  The food was great but the service was seriously lacking. Staff pretty much ignored us throughout our meal. We topped up our own glasses! We were served our food an hour after our arrival, and as we hadn’t chosen to have starters we were required to wait for our main course until other diners had eaten theirs. Water was chargeable (unnecessary when tap water is drinkable all over Porto) as was some additional gravy/sauce for one dish! One dish was also cold but it wasn’t worth complaining as it was clear the staff followed a schedule and we were so hungry!   A friend and I had a super meal here in mid-January. It was recommended by staff at a nearby cocktail bar. We sat at the bar and had a great view of the kitchen in action. These people use all manner of fire to prepare the food. It's really cool to watch. I ordered the venison, which was outstanding.   The food was great. We were sitting right in front of the open kitchen and could see our food being prepared and plated. The kitchen is extremely clean, the personnel is well organised and kind.   Probably the best restaurant experience we’ve ever had!! The place is amaizing we were lucky and ate in front of the kitchen which is a show! The food tastes incredible. Everything has a very special taste. We love going to the restaurant and this one will stay in our memories. We spend 135€ for 2 people with a bottle of wine. We shared starter and dessert.   Directly after entering we a very friendly waitress took our jakets. After that they carried us to our places dircetly at the kitchen. All night we were able to watch the perfect cooking Show.   Everything was exceptional with my visit to elemento. My group was the last seated of the night and never rushed. The food and service were both fantastic. We tried a little of everything. The price was far beyond my budget and I'll likely not spend this much on a meal for a long time. I'm glad I tried it though. Very good.   I tried the tasting menu there a month ago and absolutely loved my experience. The food was amazing and the service was flawless. I loved that I was able to sit at the counter and watch the chefs prepare the food. I would definitely go there again and again.   First off, the staff here is A+. I walked in on a booked night, was told to come back the next evening (I booked on a Tuesday via Fork an hour before arriving so that was nice) and not only did she remember me from the night before by name but sat me at the Chefs table! I passed on the tasting menu because i wanted specific dishes. Like most Michelin places, the staff was attentive, personable & didn't miss any details regarding service BUT that's where it ends. This was NOT a Michelin-star meal, not even for the 1-star they "have". The app was a masterful plated eel dish with warm & cold ingredients to awaken your palate- very fresh. Unfortunately, my entree was tough, unevenly-cooked lamb chops with a DULL knife to boot, and it took FOREVER to be served to me from the time my app came out. My server, when I told her, said "I doubt it's overcooked, maybe the knife is dull, I'll bring a new one" - Huh???. The saving grace is that I only lost 70euro. Infelizmente, minha entrada eram costeletas de cordeiro duras e mal cozidas, com uma faca DULL para arrancar, e demorou uma eternidade para ser servida desde o momento em que meu aplicativo foi lançado. Minha garçonete, quando contei a ela, disse: "Duvido que esteja cozida demais, talvez a faca esteja cega, vou trazer uma nova" - hein? A graça salvadora é que perdi apenas 70 euros.   Quite an experience! We had the tasting menu. And asked for red wine recommendation. That was amazing! We love places down to earth with a good vibe. This is one of those. It was my husband’s bday, he definitely enjoyed it. Just one personal comment, in some places they take your wine bottle and water and put them in a side table a little far. We find it uncomfortable as you get interrupted all the time by waitresses or you have to wait until someone notices that you miss something. It just takes the coziness of the moment.   Among the worst, arrogant service I have ever encountered. Ordered the monk fish in grilled chicken broth as an appetizer. The fish was excessively salty and inedible. Dish was sent back after an initial argument with the maitre d' who insisted this is what the dish is supposed to be like. Rest of the meal was great - venison loin and the croaker fish, although the service deteriorated after the initial issue with the appetizer (we didn't see our server again until we asked for the bill. When the bill came, it still had the appetizer on it. Pointed this out and the maitre d' returned and refused to remove it. She insisted "it isn't the dish - it is your taste" and said they had served "several monkfish that evening. "Have you eaten monkfish before?" she challenged. I told her yes. She still refused. I asked to see the chef/owner and she said no, "he's busy." We paid rather than make a greater fuss and opted to leave this review instead.   Absolutely one of the best dining experiences to be had in Porto. Atmosphere is top notch. Wait staff is attendant without being invasive. Food is amazing. We ordered smoked kingfish as appetizer, beef and lamb for dinner. Wine recommendations were impeccable. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself here whether a local or on holiday.   The service staff were amazing and the wine was good but the food was not worthy of a Michelin star. I would recommend looking elsewhere for a memorable meal. Also, the smell in the restaurant is amazing but your clothes will smell like burning wood VERY strongly when you leave.   