  Such a great place. Just up the road from our hotel “Hotel Sintra Jardim”. The owner is very passionate about his food - we were very impressed he can speak English, Portuguese, French and Italian! And has memorised his menu in all these languages for his guests. He takes very good care of you.   Jose is one in a million. We were only in Sintra for a night and were lucky enough to get into his family’s restaurant. I left my 15+ year old treasured, perfectly worn in, irreplaceable jean jacket there. I didn’t realize until we’d already left Sintra the next morning. Jose and his wife met me IN LISBON a week later when we were there and gave it back to me!! Who does that?!? Jose does and did. Go to this man’s restaurant. He truly treats you like family.   It's a bit out of the way but absolutely worth it. The owner patiently explained the dishes to us and answered any questions we had, with no language barrier (he seemed to speak at least 3-4 languages from what we heard). Every dish was unique and tasted great, with the pork neck and butter hummus being standouts. Price was very reasonable for the quality of food.   I would return to Portugal just to visit this place again! The harmony of taste, wonderful service, seafood cooking skills (which is rare), big range of vegetarian meals, perfect deserts. I loved especially about this restaurant that they know the perfect way to deal with amount of fat and sugar in food, so it remains healthy and delicious.   I almost never write reviews but for Nau Palatina I had to. I took my mother here on a sleepy Saturday night during our only evening in Sintra. It's a 20 or so seater restaurant a little off the beaten path from the town's centre - about a 10 minute walk up the hill. The food, atmosphere and the attention of the owner was worth every step. He took his time explaining each dish, made by his wife, in detail and provided some excellent recommendations. We went with the melted goat cheese and bread, beet root salad, octopus a lagareiro and the cod bladder and chorizo stew. The stew was something I never thought I'd try but ended up being, thus far, my favourite dish during our entire stay in Portugal. We had some lovely wine by the glass and we were even served complementary ginjinha liqueur to finish the evening. Went for a drink afterwards next door (down the alley) to a friendly, casual spot called Tasco do Strauss which made the night even sweeter. I will say that if you are in a rush or expecting to be finished your meal within one hour this may not be the place for you. But if you are looking for a restaurant with an incredible and casual atmosphere, local cuisine that is both exquisite yet unpretentious, and to be treated like family by caring and engaging staff - please do yourself a favour and make the trip to Nau Palatina if you are staying in Sintra.   We went here for dinner and had the most magical time! The food was absolutely delicious and the staff and other guests made our whole experience! Amazing Portuguese tapas- the octopus and shrimp are a must and the local meats and cheeses are out of this world! The restaurant is not very big and within about 40 minutes of us arriving (shortly after it opened at 7pm) they had to put a sign out saying they were full so if you can make a reservation online ahead of time or go early!   We thoroughly enjoyed an evening spent here. All the food was top class and paired with a regional wine suggested by the owner. We had a couple of tapas plates to start, a wonderful creamy lentil soup followed by grilled prawns and pork casserole. We had three deserts, the chocolate truffle was fabulous. I can whole heartedly recommend if you are in Sintra, booking is advisable as the seating capacity is limited. Service was excellent, the owner took time to explain the menu options.   Amazing food and great service at this local family-owned cosy restaurant. The waiter and the cook own the restaurant and explain every dish on the menu when time allows for it. Everyone had masks on and the seating is well dispersed. We were able to sit outside and we were very comfortable. This is a cosy Portuguese tapas restaurant that has a limited menu of simple, yet absolutely delicious, dishes. We were just two and we had all of the Setubal wine (smooth and light red, white and moscatel), then we had 5 starters, 1 main, and two desserts. The portions are small and perfect for sharing, so we were able to sample many dishes without filling ourselves up too much and without breaking our bank. It’s a small village so make reservations and make time to look for parking, but it’s really worth leaving the Sintra Center and eating here! We walked over from the hotel and it was well worth it!   Really, really delicious food at a very reasonable price . Staff were extremely attentive, carefully explaining the menu and helping to advise on what to order. A really wonderful experience and a highlight of our trip. Loved the red wine with peach from the owner's father's recipe, what a lovely personalised touch. A superb selection of teas too. Great ambience as well. Our favourite place in Sintra by far. A bit of a walk from the centre but definitely worth it. Highly recommend if you're in the area!   My wife is a well-traveled person who has visited many different countries, and have been to many interesting and various restaurants/cafe. But she was truly impressed by this restaurant. It is very cozy, beautiful, and has a home-like atmosphere. the hosts were very kind, open-minded, and very welcoming. They all spoke English very well. And most importantly, the food – it was totally delicious! Fresh, tasty, with a lot of choices on the menu, including fish, meat, soups, and seafood, their specialty. They also have amazing olive oil, octopi, mashed soup, and dry tuna. Desserts, and in particular, chocolate truffles were just beyond any expectations. On top of that they had a huge selection of delicious teas and wines. Plus, we got a shot of liquor and a glass of muscato wine as a compliment from the restaurant.   Having hoiked up the hill from the old town to this restaurant with a slightly cranky & beach tired other half, I was hoping for a decent meal to justify my insistence on a visit... 3 hours later, we bounced down the same hill, groaning and full, but very, very, happy... The passion that the team have for the local food they source, cook and serve is matched with a complete lack of pretension about what they achieve with the best local ingredients they insist on. And what they do is glorious... while everything we were served was excellent, there were touches of brilliance in some dishes, mussels, chickpea fritters and the airy ricotta and marmalade dessert spring to mind... The bill for 5 individual and wonderful tapas dishes, with a fantastic local wine was €53.. go now, immediately - only stopping to put your boots on first!
