While intrigued by the concept of Porta 4, my visit left much to be desired. Despite the high price point, the octopus dish was disappointing due to sand residue, detracting from the overall enjoyment. The biggest letdown was the gnocchi, which, rather than being homemade as expected, was revealed to be store-bought and frozen in the open kitchen, undermining the freshness I had hoped for. Not only that, but the cold sauce on top of it was almost frozen when served. This made me question the quality of the ingredients used in other dishes. Unfortunately, I can't recommend Porta 4 as the experience did not justify the cost. The highlight of the dinner was the wine. We were lucky to just stop by and get a table for dinner. This was such an amazing and personal experience - like having a dinner at a good friend’s home who happens to be a great chef. The service was great and the food was delicious. We had the portobello with cheese, vegetable stew - which sounds like not the most exciting choice, but actually was the most surprising of all, because familiar ingredients tasted in a totally new way - and an octopus. It was so much fun to watch the chef cook just in front of you. We cannot recommend this place enough and will definitely come back when visiting Porto again. Can't recommend this place more!!! The food was incredible, and the service was extremely personalised. I had the gnocchis, fish soup, and crème brûlée, and all were fantastic together with the wine. The chef cooking next to you and talking to you was great. The place has only a few tables so would suggest to book in advance!! They change the menu every 3-4 months, so they always have seasonal dishes. And last but not least, special mention to the wine. Excellent dining experience offered out of a surprisingly tiny space, tucked around the corner from one of the best sunset viewing spots in the old town part of Porto. The rotating selections of local wines was easily the best part of menu. I got to experience the best and most unique tasting vinho verde (it was even orange in colour) I had during my entire multi-week trip across Portugal. The food was also good but slightly hit or miss. For example, the salt added to the Iberian salad likely wasn't mixed properly during the prep because there were only a few bites where I suddenly tasted very intense salt clumps, but the rest of the salad lacked any real salinity. Ironically, the polvo da nossa costa needed a bit of salt to bring the flavours more forward. But the mango pudding dessert was just perfect and had just the right amount of sweetness. Definitely would eat here again! This place was definitely 5 stars. The food was really well prepared, everything from the appetizers, through main dishes to desserts was very flavorful. An excellent experience. My partner and I came here a couple of weeks ago and were really impressed by the food and the wine. We shared everything, and ordered the mussels in tomato sauce and the goats' cheese portobello to start. We absolutely loved it. The waiter/sommelier gave us a choice of white wines to be paired with the first two dishes, both of which we tried. After that, we had the confit duck and the pork cheek which were paired with a red wine, which again we could try first. The wines were paired perfectly. This place was fine. The service was acceptable but not great. We got a table for the 7:30 sitting and watched the waiter turn away walk-ins despite empty tables (a few people seemed pretty perturbed by this). The waiter noted the items were to share but gave no other information about the food even where it would’ve made sense to do so (eg the mussel entree is served cold, the pork is paired with a sweet fruit, etc) so overall the service was bland. There’s only a few tables here which makes for a great experience. The two guys there are super friendly. The food was cooked very well. The beef cheeks were the standout dish for us for the evening. Don’t be put off- we had expert wine advice, three courses and relaxed, friendly service plus excellent jazz in an authentic setting. Stopped in on Saturday late when the restaurant was mostly empty after the dinner rush but they wouldn't serve us dessert even though it was hours before close. The manager said come back Tuesday at 7:30. We extend our trip in Porto an entire day to try this place and get there as instructed, even 5 minutes early. All of the tables are empty. And we are turned away again despite following exact instructions. No one said we needed a reservation. We didn't eat all day in anticipation of coming here. Ultimately these stupid little restaurants are over rated. We ate at all the "best" rated spots from Voltaria to Tapabento and I am sure the Google / Yelp algorithms are broken or paid to show these as top results. The highly rated restaurants were obnoxiously exclusive but also had the most mediocre food. None were nearly as good as Alibi, Puro, or Concept 31. Food in Portugal is amazing everywhere so you might as well dine at a restaurant that greets you with a welcome smile and table when you are hungry instead of turning its nose up at you. If you are looking for fast food/formal dining, this is not for you. However if you are looking for amazing food and a cozy dining experience, this place definitely is it! There are two guys doing this restaurant (one cooks and the other attends the tables). They are friendly and easy to talk to. You can see the chef cook the food and talk to him while he is doing so. We thought the food was great and the portions were perfect. We had the tasting menu with cod and pork belly, and it was absolutely