Utterly disappointing. This restaurant allows you to book a table, only to be told that they can’t offer the tasting menu because its too late (simple, don’t allow your customers to book a table at 9.30pm, which isn’t late by European standards) we then tried swapping to the A la carte but nothing was available because they “have been really busy.” However, upon departing they spun it to make it appear that there was nothing on the menu to our tasting - that’s because there was nothing left on the menu to choose. Probably explains why three other tables left after us as well. If you want your night ruined, book a table here. They clearly trade on the transient nature of tourists and the service not consistent with the Michelin recognition they have been given. The only disappointing experience in 6 weeks of holidaying.   To Chef Ricardo Dias Ferreira and Patricia Lourenço, We were denied a request for extra plates for our entrees in your restaurant tonight. We are a family of 4 who ordered a total of 8 food items: 2 entrees, 2 appetizers, 1 side, and the bread. The servers told us that "this is a no sharing restaurant" so they were not allowed to give us more plates. Perplexed, because we just shared 2 appetizers and we each had our own plates, we proceeded with sharing our 2 entrees and the side, passing around the plates. Your food was fine - you got 1 point for each dish we liked in the rating; the other dishes were underwhelming. In the end, though, the taste in our mouth was foul, as in the nonsensical policy you instituted for your "no sharing restaurant." If you require everyone to order an entree - say so. If you require your patrons to spend a minimum - say so. To deny a basic request for extra plates just to stand your ground of "no sharing" is just poor customer service.   Do not sleep on this place! The fire cooking concept at Elemento is on another level. The cooks, chef and wait staff are magical. Cool, calm and professional. Extremely knowledgeable about the food and wine. We did the chef’s tasting and wine paring and were blown away buy the flavors and pairings. We highly recommend making sure with the meats you do what the chef suggests. You will not be disappointed. Also, you will smell like a camp fire after you leave but we loved that! It’s part of the experience. Lastly, we sat in the open area near the fire and I appreciated the fan they placed near us. It get’s toasty and It was a nice touch. Can’t wait to come back again.   We had dinner here while visiting Porto. We were initially seated at the open kitchen but found it too smoky so we moved to a table. They were very accommodating to us. The wine list was great. The menu is small but should have enough for a variety of tastes. We found the food to be quite tasty. I recommend the grilled squid and ox beef and side of potatoes (my favourite thing we ate). Only reason this wasn’t a 5 star review for me was we left stinking of smoke and we didn’t have a cell signal while in the restaurant.   Had the tasting menu with the wine pairing. It is expensive but for an experience it was fantastic. The food is amazing, highly original and delicious. The service is faultless.   Unfortunately, this might be the worst Michelin restaurant, and also worst restaurant that my friend and I have visited in Portugal.   We sat up at the 'bar' table onlooking the chefs. First thing we noticed, as we were an early sitting at 7pm, all of the chefs were not doing anything (as no orders were placed) but it made for a bit of an awkward atmosphere. We got the tasting menu and the food was very nice albeit I would probably go for a la carte in hindsight. Although the portions were very good overall. The service was excellent. 10/10 there. Food was 8/10 (didn't have wow factor). Cocktails were 7/10. Looked nicer than they tasted. Atmosphere was 6/10 - not sure how you could improve it but i think it should be more lively.   A really amazing experience in general. Sitting in front of the open kitchen and watching the service being expedited is always a great experience. Fish and meat dishes of really high quality and conception, but a little less impressed by the desserts. The blueberries tart needed a bit more of flavor and the green peas flavor didn’t comme through. The chocolate dessert is good, just a bit too spicy by the end and needed another element to balance and refresh. The one thing I did not appreciate is the long wait for the dishes without any courtesy (amuse bouche or bread - bread is charged actually) if you don’t order the tasting menu. We were informed the beef will take some time, which is good to say, but you cannot just leave people waiting without the slightest taste of food for 45 minutes. The points that we believe should be improved are easily done, so would definitely go back as the general experience was really great.   The food in itself is good, woodfire grilled meat, fish and vegetables but way above average prices in Porto and you could get similar plates in other restaurants in the city so nothing very special. The location is nice but be ready to have a sticky woodfire smell on your clothes and hair afterwards (not a problem but fyi). Now, throughout the dinner we felt pushed to consume more. The waiters were constantly asking us if we wanted more wine, weirdly noting our choices to go directly with mains and not taking starters, and sharing a dessert - to the point that it was really annoying. Service was indeed not in line with other restaurants in Porto. Overall, good food but we felt like it is a restaurant which first goal is to make money and maximise revenue per table. We won't recommend nor come back to this place. I truly hope the restaurant team shifts its focus to the passion for cooking rather than money and maybe it will be able to achieve greater highs.   Food is awesome but the overall experience was not that great. Indeed, we were placed at the counter to enjoy the show but it was a bit disappointing as the atmosphere in the kitchen seems tense : the chef and employees don't look like getting along well and you can feel it. The waitress also rushed us out at the end of the dinner whereas we booked our table 2 months prior and accepted to come early after calling us on the afternoon... Too bad because food is really tasty and savoury even if some dishes are clearly overpriced (2 lagostim for 32€!). Our meal was fine it was presented very well and the employees were all really friendly and polite but we found the flavours and the wine pairing underwhelming and definitely not worth the €300 charged. Variety of menu is super limited and if you’re picky or heathy eater it’s gonna be hard for you to choose. The goat both carbonara sauce is very salty as mentioned here already and tastes nothing related to original carbonara.   