  We were recommended to visit Il Vivino and we were encouraged by the reviews. We went as a group of 8 and the service, ambience and food quality was excellent. We were guided by the owner helping us and he suggested the 2 or 3 course meal option with half a bottle of wine and offered great value for money.   So, the food is superb, and the maitre d is even better. The shrimp and salmon starter was beautiful presented, however, the tuna steak was perfection. What we like about any new, to us, restaurant is direction on what’s fresh or what they’re particularly proud of that day, and we weren’t disappointed!   The decor is really nice and the mirror/paintings add to the overall ambiance. Scallops were super juicy and bruschetta was great! The risottos were also nice. However the creme brule sugar top was burnt which ruined the flavour of the dish. The service is really warm and kind!!   The place is beautiful and service is great. Not sure why the place is rated so well. To say it all, the butter from the couvert (bread, spread and butter) was like the ones you get on the airplane or at a hotel - packed. Food was very (below) average. There’s so many great places to dine in Madeira. This is not it. We ordered the asparagus risotto (which I added salt and pepper to), the beef (the mushroom sauce was too sweet) and the fried octopus (nothing special). On our first visit, we were a larger group, and we were genuinely impressed with the overall quality of the food. The standout was the perfectly cooked beef cheeks, which received high praise, especially from my son. The desserts were also exceptional, adding a delightful finishing touch to our meal. However, it's worth noting that the wait for our dishes was longer than expected. Encouraged by our initial positive experience, we decided to give Il Vivaldi another try. This time, as a smaller family group of three, we were specifically drawn back for the excellent beef cheeks. Unfortunately, we were somewhat disappointed during our second visit. While the service was surprisingly prompt, the beef cheeks didn't quite live up to our previous experience. The disappointment was further compounded by my overcooked and dry salmon dish. Despite the mixed outcomes, I would still recommend Il Vivaldi. The service provided by the staff is consistently pleasant, and the balance between the quality of the food and the price is commendable. It's possible that the variations in our experiences were due to specific menu items or kitchen inconsistencies, but on the whole, Il Vivaldi remains a restaurant worth trying on the beautiful island of Madeira.   After trying the Maderian wine as part of a cruise excursion in the shop downstairs, the owner/proprietor (who I sadly did not get his name) introduced us to the Il Vivaldi upstairs. The food was excellent, both in terms of quality and presentation, and the service was lovely, we felt very welcome and the staff are very friendly. Great value as well given the quality of the meal was definitely 5-star. Overall a very pleasurable meal and would definitely return to next time we holiday in Funchal.   It's a very nice place! We were pleasantly surprised, especially since we have many favorite restaurants to compare it to. The restaurant is definitely in our family top: 1. Meeting and contact with guests - 5 stars. 2. Serving and presentation of food - 5 stars. 3. Attention to guests and compliments from the restaurant - 5 stars. I was especially pleased when the children received a compliment of an apple in the form of a swan! A small thing, but a delight and attention to the little guests. Definitely recommended. We paid €57 for soup, 2 mains and 3 large glasses of wine, and surrounding and atmosphere are really good. Food brought on lidded silver platters, lots of staff and a fantastic violin player. The lamb shank was well presented and served with some nice al-dente vegetables. The chairs were too low. The service was professional, albeit surly. The toilets were poor. We ordered a 16 euro wine but were charged 18 euros. It was ok but we won't be back.   Perfect! Found this place on 'the fork' app highly recommended and with a 30% off a la carte menu when booked online. The venue is stunning, the staff are attentive and friendly. They also do a fixed price offer like a lot of other restaurants in the area if you like to include wine and 3 courses. The food was delicious and carefully prepared. The dining rooms are cool especially in the hotter weather they have been experiencing which makes eating out a lot more pleasant. We will definitely return when next in Funchal.   We were kinda hyped to try the food at Vivaldi since the reviews were good. The location is nice, kinda elegant and the service very good. The food unfortunately was just ok, very plain and simple. Pumpkin risotto was overcooked and the mains (Duck and Lamb) with not a lot of flavours. I think the place needs a bit of a twist. A bit overrated.   Vivaldi is one of the Greats, and Il Vivaldi lives up to his legacy. The finest Portuguese wines, carefully selected from the Douro, to pair with an exquisite six course meal, only to be serenaded by a most talented violinist. The waiting staff are knowledgeable, dedicated and only ask you for feedback because they are genuinely wanting to hear it. Let's not pretend everyone is perfect 100% of the time --- my pallete cleanser was mango sorbet, but between the fish and the lamb, it was far too sweet and spoiled my first mouthful of red wine. Frustratingly avoidable, but I managed to survive, and they took the feedback extremely constructively. A rarity in front of house, these days. The music was fabulous. We almost wept at some of her most touching tones. An overall unmatched, unrepeatable and unforgettable experience.   Myself and a group of friends visited here for dinner and experienced the set menu with 4 courses and paired wines. I couldn't recommend this place more with not only the staff, atmosphere and the accommodation of myself and 7 other people but the food was absolutely incredible with every course being a sensational dish of flavours.   