  Situated 20-30mins drive from Pico do Arieiro and Monte Palace, this restaurant is ideal for lunch post visit/hike. They have big parking space and both indoor and outdoor seating. Recommended to make a reservation beforehand. Quick and good service. All the food we ordered were delicious. We had beef espetada, bolo do caco, sweet potato with honey, venison with mushroom sauce and suckling pork. The mushroom sauce was a little salty. They’re also famous for their passion fruit cheesecake, best to have with espresso.   The best thing you can do after hiking to Pico Ruivo and back the whole day is to stop here and eat the best meat you can find on the island! We had to wait about 20 minutes for our table, because we didn’t have a reservation.   Vomiting all the night After Visit We dined at Abrigo do Pastor on March 5th and initially enjoyed the meal. The food, including espada fish, Portuguese steak, fish soup, brownie, fondant, juice, and tea, was all tasty. Unfortunately, after we came to hotel, both my bf and I became very ill with vomiting, fever, and exhaustion throughout the night and the whole following day. As we hadn't eaten elsewhere, we can't help but suspect the fish soup may not have been fresh. This sickness unfortunately put a damper on our Madeira vacation. I recommend avoiding this restaurant until they can assure guests of proper food handling practices.   We went here after going canyoning with Epic Madeira, it was exactly what we needed. It was the most expensive meal of our entire trip and it still felt very reasonably priced. If you enjoy steak I recommend the espetada regional which was some of the best meat I’ve ever had! Also very easy parking in a huge lot just for the restaurant.   Terrible service and very unorganized, before (while waiting for a server to get you a table) and during lunch. Regarding the food, rice with beans was terrible without much flavor (all side dishes are ordered separately), same for the rabbit plate (terrible flavor, tasting to much to wine meaning the sauce was not properly cooked/reduced). In the end, even the bill is not fair (too expensive). Not recommended at all, you have amazing options in the island and way more affordable for the kind of service you are looking (local restaurant, with local food).   We’d found this restaurant via a blog on where to eat in Madeira and were so glad we made the effort to go! We had a shaky start as the staff didn’t seem friendly when we were showed to the table. It’s an odd setting as it’s like a hunting lodge but with TV’s on everywhere showing the football. Things improved when our waitress returned to take our order. She was smiley and engaging and offered recommendations on the sides to go with the meat. We ordered the traditional bolo do caco (flatbread) to start followed by pluma and the meat skewer with a small chips and small roasted sweet potato with honey. The bread was good and the meats can out almost immediately. Both were so tasty, juicy and plentiful! The chips were homemade deliciously crispy and the roast sweet potatoes with honey were divine. Excellent food - highly recommended 👏🏼 We had beers and water and the bill was 54€ - great value too.   We arrived last weekend evening for a dinner. Upon arrival we were “greeted” by a server with an obvious attitude. When my wife asked questions about some items in the menu, the server answered with an on obvious smirk. Later, after we asked the same server to give us a few minutes to consult the menu, she just disappeared and refused to come back to take our orders. Finally, after maybe 15-20 minutes of attempting to “convince” her to come back (only two other tables were taken at that time), we gave up and left. The server continued to smirk at us.   What a wonderful location and stunning restaurant in the middle of the mountain. The food was authentic and true Maderia style. I had a wonderful lunch prior to taking my flight back to London. The liver was cooked in Maderia wine and the baby goat was so tender and the meat fell off the bone. Great bottle of red from Portugal and I wished I visited here in my previous trips in Maderia.   Spectacular - great scenery, unique and beautiful decor, and amazing food. Our server Marta was very sweet. Regrettably, choices by the staff created a less than desirable experience. All foreigners were seated in the warmest, most cramped stuffy, and oppressive dining room in the restaurant. The staff was very particular about this, not agreeable when tourists asked to be seated elsewhere. The temperature in the other three quarters of the restaurant was perfect - Goldilocks zone. These spaces were empty when we arrived and they were filling up with locals when we left. When the staff’s intent is lost in translation, a customer is forced to wonder - am I being disrespected because I am foreigner? Or…. Do they keep the non-Portuguese customers in a certain spot because the server for that area is the person who can speak other languages with the customers?   This place was really something. A long lonely drive to the top of mountain and all of a sudden you come to a place fulllll of people. Looks a bit like alpine house and serves hot drinks and soups outside. Staff was friendly and got us a table without serevation. Food was good but the place had a weird feeling with all its animal heads on the walls. Also bathrooms were cold and had some mold on the walls. But if you are nearby i still think worth a visit.   This is a great restaurant and treasure where you wouldn't expect it. In the middle of nowhere, there is this rustic and welcoming place that serves the best food we had on the island. Traditional dishes (no so much seafood but more meat and vegetable dishes) served in copious portions and with a charming service. The menu offers dishes away from the Madeira classics like scabbard fish with banana and the like. Goat stew for example. But also the Espetadas are great and worth a try. Try the Pijaminha which offers a taste of 5 different desserts but be aware that it serves at least two persons! Defnite recommendation!   