I have to say, I read a lot of reviews and I really cannot believe this is about the same restaurant. I was a bit biased when I came in because of the mixed reviews. However, this restaurant completely surprised me in a good way. First: yes, you might smell a bit like fire when you’ve been near the kitchen but you’re going to a place where they only cook with open fire. Duh. I sat at a lower table and nothing is wrong with my clothes. Now the most important part: the food. I’ve chosen a la carte, and I was very glad because the dishes I had were SO tasteful, I could have eaten two of them. Same goes for the wine btw, the suggestions from the staff were very on point and lovely. First the red scarlet prawn tartare, which was extremely tasteful because of the broth. Very original taste of flavours. Second I had the venison loin which had a nice combination of mushrooms and macadamia nuts, and combining all the flavours in one bite was pure magic. It looked pretty good, but it tasted even better. Same goes for the modern version of the pastel de nata - surprising and very beautifully executed. Regarding the staff: looking at previous reviews, I can’t imagine we’ve been into the same restaurant. All the staff was very, very sweet, helpful and friendly - not only with the usual stuff, but also in making conversation and suggestions from the menu. So, I can only draw one conclusion: 10/10 would recommend. And I’d go back.   For a Michelin star rated restaurant the food was average, the presentation of the food is their greatest strength if I’m being perfectly honest. The seating area for single patrons is a bit cramped. The host was friendly and welcoming and great about getting me a reservation, but my waiter was not very attentive and had to ask senior staff several questions regarding my order. I had Muu Steakhouse down the street and I much preferred their quality of food, environment and the wait staff was a lot more sociable with guests. Wish I would’ve eaten at Muu again!! If you have limited time in Porto i would probably skip this place in lieu of other better dining options.   I was served by Carla and Pedro at Elemento, this was my first Michelin star experience and I was blown away by the service and food. I ordered the full tasting and the wine pairing and Carla took the time to show her knowledge of the pairing and significance of each drink and dish. Pedro was attentive and kind always making sure we were completely satisfied. I would highly recommend anyone even slightly interested to give it a try and be amazed.   Our server (should have got her name) was honestly the loveliest person ever ! Everyone there was so nice and attentive but chilled out as well. We sat by the kitchen and it was incredible to see. The whole atmosphere was great but that was insane to watch and they have fans so you don’t get too hot! The food was amazing. Had one starter between two, two mains and a side and a dessert, all of which were incredible. The pork belly in particular had such a great layer of fat and the textures melted, with the addition of squid ribbons it popped. And credit to the pastry chef as that dessert was out of this world. The wood-baked pastry case, smoked curd, cucumber ribbons, fresh raspberries and keffir Bechamel had me weak at the knees. So simple yet complex and fresh on the palate. Would highly recommend Elemento to anyone as it was an all round fantastic experience and would lik to thank the team.   One of the best experiences I've had in a restaurant in a long time. Even though it is pricey it is totally worth it. Service was amazing, food was just top notch and the ambiance was perfect with the robust looking kitchen. It was a little bit warm in the restaurant but they warn you before hand that that is some of the experience. I didn't mind, I think it added something to the whole experience. However, we were not impressed with most of the food. The fish dishes from the starters are very fresh and beautifully presented, but lacking some flavour punch. The duck was divine, but the goat was extremely salty, not edible at all. We let our host know about it and left the dish behind. To our surprise, it was still included in the bill.   Ah I had such high expectations! The pros are good food and reasonable price. That would normally be enough 5 stars for me, but the service was excruciatingly slow. A 9:30 seating held us until after 12:30. If it was a feast that might be worth it, but we were still hungry at the end! We would order a la carte but the place was getting shut down and we were still waiting on several courses. I've been to plenty of actual starred Michelin restaurants and here the quality simply did not match the prices (and rushed and sycophantic service, "didn't you love this plate?"). The most ridiculous part was there was ONLY small bottled water available for 3 euros each. We asked for a large bottle and they said only individuals. We asked for tap water. There is no tap water at this restaurant. I laughed out loud. I'm sorry, but the only explanation for this is to drive up profits on water when the food is already very expensive. Let the customers have their darn water!! Response: Portuguese tap water is fine to drink. It's not cultural.   Food was excellent and service spot on.. Highly recommend. The food was magical, very adventurous and I really enjoyed. We had the bar stool overlooking the kitchen and fires which was cool initially (we thought we had a table though..), and realised it is very hot there, every group has their own fan, and my expensive linen shirt reeked of smoke at the end of the dinner.   