  A very comfortable portugese style bar with an Irish welcome! Great selection of food for the evening menu. Good value for both food and drinks. Music seems to be both Wednesdays and Fridays so worth booking a table in restaurant. Gary Vesey played on Wednesday...excellent entertainment! Looking forward to visiting again!   Never thought we'd spend so much time in an Irish bar but this is a goodun. Lovely sunny location for an evening drink, good food (we ate there twice), showing 6 nations rugby, live entertainment - all in a calm, relaxing atmosphere.   We arrived in Tavira from Fuseta last week , because it had started raining, we nipped into TBA Irish pub, had a fantastic Sunday dinner, a couple perfect pints of Guinness watched the rugby, the service was amazing, for me Sunday afternoon could not have been better,after three weeks in the Algarve. We revisited on the Wednesday evening had fish and chips, saté, with live music Gary Vesey, another really enjoyable experience. I saw the negative reviews about the service...and was about to agree with them.... its hard to make eye contact with a server....and getting them to a table does seem to take a long time... but most of the patrons are very Anglo... and the servers are very...Portuguese! The fish came out fast hot and crazy tender! Really good. Order bottles of beer because the glasses aren't frosted and the kegs aren't that cold. The beer got warm fast and it's January.   Found this delicious restaurant situated right beside the river in downtown Tavira! We had the garlic shrimp and mussels…the best I’ve ever had!!! We also had the goat cheese with honey drizzle, all 3 items were the perfect lunch combination! We sat right beside the river and could hear someone playing the violin on the bridge creating a beautiful ambiance as we ate, it made for our first experience of Tavira perfect!   An OK meal on the Tavira riverside. The food: starters and mains were very nice but disappointed with desserts. The cheesecake was lemon mousse squished into a glass with a digestive biscuit crumbled into the bottom. Service was terribly slow, even for a leisurely lunch we had to beckon the staff to be served for every interaction. Shame as it spoiled things.   Super unfriendly staff...no one smiles, waitress ignored me multiple times at the bar and walked around me as I was trying to order a beer, like I was invisible. Place was not busy at all to warrant that snobbish behavior. At least the pints are cheap and the outdoor seating has a nice view. Won't be eating here, other places will want my business.   We ate here at the startof our holiday, as it was recommended by family who live in Tavira. It was great. However, they are advertising gluten free items but saying the "oil is hot enough it burns the gluten away in the chips". Deapite this wrong information I had the chilli and rice and it was delicious. I am Coeliac as well as my 5 year old, we were both fine. Family had burgers and chips and said it was fabulous! Atmosphere is great, service was good, the place was clean and tidy. I would return again if I was in the area.   Had to sit inside bar area due to rain. Bar staff was very surly. Poor service. Had the Sunday roast beef that was overcooked and dry. There was vegetables and mashed potatoes. Yorkshire pudding was to be included, but roasted potatoes were served. My partner had an overcooked hamburger. Not the best in town!   Stopped here to eat lunch today, and sat at one of their nice outdoor tables. Was very busy and the service was a bit slow, but no complaints as it was very nice and relaxing sitting just watching everyone walking by while we were waiting. I got the beef burger and chips. It said on the menu that the burger was homemade and it must definitely was. Really nicely cooked patty with good flavour. Slightly blackened on the outside but still juicy inside. Had loads of melted cheese and lettuce in and served in a really nice soft bun. Plenty of thick nice chips came with it. My wife had the ham and cheese toasted sandwich. Good size with plenty of filling on really good crusty bread. Very good value for money. Would definitely recommend the food here. Can get very busy - but if you are not in a hurry, that only adds to the atmosphere. Highly recommended! We asked for Mixed Couvert, which never arrived...... Also, water for our dog, which got forgotten about. Eventually, our food arrived, but was luke warm. We sent it back, Needless to say, with no apology from the staff. As we are local, we won't be returning. At least not for food, as this was not the first time we have been served cold food.   Awful experience here! Constantly asking staff for attention. No menu’s, no cutlery. When food / drinks were ordered had to chase staff more than a few times which is ridiculous when you have kids crying all night.   