  Good old days ! We passed here by so many times but always thought it is a bit off, putting a big menu for tourists and through the big windows facing to Aliados square it looked dated. BUT, to our surprise it is such a cozy cafe! And its Rabanadas (French toast)! So delicious!   Warning: they charge 4€ on every bill pretexting bread and olives they bring at the beginning. I ordered octopus rice which was ok and tasty but was 1%octopus and then rice for 22€ and had the bad surprise of having+4€ for bread... Is a tourist trap!   We chose this place because we thought this historic eatery was a good alternative to the ridiculous 6€ coffee a the Majestic Café. What a disappointment. The historic appeal of the architecture was minimal, the art on the walls disappointing. The wait staff was pleasant, but service was painfully slow. We ordered poorly; the francesinha, a Porto specialty, is a goopey composition of cheap meats, low-end cheese, white bread toast with fried egg on top, all swimming in a some kind of sauce from a bottle. So that is our fault. The place has so much potential, and it was delightful to know that American jazz artists had played at the "Café dos músicos". I hope they get their act together in the future.   Was recommended by our hotel host, We were On our anniversary dinner and were told to wait outside, we waited 5 minutes for a host to approach us but as he passed by us he didn't even bother to make eye contact, we saw other people at the door leaving as well they were not approached.   Purposefully rating 1* as protest for several reasons: - the average evaluation is overrated, I've been able to find way better restaurants in town with lower review but better food and quality/cost ratio - asked for still water, they delivered sparkling and open before we could realise. Not a huge fan of wasting so in the end we kept it and had to order (and pay for) a still one - they haven't acknowledge their error - ordered one scoop of ice cream, they added a second one on top with a different flavor, that wasn't requested - we had also rejected the "couvert" but ofc the final bill included what we didn't ask for and the extra items delivered by mistake The staff was friendly and polite, but the poor experience makes me suspicious this behaviour is intentful so they can abuse distracted tourists.   Spent two whole mornings here in a row to rehydrate, relax, write and observe. Great service and attention, they were very welcoming and happy to make me feel at home. They even let me play a few songs on their grand piano! Such an elegant cafe that was a pioneer in design and ventilation to maintain indoor temperature even way back when.   Café Guarany is a nice, traditional, and old-fashioned Portuguese Café/Restaurant, founded in 1933 and located within the Hotel Aliados on one of Portos main Avenues, Ave. Dos Aliados. I went several times to Cafe Guarany, and every time, I did enjoy it. The staff was very friendly, approachable, and customer focused. The food was nice, and the prices were in the middle range. The interiors, which were in style obviously from the 30s and kept that way somehow until today, perfectly fit in with the appearance of that place. It looks nice, spacy, and clean. The service was prompt and flawless. The atmosphere was cool, calm, and relaxing. A nice break from the traffic noise, hassle, and bustle in the streets, and from the searing heat outside. There is an outside terrace that I enjoyed sitting on in the late afternoon relaxing with a beer as well as some nice olives and peanuts, despite the traffic noise. If I am in Porto again, I will take the time to visit this nice traditional/historical Portuguese place again.   I don't know why this restaurant isn't more famous. The food is great and the service is excellent. Like the hotel Aliados, nothing seems to have change for a long time. If you have seen a movie by Roy Anderson (winner of Festival de Cannes) , this establishment seems to like one of his scenes.   Try the Guarany breakfast! This is the sister restaurant of the iconic Cafe Majestic around the corner. They both seem to have similar menus but Guarany is cheaper and usually less busier so try here if Majestic is too busy. Lovely staff and huge breakfast for €20. Food was ok, sausage, bacon and eggs were fine, pancakes were kind of gritty but pastries were lovely and the wine was a nice start to the day however they don’t have non-dairy milk options for coffee. I can imagine this is a bit of a tourist trap and most visitors aren’t necessarily here for food but I would still recommend for the decor and lovely and welcoming staff alone.   I had a not so great experience during lunchtime here. I have been to this Café for a quick breakfast -coffee with pastel de nata- before and everything went smoothly. So I ordered the other day the kale soup and the steak with mushrooms. The soup was delicious, but what I got as a main dish, was a piece of meat which wasn't very tasty, accompanied by pre-fried potatoes and some sad vegetables, that didn't look very good, with maybe 2/3 very tiny pieces of mushrooms in between them. The dish wasn't very appealing and I couldn't finish it. Waiting times were also long, as I stayed for 1.5 hour because they delayed the main dish for over 45 minutes (and it's not that the place was full or anything). I have to say that I pointed out the fact about the dish to the waiter, and he was very kind and apologized. However, the fact that the food didn't meet my expectations this time remains.   I ordered a grilled octopus from the main menu and received a cold cooked one. The side dish was spinach with Parmesan cheese which was not highlighted on the menu either and it was also ice cold. When I pointed it out I was offered to order something else from the menu but it ruined our special honeymoon dinner as we eat separately and I eventually ate only a starter. We received a negative reaction from the waiter who was rolling his eyes in front of us. My husband ordered a sea bass and it was also cold but he was so hungry he ate it as it is we did not mention it. We would not recommend this place. They did not charge for the starter.   Cool place and excellent service. I had the Sunday special cod dish and wow it was probably the best cod dish I've ever had.   Service terrible, they never brought us our food, when they did it was hideous. My fish had not been filleted, my wife's Bolognese had no sauce was ground beef on top of some noodles.   Great and authentic bel époque style cafe. Sitting on the terrasse gives you a great views of the square. Rumour is the coffee is going to close as their rent is about to massively increase.   Restaurant with great atmosphere and live music while eating. I skipped the appetisers on our visit and went right for the entrees, but my company drank a soup that was so-so. The entree ordered were the recommended veal and it was nicely seasoned with garlic and herbs. I must say, although not over the top, it still was the best food on this trip. Portuguese good is blend and draws all its taste from the main ingredients. The best thing with the dinner was the desserts - I ate a sundae with good tasty ice cream and my company ate a dark dark chocolate cake and the coffee was nice. All in all a nice dinner.   Definitely recommend!!!!! The place to eat in Porto. High service standards, quick and very professional waiters. You will not be disappointed. Middle range prices for great food. Waiters are attentive and customer oriented. Restaurant is spacious, cosy and live piano music playing. Nothing to compare with other restaurants we went before.   I must say I was a little disappointed. I've paid over 15 EUR for one octopus (polvo in portuguese) tentacle and 3 EUR for a Portuguese beer that cost less than one thirth at the supermarket. Although the food was ok, I must say that in Lisbon places like "o gravatas" or "solar dos presuntos" that similar in category, serve much, much better. In my opinion this restaurant is too must expensive. Also the cor fish (bacalhau in portuguese) that costed over 15 EUR was half the normal amount, usually served. Clearly not a place to visit again. Paguei mais de 15 euros por um tentáculo de polvo e 3 euros por uma cerveja portuguesa que custa menos de um terço no supermercado. Embora a comida fosse boa, devo dizer que em Lisboa locais como "o gravatas" ou "solar dos presuntos" de categoria semelhante servem muito, muito melhor. Na minha opinião, este restaurante é muito caro. Também o peixe de cor (bacalhau em português) que custava mais de 15 euros era metade do valor normal, normalmente servido.   We were looking for a place to spend 1-2h since it was raining and stepped in this beautiful café restaurant. The service is excellent and all food and drinks we had were very very good. The "caldo verde" is definitely worth trying. Loved it!
