  After giving a long string of five-star reviews to various restaurants in Spain and Portugal, I have to dip down to a two-star review for this place. Nothing was very good. Our main courses were passable, I had sausage and my wife had codfish. Nothing to rave about, but edible. And nothing you would expect in a restaurant that had 4.5 stars on Google reviews. The salad was actually decent. The soup is horrible, and the bread was unbelievable. You have to pay for individual bread for each person, it's not very expensive, but it comes in a plastic wrapper and it looks all white and clammy and gross. And while poor service doesn't bother us if the food is good, in this place, the service was really bad and the waiter's face would have broken if he ever smiled or said a kind word to anyone. Regardless of the reviews on Google, I would recommend you skip this place.   I almost feel bad not giving 5 stars. The service was awesome, friendly and helpful. Prices were fair and the selection of food and drinks were good. I've had better Francesinha though. And the fish we got was swimming in olive oil which was not really to our taste. Don't get me wrong, the food wasn't bad, we just had better.   We came here because the lady at Café Santiago suggested it to us as a great place to eat a Francesinha - she was right. Although very heavy and definitely filling, it is a must as an experience in Porto. Perhaps if you're not that hungry, share it.   Sensational. We looked at every restaurant nearby and I'm so glad we chose Santiago da Praça. Even early evening this place is busy and when we left, there were people waiting to get in. Seating in a little pavement terrace and indoors at the counter and in separate booths. Grilled salmon, hake, breaded calamari, lime pie, olives, a bottle of wine and extra glass came in at under €50. The food was simply superb. The hake was delicious with the fish nice and flaky and I loved the rice and salad combination on the plate. The grilled salmon was flavourful. Despite the restaurant being busy, the staff were helpful and attentive. Update: We went back a few days later and had Francesinha (sausages, beef steak and wrapped in melted cheese. Delicious and worth ordering. The meats are layered inside and the Francisinha sits in a beer sauce.) and a Cahorro Santiago Especial. The Cahorro looks like a long burrito (ingredients similar to the Francesinha) and nestled in fries. Both are filling and the one negative is there are too many fries.   Our host recommended this place to us and to especially try the famous francesinha. I need to mention on beforehand that I've never been that much of a "meat eating person". Nevertheless, I ordered it and sadly was not over the moon afterwards as every other review suggests. It was edible but nothing more. The cheese had almost no flavour and the chips either. My friend ordered a salad with salmon and requested clearly to have it served without arugula but the waiter forgot it as he was not attentive to begin with... The salad was unfortunately underwhelming as well (I know you might not necessarily got there to eat salad...); the salmon was not fresh and the sauce meh. We had high hopes but left this place quite disappointed. I suggest you only go there if you crave a big chunk of meat paired with cheese.   Was a bit skeptical of the tourist nature of this place but we arrived in a beautiful and hip place which was unexpected. The stairs is very 'instagram friendly' and the food was amazing. A francesinha que comi aqui foi uma das melhores do Porto pois sou amante de francesinha. A pior coisa sobre esse restaurante é uma fila muito longa para esperar antes de conseguir uma mesa. Foi muito boa comida, mas não posso dizer que valeu totalmente a pena.

  Best "Francesinha" that I ever tryed. Very nice attendents, nice place and amazing food. You could chose one "Francesinha Santiago Top", ask for share it in two plates and also ask for a "Caldo Verde" (typical portuguese soup).   The famous Francesinha is rubbish!! Not only because of the place, the recipe is rubbish in general. I give 2 stars not only considering the dish but the place, that is a sad bar. And the service was quite poor, even with half place empty. Oh and fries were soaked, not crispy at all, disgusting. I do not give 1* only because after all the price is almost fair (12€ for francesinha + water) For italians, something from my diary about la francesinha: “Creato negli anni ‘60 da un ubriaco che s’era innamorato della Francia e della sua cucina, quest’orrenda imitazione del croque monsier ha inspiegabilmente preso piede diventando emblema ignorante della cucina locale... ho ancora mal di pancia” Make yourself a big favour and just order fish, possibly somewhere else.   It is a nice place with a nice view on the square. The food is good and the portions are huge. It is a little bit noisy but waiters are very friendly and helpful. I would not define it cheap but for sure is affordable. The Francesigna is their most famous dish and they serve it with several options. Beer is good.   I don’t get all the good reviews here. The meat is super dry - especially pork was barely eatable. Grilled cod was equally as dry. The only meal that was somewhat good - the classic francesinha sandwich - it earned a second star. Pork and fish were swimming in oil. Lots of French fries. The service was ok.
