  The gate was open, we arrived around 6, sat down waiting for the waitress to come around for 15 minutes, then after giving food to others she asked us to leave because their times are not up to date at the gate (or online) and they were closed. She could have gotten us at least one drink or asked if we wanted to eat or drink. Never been asked to leave an establishment before.   Traditional cousine with one of the best view of Sintra, dining here is an experience. They also have tables inside just in case of rain or too much wind but we were lucky and got a seat outside. It was superb as was the steak my husband ordered. Paired with Portuguese wine and fabulous view, truly a memorable lunch.   Expect long waiting times, rude staff and added fees for nothing! Only one person was taking orders and seemed to (intentionally) ignore us. From the moment we were seated, right in the middle, we were ignored for over 30 minutes. 4 tables, even behind us, got served first. One person in our party got their food and dessert before any of the others got their food, having to eat alone. When we got the bill they added 2 portions of bread and olives, even though we had specifically declined them in the beginning. All in all, bad service and beware of their scams. The partial blindness of staff were amazing — people who were before us in the line were served, people who were after us in the line were served, but not us. We called for somebody to receive our order, but been responded “This couple are before you”, even though they were after us in the line. Do not recommend this place.   We arrive in the place due to its magnificent terrace. When we arrived the bar woman is extremely rude with us and tell us to wait for her colleague. Her colleague cannot answer our questions, nevertheless we take a seat. It takes 10min before the table gets cleared. We are sitting at the table for 20min without our order being taken. When calling the staff, they ask us to wait because there is only one waiter who can order. That waiter takes the orders of customers that arrived after us.   After a walk down the hill from the Pena Palace (much easier than the up walk!), the first place we saw was Dona Maria. Lots of tourists and a fantastic location overlooking Sintra old town with cooling breezes, so we didn’t expect great food but it was up there with the best meals in our 6 week holiday. Fabulous goat’s cheese salad and penne were both perfect and the pudding for dessert was just lovely. Plus 19th century paintings on the indoors dining rooms, it was really well worth the reasonable price. WARNING be careful because they bring two bread rolls and olives to your table (without you ordering them) and then charge you €5.60. My advice is tell them to take it away and don’t eat it.   Perfect! We enjoyed lunch here very much. We started with a brie+walnut salad, shared the vegetarian penne and steak + potatoes gratin, finished with pudim and creme brulee and cafe con leche. Everything was delicious. Service was wonderful. Prices were reasonable. The view from the terrace was spectacular. It rained as we were finishing, but the canopy was pretty effective.   Shambolic. My family and I were on a tour that gave us 2 hours to see Sintra, we waited 1.5 hours here for uncooked, bland, and otherwise forgettable entrees and appetizers. The worst of the worst was the duck, which was purple it was so raw. I’ve had rare duck before, but this was still quacking. The octopus was rubbery, bland, and served whole. The knives on the table weren’t sharp enough to cut through it. The burger was the only edible thing that was served aside from the cheese and meat we got as an appetizer, but the burger was overpowered by the cheese they put on it. We sent the duck and octopus back without touching them and they still charged us, too. All in all, avoid this spot at all costs…it’s severely overpriced, it’ll set you back 2 hours, and the food is atrocious. Buy a sandwich and enjoy Sintra if you’re on a time crunch.   FOOD POISONING!! Our whole table (3 people) had food poisoning after the lunch at Dona Maria (6.01.23) and we all had different seafood dishes. I ordered the octopus, my friends had seafood rice and seafood pasta. It was a disaster. 2 days of very nasty intoxication. My friend’s birthday was the next day and we had to spend it in the hotel next to the toilets. Do not recommend this restaurant to anyone who cares about their health. Whether it was spoiled ingredients or lack of hygiene in the kitchen, I don’t know. But I know that none of us can eat seafood to this day. And 2 days of our trip were completely wasted. SHAME on the restaurant that can’t serve fresh food. We didn’t eat dinner that day (cause we already started feeling a bit weird) so we are 100% sure the poisoning was after our lunch.   The view was very nice, but the food not so much. I had the shrimp penne with broccoli. The broccoli was boiled to a pulp. The penne was not al dente but also boiled too long. The shrimp were dry. If I weren't so hungry I wouldn't have eaten it. We also had a goat cheese salad which was pretty costly but not at all well filled - mostly lettuce with goat cheese and honey mustard dressing and 6 cherry tomatoes. Would not recommend.   Had a reservation for 19:00. Arrived around 18:40 and there was no one at the reception to welcome or take the customers to their tables. It took a little while to get the attention of one of the waitresses. Initially, there was only one waitress for everyone on the outside balcony. Ordered a Polvo a Lagareiro (octopus with olive oil and garlic). Waited for aprox. 10-15 mins, which is reasonably good. The food arrived right after the couvert, which was annoying (probably only to charge me extra for the bread & butter). The butter was warm and one of them was clearly stale, as if they were kept outside the fridge for a while. The food was bad: a lot of cheap olive oil and nothing else to season the dish. Not even salt. Could not manage to eat it all due to its generous size and dull taste. Spent around 35$ for the meal, the couvert and a pint of beer. The view is great indeed, but the food isn't good and the service is unwelcoming. A legitimate tourist trap. Won't repeat. Note: the only reason I can think of a justification for the 5-star reviews here is that these people are tourists and haven't tried portuguese food in other places. Gastei cerca de 35$ com a refeição, o couvert e um litro de cerveja. A vista é realmente ótima, mas a comida não é boa e o serviço é hostil. Uma armadilha turística legítima. Não vou repetir. Nota: a única razão pela qual consigo pensar numa justificação para as críticas de 5 estrelas aqui é que estas pessoas são turistas e não experimentaram comida portuguesa noutros locais.

The restaurant claims best views in town. You can see from the photo that the views are mediocre, to say the least. More importantly, food is borderline edible. And on top of all that, they will charge you for the appetizers they bring on their own, without you ordering them. You know, bread and butter you commonly get as a starter, on the house? Not in this place – so watch out for the check. There are several great restaurants in Sintra just few steps down the road in old town – Dona Maria is just not one of them.   I am very upset with this restaurant because I had a gift voucher reservation (booked 13 days before the date), to a special occasion. 3 days after doing this reservation, I received an email from the restaurant saying it is not possible to receive us that date, suggesting booking for the next month... It is very inappropriate because the restaurant is fully responsible for updating the availability of the reservations in this partners website (Odisseias). They just want to receive more money and they expect more clients during this season so they don't care about voucher clients at all, that's the only possible interpretation. I have all the emails to prove this situation. Also they brought us olives and bread as starter courtesy of the house but in the end they added this as part of the check .   Seriously don’t bother with this place. There’s a great view, but that’s the only positive thing I can say. Received the food and it was inedible. I have never in my life sent away food, despite how bad it may have been. However this was unacceptable. I ordered a toasty that was served on soggy white bread. The bruschetta was also on soggy, thin bread and simply had melted cheese and a few bits of old looking tomato. When I sent away the food there was no effort on behalf of the staff to make amends. When we went to pay the bill, they insisted we pay in full despite the fact that we could not eat half of what was served. When we calmly questioned them about this, they threatened to call the police. Awful service and even worse food. Don’t waste your money here.   Great place to have lunch after visiting the Quinta Da Regaleira. If you are lucky to find a parking spot at the Largo Ferreira de Castro, just across the street from the restaurant, you are about 10 min walk from the Quinta Da Regaleira and on the way back just get in and have lunch before getting your car. It is also close to the famous Piriquita Pastry (5 min walk). Dona Maria food is great quality and the service very good. We will definitely go back.