Minus one star for a female server that was super mean and unfriendly. The other servers were kind and responsive. Food: chicken soup was watery and nothing special. I got it because of some YouTuber. Nothing special. The Madeira soup with bread. Amongst the worst soups I’ve ever had. They unloaded tons of what tasted like olive juice into the chicken soup (I didn’t know it was the same base when ordering- it was cold so I wanted two soups). Anyway, terrible broth and some stale bread and over cooked eggs tossed in. Save your money and get something else. Passion fruit cheesecake was delightful. Highly recommend.   The soups (tomato and wheat) were very tasty and welcome after our long walk that day. Desserts (passion fruit mousse and custard cake) were huge and very tasty as well. Place itself looks very old and has alot of character. Only real downside is that when you just want to have a coffee and cake, you would have to either sit in a disgusting room that smells like cigarettes or sit outside.   This is a nice Restaurant up in the hills about 15 min by car from Funchal Monte. The restaurant is surrounded by eucalyptus and a variety of conifere and pine trees. The air has a very pleasant fragrant smell. It's perfectly suited to relax and having a fine dinner in a place where only few tourists will be found. It's kind of an insider tip. The food i have tried was excellent. Prices are somewhat elevated, but the quality justified the price in my opinion. I think the restaurant is more designed for the colder days. I was missing a terrace with shady trees or parasols. There is a small half openair place, but it is covered with windows. The only way to get there is by car or motorcycle.   Pretty expensive and kitcsh. They are really great at marketing but I'm unsure about the food. The espetada was unremarkable and expensive. I think this place is for visiting when you have a party of four people or more and can spend a lot of money on a lot of dishes that you can share. It looks like the crowd is mostly Portuguese, I do believe this is an upscale restaurant for the upper class or people treating themselves once a year. Being a single person who came in on a motorcycle, I think they understood that I was not going to be a big spender and therefore was ignored for most of the time I was there, didn't seem that friendly. The portions are really big and meant for sharing (especially soups), best ask the staff if you're not ordering too much!   I have been coming to eat since i was a little boy. I remember to came and to order their awesome meets, specially their pepper meat. But, i have to say that the things have changed. I went today to eat and my exprience was far from good. The food was late, i ordered different types entries and principal plates but the quality was far from what it used to be. First we waited almost two hours for the food. Their soups were just good. Their meat was harsh and without flavour. Really bad for a place specialized on meats. Their octopus plate was the worst i have ever tried. Maybe the only good thing was their liver, but maybe it was a four out of five.   When we arrived at the restaurant, only one table of 10 pers was occupied inside the restaurant. I’ve been invited to a table. After 15 min, when nobody came, I have asked for someone to take my order…We ordered Bachalau and something regional (pork). The “Bachalau” had absolutely no taste and it was full of onion… and the pork had too much fat… We have ordered also a small bottle of wine 0,375ml, one of the most expensive in the menu, ~ 15 EUR… we discovered a below average wine so I consider this as a rip off. All in all, we came with big expectations (after driving on a road in construction) seeing 4.7 stars in average from more the 2000 reviews. Not sure why…hope it was only one time bad experience.   What an awesome experience! Couldn’t be more happy about a meal. From the beginning to the end every member of the staff was nice but also very helpful, in a sophisticated way. The overall atmosphere is pretty nice, and the music choice is very appropriate. Personally, I really liked their big and mixed collection of wines. Everything was clean and classy! We really enjoyed both of the soups that were served, but mainly the wheat soup, because the tomato one was a bit too tasty for our liking. As for main dishes, definitely try the traditional espetada and ask for fries. The fries are very nicely cut, fried and served. The octopus was ok, a bit too cooked to my liking, but overall pretty good dishes. For dessert we had a chocolate cake with ice cream, which was pretty good, and their original “almofadinha” which is a mix of 5 deserts.   Waow - these were serious portions, but the staff was incredibly helpful and friendly. Had an amazing veal filet grilled on wooden logs and the “pluma” of black pork. Both the tastiest meats we had all week. Veggies on the side were good too. Beware they have the most impressive wine menu with pure Portuguese selection - we chose a rather surprising pure Petit Verdot that went perfectly with it all. We decided to go for the traditional so we ordered "Açorda Madeirense" and Tomato soup for starters, a "Picadinho" for the main course, and to finish off beautifully, we had a passion fruit pudding and a glass of passion fruit "Poncha". Everything was delicious, which combined with the great service and warm fireplace, made the entire meal a fantastic experience! The soups come in a quite large pot, so unless you are very hungry, two people can share one. The same for the "Picadinho", the serving is enough to feed at least 3 or 4 people.   A terrific place to eat! It feels very rustic like the old days when it served as a house for the Sheppard's. The food is truly delicious and they also have a great wine and beer selection. I highly recommend the tomato soup. But ... The place is always crowded specially on rainy days and in the winter so be prepared to wait. Also for such a fancy place the bathrooms are a joke and really ridiculous compared to the rest of the facilities. Highly recommended (Traduzido pelo Google) Um ótimo lugar para comer!   Old rustic house with tradicional food from the island. Its a warm place, open almost every day and the food its excellent. I was in there, majority of the times in Winter.   Very nice place. Highly recommended. You can stop there only to taste a poncha or try our traditional chicken or tomato soup at the bar, or ever a prego.
