We had the sample banquet to try a bit of everything, food was good, better them expected. Only issue is was super dark, only candle light.   Two superb gastronomic evenings 😎 these 20 and 21 /09/2023 . Coming from Bretagne (Breizh ☝️) in France for a large Road Trip in Portugal , our 9th stop was in TOMAR 🤩 and we spent two evenings dining in " Taverna Antiqua " restaurant . OK , the decoration and the staff outfits are there to convey the medieval atmosphere. BUT, the cuisine, the kindness, the atmosphere, finally everything was so goooood and original. It’s not the “real” Portuguese canteen that we used to search for , but it’s worth the "detour" 😚 As proof, we returned to dine there two evenings in a row. A cozy atmosphere where the guests talk less than they enjoy their dishes 😉😊 Everything is said! We enjoyed the famous two-tier platter with an assortment of samples of almost all their dishes. The “dish” called “ROYAL FEAST” “Taste the Best that the merchant has to offer”. Incredible flavors and almost too generous meal and for two at price of € 30 ! The wine was okay and not overpriced. Truly a deliciously atypical stopover at any level . Bravo, we would like to give 6 stars for the meal, the setting and the service.   They have a bizarre policy where you can sit inside only if you order food so if you intrested in only buying the honey beer you have to sit outside. But outside there are only 4 tables and you aren't allowed to order the beer standing - only while seated. We had couple of beers they were okay, the service was really good.   The place is authentic and unique. We were like not eating here because from far away looked like a place that needed some LTC, but then realised it was a Medieval Restaurant. The ambiance is wonderful and the staff is amazing!! We had a wonderful time in this place. The food was not what we really like, but the presentation was really nice.   We stop at this tavern out of curiosity. They were serving mead and my son wanted to try it. We asked for a table, but had no reservation so we were given a table outside. I was sad, but most definitely understood the seating. The inside is quite interesting and very medieval (nice inside), but then again the outside was just plain. At least I got a seat. Now comes the bad. We sat and waited for 15 minutes or more before I had to call the attention of the waiter for our order to be taken. Unfortunately, every time we tried to order they were out of what we wanted. Even my son's Mead (the reason for coming) was out and then the drink order that was to replace the mead was also wrong. The staff we're generally not understanding of the issue and didn't pay much mind to us.   It was too hot inside. We ordered the lams meat which was a starter, that was a very tasty and good choice. Our main dish was the banquete royale, which is a mix of different flavors, we ate with the 2 of us but I did not felt full at the end and neither was I satisfied with the quantity of that dish (especially the meat). When I tried to order the lams meat again, it seemed that they took that personally, possibly because we did not completely finish the banquette. Another waiter came back and mentioned that they did not had anymore of the lams meat. Because we finished the dinner we were still deciding if we would go for a desert, but because it was that warm inside, I politely asked if we could change tables and move to one of the tables outside. I politely asked for his approval and in order to understand if there was enough space for us to move tables. The waiter rudely told me to check outside myself, instead of just double checking if there was enough space outside.. They now offer a set meal at 25 euros per person, with cold cuts appetisers. chestnut soup and sides (polenta cake, couscous, mushrooms). And then 5 main courses of all-you-can-eat which includes orange salad, vegetable and goat cheese pie, beef cooked in wine stew, codfish béchamel on toast and oven roasted ham hock. And finally finishing off with a trio of desserts - chestnut mousse, flan and blueberry tart. We were quite blown away by how good everything was. And to top it off, service was very attentive and cheerful, and the harpist played a killer rendition of Game of Thrones!   I enjoyed the place because it was unique and went along with the theme of Tomar. The service was nice and there was a lot of attention to detail regarding the decor. However, a lot of the things I wanted to try, they didn’t have/were out of. I ended up ordering the tempura asparagus, sautéed mushrooms, merchant’s cod, herb butter, and fresh OJ. I enjoyed the mushrooms and asparagus but did not like the merchant’s cod at all. It was a mushy mess and didn’t taste very good. The OJ also had ice so it became very watered down. I spent around 30€ total. If you want to sit inside, definitely make a reservation. I came during lunch a couple of hours before closing and was seated at the entrance rather than inside.   