  This was our first time in Portugal and after traveling around for a week (Lissabon, Sintra, Lagos, Portimao) we found that this place actually offers the best culinary experience among all the other 4.5+ star restaurants we've been to! No matter what you order is going to be worth the money and you'll quickly fall in love with the way this family run restaurant creates these fantastic meals! Definitely among our favorites are the Ox-Tail as well as their signature Octopus and the Fish and Prawn Soup which was a special of the day! The service is super friendly and I would get anything they recommend. If that won't do it for you, the basil cream with the freshest strawberries surely will as they have been something I have never tasted before in my life and I sure won't forget anytime soon! We came here twice in 6 days and regretted not coming more often!   Casa Mateus is exceptional. I don’t think it would be an exaggeration to say it is perhaps the best restaurant in Sesimbra. The food is mind-blowingly good. We had the oysters, goats cheese, bread and olives and an ox tail croquette to start which were beautiful, followed by the polvo assado and the swordfish. The octopus was exquisitely tender and by far the best we’ve had in Portugal! The swordfish was recommended to me by the waiter because it was fresh in that day. He was right to recommend it because it was cooked so well, it was delicate and almost unrecognisable compared to some swordfish I’ve tried in the past. The staff were unbelievably attentive and friendly, we felt so well looked after and could see all the tables were receiving the same treatment.   In my eyes the place definitely deserves a Michelin star. All the dishes we've ordered were good looking, fresh and tasty. The floor service is as fast as good. We paid around €100 for a dinner for two including a bottle and two glasses of inexpensive wine. The portions weren't large but it's not the case for a criticizing. A prior reservation is needed although we were able to book a table the same day just three hours before.   Nice place in the middle of the tourist area of the town. The food is not the usual good home made food of Portugal, but in a good way. It is very creative and tastes great. My wife had the shrimp and calamari moqueca and I had a nice grilled fish fillet (melro) with a seafood sauce and mashed sweet potato.   We read such great reviews about this place we had to try it on our recent trip to Sesimbra. What can I say...the food was awful. I had the Thai green curry with prawns. Why they decided to call it that is a mystery, it bears no relation to Thai food. There is not a trace of spices or heat in the sauce which is bland and tasteless. I had wrongly presumed the prawns would be shelled, they weren't, which was very messy. I removed the head of a prawn & saw red fluid - don't know if it was brains. My husband's choice of dessert was off so they recommended a local pudding, telling us wonderful things about it. That turned out to be a boring looking little pud that tasted of nothing in particular. On the positive side our waiter was charming and the atmosphere was good, we ate outside.   Tucked away in a back street near the beach front, good food and friendly service. I can see why it's so popular with tourists. Definitely make a reservation because I watched many interested diners without a reservation end up having to wait for a bit for a table to free up. The oven roasted octopus had a spin on the more traditional preparation of polvo à lagareiro, with the addition of roasted red bell peppers and large slices of leek. The amêijoas de bulhão pato were solid but not necessarily the best I've had (likely needed a higher quality olive oil). But the star of the show was the basil mousse with strawberries for dessert, well balanced flavours and not overly sweet.   This was amazing! One of my family’s favourite restaurants we tried in Portugal. The octopus was SO soft and this place did not disappoint. We also tried the oxtail which was delicious, the strawberry basil desert, clams & mussels! We did make a reservation beforehand and would recommend doing so!   Loved the dinner here. The octopus was my favorite - so tender and creamy. The oxtail was also delicious. The clams were also great - seasoned well. Green curry mussels were also delicious - sauce was different in the best way. Very light and refreshing. We ordered the caldheira, but they didn’t end up serving it to us (did not come out right).   Food could be better served with small portion in comparison to previous years. Octopus in particular very tasty but the portion was just not enough. Overall taste was good although it lack some salt in potatoes in my opinion. Service is super friendly. I will give it a second chance.   A true gem of a restaurant, instantly going to our best-of and must visit&repeat list in Portugal. Only a few restaurants hit all the marks, and this is one of them. For starters we had the amêijoas and croquetes which were both amazing and rich in taste. Mains we had the octopus and codfish and were both brilliant. Go for the octopus if you love it, if you want to try something different and original the codfish is a great choice. Desserts elevated the level of the meal a little further as the chocolate dessert was one of the best I had. The service was super nice. We felt welcome from the beginning to the end. Loved Sesimbra, and whenever I’m coming back, I am also coming back to Casa de Mateus!   Book a table — it’s busy in summer and seating is limited. We sat outside on the deck under the umbrella and our server was great. His service was quick, knowledgeable and his English good. The main attraction for us was GOOD & FAST service because we had a little hungry 17 month old with us. The rose wine was a winner! Ask the waiter for a local recommendation as they know the food from the less good vino. The oxtail was delicious — a definite must-try. We really enjoyed our meal and will be back next summer.   