Exquisite. My partner and I had a gorgeous meal here tonight. We shared the bread with sour cream (like a smoked soft cheese, so so good), hummus & baba ghanoush to start, I had the smokey creamy ravioli for main and my partner had the seitan steak with creamy sauce and gratin, and we shared the Snickers chocolate tart for dessert. We got there, very excited for the meal and the interesting menu and the amazing reviews, the spot is -2 floor so we didn’t quite know how to enter, I looked at the hostess through the window for guidance and she looked at us in disapproval as if we didn’t belong in her fancy establishment. Look, this might be the best vegan restaurant in Portugal. I've come here time and time again. The starters are what drives me most to this place. The amazing vegan cheese board is a must and the petiscos portugueses board as well. As a vegan Portuguese living abroad, it's very easy to miss the flavours that I grew up eating, so even if there are Portuguese restaurants abroad, they don't have vegan options. This is the only restaurant that I've found that scratches that nostalgia and saudade of the food I remember but made vegan! The main dishes are also really good, I prefer some over others. And it's always interesting to see what the chef's suggestion dish is each time I go there. The location is refined and they serve plant based versions of the Portuguese classics. We had the 'sardinhas' and they were outstanding. It was a really nice place, especially if you are looking for a romantic dinner place. The price is a tiny bit over average but the service, the food and the place are worth it. The dishes are sufficient, you are going to have space for dessert. We asked for the calamari starter and one main dish each and it was delicious but definitely I could have eaten a bit more. This hidden away restaurant is a wonderful place to visit. Being vegan or vegetarian, it's sometimes difficult to sample traditional cuisines but Ao 26 offers a range of traditional Portuguese food. The food here is great, and my review does not reflect that. Before moving to the "new" location the staff were always friendly, however, this is sadly no longer the case. The person at the front desk is not at all friendly. You are made to feel like you are causing them a problem by being there! Best restaurant I've ever been to. It was my partner and I's anniversary so we wanted to go to a nice restaurant and found this online. We had to try as we're vegan and don't usually get to try the local cuisine. The restaurant looked beautiful and it was very busy when we got there. A sign it is well liked. We were esctatic to get a table. The service was impeccable as staff was very friendly and we got served very quick. The menu was great with many Portuguese dish options for starter, mains and dessert. We both ordered the francesinha, a layered dish with chips on the side. I would recommend to anyone if visiting this restaurant although I'm sure all dishes are good. For drinks we ordered the sparkling sangria with pomegranade and the Garrett cocktail. These tasted amazing. There was a great atmosphere in the restaurant and staff all seemed to be in a great mood and having a good time which is always nice to see. The bathrooms were very clean and nicely decorated. We ended up not ordering a dessert as the main meal was very filling but they had a vast array of delicious sounding desserts. 10/10 service, food and atmosphere. OMG we had the best time at this very cool, delish, a-bit-hypster restaurant. Firstly, there is a beautiful open kitchen where you can see how your food is being prepared. Secondly, service was warm and kind and professional. Thirdly and most important, the food was heaven. The concept is Portuguese food in a vegan version, and it turned out to be spectacular. We loved absolutely everything we tried. Order the Portuguese bord for starte, so you can taste more local dishes. We also had the "fish and chips" which was one of the best fish version we have ever ate; and a creamy soup with vegan chorizo. LOVED it. Wine was also fantastic, like everywhere in Portugal. After the reviews I expected a bit more of this restaurant..it looks really nice and luxurious. However, the food could had been better. We had the mixed starter for 19 EUR, the ravioli and the steak. The staff was friendly, but they added a beer to the bill which we didn't have. They removed it after we told them. Beautiful place and the food looks fantastic but didn’t really live up to the reviews for me. Tried all three burgers and none of them really did anything for me. Patties were soft and spongy, same for the fries. Despite the high price and high level place, it still didn’t come anywhere near a “real” burger, sorry. Same for a few of the other dishes we tried. Honestly, for all the great reviews, and how popular this place is, not that impressive. The atmosphere is beautiful. The service was fine, but nothing out of this world, it took my husband forever to get his beer. The food was so so. Certainly, there was a lot on the menu, but nothing that we tried blew us away except the dessert! We enjoyed much better vegan good in Lisbon, that was not as hyped, and more affordable. My husband had the ravioli, he said it was fine, but he didn’t