  Even though I'm not typically a fan of fish, I tried a piece from my significant other and found it delicious. I opted for chicken with fries, and the sauce was truly magnificent. This place was the first option we found on Google, and it definitely lived up to our expectations !   On a day trip around the East of the island from Funchal. The driver recommended another restaurant but I checked online and found Serra e Mal with a fantastic rating. I chanced upon the restaurant on arrival at the city/town. It didn't disappoint, the food was fabulous and the service quick with very friendly staff. Would recommend.   Cozy place, friendly service and quality food after a long hike. We ordered two vegetable soups, large picado with fries and local garlic bread. Fries seemed to be made of fresh unpeeled potatoes. The bread was very fresh. The best from what we had a chance to taste during our vacation.   It's a family restaurant with pretty good traditional island food and friendly staff/owners. I liked my meal and the ambience of the venue. The location is close to the traditional houses of Santana but just out of sight of the tourists, which is perfect.   This place is so wonderful. Came to Santana with a tour group, did not want to go to the restaurant that was recommended (reviews were not great). A couple of streets over is this little gem! Staff were so friendly, welcoming and funny! Food was great, and wine was very well priced. Wish we were staying in Santana so we could come back!   The food was very oily, we had octopus which was incredibly chewy. We tried two desserts, the maracuja cheesecake and the maracuja pudding,both extremely bad. They had both the same whipped cream with a table spoon on top of maracuja, definitely dissapointing. Would not recommend at all!   Excellent place. Definitely worth a 5 min walk away from the centre of Santana (with restaurants that might be good but look very touristy) to come to Serra e Mar. A small menu (as it should be) with very fresh ingredients done in a traditional way. The service is always done with a smile by both the man and woman who work here. We had the traditional Espetada and the Tuna, which were amazing. The tuna looks so appetising and well-grilled that it looks like a beef steak. The best I've ever had!   Our tour company stopped a few mins away and instead of going to their recommended place for lunch, I did what I thought was the smart thing and look at reviews of nearby places instead. This place was the best reviewed, and boy was it an amazing choice. Less crowded than the where all the tourist buses stop and much more importantly, the food was simply outstanding!! Best meal in Madeira I had. I ate the fish with passion fruit sauce and passion fruit mousse. Both were incredible!   Top top top! Such warm and welcoming service for a couple of tourists like us. Not something one finds too often on an island overrun with tourists. We were in the village as part of a bus tour, and the driver had recommended a different restaurant (with much insistence that no better or cheap option existed... Ya sure). We decided to google something which looked a little less catering to tourists and was well reviewed. It has the feel of a family run operation, in the best way. Many nice home made desserts available along with the excellent mains. We were so full after the mains and a side of garlic bread we took our dessert to go. The garlic bread is a must. The skewed beef was perfectly cooked to the requested medium finish. The dagger fish with banana and passion fruit sauce was also excellent. The house red and white were also good value. They have 1 liter draught beer which some people (the formed beer enthusiasts) may like.   After visiting Santana's Casas Tipicas, we decided to have our dinner at Serra e Mar and we have been very satisfied with our choice! We had the grilled octopus Madeiran style and the Scabbard fish with Banana and Maracuja sauce, and they were great and served with delicious chips and vegetables! Furthermore, the waiter has been very kind with us, letting us change the table which was at the sun and kindly describing the dishes! We strongly recommend!   Service was excellent. Our server was very quick, entertaining, informative and his English was excellent. The food was very good we had appetizers, a vegetable soup and the limpets(lapas) The main a shared full order of chicken cubed with fries(picado de frango), the chicken gravy was very tasty and the fries were homemade from the restaurant's own farm's potatoes (possibly some of the best I have ever had). The dessert we had was a chocolate cake tasty not too sweet and had a rich chocolate flavour, the passion fruit mousse was awesome the mousse was very thick and the flavour of the passion fruit was sweet and not over powering.   We came through the small town of Santana and had a late lunch at the Serra e Mare. We had awesome food for a very reasonable price. Taste and quality were excellent. I had Tuna steak and my wife Omelette with cheese and mushrooms. The folks were really nice. We lived our short stay and enjoyed the food a lot. The quality of the food wasn’t bad but the food was cooked in advance and reheated. The waiter ask us how the food was and we told him that we didn’t like it because of the reasons above, his answer was ok. Also they only have a few dishes, so I won’t recommend it.   We love this place! We went there during the lunch break of an organised tour and didn't opt for the place the guide was 'selling' for a pre-order. Instead, we checked maps and found this gem. When we arrived the place was almost packed with locals and members of the local police force were enjoying a coffee at the bar. We received a warm welcome and were lucky enough there was a table left. The suggestion of the day was a steak of fresh (catch of the day/night) tuna and we went all in for that and started with the Madeiran garlic bread. The tuna was fantastic and accompanied by a diversity (and quantity) of local preparations of boiled potatoes, heavenly polenta, beautifuly prepared string beans and great tasting (local) rice, the latter of which I'm not a fan unless cooked like this. There was so much food on the plate and everything was tasting so good, it was difficult to decide what not to eat. Though we had been looking for a more traditional cuisine for over a week in various places in and around the capital, this was the kind of encounter we were looking for.   The BEST food we had in Madeira. We stumbled across this bar coming back from the Pico and didn't have high expectations when taking a seat. We were so wrong. We are here the best meal of our week on the island (and we ate out A LOT). A bottle of wine, beautifully cooked tuna steak, steamed vegetables and rice + 30000kg of garlic bread for 18€....
