One of the best meals I had in Portugal, I won't usually eat octopus but realized it was their specialty once I did and decided to try it. “Very cosy little spot serving hearty flavours” The portion size here is really big and good so bring along a big appetite. Their signature dish is the fried octopus rice - picture itself was alright but the rice was infused with the lovely octopus flavours. We also ordered two different stews - the oxtail stew and pork tripe. Both were amazing but super heavy flavours in even bigger portions so you need big eaters else it will just be too much. Loved this little gem with the awesome view of the water and great service and food. Almost everything was gluten free and the waitstaff knew their menu well. The garlic prawns, sea bass and veal in pan were all very good and had big portions. They did try and sneak a 15% tip (we are clearly American), but we told them no and they apologized and took it off. Otherwise fantastic. I went there at least 10 times in the last 6 months for the octopus and prawns (all the rest of the food is mediocre). But it was always this curly haired guy working there which is too impolite and we saw it with all people. Last week I reserved, they told me I have to come at 7 pm and leave the table at 8:30 (strange but OK) I finished work at 6 and went directly from the office to there, we arrived at 7:18 pm because of lot of traffic and rain. This arrogant and impolite same guy was laughing and told us "we have 10 minutes late policy you should be respectful and arrive on time" he spoke to me like that literally without even looking to me. We thought he was joking we said sorry you see us with our office dress and back bags we tried our best, he looked to us and told us "You did not understand? We gave your table. Please leave the restaurant!" I was shocked, my colleague was pregnant and he fired us from the restaurant like that at night under the rain. Nobody ever told us about these 10 minutes late policy, they did not even called us to warn us or verify if we're not coming so they can offer the table. I would really appreciate the manager to contact me or any responsible person there. Meanwhile I'm convincing all the people I know in Porto to never go there from now on. It's a small restaurant but packs big flavours and excellent ambience. I had the grilled octopus and my friend had the oxtail stew. Both incredibly tasty. I wish I read the 1-star reviews before. Service is extremely rude. We asked for the grilled octopus and brought the rice octopus. We politely said that's not what we asked for and the same moustache Portuguese waiter everyone complained about claimed that's what we asked for. We went back and forth until he accepted the different course not before he yelled and said I should speak more clearly and not use a different language. Tourist trap all-around. The food was amazing, and I recommend the place, but sadly we were seated outside and as it rained that day, the seats and tables were wet. Definitely would recommend if seated inside or on a drier day. In payment there is a non mandatory tip menu which I find is very tourist focused and I did not like that, tipping should come as a gesture from the customer, not the place. Walked in to enquire about table availability at 7pm. Was told by an impatient, aggressive and rude staff that they were fully booked for the evening and for the next 4 evenings! There were 4 empty tables which they insisted were reserved. Went to a neighbouring eatery and walked back and past the restaurant an hour and half later and the same tables were still vacant. I'm not sure if the owner of the restaurant is aware of the staffs poor and lazy reservation procedures. Arrogant and insincere restaurants don't deserve patronage. When we came to the place, there was a free table outside, nobody meeting customers, we sat at the table and then came a waiter and shouted at us angrily that there are people waiting. We enjoyed our dinner at Adega São Nicolau. We wanted genuine Portuguese food, so we got the octopus salad as a starter and the oxtail stew and the Arouquesa veal roasted in the pan for our entrees. It was all excellent. And for Americans or others traveling from high cost places, all of that and a bottle of red wine was 72€, about $77. It was a greater value than what we get in the states. The restaurant sits maybe two blocks from the waterfront in Porto and is tucked away in a small alley. It has a lot of charm. They were raising their voice at my friend in front of other people because she was asking kindly to be seated inside as she was not feeling well and as it was a fresh night it was definitely not pleasant to sit outside. Loved this little gem in an adorable alley a bit set back from the standard riverfront dining. There was a large group of waiting diners every time we walked by, so we decided to stop for lunch. We were given a glass of lovely white house-wine while we waited for a table. Our wait was about 15 minutes, but worth it. The food was excellent. Prices were mid-range. The grilled sardines