Worst dinning experience I ever had After booking weeks in advance and telling the restaurant the very same evening that we were celebrating an special night for us, we were given the worst table in the place just in front of a massive Air Conditioning machine near the entrance. We informed that we where cold, and were told they would do something about it. Nothing but more freezing temperatures happened around our table for the rest of the evening. When we received the main dishes, they got cold within minutes of arrival.   Dining at Elemento is a great experience if you are into open fire cooking. The smoky and rich wood flavour that enriches all their dishes, the cosy atmosphere that transports you all the way back to childhood and the friendly and very knowledgeable service made our evening one that we will not easily forget. And the food… oh, the food… is finger licking delicious. This is where I had the best beef tenderloin steak and braised cheeks I have ever tasted in my life. I highly recommend going for their tasting menu, which wasn’t cheap at 75 euros per person, but it was highly worth. You don’t have to go for the wine pairing too as the waiters will happily help you choose a glass of wine that can work with most of your dishes. The only downside to this experience is that, if you are sitting at the bar table (from where you can see everything that’s happening in their open kitchen which is a great experience on its own), you might get a bit too much smoke (even for an open fire fan like myself) and your clothes will definitely need a good wash to get rid of the smoky smell.   This was rather an ordinary experience compare to the high bar set by so many restaurants with tasting menus. But far most important is the whole experience. We had a tasting menu with wine pairing, the whole experience seemed rushed. Our staff was rather inconsistent, always changing missing proper food introductions or serving the wine, the whole fluidity and beauty of the tasting menu was lost compared to other places. So, this was a big loss. But coming to the most important part of the dinner, the food - i quite can't say it was not tasty, but it just didn't feel tasty enough for the standard they set themselves too. I felt at times the flavors were just not well combined and well balanced, the beef cheek with the aged beef combo, though both tasty, just didn't seem to work together, just as an example. I wouldn't recommend it if you're for a short time in Porto and looking for a tasting experience, as there are other place to try. We left quite unimpressed and a bit regretting our choice.   Due to only being Porto for a limited amount of time I really had to research interesting places to eat. As someone that doesn't eat meat but wanted to try the tasting menu (8 courses), I asked if a fish only one could be made they kindly accepted. I sat in front of the open wood fire grill to watch the chefs at work (be aware you'll stick of smoke for a while after if you sit here), and it was an absolute culinary pleasure and experience. The two starters of crab fish and caviar are some of the best cooking I've eaten in years. Everything else was equally as excellent but those two stood out. I opted out of the wine pairing and to stick to the drinking the malvasia solely as the wine is beautiful with fish. I'd also highly recommend this too! The desserts were nice but I wasn't blown away like the other courses - I would have hapily had a repeat order of the starters instead. Overall it was an expectional meal with very attentive staff who were just as brilliant. Glad I choose this over DOP and it was far better than Cantina. If you are in Porto and care about cooking, make sure to visit this hidden gem on a quiet backstreet.   We had an amazing dining experience at Elemento and it was certainly one of the highlights of our entire Portugal trip. We sat at the counter overlooking the kitchen. As others have noted you do feel the heat from the wood fire there, but it was not that bad, and we were there on a warm August day. It was cool to see all of the food prepared right in front of us, and the chefs were engaging but not intrusive. The food was very good. We ordered ala carte, but saw plenty of others order the tasting menu which looked awesome. (I would have if my wife ate fish!) This place is well on its way to receiving a Michelin star!   We had high expectations for this restaurant but it was a big disappointment. The 7-course menu is if one is honest a 4-course menu accompanied with bread (this is the first restaurant in the world that calls bread with butter a course) with 2 separate appetizers according to every definition in the restaurant world. The dishes are beautifully presented, not really tasteful and our steak was cold inside. The courses are served at a Formula 1 pace (1 of the tables in our neighborhood got 2 courses together) to ensure that each table can be booked twice a night. The portions are ultra small and we also went to eat a waffle after our visit to this restaurant. Our conclusion price-quality exaggerated and we ate better elsewhere in Porto of a higher quality for 50% of the price that we paid. Big plus is the interior but that did not satisfy our hunger. I am shocked because I write an honest, albeit negative, review and then the restaurant owner immediately marks me a fraud. I have therefore a photo on tripadvisor in which my bill is clearly visible and neatly refutes the accusation. I no longer wish to respond thereafter in the belief that the owner sees the mistake he has made. Walked by this place on the way to a well known restaurant recommended by some friends but decided to turn around and go back, and so glad that we did. Although some of the portions were too small, one meat course was not warm enough. The major criticism is that the cool idea of the wood fire is not transported from the open kitchen to the table.
