and very glad we did as well. Got there early, which was lucky as we didn't have a reservation, had the table with an amazing view. Lady there was fab and very helpful explaining the menu fully as my diet has to be gluten free (celiac). I got the 4 cheese salad which was a starter (not the size of a starter), very good but would have been enough for two people, my mother had the fish and that would feed two people as well.   The lunch at Writers Place was the absolute highlight of our day’s trip to Duoro Valley. It was totally unplanned but a wonderful experience. Antonio was a charming host and we had the most delicious lunch with views to die for. High quality and authentic home cooking by Antonio’s wife and a genuinely warm welcome that made you feel special guests in their own home. All the other guests were so friendly and there was such a great bonhomie. Antonio’s own white wine was delicious and lunch was concluded, after almost 2 hours, with his excellent home made port. Can’t recommend highly enough and strongly suggest you reserve and then build your day around lunch. Really no need to book a tour - simply take the train from Sao Bento and arrive 30 minutes before departure to get seat on right side of train (for incredible views of valley - train ride is stunning). After lunch we had time for an hour’s boat trip from pier (probably no need to book in advance) and there are a few wineries within 5 minutes of train station.   We ignored the google reviews and went there for the view. In front is a woman who tries to attract customers, it made us feel a bit uncomfortable. Inside we asked for a menu, they said the had non. Which would be okay if there was any other possibility to see the prices (boards or signs). There wasn’t - and it’s obligated for restaurants in Portugal to outlay their menus. We asked for the prices and the owner wasn’t very accommodating, it felt like he obscures the prices.. or makes them up as he goes. So we had the “house wine” 5€ a glass each. (Wich is VERY expensive, no restaurant in Porto charges that much for the house wine. It’s normally around 2 - 4€ even in the touristic areas) the wines were okay but my glass (or the wine) had the smell of old deep fryer grease. I complained, leastways we only paid for one wine. The owner and the waitress partially ignored the regulation of eating a mask due to COVID-19. Sometimes they didn’t even carry a mask with them or they used them incorrectly.   We had a truly magical experience here. We stopped just to have a drink or two while we waited for nearby shops to open and ended up staying for much longer. The atmosphere and views are unforgettable, the food and wine was delicious, but the service was very special.   Typical tourist scam. This year I visited my country instead of going to a foreign country. I’m a patriot, I do love and support all Portuguese companies IF they provide quality services. 1) Great view but awful setup with the refrigerator machines in the middle of the eating area 2) Prices that were beyond reason (2€ for a small plastic bottle you buy at the supermarket) 3) Disgusting main course (I think it was frozen and not cooked in the moment) 4) Cheese + ham selection that were of bad/average quality coming directly from the supermarket (it was not “fresh” - 14€ you pay for it) 5) At the end, conveniently the atm machine was not working and they ask you to Transfer the money to an account of an Maria Almeida (that is a private and not a business account) Overall, there is a huge opportunity in Pinhão to open a decent restaurant. Sou um patriota, adoro e apoio todas as empresas portuguesas desde que prestem serviços de qualidade. 1) Excelente vista, mas péssima configuração com as máquinas de geladeira no meio da área de alimentação 2) Preços fora do razoável (2€ por uma pequena garrafa de plástico que compra no supermercado) 3) Prato principal nojento (acho que estava congelado e não cozido na hora) 4) Selecção de queijos + presunto de qualidade má/média vindos directamente do supermercado (não era “fresco” - 14€ você paga) 5) No final, convenientemente o multibanco não estava a funcionar e pedem-lhe para transferir o dinheiro para uma conta de Maria Almeida (que é uma conta privada e não empresarial) No geral, existe uma grande oportunidade no Pinhão para abrir um restaurante decente.   An amazing place to go for lunch or dinner if you are in the area, especially after a port tour. The owner (and rest of the staff) were extremely welcoming and friendly, and told us about how she came to Portugal from France when she was young after we asked where he accent was from. The food, though fairly expensive, was definitely worth the cost as it tasted amazing and meat was juicy as it should be. The owner also makes her own port/wine which you can taste and buy in the shop. Definitely would visit again.