We thought that we’d sat down at the Portuguese place, next door - it’s Sunday and 30C++ so an easy mistake to make. We have a table by the river - view of some lovely palm trees and a couple of examples of authentic local architecture. A very short walk across from the town centre and definitely worth it. My Moules Marinière were really good. Not too heavy on the garlic or cream. I had a side order of “Steakhouse Chips”. The jury is still out. Nothing wrong as such but a tad dry. However, chips is chips, as they say, and they didn’t last long. My companion’s beef burger was described as enjoyable and properly cooked. The service was prompt despite it being such a blisteringly hot day. Not much life to the staff but that could be down to heat rather than their attitude to the job. The drinks and main courses arrived on time but the chocolate mousse took an age. Lovely setting and glorious weather so waiting isn’t much of a hassle. Cold beers and chilled wine helped passing the time, enormously. Next visit to Tavira, If I can’t find the place we were originally looking for - I’d come back here again. I didn’t go inside but it sounds like there’s a TV with a sports channel so it that could be a bonus if there’s a decent match on. All good.   They had live music on set dates which was very mellow and calming. Drinks are reasonably priced but for a gin and tonic, they charge the tonic separate. Food wise it was nice and at one point, they could not take any more orders due to high demand. They have a large space out the front and out the back inside to dine.   This pub is the go to place in Tavira. Great atmosphere and staff are fab. Food is lovely too had lots of meals here such great value but good quality. As I'm not a seafood fan this restaurant has lots of other options whereas many restaurants in Tavira don't. The garden area is a hidden gem too. Also go to see Gary vesey sing he is fab !!!   I've been here three times... it's a perfect place for me to sit and relax and write some things. The view of the terrace is brilliant, and there is plenty of staff, although not all of them pay attention. Sometimes, there is a big group, and that can be annoying with noise and just how they dominate the outside atmosphere. The other day, I had a couscous salad, and this was disappointing for that money. Most was just lettuce with just a bit of (old) couscous and no more than five chickpeas. Taste was also not good, when you can actually make a dish like this really sing with flavours. I may try another dish later, as I will be back anyway...   I recently visited The Black Anchor in Tavira and found it to be a decent spot to enjoy a drink and unwind with friends. Friendly waiter though, but it took quite some time (and some waving 😂) that he was taking our order.   Lovely location by the river. We had fish and chips with mushy peas. The fish was not cod and the slice of fish was very thin, only a few, max 5 mm thick. The chips were not friedling enough. The dip sauce and the mushy peas were good. But all in all, the sun was shining and the location good so we ordered an extra glas of wine and Guinness and enjoyed the weather.   Tavira is brimming over with British and various Expats, so where better to have an Irish pub. I was invited there for a traditional English Sunday lunch and after enquiring as to how the beef would be cooked, was assured that it would not be overcooked, as per school dinners and retirement home meals. The kind and fairly bossy Irish waitress (or waiter person for the P.C. mad) even went to the trouble of marking the order with a large R for rare. What arrived looked like it had been left on a barbecue overnight. Seating was limited and we were given a table next to some people with one aggressive and seemingly uncontrollable dog and another dog without a lead who begged at adjoining tables.   We were recommended this place for the food. When we arrived there was live music, so the outside was heaving. We went somewhere else to return later. After the music had finished, and the crowds outside had started to dispersed we grabbed a table inside. At first service was intermittent, and we managed to order food and have drinks. The food was excellent, and of great quantity. Unfortunately they set a karaoke in the corner, luckily we were out of there before it started. Definitely try the Baileys tiramisu.   Lovely spot, ok British pub grub but agree with so many others, the service is woeful. The staff on during the day would win gold every time if avoiding customer eye contact was an Olympic sport. On our last visit (early Nov) we visited at 15:30, over half the tables were empty and 4 staff were on and still we struggled for service as did others sat near us.   After having such a wonderful time at the Black Anchor 8.5 years ago during our wedding …today was a different experience! For our wedding we spent 3 days in April 2014 as great customers of the place with our 80+ guests enjoying the comforts of brilliant Irish hospitality in Portugal.   Great spot on a Wednesday and Friday there’s an Irish singer who is top class also two staff that I wish I got their names the Scottish girl that seems to manage the place will look after you all night and the Romanian tank lol that is an absolute gentleman made our holiday.   Really nice view over the river, we wouldn't normally choose somewhere like this to eat but a lot of places were full or closed. Food was OK and enjoyable but I got the worst food poisoning I've ever had, I'm pinning it on this place as it was the only meal I ate that was different to other peoples in my group. I am still suffering 2 weeks and 1 hospital visit later. I had the hummus (which was definitely not hummus, didn't seem to be 1 chickpea in sight) the goats cheese and the chicken wings, which were all from the tapas menu. I'd avoid if I were you.   