  We were first seated in the back which is not the nicest. After asking if we could sit in front we got the first available table! The food, lamb chops and fish with banana, were both really good and the portions very generous. We really liked the ratio, meat, potatoes and vegetables.   Best pub we’ve experienced on our stay! The food is really tasty with large portions, we had the pregos and a couple starters (make sure you’re hungry!). The atmosphere is great inside with lots of football on display and there’s outdoor seating too. The staff are really friendly and helpful, highly recommended.   Madge picked out our first evening bar crawl in Madeira 2023. So far very good. Without planning we would never walk up the short hill to this lovely bar. Great terrace and lovely interior. Great staff. Only here for the beer ( not Double Diamond..look it up..terrible 1970's beer and beer commercial.) Tima actually having bramble gin and Sprite but Madge sticking to a pint of Super Bock. Must return. Just gone 7pm and filling up.   One of the best fish and chips i ever had! Chips with rosemary were amazing, local fish in very crispy batter and interesting passionfruit aioli. Normally i don't eat mushy peas, but here they were really great. My bff ordered wings and they were tasting bad with chemical sauce. Its worth of visiting, if you choose right dishes.   This was the only restaurant where we ate twice during our one week Madeira holiday. Well, it's technically a pub, but they have very good food, and not only pub food. There are several vegan dishes on the menu (filling superfood salad, curry with tofu, etc.). Sandwiches, burgers, soups tasted great. We also tried the beef steak as well as the tuna steak (the later comes with healthy yet filling sides like sweet potato puree and roasted broccoli). Everyone was satisfied from our group. Only tried the bar snacks but based on these can highly recommend, and suprisingly cheap prices.   The one star is for the waitress, she was friendly and pleasant, however she was serving indoors mostly. Outside we had the man who unless you are portugues or female, in which case he will crawl all over you, do not expect to get served in a hurry. I read that the owner says the staff are attentive!! What a joke. The food wasn't even the best, the mac n cheese was mostly cheese with a little macaroni, the scabbard fish was OK but the passion fruit mayo was too sweet for my liking. Unfortunately due the shocking ignorance of the waiter, we then had to go inside and ask for the bill as we were not prepared to have to beg for a drink, so we then proceeded to a bar around the corner called the hole in one, where the staff are attentive and the food is a lot better. If you are reading this review, all I will say is, keep on walking past.   Such a great place. We judged it by it's cover inititially... thought it would be full of Brits, average food, etc. But we had some of the best food of our holiday here! Seriously impressive menu. Great prices. Restauarant quality with really interesting choices and sauce pairings (everywhere else seemed to be Prego or Pizza). Great drinks selection, loved the poncha. The only thing we hated was the smoking indoors, we went twice and didn't see any signage, but from other reviews I think we must have just missed them.   We came on porpuse to have a Sunday roast lunch. On the exterior patio there was some sort of bum hanging around so we went in. Before siting I saw a guy smoking inside so I asked if that was aloud and the waiter said "yes, sure, you can smoke inside". That was not even a separated space or anything. It's against the law. Not only is the food delicious and well presented, its reasonable in price and they offer tje type of food you don't see in this area much.   Holidaying in Madeira and went for "recky" for eateries local to my hotel. I think the place chose me as it caught my eye and people were relaxing outside in the morning. Surrounding hostelries / restaurants were closed.