were really good with perfectly cooked vegetables as an accompaniment. The octopus salad was bright and tasty and the sausage appetizer dish was very good. I'm not sure what the reviews about the Asian hate was as I did not feel or sense that. Not taking away from what others may have experienced but I wanted to throw that out there. Service seemed fine for me considering how busy the place was. This was probably the best meal I had in Porto so far on my 3rd day here. This place was recommended to us by our local travel guide, who made reservations for dinner for us ahead of time. The place can get very busy, even mid-week, and we saw scores of people being turned away as they were full, so we would recommend making reservations! The waitstaff were run off their feet but were always friendly and very welcoming. The main waitress also had time to chat with us: the resto is a bit of a family affair and is a tiny hole in the wall (literally) which may be easily missed if you don't look carefully, but is well worth the visit for homey, northern Portuguese comfort food. We ordered Porto style tripe (a traditional dish and must try, even if you're squeamish about organ meats this may convert you!) and the grilled sardines. Best for sharing. We both had a delicious creamy vegetable soup as starter and also ordered a bottle of excellent vinho verde. We were stuffed but had to try the Quidim de coco. Delicious! The restaurant is located in the Ribeiro district (right by the river) and it is a short stroll after dinner to see lively street performances and get some pretty Instagramable pics of Luis I bridge and Vila Nova de Gaia at night. This was our first time in Porto (it will not be our last), and this Adega will be a must-visit on our subsequent trips. A friend recommended this place as one of the best meals he had in Porto, so we thought we had to try. Amazing food in Porto! We had the octopus filets with rice and the arouquesa veal roasted in the pan. The meat was very tasty and comes with homemade fries on the side. Very generous portion! The only (minor) negative, some of the waiters are less friendly than others. But in general, service is great, we came without a reservation and were seated 5 minutes later. We went there first time during lunch time but there was a long queue so we come back at dinner time and it was fortunate enough to have a seat outside. I think all the seat inside were only for reservation. After we seated there was a long queue and that makes us wonder about the taste, whether if it is so superb/special. We ordered octopus rice, tripe stew and grilled sardines. Well, we think the octopus rice did really well, it was fried evenly and the rice is flavourful. Tripe stew was good too and lots of stuff inside the stew- we didn’t know it comes with rice so the portion is definitely overload😂 For the grilled sardine, it was cold when served so a little disappoint on that, but it was tasty. Overall, we left satisfied and stuffed. Horrible service - many reviews mentioning racism, similar to our experience. (5 stars to increase visibility of this review) We visited around 2pm and sat outside. When it started raining, we were happy to wait briefly for the waiters to make accommodations for us, as we had a small umbrella to cover ourselves and our food. However, we waited for over 10 minutes in the rain, at which point it was raining heavily. But even our food was getting wet, the waiters did not pay attention to us, though they moved the group sitting behind us inside (who had only drinks). When my partner asked the waiter for assistance, the waiter mocked my partner and say ‘he couldn’t stop the rain’, and instead attended to another table, taking their order, whilst ignoring us in the rain. Seeing this, I got up to speak to the rude waiter, who was not apologetic at all, stating that he had to serve other tables (all of whom were already inside). He then offered to move our now wet food into a table inside. I asked multiple times to pay for the food we had eaten as we wanted to leave. The waiter insisted we did not pay and asked us to leave. Living in Europe, I have never accused anyone of racism, but given our experience and many other reviews here (by other Koreans and foreigners), I can think of no reason for the poor service we received other than the colour of our skin. A little pricey in my opinion for standard of cooking but redeems itself for its location in a small alley at the riverfront & friendly staff with a nice cozy interior. This restaurant was rather disappointing considering looking at the reviews. There was something a miss with each dish. Great portions for the prawns however it was too salty. The seafood rice had a bitter taste, lacking depth of flavour and so watery. Rather expensive compared to other restaurants which serves better quality and dining experience. I have to agree with many other 3-4 star reviewers for this place. Although the food was very good the overall experience was not so great. First of all expect to wait for a long time before you can get a table. My