Extremely disappointing. Service was extremely slow. No one ever came to the table, we had to call staff over every time. Drinks took over 30mins to come out. One of the starters and both our mains came out together. The mains were sent back and was told the other starter was on its way. No cutlery was brought out, I had to go and find some. By the time my wife had finished her starter mine came out so I sent it back as it was too late. Sat with a empty glass I couldn’t order a drink as the staff move around and you can’t get their attention. Quiet a few tables walked out after getting no service. Both our mains were then brought out, very clear they were the same meals and had been sat under a lamp for the last 30mins. We sent the tuna steak back as the sides were turning up from it been under a lamp. My gourmet burger and chips were dry and not worth eating. I ate the beef and left the rest. The staff adjusted the bill accordingly. Another large table we’re having g the same experience and refused to pay for anything. The manager apologised and recommended a take away restaurant to everyone. The place was a joke. Not the Portugal experience. Only went there as most places are closed on a Sunday.   Been coming here for the past few years and I would have highly recommended to all! I'm not the one to give out bad reviews as I don't like to impact business but unfortunetly this place needs a rocket up the ***. Came here for a long weekend and the service is just diabolical! It's super busy and when we did find a table to sit we had to wait a very long time to even be noticed! Once seen too...you are forgotten and left high and dry. Food is still amazing and tasty! You are better off going into the bar and ordering and paying for your drinks as this is much quicker. This was a great establishment and just a great shame its going down hill. Clearly they can't handle the clientele and are understaffed! Poor service! P.s the older lady who only works in the bar (quiet section) is rude and needs a reality check!   Had Sunday Lunch in lovely setting beside river. Had Lasagne which was very nine. Unfortunately having not eaten anything else that night, the next morning I awoke to stomach cramps. The next day things got worse and I had severe diarrhea. Had to go to pharmacist to get treatment. Two days later haven't eaten anything and taking medication. Totally destroyed my five day holiday.   Food was decent but nothing to write home about, the fish and chips were nice. The buffalo wings were tasty but they shouldn't be sold as "buffalo wings" because they don't come in the hot sauce that they're supposed to, the carrot and celery sticks that came on the side were really dry and old looking. Nice location next to the river. Some of the staff seemed a bit out of their depth when it got busier, the attitude of one was quite abrupt with other customers, especially those that didn't speak English (not ideal when working in Portugal!). Our bill had nearly €10 of drinks that we never had added to the top but that was at least dealt with graciously.   Few other options nearby are open, and health issues meant food was needed quickly. The location is beautiful and sunny, so this was our choice. Long wait after arrival to order at the table outside, then after our cover of bread, carrots and olives arrived, a very long wait after ordering for the food to be served. The salads we ordered were good, but the order of baby clams was all shells, no bread, sauce, salad or veg included. An emergency replacement toastie was ordered, and complementary wings were brought quickly. The food when it arrived was lovely, and problem items were removed from the bill with no hassle.They need more staff so those working don't get overwhelmed.   This is my favourite spot in Tavira. Irish Bar is very well located. In front of the Gilão River. But what I really love is the spot they have behind. The lights in the summer nights. It’s just lovely. Nice food and good prices. The only bad thing is that the service in summer is very slow and they doesn’t give the proper attention to the small tables.   Best craic and lively entertainment This is a must visit when in Tavira - not your standard foreign irish bar - its actually ran by Irish people! Vinny & Joy are brilliant hosts and very friendly as are all the staff. There is seating in the cosy bar or out the front beside the river OR a beer garden to the rear where they can cater for private celebrations too. Always the best music too - shout out to Gary Vesey!! The restaurant attached serves amazing food and is highly recommended. Waiting staff are very friendly and ready to give loads of advice on menu if needed. The house wines are fantastic. Hope to get back to visit soon.   