Happy we found this place. Such a warm welcome. We sat outside for lunch. Waiter was able to give us good advice and we had a great meal. Mussels and a dish with grouper. Well presented and very tasteful. Also the deserts were fantastic, we had basil mousse with strawberries and a chocolate caramel cake. Homemade. We sat outside, nice little terrace and our table had ocean view. As the whole bank system was out of order we couldn’t pay. Didn’t have cash with us and ATM out of order.   A fantastic restaurant! As a person who doesn't usually enjoy seafood I was stunned by how amazing everything was. In addition the staff was friendly, cheerful and professional. Even during a busy time they were quick to help everyone. One of the few best restaurants I've been to in Portugal and would definitely come again. Simply exquisite!   Came highly recommended by friends and we were so pleased we had listened. Celebrating our anniversary, we couldn't have made a better choice. That the food was superb was not in doubt. Enough variations on the menu to suit my partner who is mad about seafood, and me being more of a steak man. What really made it for us was the friendly, humorous and very attentive service.   Did not live up to expectations. The swordfish was nothing like described in the menu. We were looking forward to the octopus but that was mediocre in preparation.   What an awesome restaurant. Whilst they serve some of the typical Portuguese seafood dishes - prawns cooked in garlic and oil, clams, razor clams etc. They also serve some more complex and interesting dishes as main courses (the Octopus was the best we ate in Portugal and the Brazilian prawn and rice dish was excellent). The chocolate and peanut desert is an amazing end to a meal as well. Perfect service and just as great sitting outdoors as indoors. We went back for a second meal it was that good.   We tried different dishes including Caldeirada for two, swordfish and fresh codfish. All of them were nice and the caldeirada was easily for three and had a nice variety of fishes. It is recommended to book a table if you don't want to wait and just one table that has a view to the ocean because the restaurant it's not in the main street but a parallel one.   We ordered the food whilst waited to be seated which is a plus point. Lovely and tasty meal however one the options ordered "Caldeirada de Peixe" seafood stew could have been served with more fish. Very good deserts. Good wine options. In terms of service, was good overall but for a restaurant of this level you do expect staff to ask how we are being served which has not happened.   We came here as yesterday we had a really nice dinner in O zagaia ( they share owner) and was as good or even better as we expected. Quality of food and price are amazing, but must say the 2 best things of Casa Mateusz are desserts ( I ate a chocolate- caramel cake with banana ice cream, like a best banoffee ever ) and service, that really makes a difference!! Is a busy place, so making a reservation is recommended!   A extraordinary place in the middle of the vila. The menu is not extensive so they only focus on great dishes, so all are of excelent quality. The entrees we recomend the Rabo de Boi. For main dishes the green cury and the mero are extraordinary. For the desert the chocolate and banana are in par. Since the restaurant allows reservation, and are recomend, since the place is always full, request the top table outside, as it is the only one you can see the see. The wine choices they have, it shows that they know their wine, not expensive choices but all with high quality to price ratio, quite refreshing nowadays.   I m one of the people who isnt fond of this place. The people were friendly but inside the restaurant it smells like dog. So we moved outside. The seats are uncomfortable and the table moved the whole time. The bread was delicious but the butter hard. The fish stew was way too much for two people and it had hardly any taste esp the fish.   Amazing meal. Most delicious octopus of my life, roasted and so soft. Shrimp to start was so sweet, and green curry was perfection. Need to make a reservation as was full all evening.   Great food, great wine some of which you won't find if you get too far from the area. Family owned and it shows, they are intimately involved in the business, they make sure that all of their customers are treated well. Was in Sesimbra for 3 days, ate their twice, only repeat restaurant on a two week trip. Would highly recommend.   We go there by chance. This place is Well known and there is always people. My advice for having a sénat, is to come at 9pm or later. We waited only 5 min. The boss is very Nice he speaks portugese and french, some words in english. Staff are Nice. The food is great. I chose a meat (you have meat and fish choice) and my friend fish. The place as such is lovely but to be sure it recommends to make a reservation. Whereas many restaurants in the vicinity are half depleted, Casa mateus is full of life. Waiters explaining the background of the dishes and some history to it as yes, here you find traditional portugese cooking. Attentively filling the wine glasses and always having a sense of humor on board. Absolutely recommendable.   Make sure you call ahead for a reservation. You park about 200 meters from the restaurant but easiest access is from the waterfront. Tiny place, but very cosy with friendly service, excellent wines, and delicious food. The melted cheese (a tome of cheese heated in the oven) is spectacular as is the dessert with pear and ice cream. Not cheap but worth it. Go for a walk afterwards towards one of the beaches along the coast to the West (use a GPS).