Location in the middle Funchal. Right on the front, almost opposite the marina. Greated with a warm welcome and shown to an outside table, at out request. However, the location of the outside tables means that you get a lot of noises from the passing traffic, as the restaurant sits next to the main duel carageway. Service was pleasant but sometimes over the top. My glass of wine was topped up 3 times by different waiting staff, and I hadn't drank any of it! Food arrived quickly even though we had requested that we have a long pause between corses. We booked the table, using one of the many table booking apps, and recived a discount off the food bill.   Based on four visits already, I can confidently say that it's one of the better places to eat in Funchal. The service is very warm and friendly. However, if you want a more predictable experience, don't go during the lunch hours (we would usually go a bit later in the afternoon). For example, the last time we did not really enjoy their lunch of the day, which vas a very simple dish (basically, black scabbardfish with sweet potatoes). Also, they brought by mistake soda instead of wine to my partner, which was a clear sign the staff were a bit overwhelmed by the number of guests they had during the day. We did not say anything, but the owner (or at least someone who seemed like one) immediatelly noticed the dissatisfaction in our faces and after apologizing and explaining the situation, crossed out the lunch from the bill. The food was superb and the atmosphere was wonderful. We had the pleasure of having a violinist playing throughout the meal (not sure if this happens all the time).   We went there because of the good reviews, but sadly had a very bad experience. Uninteresting, ill-prepared and overpriced food. My starter, pumpkin soup, was the only meal that was edible. Shrimp starter my husband took was just 4 tastless mini shrimps in a bowl full of butter. My main salmon was horribly dry and overcooked. They served it with mostly undercooked winter vegetables, that totally didn't fit with the fish. My husband had a duck with same exact vegetables, it didn't taste like much either.   I loved it here! One of my favourite restaurants on the island, the food was really tasty and the staff were so nice and attentive - shout out to Sancho he was so lovely! The classic experience for €39 includes 4 dishes and 4 glasses of wine and is such great value! I got the scallops with pea risotto which I wasn’t sure on at first but then I really liked.   We had the 4 course Classic Experience menu and couldn't recommend it enough! Scallops were so silky and desserts were both delicious and looked incredible (see pics!) We had a tuna steak special and lamb shank for our mains both cooked perfectly.   Magnificent food. My risotto was one of the best risottos I have had in a while. The shrimps were perfectly cooked. The food took around 45 minutes to arrive (which is pretty normal for gourmet restaurants) and the quantities were enormous if you compare them to other restaurants I have been to.   Prices are tiny bit up the other restaurant in town but totally justify by the great cooking skills of the chef and his team. I gave four stars however was disappointed that we werent asked which bread we wanted whilst all the other table seemed to be asked. Also the scallops are disappointingly small whilst being as expensive as the main so I would ask you to avoid choosing this option. Maybe the scallops are imported and so pricey in Funchal? We were due to come to Funchal again in October 2019 but had to cancel our trip so were determined to visit this restaurant again on our return this October.   We chose our food from their €37 menu. This included paired wines with each course. Apart from the starters, which were a little bland (the prawn dish and the scallop dish in the photos), the other courses were delicious. As soon as your water or wine were empty, they topped you up and even had a complementary glass of champagne on arrival. The service was perfect and the head waiter was extremely friendly.   What a lovely evening here. Just returned from dinner, seated on the terrace. The best mojito I've had in a long time, followed by an amuse bouche of tuna and squid ink cream. Beef carpachio was fresh and moist, with an oregano crust. Bouillabaisse had a tomato based fish broth with plenty of fish. Mains were scabbard and parrot fish with fresh veg and I had pork cheeks. The crushed chickpeas didn't add anything, would have preferred some mash but the madeira sauce was rich and tasty. The best course was desserts. Warm chocolate brownie with salted cream, crumble and icecream and fruit purees. Apple and banana crumble was equally tasty. Really friendly and efficient service. Slightly long wait for starters and main but you have to remember when you are on holiday you don't need to rush! We will definitely return before we come home. Lobster thermidor next time! O grão triturado não acrescentava nada, teria preferido um pouco de puré mas o molho madeira era rico e saboroso. O melhor prato foram as sobremesas. Brownie de chocolate quentinho com creme de sal, crumble e sorvete e purês de frutas. O crumble de maçã e banana era igualmente saboroso. Serviço muito amigável e eficiente. Espera um pouco longa pelas entradas e pelo prato principal, mas é preciso lembrar que quando estiver de férias não precisa se apressar! Definitivamente voltaremos antes de voltarmos para casa. Termidor de lagosta da próxima vez! Excelente valor e belo edifício, impecavelmente limpo em todos os lugares.

  We dined here as part of an organised event, but if the restaurant is similar to the private dining room in terms of service, Il Vivaldi is worth a visit. The food was delicious, the steak especially so, the suggested wine pairings complimented each dish. We'll definitely visit again.   Probably the most enjoyable meal we’ve had in Madeira. Beef carpaccio was the best out of all others we tried on the island. Beef fillet was cooked perfectly and the octopus risotto was tasty and cooked exactly as it should. More attention needs to be given to the side dishes, they don’t stand out as much as the mains. The portions are generous and the service was impeccable - attentive without being over present. Very good value for money so a definite 5*.