It was the worst place ever! first we had a booking made by phone call with the owner and when we arrived at the restaurant they told us there is nothing under our name but they managed to give us a table at the back of the restaurant even though there was an empty table claiming that it was reserved but nobody showed up till the end. second we ordered a red sangria we received a white one it was OK because the waitress was nice and excused herself for the mistake though the disaster was the beer glass! They used a dirty one to fill up the beer! There was lipstick on the edge! We were supposed to have dinner early as we were at the restaurant at 8pm although we received our food at 9:45 pm! I do not recommend this place as Tavira is a very nice city with lots of great restaurants.   Great Irish bar. Amazing atmosphere in this place with really good live music on Wednesday and Fridays from a really good Irish singer and guitarist Gary vesey. Food also really good with some British classics that everyone will love. Good service and really friendly staff. The out door seating areas in the garden and out the front also have really good aesthetics.   Our visit to the Black Anchor yesterday was, in some ways, quite disappointing. This pub enjoys a privileged location in Tavira, right along the river, with a large terrace surrounded by historical buildings. The atmosphere at night is beautiful, they have live music, and a wide following of faithful english speaking patrons. Was it not for the beautiful decor, you could be anywhere in London. Last night though, the waiters were scarce and harassed, few and far between. The first one was welcoming enough, bit our drinks took 30mn to arrive at the table! Then he proceeded to explain the daily special, which was roast chicken and.... disappeared. One hour later, nobody had taken our order yet. We were starving. We.teies to attract attention of anybody. An hour and a half later, we fi ally got someone's attention! Oir first waiter had gone, never to be seen again, and the new guy informes us that there was no daily special. We finally managed to order....... Food came almost one hour after that, and my chicken curry was accompanied with..... french fries, instead of rice as ordered...... there was no rice In the house, was I informed by a very rushed waiter. He simply didn't understand that some people so not eat curry with french fries..... Anyway..... to say that we are not in a hurry to go back there again is an understatement. Nosso primeiro garçom tinha ido embora e nunca mais foi visto, e o novo cara nos informa que não havia nenhum prato especial do dia. Finalmente conseguimos fazer o pedido....... A comida chegou quase uma hora depois, e meu curry de frango foi acompanhado de... batatas fritas, em vez de arroz como solicitado... não havia arroz Na casa, fui informado por um garçom muito apressado . Ele simplesmente não entendia que algumas pessoas não comiam curry com batatas fritas. De qualquer forma..... dizer que não temos pressa em voltar lá novamente é um eufemismo.

  We had to wait so long on a previous visit that we went elsewhere, but as this place is in such a beautiful setting near the riverside then we decided to give it another go. Our drinks arrived but it took over an hour for our food to turn up- with no feedback from any of the staff about such a long wait. Indeed if they were struggling to cope then we should have been informed of a long wait when we ordered. Not being able to order Fish and Chips where we live (in a quiet area of Spain) this is what we ordered and were looking forward to - what a mistake; the fish (certainly not Cod or Haddock or Plaice) was bland and wet - like eating mushy cotton wool! The batter was crispy though on the cusp of being overtones I wish that I had just ordered the chips and mushy peas which were fine, but an expensive way to eat these 2!! The young lads as staff were pleasant but seemed to lack an experienced boss keeping an eye on things. Won't be back to give this place a third chance.   Visited the Black Anchor many times with my husband family and friends, lovely setting by the river.   Stumbled upon this place more by accident but what a lovely place it was, nice selection of whisky's, great pint of Guinness, a 'don't mess with me' barmaid who is much softer than she lets on, live music in the form of a singer/acoustic guitarist and a really colourful audience, we ended up having a good dance and didn't leave until nearly midnight, of course I can't guarantee the same atmosphere every night but it is still definitely worth a visit.   Typical English food. We'll cooked and plenty of it. Tasty and fresh. Deco a bit dark and not enough internal lighting. I found it difficult to read menu!   The waiters ignored us for about 25 minutes before we could finally place our order. We had to beg him to pay attention to us, otherweise he would probably have ignored us for another half an hour.   Great place with a great atmosphere, the live singer was a nice addition. The place overlooks a river which makes it nice in the evening, but there are lots of mosquitos so make sure to apply repellant first. The food wasn't anything special. The cheese board was great with a nice selection but it only comes with five crackers despite having a mountain of cheese? We took the cheese home because it was excellent, but more crackers wouldn't hurt. The burger was a bit uninspired, the sword fish was dry and overcooked and the chicken cataplana lacked flavour and was a bit boring. But these lewdowns were forgiven by the nice atmosphere, it was really friendly and nice to just sit and relax there. We would eat there again.