One of the very best overall dining experiences I've had in Portugal so far. The ambiance is obviously one of a kind, but not kitch or overdone. Service is super friendly and somehow among the fastest I've seen here. And the food was absolutely delicious. We're vegetarian, so we walked in with low expectations, but were very well treated between the bread, cheese plate, vegetable plate (kind of like a slightly sweet ratatouille on barley), peixinhos da horta, sauteed mushrooms and mushroom soup. We had the Royal Feast (Banquete Real) for 2 people, which included a variety of sample dishes from the menu, including venison, wild boar, chestnut sauce, polenta and other side dishes. There was a harp player in the dining room, which really added to the ambiance. Servers were very knowledgeable and friendly. At one point, I had to chase the servers down a couple of times. An unforgettable experience in a unique Knights Templar town. Nothing I can write will do this place justice. As soon as you walk in the door, you know it will be an exceptional experience.   In my life I have a few top meals and this was one of them. The honey mead was amazing! I had the goat cheese and spinach pie which was fantastic. The accompanying apple sauce was the a taste sensation with cinnamon, raisins and walnuts!! Dessert was cottage cheese and chestnut mousse! This was a creamy dream for my tongue. Not too sweet, smooth and so tasty. The atmosphere is great and they gave us a table with a heater and our little dog was allowed to nestle in under the table by my feet. There was a lady playing a harp and traditional music too. The staff were fantastic. I am trying to learn Portuguese and they were friendly and helpful. They have english menus, but I asked my waiter for his recommendation and he was spot on(vegetarian). The prices were good for a fancy evening out. Such a great evening.   I visited Taverna Antiqua for lunch and was really impressed with the setting. The restaurant is located near Tomar's republic square and has a really immersive atmosphere. We booked a table inside and were seated by candlelight. The sautéed mushrooms were a fantastic starter. For the main course, I opted for the wild boar with cloves and honey and it was great. Those who ordered the beef with witch sauce were also very satisfied. With regards to the drinks, they only have filtered water, which is probably just tap water. Additionally, the orange juice was really small for the price and full of ice. The service could use some improvement. One of the employees was quite arrogant. Additionally, the toilets don't use a lot of water, so the smell of urine can start to waft into the dining area, especially if you're sitting near the bathroom.   This was probably the best medieval-themed restaurant that I’ve ever been to!! Not only were the vibes great (the waiters were dressed as peasants and the tables were lit by candles), but the food was soooooo delicious.   Great place for dinner in Tomar. Food was different, healthy and very tasty. The soup was excellent, and so were the puff pastries and steak. The gnocchi was not the best, but definitely not bad either. The staff were super nice. The ambiance was great and not overdone for a themed restaurant.   It is not possible to describe this place in pictures or words. But if you like medieval fantasy THIS IS THE PLACE FOR YOU! The food is so so tasty. We got the goat cheese pie and ham hock, bottle of the house wine and amber ale. Everything was mouth watering. The cups/glasses for alcohol were very representative. So was the bathroom!! The gentleman who served us suggested that the serving for two would be enough for three and we could add any extra if we wanted. Having done a long journey to get to Tomar we were relieved to get lunch quickly but after 30mins waiting outside on the heat they came to tell us the kitchen was closed after all.. after that we found out most places close at 3pm in Tomar. If we had been told as soon as we arrived that the kitchen was closed, we could have found an alternative to have lunch in time. The last people ordered next to us 30 seconds earlier. They told us that other family were the last one for lunch. It was a minute before the kitchen close, true, a close call BUT I believe in client centered service and there a business can make a difference between being a ‘tourist factory’ or a cosy place where you enjoy being... right? The representations takes us directly to a funny conversation of two knights Order of Christ and to a discussion between a medic and a priest during the plague, for example.   