delicious! It is worth knowing that there are only four tables inside and three tables outside. So a reservation is definitely required, and it is best to arrive a little early so that you can choose where to sit. Also do not come in expecting a quick bite. This tiny little gem of a place is my absolute top pick of places to eat in Porto. When I say tiny, I mean it has 3 tables inside and a further 3 outside so booking is essential and the sittings are either 7:30pm or 21:30pm. It is run by 2 guys.. a Chef and Somelier.. we were lucky enough to have the 'Chefs Table' right in front of the open plan kitchen. We went for the tasting menu that comprised of a Cheese and Meat board, bread, olives and the most delicious olive oil! This was more than just a dinner: it was super delicious, a show, a great, personal atmosphere, and so on! We had three courses for for ~30€ each (incl. a bottle of really good wine). The concept is: one cook in a tiny kitchen plus one waiter for the tiny restaurant (fits around 10-12 people at a time). We really had a great time in combination with a delicious dinner. I really like this place. And besides the waiter didn’t want to give us wine “as cheap as out friend”, it was the best spent money in Porto for food. Second of all the personale is very prepared on the food, also in English. Third the food. Not many choices but there is a reason why. Highly recommend Porta 4. It is quite a small restaurant with limited seating so I would definitely recommend making a reservation. We had the steak and the gnocchi which were both delicious. Honestly, we were deeply disappointed. After all the great reviews we were looking forward to this gem of Porto. However, something must have changed here. It's confusing. The two guys are really nice, but have absolutely nothing to do with the description of the past reviews. The starter and dessert were good. The wine was worth it as well. The two mains on the other hand (both fish) were horrible. One we even had to give back because of the taste and smell. Two stars only because the waiter actually was quite nice and fair, since he reduced the check. Overall unfortunately I definitely wouldn't go again.. Such a shame. The reviews we read about this restaurant made us very excited, but the food left us very disappointed! We chose the tasting menu, which included some bread, olive oil and olives, a tiny plate with some cheese and charcuterie (which you would normally pay €15 for according to their menu, which is ridiculous for the teensy tiny amount you get). For mains we had the vegetarian gnocchi with artichoke, which was really not good. The gnocchi had a very strong soda bicarbonate taste (which you get with cheap gnocchi), and only a few small pieces of artichoke that clearly came from a can because they were very sour. The mozzarella that was also put in this dish was not tasty as well. My partner had a steak which was very tough/chewy in a bad way. For the price you pay (~€20 pp) you can do MUCH better in Porto. Very cute, little restaurant. The meals tasted good and the prices were affordable. But thats about it... I went there because of all the good rewiews, but got disappointed actually. The two guys were nice, but not the way they get described... The ingredients of the meals were not fresh / selfmade or high in quality. .. I saw everything the cook did: Mozarella from the Aldi (!!!) brand, gnocchi out of a plastic package, prepared cheese / meat plates, which got dry by the time we got it. And I hate when servers touch the food with bare hands (here bread for the cheese plate), while touching everything else without cleaning his hands. Thats not yummy. Probably the best dining experience I had in Porto. This place is tiny, as in 6 tables for 2, and you'll definitely need to reserve ahead of time(trying stopping by the night before or earlier, as it fills up). Once you're in though, it a really great...we ordered the tasting menu, and we're not disappointed. The cheese plate was amazing, the cod and humus and ricotta and strawberry salad delectable, and the deserts sublime(especially the mango lime concoction!) WHAT A TREAT! Ive been to Michelin Star restaurants around the world, and sometimes the experience is more about the connection and interest the chef has with his customers as well as the food.. This was one of those cases where we had such a magnificent experience that it just made it so special. The restaurant is a small intimate place where there is no more than 4 or 5 tables . The food is so fresh you can taste it in every dish. The carisma of Ricardo the owner and chef is exceptional and takes you through a culinary journey of Portuguese flavors. The Tuna was incredible, the Cod was so fresh, the wine paring was perfect, but we enjoyed more than anything having a conversation w the chef through out our meal. I dont tend to leave comments , but just felt tonight was a special night. We are very grateful for the experience, and can tell anyone reading this to go, enjoy a delicious meal, in this cozy, non pretentious setting w a chef that loves what he does and you see it when you taste his food. You need to wait or reserve! First of all we had a realy nice evening, we reserved a table for two at 7:30 pm. And we had the menu for 2 (which was realy good). The wine prices are a bit too high in my opinion, we had a bottle of nice whitewine from porto, in the shop it costs like 6 euro and we paid 20 at the restaurant, in my opinion 12-15 would be fair. The main dishes are realy tasty but not realy big, you need the menu to still your hunger. And at 9:30 pm other guests were waiting to get a seat and