really like that it was fried instead of boiled. I had the tofu, very fishy tasting, and I actually love seaweed, but something about it did not sit well and had a very other seasoning that I could taste except the seaweed, the greens that came with were very good and garlicky, the potatoes were boring-and I love potatoes, but they had no seasoning or satisfying crunch. We had the cuttlefish and sweet potato fry appetizers, neither of them were as crispy and flavourful as we had hoped. For desert we had the peanut butter pie, and crème brûlée, they were both excellent! After reading reviews and being recommended this restaurant, we had high hopes! Food wise - we enjoyed the food. The soup was absolutely delicious. The ravioli was good, and the tofu fish dish was decent. The desserts were delicious, but very rich! But I would say the prices are a bit too high for the food, also being in Lisbon. Overall, I would recommend trying the food for a new experience, especially as a lot of it is experimental The main area where we felt we were let down was the front of house service. The lady that was at the front desk was extremely impolite and unfriendly. We definitely felt like we were imposing / almost like we were not deserving to be there! Once we sat down it took a very long time to get served, and we had to ask the same lady to ask for a waiter. When doing so, she was also unfriendly, as if we shouldn’t be asking for something. Aside from this, we were served by a couple of different waiters / waitresses who were really helpful, friendly and lovely for the rest of the time. Which is why my overall rating is 4*. Do not skip this restaurant!! I don't even know where to start. It's been 6 months since I was in Lisbon and I'm still dreaming of this restaurant. If I lived in Lisbon, I'd eat here every day. It's one of the only restaurants that I ate at twice. The vegan steak made non-vegans drool. The tasting board was delicious. The biggest problem that you'll have is trying to figure out what you want to eat because the menu is phenomenal. Take your time finding it because it's a little bit hidden. You'll walk downstairs into an open patio area connected to the restaurant. The atmosphere is relaxed, upscale but not uptight. You can wear jeans and a cute top or dress up and you'd still fit in. Americans....if you miss a steak with steak sauce, bring it with you. There's no steak sauce and it's delicious without it but it's definitely an experience with it. Just a thought. The restaurant is nice looking and service was fine. However it was the worst food I’ve ever had in a restaurant, the whole table agreed. Except..I am very picky about vegan cheeses and the cheese board was really good! It should come with more bread though because it has a lot of cheese then everyone just gets one little piece of bread. Everything was downhill from there. The mushroom dish had soo much raw lettuce with no dressing or seasoning at all, the sauces were disgusting and it had piles of onion and cranberry sauce, just didn’t work at all. All the food was served cold as well. Ravioli is my favorite food and this was the worst I’ve had, a strangely sour taste, also cold and inedible. The seitan steak came with a cold, hard, sliced potato and apple piece that had no flavor. A lot of the food was flavorless or with the wrong taste, like why sour ravioli, and the wrong textures. It was really so bad. We could not eat the entrees and spent a good amount of money. (I’m a long time vegan so had nothing to do with that.) this is an incredible vegan restaurant in lisbon and definitely a must visit for all vegans! i was really wanting to try some traditional portuguese food while in the country, and i am so glad that i could at 26 vegan food project. the place feels very up market, with amazing attentive service and a very nice atmosphere. despite this the food is still relatively cheap (~€12-€15 for a main) and amazing quality. we got the seitan steak and the iscas, both of which were amazing. i wish i could eat here every day and will definitely be back next time i am in lisbon! I am so so so happy to have found this place. It was incredible in pretty much every way. The first thing you notice is the stunning decor, and then maybe second you get overwhelmed by having to decide from a menu where literally every dish sounds spectacular. Everyone recommended this restaurant so I decided to try it. First time I came here there was no available tables. Second time they were nice enough to seat us without a reservation. I highly recommend making a reservation if you want to eat here. We ordered 2 menu items. Maybe we ordered the wrong items. We had francesinha and fish and chips (Tofu). The tofu burger was overwhelmed with seaweed flavor. This is not a tribute the the original fish and chips. The chips were baked potatoes. The francesinha is the 3rd one I’m eating in Portugal and not the best. It’s ok. The best part of the dish is the French fries but this place gives you potato chips?! Quite a fancy restaurant with a nice atmosphere and good wine list. Quite pricy but big portions. The homemade vegan cheeses were amazing, especially the blue and the brie. The pineapple pickle was great but I was quite sad about the bread that came with it. It really