  What a great find. Ate here on our first night, tried a couple of others but none as good so returned to eat here for the remainder of our holiday. Service is friendly and efficient, and food is so tasty, and a lovely terrace to enjoy the outdoors but in the shade.   Went here for our wedding anniversary dinner and it was outstanding. Food, service, choice of wine (400 wines on offer) were all spectacular.   Chalet Vicente exceeded our expectations! We were fortunate to snag a table without a reservation and enjoyed the cozy ambiance. Dining outside was a delight, and the main dishes were superb—especially the perfectly cooked traditional espetada and Saturday roast piglet. The desserts, particularly the maracuja and brownie, were a delightful finale to our fantastic dinner experience. Highly recommended!   The typical TOURIST TRAP It was a recommendation from our tour guide as a place to get the best local Madeiran food. We ordered lapas, local shellfish, which came to the table in about 30 seconds which made us wonder how they where able to make them so quick. They where chewy and had a fishy aftertaste. As main we also went full local and ordered baked fish with passionfruit and grilled banana. This dish was, to be honest, just not our taste, but the execution was also not there. The whole thing tasted like batter dunked in old grease. After a bite we chose to forego any unpleasant toilet visits. Second main was a duck rice. This dish could have been geat if they would have taken good cuts of meat. All I found was dry pieces of what you usually trim off and rice soaked in fat. The restaurant shares a garden with a sportsbar flooded in neon light and flickering tv’s showing current games. This might be something for couples where the wife wants a romantic dinner but the husband can only think about his team and the score. You can get a little bit both at the same time.   The place was recommended by our local guide. I saw also a lot of positive reviews. We went there and after first drinks were extremely disappointed. Tablecloths outside were dirty. Flies around us were disgusting. When it came to order I mentioned my starters and told that I still need to think about main dish. I was informed by the waiter in not gently way that I need to order everything in once. So in hurry we ordered something. Our food was not warm. Our dougther get hamburger with bloody burger. They did not ask even upfront if it should be medium or well done. As it was kid menu we thought it would be well done...our bad maybe.   A tale of two meals... I had the tomato soup with poached egg starter which was really good but my wife had the cheese with cabbage leaf. This is literally what she got...she was expecting the cabbage to be like Greek style vine leaves wrapping the cheese but NO, it was a raw cabbage leaf with cheese chunks on top. I then had the Angus steak. Again, very nice. My wife went for the scallops, yes plural, with asparagus. She expected 3 - 4 scallops, since it was only 'with asparagus' but got 2 quite small ones - technically correct but not inspiring. It also came with lots of rice, and as a (new) diabetic she'd been cutting down on carbs... Disappointed, to say the least, as we'd expected better/more. Not cheap either... The environment was awful.   Wouldnt recommend. Ended up being really expensive for mediocre food. I had the beef kebab and it was fatty and chewy, others food was alright but nothing amazing. You also have to pay for the sides separately. We were offered drinks at the beginning that we were under the impression that they were complimentary but were not.   Unfortunately 1 star is the minimum that can be given when writing a review. We ordered espetada and asked for the meat to be cooked to medium. What we received looked ok from the outside but was basically raw inside. We asked twice if the meat was ok as it seemed odd to eat practically raw meat and were told it's fine. We should have followed out guts as we got food poisoned, practically had no sleep that night, missed a trip we booked for next day, could barely drink / eat. The stomach pain and nausea passed only several days later. We went back to the restaurant and the attitude we received was unacceptable. There was no greeting, the manager denied everything and was unpleasant to talk with. No resolution nor compassion was given. A waiter, who heard the whole conversation, upon us leaving, laughed and said 'come again'. Considering that we had terrible body weakness and couldn't eat properly this comment was most insensitive.   I fully recommend the menu of the day. It is only 10€ including 1 dish (which is enough to get full), 1 drink and 1 coffee. There wasn’t many people and the place is quite big.   