we had some wine left and had to stand up to free the place, normally no problem for me but with this high prices I want service and comfort and not to stand up for other guests if we reserved a table. And a candle or some flowers on the table wouldn't be much work to do. The food, atmosphere and people at this restaurant are amazing and show you everything that’s great about Portugal. Amazing wines, high quality food (the tuna is going to blow your mind - before I went there, I was convinced that I don’t like tuna and their dish changed my mind), lovely, passionate open-minded people working there and a cozy atmosphere are what make this place so great. I can’t imagine Porto without Porta 4. During my internship in this city, I went there at least 10 times. Every time someone visited me I made sure to show them this gem. I am actually surprised that I never wrote a review... Since I visited one year ago, they made some changes to their menu... but it’s still really amazing! They added an amazing dessert - „drunk“ pear with quejo fresco (a special portuguese cream cheese). Absolutely recommendable!!! It’s a MUST go if you visit Porto! They have a Tasting Menu for 2 people and it’s 40€, it doesn’t include drinks, but the food it’s delicious. Also, the experience is great. It’s a cozy restaurant, only fits 4 tables (12 people in total), so if you want to go, you should book a table in advance. The place is very small and cosy, it is perfect for a lovely dinner with someone special. The waitress and the chef are very nice people, they make you feel like home. We took the menu for two people. It was composed by 1 plate with salami and cheese, 1 appetiser, 2 main courses and 2 desserts. Wouldn‘t have posted this but felt really embarrassed after all. Went in to get a dessert to go because I did really enjoy it a couple days before when I had the chef‘s menu. The couple serving us was really kind but this time the younger waiter was being rude telling me that dessert is for “customers only”. Like being home. This place is really a pearl in Porto. The restaurant is cozy, small and you'll get the impression you are entering the owners's kitchen. We managed to find a place in one of the four tables available (reserving just 10 minutes before) and we felt like we were home. It is rather cozy - reserving beforehand is advised. Porta 4 consists of a single room for a maximum of 14 guests and also includes the kitchen, which let's you wonder how they are able to create dishes that are on point in timing. And on point they are - delicious and interesting combinations of small plates (which are more akin to small main courses rather than tapas). We where particularly impressed with the codfish on hummus served with mini asparagus. The service is excellent, welcoming and the wine recommendations went very well with the food we ordered. Love it, just love it. Microscopic in size and usually a line. Lots of other places to eat in Porto if there's too much of a eait but if you can get in or get there early, the small dishes are quite tasty and the wine "list" is basically whatever they have in stock on a shelf that they pour off through the evening. This restaurant suprised us a lot! The vibe in this tiny restaurant is amazing due to the very friendly host and the open kitchen. We took the chef'smenu with a matching bottle of wine and the food was definitely outstanding and creative. I would certainly recommend this place to everyone! Very small (but perfectly formed) restaurant with excellent food. It sits about 14 total, so well worth booking in advance. The pork belly was excellent and the desserts are out of this world! We turned up a little early for the first evening sitting, without a reservation. Luckily there was space for two, and we enjoyed our evening a great deal; memorable setting, intimate, friendly. We really loved our meal here last night. Full of character, warmth and good food & wine. Luckily we got a last minute booking for their first sitting as they had to turn away several walkups. This is a pocket handkerchief restaurant, maybe 16 guests tops. But I felt I had more personal space here than I did at Cantinha Avillez the previous night. The menu, like the room, is concise but with plenty enough variety to keep everyone happy. We chose the chef’s menu which was a great way to try a few different dishes and excellent value at €30 for 2 people. Not including wine but that was very reasonable. Apart from some appetisers we chose the octopus with parsnip puree - my favourite, gnocchi with mozzarella, and slow roasted black pig cheek. All delicious. The owners split roles - she is the chef and very good at it, and he does front of house and very good at that. We particularly liked the wine recommendations. During our culinary food tour 'Taste Porto vintage..' the Restaurant Porta 4 was recommended and it definitely was well worth the walk from our hotel. We made reservations for the 7:30 seating. The restaurant space is tiny and the chef cooks in this amazingly small kitchen that faces the 4 tables (10 person capacity). The organization, speed and manner in which the chef prepares each plate is impressive. It's a Tapas style menu. We were two couples and we each ordered a tapas and shared. A total of 9 tapas were ordered. The tapas were amazing. The presentation and complex flavors of each plate was incredible. The bill was very reasonable and the chef was very friendly. Hands down the best and most authentic dining experience in Porto. My husband and I happened upon this restaurant and were lucky to get a table without a reservation at 11pm on a Saturday evening.