let down an amazing dish. It was GF bread and was horribly dry and tasteless (I mentioned it to the waiter so hopefully they will change supplier or make their own better version). Hoping this is the same spot, as I’ve heard that they have 2 restaurants, but the one 1 went to interior looks different than the one on google review. Luckily the menu is the same! Well, now one of my favorite spots in Lisbon…I mean just look at these dishes! I started with a variety of cheeses then moved on to the Sietan Steak with Roasted Sweet Potatoes…and wow. Perhaps one the best versions of Sietan I’ve ever had. Definitely recommend, but remember to book in advance. I’ve visited ao26 lots of times and they moved location since I’ve last been. Although the place is a lot smaller and you’re more crammed in tables with others, the food is still devine. We shared the Portuguese starter board, the tofu largareiro, the island and the Caesar salad. It was probably a little too much for two but we took the rest away in a takeaway. Only feedback is the service was a little cold and it felt like the server wasn’t really listening to the order so some things were missing/incorrect. However would recommend heartily. 26 Vegan Food Project is a very strong highlight of the Lisbon vegan scene. Clearly one of the best restaurants in the city, with its very interesting modern take on traditional Portuguese food. Staff was friendly and the restaurant was nicely decorated and clean. I ordered a cappuccino and of course it was vegan. I usually don’t like vegan cappuccinos, but this one was actually really good! Furthermore I ordered the selfish burger which came with fried sweet potatoes and garlic mayonnaise. The tofuburger was a bit bland taste wise, although I liked the seaweed crisp that covered the tofu chunk. The menu stated that there was spinach and arugula on the burger (which were present) but the flavor didn't come through as well as the taste of the pickled vegetables. The fries were very salty. The garlic mayonnaise glossed over the saltiness of the fries and the blandness of the burger. The presentation was good, but the dish was alright. Most dishes were veganized traditional meat/fish dishes. I was hoping for more vegetable dishes, but most dishes were tofu/seitan based. The food was good, but not amazing and I think there wasn’t a lot variety. The desserts were actually pretty tasty! This place was recommended to us by 2 die-hard vegetarians. They loved it. We had the Portugese selection starter. That was tasteful, though a lot of mushrooms. I found it dissappointing they called many of their main dishes “steak” or “octopus”. Vegetarian is so much more than replacement of meat or fish. The steak was a bit spongy and huge. To much of the same. Same for our other dish, Island… a huge lump of tofu. Though the dish looks nice this was not our fave vegan resto unfortunately. I've been to Ao26 a few times, it's one of the best vegan spots in Lisbon. They specialize in portuguese-inspired dishes, it's impressive how they can re-create fish and meat textures/flavors by using 100% plant based ingredients. Any meat eater would be fully satisfied by having a vegan meal here. One complaint: I HATE rocket salad, and the menu doesn't say whether or not it's part of the dish, I wish they could fix this. We went here on a friend‘s recommendation and weren’t disappointed. The service is excellent and the food absolutely delicious. Prices are extremely fair. Beautifully decorated, and an attempt at elevated dining experience. We tried the Portuguese starter board, and then the Francesinha and they were good. This is a “veganised” restaurant. That is the dishes are vegan versions of popular local delicacies. So expect a lot of tempeh, seitan, tofu, and mushrooms. The menu lacked creativity for the price. Lot of emphasis on copying exact meat/fish dishes, not our personal favourite. Alas, we could have checked the menu before and made a better choice but there it was the smoke screen of high ratings. The polite and smiling servers knew nothing more than what was on the menu. I would not say the service complimented the price range. The server mixed up our wine order, asked if we really needed fresh plates after the first course. As we entered, without saying welcome the hostess decided to first mention that our table is reserved only till 9pm. I understand the standard two hour policy, but surely this is not a way to greet. At 9:03, she slapped us with the bill, right along with dessert. She also decided to remind us that “It’s already past nine, and in fact it is 9:05”. Good for a single meal, and to try Portuguese delicacies within your dietary (vegan) preferences. Edit: I started with 3 stars, but reducing to 2 because of the dirty toilets, which were very racily decorated for some reason. We ordered the Prohibido burger and the Supreme Bifana burger and weren’t impressed with either. The Prohibido was rather dry and tasteless. Seemed like something I could make at home. Fries were alright but “mayonnaise” was quite good. In terms of the Supreme Bifana, the mustard taste was overpowering and it was tough to eat without making a mess. In addition, the “cheddar” wasn’t melted at all and seemed to have been slapped on at the last minute. Had the