After nearly a week in Madeira sampling the best the island can offer we came across this place. I really wished we hadn’t!! It’s ok is the best way I can sum it up. The beef skewers were pretty grim and flavourless. The cheese on a cabbage Leaf was weird and tasteless. The tomato soup was the highlight of the meal. I particularly liked the waitress coming over to ask if everything was okay and seeing a large piece of uncooked beef on my plate said she would ask the chef to reheat it and cook it more!!! For gods sake this is not what any restaurant should do! I didn’t eat it when it returned but popped it into the flower beds. As for the dessert of caramel pudding and a tiramisu I have two words appalling and appalling. After finally being presented with a bill of £103 all I could think of was how on earth I was so stupid to have trusted reviews. There are far better places in Funchal than this, do your homework first and leave trustpilot and Google unchecked. My final comment Walk on Past there are better places.   Arrived at the restaurant and was warmly welcomed, but this changed after my main was served. In a nut shell my food was too salty, service was disorganised (was being served by 4 different waiters) We spent over €80 euros for our food but it isn’t worth that at all. When seated we order a starter, the squid and the bread which was served extremely fast but was so tasty. Asked the server to recommend us a bottle of white wine, which he did, and it was beautiful.   We kind of had high hopes/expectations for this restaurant. But unfortunately it was awful. The service was good but the food was really bad. The starter was ok, not great. We both ordered the tuna filet as the main dish but it was insanely dry!! We usually never complain if something didn’t taste as we hoped but this tuna filet was so dry we felt like cows ruminating. We did tell the waiter but he said you have to use the sauce with it. Sorry but even with the sauce it was still dry.   Nice looking place. For some reason we weren't told what the specials were. Everyone else was. We had scallops and peri peri chicken. The scallops (1 per) were small and smothered in some curry sauce type thing so could not really taste it. Chicken was unfortutelly not fresh. It was very dry and some parts very close to cold so clearly a reheat job. Overall I would not say terrible but the worst meal I've had in funchal. Maybe your experience will be better than ours. In the second time, we were there for very earlier dinner (5:15pm) and the restaurant was basically empty, and we (we are 3 people) wanted to seat in the same place as before: a rounded table for 4 people.   Where to start! After staring on the menū for to long and thinking we have to try everything we decided to give it a try. The ambiente and decoration as well as the nice welcoming was on point...the service was really friendly and always around. But the food!! Wow! We tried fish and meat and both did not disappoint!! And don‘t get me started on the prices, absolutely great. For the first visit I had to give 5 stars but the second time was by far not as good as the first time.   One of the best meals I've had in Madiera thus far. The restaurant is connected to the hole in hole bar which makes having drinks first very easy, the restaurant itself is very well kept with great outside seating, private rooms and tables inside available. The staff are welcoming and efficient, they will also help to explain menu items and suggest wine pairings. They stock some fantastic wines. The menu is not lacking in variety, there will be something for everyone including vegetarians and vegans. The quality of our meal was great, meat dishes are a great choice here as I suspect they have a good butcher/supplier. The sirloin steak and calf liver was excellent, cooked well, seasoned well and tender. Seafood was fresh (however they do not devein prawns) and cooked well. We had a vegetarian join us and the Vegetable lasagna was of the same standard. Sauces and sides were also done very well, however sides do no come with any of the menu items but they are big enough to share. Potato and maize sides are excellent here.   I think this is one of the best restaurants we've been in Madeira. From the outside it seems a bit dated and doesn't inspire memorable meal but oh boy were we wrong. Apart from the fact that it has a nice shaded garden, the waiters are nice and polite, the food was a-mazing. We had octopus and seafood skewers plus some local shellfish called limpets which we never heard of before. The portions were huge, the food was fresh and tasty and the price was more than reasonable. Plus, as we're not that keen in deep fried food, everything was grilled and not as oily as everything else we tried. Definitely a place to have a good meal. The only reason for 4 rather than 5 is that is located on a very busy road and next to the Hole In One pub and sports bar so it can be rather noisy when eating outside.