A restaurant with a unique concept. Seems like you travelled couple of centuries back. It was nice experience, food was good. The service is a bit slow and personally as a not smoker I was annoyed by the guy sitting outside who was smoking as all the smoke was coming inside and we were sitted not so far from the entrance. I spent most of the night in the bathroom and a week later, my stomach is still sensitive.   Impressive how well they managed to make this restaurant fairly historically accurate. Everything is in medieval style from the candles on the table to the orders being written with ink and quill. It is a busy place and I think making a reservation is a good idea here but we were in luck. The game pie and spicy lamb were perfectly prepared, they had a lot of flavour. The drinks were also poured in medieval cups and the dessert, for me the cheese tart, were very medieval like. In general a very nice experience and really something to do when you're in the area.   This is a medieval style restaurant with very good food and atmosphere. We had the quail, spicy lamb, and game pie dishes. Of the three my favorite was the lamb! The other dishes were really good, but the lamb was just way better. Also the apple puree with the game pie was just ok, so that was my least favorite.   The restaurant is a choice because of the atmosphere, design, mood. I would not consider their food the top choice in town but it has gotten rather high reviews. I ordered the rabbit and my husband ordered a steak. We also ordered mushroom and fish egg salad for starters. I enjoyed the starters better than the rabbit. The rabbit had a rather 'wild' flavor that I was surprised at since I have had rabbit in other European countries without any issues. My husband enjoyed his steak but I would not have considered it anything special. Their side dishes were a bit odd in that most were composed of bread. My rabbit stew had two pieces of bread at the bottom that soaked up the stew. I would have rather had the bread on the side. We also ordered coffee and a sort of cheese pie. The coffee came with cinnamon sticks, an interesting touch. The cheese pie was just so so. Butter, olives, and bread are charged automatically and are on the table when you arrive. I suppose you could ask them to take them away and say that you do not want them but it seems a basic charge for this restaurant that is not always the common practice in Portugal. A so-so experience for me. For the price we paid, we should have had a bit better food but I guess we were paying for the candles, low light, the dress of the wait staff, and all the restaurant decor. Eu pedi o coelho e meu marido pediu um bife. Também pedimos salada de cogumelos e ovos de peixe para começar. Gostei mais das entradas do que do coelho. O coelho tinha um sabor bastante 'selvagem' que me surpreendeu, pois já comi coelho noutros países europeus sem problemas. Meu marido gostou de seu bife, mas eu não consideraria nada de especial. Seus acompanhamentos eram um pouco estranhos, pois a maioria era composta de pão. Meu ensopado de coelho tinha dois pedaços de pão no fundo que encharcaram o ensopado. Eu preferiria ter o pão à parte. Também pedimos café e uma espécie de torta de queijo. O café veio com paus de canela, um toque interessante. A torta de queijo era tão. Manteiga, azeitonas e pão são cobrados automaticamente e estão na mesa quando você chega. Suponho que poderia pedir-lhes que os levassem embora e dizer que não os quer, mas parece uma taxa básica para este restaurante que nem sempre é a prática comum em Portugal. Uma experiência mais ou menos para mim. Pelo preço que pagamos, deveríamos ter comido um pouco melhor, mas acho que estávamos pagando pelas velas, pela pouca luz, pelo vestido dos garçons e por toda a decoração do restaurante.

  Great ambience. Was looking forward to the meal. Unfortunately, the only thing great about this place is the ambience. Ok. And service. Service is good. Ordered a medium and medium rare steak. Was given a medium well and over well done steak. Both vey tough. (Actually ordered a medium well and medium. But they heard medium and medium rare. But the outcome was a medium well and over well done) Had the lamb chops. It was undercooked. Had to re-fire it. Was better after the re-fire. The bad lighting in the place, which may have started as a great setting, is in my opinion just a ruse so diner's can't see the colour of their meat. Considering the price and the ambience and quality of the meal, I'd say 2 stars is accurate. But I'm giving it 1 to even the overall score. 4.5 is way too high for this place. Also, the inside is in need of some proper ventilation. Price to quality (1 star) Price to quantity (1 star) Taste (1 star) Ambience (1 star) Service (1 star) Being satisfactory in any of the above would get them a star. So...They get 1 star for service. 1/2 for ambience (too warm) 1/2 for price to quantity Unfortunately, there's quantity but not much quality. And the taste not quite there. 2 stars.