peanut butter and chocolate cake for dessert. The flavor was decent but it was quite dense. I would recommend going to The Green Affair instead for better veggie food. We have mixed feelings about our experience here. It’s amazing to see so many traditional Portuguese dishes done completely vegan. We started with the ‘octopus’ salad, which was really good. The seitan steak was good but not great, especially the sweet potato at the side was a bit undercooked. The francesinha was super tasty. For desert we had the peanut butter cake, which was served plain, without any love or effort to make the dish look beautiful. Unfortunately, this was also reflected in the taste, which left us feeling slightly disappointed. +1 for the great service though! I really wanted to love this place after seeing all the amazing reviews and reading the menu, but in the end it was extremely dissapointing. Put simply, the food is not good. Everything else is great - the service, place, and presentetion, but the food is simply unedible. It just felt cheap. The seiten was so chewy and over salted, tasting strongly of unmarinated seiten. I've had many seiten dishes all around the world, and it doesn't need to taste like Spam or canned meat. The other dish we got used such cheap ingredients, with white bread and "deli" style cheese. I just didn't understand it how this passes. We also ordered two cocktails...that sadly cannot be called cocktails. They werel extremely bland, pretty much tasted like lightly flavored water. I can tell they try and care, but it just didn't work for me and I simply don't understsnd how it gets such high reviews. This place is not the „standard“ vegan place where you can get only the common vegan options but they really put a lot of thought into their menu which is reflected by the taste! Really liked this place a lot! If you are looking for vegan adaptations of some traditional portuguese dishes than this is definitely worth a recommendation. We had great service and lovely food, the Portuguese traditional starter board is nicely prepared and gives you a really nice variety of flavours. We especially liked the replacement of fish with mushrooms! The vegan Francesinha was a huge portion that we shared as 2 people as it was quite a heavy dish. A mixture of feelings and wonderful food. I felt like a child eating my seitan steak, as good as veal steak that my grandma used to do when 15 years ago. The "octopus" salad is fantastic, it's made with mushrooms, vinegar, vegetables and flowers. I even took a peanut and chocolate pie, the sweetest way to close my dinner. The food is absolutely scrumptious! A lot of care goes in to their flavorings and it is fabulous that they offer Portuguese staples in a vegan version. They also offer a wide range of other dishes as well. We enjoyed the house dish of the day - Moussaka and salad and a Seitan steak. For dessert the chocolate, peanut pie was a delicious version of a peanut butter cup. Pretentious and the food not so great. We had the “chef’s suggestion” which was supposed to be a Pad Thai with Tofu and Vegetable. The pasta was made of rice and it was breaking and thick, not a noodle, the sauce was watery and the seasoning very tasteless. The vegetables consisted of a few carrots and green beans, completely disappointing for AO. When we told the waitress, the chef replied “well but she ate everything”, clearly they don’t care about client’s opinions. For dessert we had another disappointment, a chocolate coffee cheesecake which was basically a chocolate cake, not even resembling a cheesecake taste. I had the Tofu Bio à Lagareiro, this was very good. We arrived 15min later and called to warn them! They said no problem, when we arrived, after 10 min they informed we had to leave the table in an hour, we thought it was extremely rude. Anyway, AO26 used to be a great place 4 years ago, they had a clear purpose of creating amaZing plant based experiences for clients! It seems like their success has got to them. Our waitress for example didn’t seem to care about recommending anything, even saying or caring about our experience overall! There are plenty of other vegan restaurants in Lisbon which will offer better food and better service! This was mu 5th time there and it will be the last! Very sad experience indeed! Recomend booking a table in advance as it gets quite busy. 👍They also serve traditional Portugeese meals veganised, such as Francesinha or sardines. I recomend drink called "A Saudade" which features famous Portugese cherry liqeur Ginjinha in combination with grapefruit juice and chocolate. 👌 Even my husband who is not at all vegan loved eating there and strongly recomends! 💚 We payed around 60€ for big three course meal plus drinks for two, so not at all expensive. This was an incredible experience. I recommend getting a reservation, this is a nice restaurant that gets filled up. We had a great lunch here. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the cheese board. I have been V aprox 7 years and have NEVER had cheese that tasted like brie, etc. The only thing were not pleased with was the little amount of bread compared to how much cheese there was. Also they serve little sticks which are not so great to dip. We ordered a side of their really good bread and that worked great. What an amazing restaurant! I loved the food, the service, the vibe of the restaurant - everything. But oh my, the food was really amazing. I had the "tofu a lagareiro" and was so happy to eat "fish" again after so many years of being vegan and never finding good good fish alternatives. The seaweed definitely did it's job. This place is overrated. The food is mediocre, not well balanced and lacks flavour. Because of all the good ratings we went there twice as we thought we might’ve chosen a bad dish the first time, but everything we tried was either oversalted or flavourless. The people who ordered burgers seemed more content with their choice, so maybe that’s what to get but: For this price you can get better food at the many vegan restaurants around. The dish I had was called Francesinha. Would highly recommend if you love anything tomato based. It came with a side of crisps to my surprise because on the menu it said chips. I guess that was just a cultural mishap but something to keep in mind if you are coming from the U.K. Otherwise, the staff were lovely and the wait for the food was reasonable. If your looking for a fancier type of vegan restaurant than this is your place! I absolutely loved everything I ate there. The food is served with beautiful arrangements and the dishes are prepared a lot of creativity. We ordered the cheese board and “fish” for starters. The cheese board was definable something I’ve never had at any other vegan restaurant, which makes it even more special. It came with about 6-7 different types of cheese and I really loved them all. For the main course we had the steak and it was also very juicy. For dessert we had the Creme brûlée and chocolate peanut butter cake. It was all super delicious. I want to give it 4.5 stars. The food is fantastic, apart from the dish of the day: the sweet potatoe gnocchi. It was a bit bland. Service was lovely, the restaurant’s decor is fine. The acoustics are a bit harsh so it can be hard to hear! I know I shouldn’t compare to the Botanista but we had a better experience there. We’ll have to come back for more. First we ate a starter 'Octopus salad' and as a sea food lover in the past this was very similar to a non-vegan version as I ate when I was a child in Croatia on holidays. For the main dish I had a traditional dish Francesinha and it was amazing! I was with a non-vegan friend and he said it tasted exactly like the non-vegan one. The 'cheese' on top was so good. My friend also loved his dish. For the dessert we had a Martini coffee cake and it was also really good. Myself, because I am not at all vegan or even vegetarian and enjoyed the entire meal, loved the steak which was actually made of soya beans but looked like a steak! When searching for a vegan restaurants in Lisbon this is one of the top rated ones, and we were also looking to eat something else but salads so we were excited to get to try some good vegan burgers - unfortunately we were really let down by the dishes, we picked the two burgers the waitress recommended, the one with the melted cheese and the tofu crunch one. The tofu crunch didn’t really have a taste, just tofu fried with no extra taste, really blend. The other one was a bit better but still, the patty didn’t really taste good and the cheese was too melted and didn’t have a good texture. The only thing that saved the meal was the sweet potato “fries” which were really just sweet potatoes cut to fingers and put in an oven with good vegan mayo. The prices are reasonable but a bit high for vegan burgers. I would highly recommend you make a reservation to guarantee a spot. The decor was nice and we ended up sharing a table with others, nice! The food itself covered the entire range, like a normal meat/fish restaurant. I ended up ordering a Bifana sandwich with potatoes. The taste was okay, but you could definitely tell the meat substitute was veggie based and the flavors from the Bifana weren't true to the original, guessing that has something to do with the fat missing. In each of these categories I've never had a better Burger or tasted a better lasagna. We shared a vegetable salad which did not live up to the fabulousness of the entrees. Good environment, good location, good food. I was very excited for this place. They didn’t quite live up to my expectations, but they certainly didn’t disappoint. I had the seitan bifana, some potato chips, a small side salad (which I asked for, because I gotta get those greens in) and the peanut butter dessert. The seitan and the bun were really tasty, but the sauce was too heavy for me. Apparently this steak sandwich dish was a traditional one, and the amount of sauce came with it. The potato chips were thick and not crispy. This variation of sweet potato became my favorite although I was disappointed that the fries weren’t crispy. The peanut butter oreo cake was really nice, but also not that creative. Just crush some oreos, put some sweetened peanut butter and melted chocolate on top and voila. I accompanied my meal with a glass of Rosé which was the best wine I’ve had during my short stay in Portugal! Don’t get me wrong! The food was good and I’m curious about the rest of the menu and potential of the chef. Would definitely go back if I had the time and money.