disappointment was for the lack of service. Our waiter forgot our bottle of water order multiple times. Once seated it took almost an hour to get our food and it was very disappointing to see other tables that were seated way after us were getting their food before us. I would honestly love to give them 5 stars because the food we had was pretty good, however we found a screw in our shellfish rice plate and almost swallowed it. One of the best restaurants in Porto along the Ribeira. Although it’s a little touristy - the quality of food is really good and sitting outside in the little lane with a view of the river, enjoying a glass of vino verde made this place one of the highlights of our trip. They had some of the freshest prawns we tried to date and the octopus fillet rice was really tasty. The queue is pretty long but it was a pleasant wait at the stairs.. Their grilled bream and octopus is sooooo good! Definitely among one of the best dishes I’ve had during my trip in Portugal. The waiter is very attentive, friendly and speaks great English. We had a lovely time at dinner here. We got the grilled sea bass and veal steak both were fantastic and reasonably priced. We sat outside and enjoyed the atmosphere. Would definitely dine here again! The Blanc de Noirs sparkling wine was a surprising gem. One note, the chocolate mousse was not what we expected. Perhaps we were thinking more of a French-style mousse but this was more pudding-like and tasted as though it had more caramel or coffee notes. We didn’t dislike it, but we also didn’t finish it. I arrived at noon on a Wednesday only to find out that they open at 12:30. I didn’t mind waiting since I knew the dining experience would be worth the wait. My friend and I put our names down for a table inside since they do not take reservations for the outside tables. At 12:30, we snagged an outside table with a wonderful view of the water. We ordered the fried octopus rice and pork chop. The octopus was so wonderful and I highly recommend it. The pork chop was very tough. We did enjoy the rice that came with it but I’ll skip that dish next time I visit. I ordered the almond tartlet for dessert. This restaurant is tucked away at the end of Riberia. We were only given the option to sit outside but there were heat lamps to keep us warm. Similar to the other reviewers' experiences, the waiters ignore you for a while and asking them to do anything takes a long long time. We waited about 25 minutes for a table for lunch at about 2pm. There were lots of empty tables inside, couldn't understand the rationale. Ordered an espresso that never came. Didn't get charged for it though. Food was tasty though. Delicious clams. Good octopus but super salty, left me dry as the Sahara. Dessert was amazing, the almond tart and the orange came was delicious. Nice simple seafood. We had the white asparagus, clams and grilled octopus. All were cooked perfectly. There is terrace seating which is nice but you cannot book tables out here. The ambience inside is also nice and you can book a table. I suggest trying to book a table as it does get very busy. The price is reasonable and the staff are very helpful in advising that we ordered adequately and we really did. We walked away full without any leftovers. This was a good find in a very touristy spot. I was pleasantly surprised. But have to admit a friend came the previous night and highly recommended the octopus. We went for a late lunch - service is slow-ish: because they are popular, the vibe is generally “we don’t need to try very hard,” but they’ll get there eventually (: even at 3pm on a Tuesday, we waited 10-15 minutes for a table, so just be prepared. The garlic prawns were amazing. The octopus rice was decent - ask for extra lemon wedges and squeeze some of that acid over the rice. It will give it the extra lift! Then they charged us for the croquettes, when asked they said that it was not complimentary, they bring and if you don't eat them and leave on the table they don't charge that. What?! Very cozy, hidden restaurant right off the river walkway. Decided to try sardines for the first time and they were nothing short of amazing! These also came with a side of kidney beans and rice. I would love to give them a zero star if it is an option. Waited for an hour to try it because of the good review here and my friend’s recommendation. But it is definitely a tourist trap. Fantastic meal, tiger prawns were the most delicious I’ve ever had, our waiter was charming and was an expert at shelling the prawns before serving them. The cod croquettes were perfect too. We were treated to several glasses of port wine without ordering them (and they were on the house!) Overall a wonderful evening, I’ll be coming back next time I’m in Porto! The view from the outside seating area is magical. The service was super funny because of our lovely waiter. The wide range of food was delicious and very reasonable too. Such a charismatic place! In spite of being in the middle of the tourist crowd it's worth trying. Really tasty food, nice presentation and great views.
